The guys mentioned Neil's "trip" when they were discussing the lyrics to this song. Sadly, it wasn't just a trip. Neil Peart's daughter died in a car crash when she was just 19 years old. Less than a year later his wife was diagnosed with cancer and she died shortly thereafter. Suffering two major losses like this devastated Neil. He got on his motorcycle and drove 55,000 miles all through Canada, up to the Arctic circle down the coast and through America all the way down to Belise and back. He wrote a song and a book about it called "Ghost Rider". If you get a chance, the book is a good, inspiring read.
This is one of those songs I never want to end. Peart was a master of alliterations. Phrases such as Green and Grey wishes, Wispy White veil, Wistful and Weathered. Genius!!
20 down 147 to go. LOL You guys are the best father and son reaction team I've seen. It's a shame you never got to see them live, because that is how they became successful enough to continue doing what they want on their own terms for so long. One of their most defining and universally respected traits was their ability to reproduce live the amazing and complex sounds and arrangements of the recorded versions of their songs. No other band before, during or after has matched the excellence of Rush. Many have come close, and that's a pretty admirable feat.
Not sure when the NYC experience happened maybe at the start of the Rush journey for Neil when they were gigging all over North America but the London experience was pre Rush when Neil spent a year or so living and working in London in late 60's maybe 1969/1970 as I recall reading that he auditioned to play in Emerson Lake & Palmer, history may have changed if he was successful: Emerson Lake & Peart! He worked in a souvenir shop in Carnaby Street and tried to get drumming work but did not make it so went home to work in his father's agri tool store in Canada before Rush (Alex and Geddy) discovered him a month before they started on their first tour since recording the debut album!
Congrats on 20 Rush reactions!!! Happy to say I’ve been there from near the beginning. Being on Moving Pictures, this was company with Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Red Barchetta, AND YYZ. Man! Stiff competition, but you ask any Rush fan, and they know Vital Signs, and they know Witch Hunt, and they definitely know The Camera Eye. Congrats on getting the guitars too. I play, and I picked up a bass many years ago just to learn the awesome basslines of Geddy Lee. Don’t tell Alex, but I actually know more Rush songs on bass than on guitar. Keep at it. It takes patience and practice, but there’s so many good learning resources on the web nowadays. Cheers! And here’s one for the hat: Driven from Test for Echo (1996) - When this album came out, it marked a shift in style for Rush. The synths took a back seat, the guitar parts were heavy, and the basslines were driving. On this album they pulled together 30 years of experience and experimentation to set the tone for their last four albums. This is a preview of how they will sound towards the end.
There are no bad Rush songs, Only bad Rush fans...😏 Great review of a great song guys. Alex's guitar tone in the first half of the solo reminds me of a Saxophone 🎷 And Geddy's Bass tone on the whole song is pure 🔥 👌
Also.... if you want a great deep track with awesome synths, awesome drums... and a showcase of Alex's crazy genius, his work on this being chaotic and downright dirty, check out "Between the Wheels" from the Grace Under Pressure album.
Oh boy. Have the hat and the glasses ready for Natural Science. Can't wait, one of my faves. You can listen to it 10 times and hear something new in every part, drums, guitar, bass... classic.
Great Reaction y’all! One of RUSH’s last “long songs”!! Just excellent... A lot of the time you hear those “keyboards in the background”, that’s them playing the Taurus with their feet!! As far as 8:56... I can’t say I know for sure, but I got this off a RUSH forum page, they said this when someone wanted to know what that sound was...”Exactly what you said it sounds like! Geddy talking! He's putting on the London accent. First someone (Maybe Neil?) says "Hallo" and then Geddy responds with "Mornin' Guv"”... sounds like it could be Legit.. but I’ve never heard the band comment! Y’all have a good one! Your sounding and doing great!! Be well and God Bless... from Texas!
Another great reaction to my favorite band. Love Alex's solo while Geddy goes off on the bass, pure ear candy. I used to play this song over and over just because of the sweetness of the melody. You boys have to do "Witch Hunt" of this album. The lyrics are killer.
Alex burps and says Morning Gov. Rush are good at leaving Easter eggs. They mentioned camera eye and yes I do believe it was Limelight. In A farewell to Kings they have the line closer to the heart and then later they have a song called Closer to the Heart. I suggest A Farewell to Kings to put in your hat. It is off an earlier album and there is a music video for it. I did like London when I was there many years ago. Unfortunately all I have seen of New York is their airports on my way to Europe and the UK. Cheers 🇨🇦✌
Doubt Neil would have been caught inside an IHOP, unless that was the only diner in town (not very likely...). He wrote a number of books on his motorcycle travels and gave insight into songs he wrote lyrics to. He favored locally owned establishments for lodging and eats. He'd often take the back roads where ever he went, even on tour. He preferred to ride between gigs instead of fly or take a tour bus. Since he stuck to rural areas, he avoided the publicity he sought to elude. Apparently, he was very introverted and didn't feel comfortable at all with the meet and greets Alex and Geddy frequented.
Great reaction as usual guys! This song is definitely one that gets better each time you listen to it as you pick out bits and pieces that you swear you didn't hear before. It's a great example of how RUSH is never in a hurry to give you that "big punch", but are content to build slowly and take you along for the ride!☮☮☮
The “Moving Pictures" album was the first time I heard Rush. I was blown away. This album is my #1 by them. Please react next to Entre Nous and Different Strings from the Permanent Waves album. Keep the glasses on lol. Don’t ever doubt Rush🤘
Dad. You’ve tapped into the theme of Moving Pictures with your reference to visual imagery. The album was written to feel very cinematic, hence the title, not to mention the multiple puns of the album cover design.
You guys need to do the live triple threat from the live album exit stage left even if you’ve heard the studio versions of the tracks. Broons Bane, The Trees, into Xanadu. There may not be a better live three fer’ by any band on any album. Check it out.
Yes, Limelight. "Living in a fish eye lense, caught in the camera eye, I have no heart to lie, I can't pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend...."

When they played this live on their most recent tours at the end of the London part, in addition to the bells of Big Ben you also heard parts of Austin Myers "Yeah-ah Baby" and Monty Python "Bring out yer dead". Nice reaction, I knew the jam at the end would blow your minds. Camera Eye is easily in my top 10 Rush songs of all time. Another one you should consider is "Jacob's Ladder"! And on a different note, when are you guys going to react to something from The Who? That will probably be a whole new rabbit hole for you. I highly recommend you start with a song from The Who called "Bargain".
Forgot to mention, Rush actually covered a song by The Who called "The Seeker". There are videos on youtube of them performing it live. And speaking of live, you really NEED to react to Rush performing "Spirit of Radio" live in Toronto in the summer of 2003 when they performed in front of 500,000 fans on a sunny August afternoon! Neil Peart Perfectly combined lyrics that paint a picture and intelligent, thought provoking lyrics. Forever a legend.
Not only was he the greatest drummer of all time but also a brilliant lyricist, a true poetic visionary mind.. Neil Peart (RIP).. RUSH forever..
The guys mentioned Neil's "trip" when they were discussing the lyrics to this song. Sadly, it wasn't just a trip. Neil Peart's daughter died in a car crash when she was just 19 years old. Geddy and the Producer, Terry Brown
This is one of those songs I never want to end. Peart was a master of alliterations. Phrases such as Green and Grey wishes, Wispy White veil, Wistful and Weathered. Genius!!
In that part of the song they say "Hello!" "Good morning Gov" with a British accent
Great song and the lyrics are like poetry
Thank you. All these years I heard something and never knew what it was.
I finally know what was said in that part. .. took about 40 years lol.
I’ve always wondered what was said in the background. Thank you!
Thanks bloke!!!
Righto.....they're in London after all.
My favorite album by Rush!
This was my first concert back in 1981, Moving Pictures Tour. They kick ass!!
The talking in the background in II. London is "Hello . . . 'morn, Gov..." - two Brits exchange greetings.
The song comes from a study by early 20th century American novelist John Dos Passos into 2 different cities - New York & London which Neil had read.
Camera Eye one of my favorites!
The Garden live - I think you guys are ready
Last song on their last album.
I always think people should hear Time Stand Still before The Garden.

Neil Lived in London for a while, so he wrote it from real life.
"Hello", "Morning Guv" London accent, people greeting each other on the streets of London
Their producer was British and says hello and Geddy responds back “mornin gov”
