many years ago, when I was in Europe, I was waiting for a connecting flight and wandered about to find someplace to get some overpriced food. I found a little cafe with booths, and upon entering, I saw Neil Peart in one of the booths on the wall. as I walked up, I slowed and said " I love your work ", he looked up and I said " thank you for what you do " and continued down a few more booths before sitting down. when the waitress came, I placed my order and went to my pocket for cash to pay, and she says the gentleman who just left paid for it already. I had looked at the menu for maybe 2 minutes, and he'd left, but not before buying my lunch.

"R30 Overture" from their R30 tour in 2004. A medley composed of one song taken from each of their first 6 albums: Finding My Way (Rush); Anthem (Fly by Night); Bastille Day (Caress of Steel); A Passage to Bangkok (2112); Cygnus X-1 (A Farewell to Kings); Hemispheres (Hemispheres). The show opened with a video of Jerry Stiller waking from a dream. That's who you hear yelling "YEAH" in the background at the beginning.

Here's the MAJOR difference between RUSH and other bands in the music industry... While some like the Eagles, Bob Dylan and Zeppelin block reactor vids, RUSH has actually sent box sets, drum heads, sticks and other things to reactors because the industry never wanted them to succeed. No label would sign them. They built their fame by building an undeniable fanbase, and until the day Neil passed away and the band permanently ended, they stayed true to those fans. It was the single most real relationship between a band and their fans ever and it worked.

I saw them on their Snakes and Arrows tour. No opener. They came out and played almost 4 hours straight. It was incredible. Jamal, I'm guessing by now some life long Rush fan has explained the washing machines. If not, I'll tell you that Alex always insisted on having his tower of amps behind him. Geddy, making fun of Alex, came up with the washing machines but in different tours they put popcorn makers, rotisserie chicken ovens etc always opposite Alex's amps behind Ged. Btw, as a life long fan since the early 70s, 24 concerts attended, it always amazed me that those 3 guys could make such incredible music on stage not just in the studio. My first Rush experience was a little 2,500 seat arena call Park Center in Charlotte NC. Needless to say, I was SOOOO hooked, but the BEST PART is that my "Rush journey" will only end... when I do. I am not even a little embarrassed to say that I still weep about the passing of Neil. Although he was a "quirky" individual and was a very private person, I still feel as though I sort of"knew" him...as I feel the same way about Geddy(Dirk) and Alex(Lerxst). I started in '90 with Chronicles CD set, and that was it...I was hooked. Seen them 9 times, in their hometown of Toronto (living about an hour outside of).
Being a geeky, nerdy kid, Neil's lyrics spoke to me, their music became me.
When Neil passed, I cried. I had never felt this way for a 'celebrity' before. I asked my wife (who was with me for 7 of those concerts) "is this normal that I should feel this way for a man I didn't really know?" She said "sure, you knew him through his music/words, and music affects you on a very emotional, soulful level, just like me".

So much to be said about them, the larger picture for me is they were unique, an anomaly in the rock world. So appreciative to have been around to experience their presentation of rock, the chemistry between these three bros in such an expanse of albums is a bit special. :)

I don’t think either Neil, or Geddy would ever have accepted that characterisation of Alex and I’m not sure I do either. Alex is a phenomenal guitarist and a man without ego. He was every bit as key to the band as the other two and I think he musicality was right up there with them. Rush was, above all else, a band of equals. That was how they stuck together for as long as they did.
