I taught myself to scream like Corey Taylor on the first few slipknot albums and it took me forever to realize that it actually is me doing what you're saying it just happens to sound amazing and now I have to learn to stop doing it that way because it does hurt

Sometimes turning down the volume or lowering the air pressure just a bit, helps to increase the comfort and sustainability of vocals without lowering their quality and power. It's worth experimenting if it's possible in your case to achieve it.

Great video. I've gotten so much better at my false cord growl. The way that did it for me was nailing the Kargyraa and then removing some voice by like you are whispering, then its almost all false cord with no voice and quiet, the trick is to maintain that coordination of mostly false cord with open folds / less voice, but then add back in your voice as much as possible while maintaining that coordination. While you don't want to whisper, I found that was what I needed to do to shift from Kargyraa to a "growl" sound while keeping the false cords engaged. Once you nail that, you can maintain it and lean into your voice as much as possible to get the volume back in full force.
What I used to do is close my throat and go into a fry/false cord combo distortion from Karygraa, and it felt like my distortion shifted from my false cords to a restricted/voice fold/fry distortion, but learning to open the vocal folds by removing your voice from karygraa and focusing the distortion on the false cords, then maintain that focus on false cords while adding voice back, really helped me get a better coordination that feels and sounds like a false cord growl and doesn't have the same restriction.
    Hope that makes sense.

It sounds a bit complex but I think I understand it. It's a bit like a callibration of proportions between the compression, false vocal folds activity and connection of the true vocal folds. The resonance is also important. Finding the right proportions might be tricky and take some time and experimenting. I am happy that you found a method that works for you best!

I want to talk a little about 'breath distortion'. So, yours actually sounds more like relaxed vestibular folds, while mine gets completely different tissues engagement (which I believe is vocal folds) to make distorion. And I also believe sometimes I'm engaging them both and even can keep 'clean note' (more or less). It's kinda looks like you doing karguraa and then you need to start pushing a lot by basically yelling. But it's really taxing to keep that force, and as you said, really hard to add compression.
Compression is also different topic for me, which is my top priority, basically finding out how to do hypercompression with vestibular folds and just compression to make good fry. And since you probably planing to do next video with fry, I want to suggest one of the thing that almost no one talks about is that you can do fry noise using compression on your arytenoids, which I mostly did.

Breath distortion is one of traps while practicing growl or false chord, just like whispering in case of fry scream. The sound isn't properly articulated and the mechanics is totally different than in case when sound is properly created.
When I do the breath distortion I feel an intense wave of air that is flowing through my larynx - it has no shape, I don't feel any control over it and it irritates my throat. There's definitely false vocal folds activity but beside them true vocal folds are active as well. It's uncomfortable especially for them because they are not created for making such sounds (they should be connected while phonation).
About this: "It's kinda looks like you doing karguraa and then you need to start pushing a lot by basically yelling." There's one good point made by the guy from the tutorial below. He tells that the sound is moving to another place in the larynx but he is not aiming for a higher volume. Then he shows some examples. Here's the link:
      ua-cam.com/video/rPNMZpiU26M/v-deo.html
For me it started to get useful from about 3:40 because previous part was very general and kind of typical tutorial bs with stuff about the diaphragm etc. But from about 3:40 he has a few good thoughts.
About this "(...) you can do fry noise using compression on your arytenoids, which I mostly did." - I've done a couple of tutorials covering that topic. For example those:
      ua-cam.com/video/ALhYjTAsFuo/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/u0CCwBMwtoE/v-deo.html
      ua-cam.com/video/w-Z1bWXEe0s/v-deo.html
Back then I thought mostly about the extra engagement from the false vocal folds while doing fry scream but from what I hear since a couple of months, there's also engagement from the arytenoid cartilages. It can be heard especially before I get a "final form" of the scream (extra clicking in the sound). Such a type of fry scream feels way different from a "classical vocal fry scream" (not only because of using more of the chest resonance but also a "density" of the sound and more intense distortion).

Yeah, I watched that video about false cords and this is sound more like it. But I was trying to explain about how to get 'hybrid' distortion and for that I gotta yell while doing throat singing. So you starting with basic breath distortion, I'm mostly training with 'ye', 'me', 'mi' sounds, and then you gotta try to do throat singing while keeping that position. Sound weird, lol, but that's what I'm doing.
Also watched fry videos. The point was about to talk about 'closure' in your larynx aka compression and not what causing the 'vibrations'. Couple months ago I did laryngoscopy (and they gave me the video) and saw that my false cords are not closing at all when I was doing fry, instead it was arytenoids that did 'closure', but they were not involved in the sound I was making. And in the first video you linked you actually explain how to transition from throat singing to fry scream by actually starting to compress sound more with your false cords, which is I believe right way to do.
So yeah, I'm sitting in those two traps, trying to find out my way out, lol.
Can record all those things and upload it somewhere if it's interesting to you.

What's the proper placement for early Chris Barnes or Mike Van Mastrigt (Sinister, etc.) type vocals?

    • @sibilaextremevocal
      @sibilaextremevocal  8 місяців тому

Placement is the same for every type of false chord growl - the false vocal folds but if you ask about their style/ sound color of their vocals, it's about having a slightly lowered larynx while performing the growl. It will make the sound deeper and darker.

Does a video exist explaining how to lower the larynx? @@sibilaextremevocal

    • @sibilaextremevocal
      @sibilaextremevocal  8 місяців тому

I think it should be explained here:
      m.ua-cam.com/video/rV78H2Bx-U0/v-deo.html
Yawning is the easiest way to drop the larynx. Imitating opera singing can also help.

Jazz growl is travis ryan? 😅

That's a very interesting question :D He is definitely using arytenoid cartilages and maybe epiglottis too. I think it's closer to something that is called the "rattle" in CVT:
      cvtresearch.com/description-and-sound-of-rattle/
PS The samples of vocal effects like screaming and growling that they present suck very much but they are good at the anatomy and theory of singing.

I try to keep it in my diaphragm but your sound naturally wants to come from your throat. So I try to practice but I just end up hurting my throat

Hey, I just wanted to ask. I’ve been false cord screaming for a while and only just recently have I felt some discomfort when swallowing and stuff after doing my flase cords.
I think maybe I was trying to make too low of noises too soon but I do not know how to get it to stop now.
The placement doesn’t feel to wrong but I can’t fix this problem. Thanks for any replies!

i started screaming bcs i want coreys sound.. turns out he doesn't use a technique, he just goes for it so uhh yeah i destroyed my voice for no reason..

    • @sibilaextremevocal

His technique, especially during his first years in Slipknot, was extremely intense for the voice box but I think it's possible to achieve a similar sound without hurting yourself but it requires a solid technique (avoiding too high volume, too high air pressure, using too much air, engaging properly the support (core muscles), having the right placement for distortion and avoiding extra tension in the neck, jaw and tongue).
His style reminds of yelling at someone so it's pretty simple in terms of the technique but doing it in a way that is 100% comfortable and safe is a completely different, much harder thing :D

Orcs in Lord Of The Rings have pretty similiar voices as well. The only thing I mean is that it's a different technique. Cookie monster refers to a creature from a tv show. I didn' invent it, that name is present in the vocal dictionary for a while :D
