    I've been trying to learn fry since I was 16 (can do False chord) I'm 21 now, could never do it doing the throat singing way or the grudge sound, istg within like 7 minutes I was able to get it flowing with this method, this shit is literally hacks.

    • @sibilaextremevocal
      @sibilaextremevocal  2 роки тому +3

      I went through a similiar process so I totally get it. My main technique was, and I think still is, false cord and it took me a while to learn the fry scream.
      Beside proper exercises and technique, what helped me in a fundamental way was regular practice, even a few minutes a day of practicing fry. I was focused too much on false cord and singing, and I treated fry as an additional thing but at the same time I expected it to be on a highest possible level, which can't work :D
      Have a great practice and thanks for the comment!

    This was almost my first time trying to scream. Is it normal that my throat gets kinda itchy/tickles? It also triggers my gag reflex a little bit but it doesnt hurt or anything

    • @sibilaextremevocal
      @sibilaextremevocal  2 роки тому +17

      Hi! Itchiness or tickles are unfortunately common BUT not healthy! Gag reflex is definitely not normal too (but I heard that sometimes it appears).
      Anyway, some people can scream in a comfortable way pretty fast and without any technical preparations, but the most of people, for example me or the most of my students, need to build solid foundations at first.
      Those foundations are proper posture (it impacts your breathing and how your muscles are working and if they are in a healthy balance), breathing (if it works good, it's helping you to use properly your breath support), the support (helps you to avoid straining your throat while singing or trying to scream) and basic voice emission (even if you don't want to sing, knowing your natural voice and how to set it properly, will help you to avoid discomfort, tickles or itchiness in your larynx and throat while doing vocals).
      When those foundations are at least ok, you can start to make first steps towards screaming - you will learn faster and without risking any vocal injury or pain.

    • @sibilaextremevocal
      @sibilaextremevocal  2 роки тому +2

      Hi! Fry scream in the beginning is often more quiet than we experct (especially if we normally sing loud) so we try to amplify it subconsciously but it can create extra pressure and tension that will prevent us from getting the fry scream.

      @@sibilaextremevocal I really want to learn it, out of necessity. Our band needs vocals, and good vocalists seem hard to find. However, I don't think it is realistic for me to learn in in a year, let alone be good at it ;p.

    • @sibilaextremevocal
      @sibilaextremevocal  Рік тому

      From what I observe when I practice with my students, those who aim for very fast results or even just think about a possible amount of time that is necessary to learn the fry scream, have much harder time in learning it. Those who are free from any external or internal pressure learn it with much more ease.
      That might be obvious but expecting too much too early can kill the progress. It works pretty similiar to muscle gains - it's a process and it requires some time but most importantly avoiding pushing yourself too much physically or mentally, or both :D
      I practiced with a couple of people who were failing to learn anything consistent and sustainable because the only thing that they kept on thinking about was "I have to learn it fast" instead of doing things step by step. They were making the same mistakes over and over again (for example practicing songs or even whole setlist without having a proper placement for the sound and without ability to produce even one good growl or scream - good means a comfortable and "ok" sounding ones). Some of those people understood it and let the process to gradually progress. Some didn't and they ended up being frustrated and still not able to scream or growl.

      @@sibilaextremevocal Thanks! I’m trying to avoid the whisper. When I first started learning, I had to be quiet so now my muscle memory sort of resorts to a whisper and it’s all coming from my throat, I can’t really get it to do anything else. I can apply a fry to a falsetto head voice like you recommended. but once I try to give that some air the fry disappears and I sound like a crying baby 😂

    • @sibilaextremevocal
      @sibilaextremevocal  2 роки тому

      It sounds like you use too much pressure on your vocal folds. Enough air pressure is necessary to produce a fry scream but overdoing it can result in creating a clean constricted voice.
      Habits and muscle memory are pretty important part of learning any vocal technique, that's why the very beginning of practice is so important. I've learn the fry scream in a week but I was using my throat mostly and I needed 2 years more to get rid of that habit and relearn the fry in a fully proper way.
      Did you try to learn the distortion or kargyraa and use it for creating fry scream?

    • @sibilaextremevocal
      @sibilaextremevocal  2 роки тому +1

      It's almost fry scream, but it's much closer to singing with distortion. If he relaxed his vocal folds a little and added a compression, then he would get a scream.
      What he does is to sing higher and higher, his voice starts to break a little and distortion appears, then he increase the pitch even more, but still it's raspiness with clean, compressed and a little bit "broken" voice. It requires a good control, because it's easy to "break" into the falsetto (then he would sound like a chicken or AC DC vocalist :D).
      Jared is out of tune pretty often, but his sound color is really nice, and his range is pretty wide!

      I am happy that it helped! If volume is at about 3/10 or 4/10, it's a pretty common thing. Usually when the volume is lower, then it's probably a fry noise which is a kind of a "little fry scream" (I don't mean the vocal fry, of course :D).
      If you want to improve the volume, then working on the projection might help:

      It can mean that you did it a little bit too hard and some unnecessary constrictions appeared, but what matters the most is the fact you did it!
      When we try to scream too loud or too high or we focus too much on producing very powerful sound, it can create some unnecessary constrictions and irritation of our vocal folds and overall throat/ soft palate area.
      I would try to check if doing it less forcefully or not so loud/ high would help to increase the comfort and at the same time to deliver the best quality scream.

      Of course, feel free to get a course as well - there are 7 hours of materials leading you step by step through the world of vocals - both clean singing and extreme techniques (singing with distortion, fry scream, false cord etc.)

      If your fry transforms into a clean, tight sound, then it means that your vocal folds are too tight. Did you try other methods?
      From what I observe while doing lessons and from my own experience in the past, the biggest struggle to overcome is finding methods and exercises that suit your own voice.
      Here's a playlist with A LOT of various exercises. I hope that they will turn out helpful for you:
      ua-cam.com/play/PL0IFgUhWfXCshVFMId6QEeMMHvze2ETJ9.html
      When I lead vocal workshops for groups of people, this exercise turns out to be extremely effective and some people who never tried to practice fry scream, learn it on a basic level in a matter of 1-2 hours:

      I respect them and like a few songs from them but I am not the biggest fan for sure! I think that the vocalist should do more lows and maybe even gutturals because his growl is deep as hell and there is a huge potential that in my opinion is not fully used.

      I practiced with people who learnt a basic fry scream with this exercise during the first lesson but I also practiced with the ones that didn't benefit from this method at all and their voices needed totally different methods to learn the fry scream.
      It's very important to find such exercises that fit your voice best. It doesn't have to be this specific method at all - feel free to check out the fry scream playlist on this channel :) In case of any questions, write a comment and I will do my best to help.

      Hi! Many people find the false chord technique much easier than the fry scream.
      To really help you, I would need to know a couple of things:
      1. What is your overall experience with vocals (any singing or screaming lessons, choir practice etc. - everything matters),
      2. How long do you practice fry?
      It would be also great to have a chance to listen to your vocals so if you have any recordings feel free to send me them, of course if you want to - xvocalcenter@gmail.com - I will do my best to help!

      2- More like how long have I tried to even get something close to a fry scream, I haven't practiced because, well... I haven't been able to get them right even once.
      In case that's not what you meant and I misunderstood the question, I try getting it a couple of days a week for about 10 minutes and proceed to give up for an entire month after I see no results
