How To Fry Scream | Metalcore Tutorial

- How to scream is a common question I get asked by many people attempting vocals in the metalcore, deathcore, hardcore, deathmetal and djent sound. So in today's vocal screaming tutorial I'll be showing you my tips and technique on how I fry scream safely, avoiding damage, things to look out for, types of metal vocals, and other great information that I've learned in the past 19 years of doing vocals.
I am Brendon Padjasek of the band Structures and I also played in Northlane for 2 years on the Alien cycle before taking a step back to work from home. Welcome to my channel based on modern metal, djent, and deathcore music, production, mixing and song writing.
In this lesson I'll show you how I haven't killed my vocal chords after almost 20 years of screaming style vocals. A lot of information I learned from my vocal coach / instructor, as well as things I've picked up along the way. Grab some water and try somethings out with me. Thanks!

Me, on a random Tuesday at 11 am: Trying to learn how to scream lol
Hahah hopefully it helped
Thanks for checking it out

Bro I found this comment @11:17 but its sunday
Sunday 10:33 night 😅
"Take a break if youre voice starts to feel fried" no pun intended
Hahaha I didn’t even realize that. Good ear haha
I am an opera singer. My son plays metal core drums (omg what a family!). Thanks for this excellent explanation.
Haha that’s amazing. Never a dull moment. You gotta make a song together lol
Symphonic metalcore album when?
can i get your sons instagram?

My co-workers are very confused at the moment
Hahahaha they’ll understand one day
Well im sat here and im sure my neighbours think im possessed
Hahaha as long as they don’t call the cops, you’re good
I get up at 330am with a 1 hour drive into work, so i already feel like screaming. This will definitely help, awesome video with good info.
Hahahaha I love that! Thanks Kevin! I’m glad it’s helpful
Car is a great place to practice Hahaha
@ribeiropk I agree with this haha
"IMAGE NOT FOUND"😂😂😂
This helped a lot with finding comfort in my own sound. Love that you spoke about how unique vocals can really set a band apart from the rest
Thank you so much. I love doing these UA-cam videos and seeing how some people find them useful and others don’t haha. Glad to help those that I can
Well said man. A lot of "how to scream" videos on youtube easily end up coming across as confusing, but I think you did well to keep it as simple and relatable as possible. Would love to hear that continue into the pitched screaming topic.
Thanks a lot for watching Dylan! Definitely have some extra things to mention in the pitched screaming one based on everyone’s questions. Glad that I didn’t film them in the same day
Are there any topics you’d like me to elaborate on in the next videos?
3:16 this is so funny for no reason lol
Lmfao absolutely. The classical music definitely helps lmao
Meme culture, classical music followed by weird faces.
love the visual combo of anatomy & feeling. thanks man

I've been trying to scream for a year but this video change everything i did it first try. even warm ups are amazingly helped my voice control
Eh thanks so much! Super glad it helps. Also Chris Liepe has a few great videos more in depth on the warm ups a swell
That thumbnail goes HARD ⚰️
Here we go, my 100,000th tutorial after almost 18 years and still not able to scream, lets see of this is the one
Edit: so unfortunately for me one of the steps was " add distortion " which is exactly what i don't know how to do........ bummer
dude, thank you so much, seriously - i have a year of experience fry screaming and i've been playing with a band almost that whole time and this video has helped me take the power and aggression of my screams to the next level. the tip about not holding back is also extremely helpful, cause i've tried doing that at shows to make my voice last longer but it just ended up making my throat feel scratchy.
Thanks so much for watching and I’m stoked it helped ! I also noticed that for myself as well. And it’s weird because it seems obvious to hold back to preserve but it ends up hurting more. Obviously don’t overly push to be obnoxious, but once you find that perfect pocket. You’re good.
I appreciate your humor! Thank you for this! Extremely helpful!
Haha thanks! Glad it was helpful!
This was absolutely a fantastic video for leaning this technique I will definitely be rewatch it!
Amazing. Thank you so much! I plan on making more vocal videos seeing how many people are finding a liking to it
Definitely liking and subbing. And i dont do that too much. Thanks man. Really. Im 31, been writing singing low screaming/yelling for 15yrs now or so. Always have the passion. This video literally helped me in some ways as far as what im doing wrong. I practiced your techniques, and i guess with the previous experience i been having i nailed it. Thanks man
Always so happy to hear that. Thank you my friend! I haven’t made a vocal video in a while but I’ll find the right topic and time to do so
I love what you do man, how you give credit and not have an ego about it. that’s strength.
Thank you! It’s definitely important to give credit where it’s due and also be realistic and self aware haha
I need to try this when I’m home alone 💀
Definitely give it a try and don’t feel like you need to hold back. But also don’t push yourself unnecessarily. It’s a balancing act. Thanks so much for watching!
Finally a Tutorial from one of my Favorite Musicans. Ur amazing bro! Trying it today !
Thank you so much! If you have any questions feel free to pop them down here and let me know how it goes
Awesome video! Love the simple explanation and hearing the different scream types
Thanks Gary! I know you play guitar, but do you do vocals as well?
@@BrendonKPadjasek I do cleans, but my goal for 2024 is branching out into more screams.
@@GaryHiebner Definitely a great goal. I actually want to try learning another style of screaming soon. At least just to try

I always have that:“YOURE A PART OF ME“. I love that scream with that reverb giving such a vibe 💪🏻
Thank you Domi! I love that album and all Northlane albums tbh haha
Definitely interested in that Pitch Screaming video!👍🏼
Great video, thanks for all the tips ! I'm screaming for a while now but I've been kinda confused lately with my voice so any advice is really great and I love the way you scream !
Hey, thanks for checking it out! there are quite a few techniques out there. What are you looking to achieve with your vocals?
@@BrendonKPadjasek You're welcome, your content is really interesting wether it's songwriting or mixing too !
With vocals I mainly try not hurting myself for now. In fact I still haven't found any warmup routine that works for me. Every time I try a warmup found on UA-cam and scream after, my voice is already fucked up in half a verse and I have massive headache. It's frustrating and I end up not working because I'm afraid of hurting myself. Because for the screaming part, I use to know what I wanted to do, well it worked at least, or I thought it worked.
Hey I appreciate all the kind words. Thank you!
And interesting. Where is a lot of your scream coming from in your body?
Great video. I loved seeing you play with Northlane on the Alien tour. You have some nice dance moves too.
Hahaha thank you so much! I just let the music take over
well explained and super helpful, thanks!
Thanks for checking it out!
Great info bro, thanks!
Thank you for checking it out!

I love the information you give. 20 years of doing vocals myself only I'm all self taught so I have a hard time explaining some of what I'm doing especially my crazy highs and I'm constantly being asked for tutorials on them lol.
Yeah it’s so weird when you have to break it down into words. Thanks so much !
@BrendonKPadjasek np man! I'll be sure to check out more of your content. If you ever have the chance too I recommend taking a look at one of my black dahlia covers. Or anything of mine really.
Dude you sound insane, thats awesome!
Thank you for the kind words!
I didn't expect the vocalist for a pretty heavy band to be such a chill and down to earth dude haha, I was also aware of structures long before seeing this, so awesome :) this was really helpful
Eh thanks so much! Yeah I’m just a normal guy that is fortunate to do what he loves for a living. No reason to not be kinda and helpful haha
If only my walls weren't paper thin I would have loved to learn screaming vocals ! As always, great video with valuable advices :)
Dude thank you so much for checking it out. That is very much so the unfortunate reality for a lot of people. Will have to wait until people are out of the house/ apartment or even try the technique into a pillow haha.
Hope to hear Eric’s vocals on the new jams soon
Hahaha damn that sucks man. I feel very lucky to have had semi soundproof room. And back in the days of actually writing songs in a room, had plenty of time to get loud. The cup thing is interesting tho.
How far do you need to have it placed v
I agree that’s it’s vert soul crushing. I guess the best options is renting an hour at a rehearsal space
This is great advice! I noticed tho that this video is recorded at home, a great place to practice screaming surely, however I encourage you, and everyone else, to practice their screaming techniques wherever they go. I used to practice as an inventory sales associate, they loved hearing me randomly belt out a good high pitch growlscream while counting the shelves!
Hahaha as long. As you don’t get fired, and feel comfortable, I say go for it. If you’re holding back or self conscious, definitely more likely to hurt yourself
Спасибо за объяснение возникновения звука на основе своего опыта! Очень познавательно
Great information and tips! Wish I saw this a year ago when it was first posted.. I'll be checking you out more!
Eh thanks so much! I plan to make a few more videos soon
Man, to this day Earth Gazer is still one of my favourite songs and you're one of my top vocalists thanks to that track.

I was listening to structures since high school and didn’t listen to you guys in a while. I’m now in my twenties. I randomly stumped upon this video and had no idea you were from structures until you said so. The way my eyes lit up at this full circle moment.

CJ Mcmahon is one of if not my favorite vocalist because he's so damn good at mixing his actual voice in with the more monster sounding vocals. It's something I dream of.

Hey thanks so much! Hopefully in the future haha. I have to figure out more vocal related videos as most of my recent ones have been guitar based
Awesome!!!
thank you!
I really dig the way you use your distortion. This video was very helpful and you should definitely do that pitch screaming tutorial.
I appreciate that! I definitely am considering it because there are some out there but I feel like they’re missing some information that I found extremely helpful. What kind of vocals do you do?
@@BrendonKPadjasek right now I do false chord. I'm trying to learn how to fry scream and incorporate more of my true voice intoy screams
I never learned false chord and I might look into it in the future. What are some of your favourite vocalists?
@@BrendonKPadjasek It's honestly what I found easier to start with. Originally I was trying to aim for the screaming style Adrian from Northlane used to do but I just didn't know enough about screaming at the time. My favorite vocalist are Adrian fitipaldes, Ryo kinoshita, and Brian Willie
Oh yeah I think Adrian does a similar thing to what I’m doing from touring with him years ago. At least I think so. Not sure what Ryo is doing but he’s a beast and killed it every day on those tours we did
Thank you! I'm hoping this will help me sing along better with Chris and Lane.🤘😆🤘
Yeah they’re great. Thanks!
Such a useful video! I would love to see more vocal related stuff. And i was wondering, what is the best way to go from "distorted" voice to clean round robin. Thank you for your content, it really makes people better musicians!
Hey thank you so much, I appreciate that a lot and I’m glad it’s super useful. To be honest, I don’t really do much cleans at all anymore, but at a point when I was trying I found that it was mostly just easing up in the compression from your chest and kind of shifting the momentum from your chest, to your abdominal/ diagram slightly more. Hope that makes sense
@@BrendonKPadjasek Yes, thank you very much 🙂
So dope! Thanks a lot!
Thank you for checking it out! I have another planned for a couple weeks from now
Nice work, bro! Cheers from Brazil 🇧🇷
Thank you my friend! Glad it was useful!
I've always enjoyed singing along to Linkin Park and 30STM, but could never hit those crazy-scream notes, this is gonna be immensely helpful, thank you!
Hey thank you so much! I’ve always loved Chester’s voice as well. I believe he’s laying back on the pushing side of things so take it easy at first and find your comfortable spot. I know he’s able to hold some screams out for crazy long so it’s all about finding the right compression
I love the video it’s amazing
Thank you so much! Glad it was helpful
this video only makes sense if you know how to fry scream to begin with. I can't get the "chest" distortion at all. if i push like you said my voice breaks. I have been a singer for 17+ years in semi pro band, but never managed to figure out fry scream
That would be the point where you reach the scream, where your voice breaks. As long as it’s not hurting your throat, your golden
Yeah! Screaming is basically using your break in a safe way. That’s why it feels so silly at the beginning. But it shouldn’t hurt.
@adrienrequin5632 exactly
I just unlocked a new region of voice thanks to you :)
I’m so glad! Thank you! And always remember, if it feels like you’re doing damage, take a step back
That sorta voice cracking hollering thing that happened on his lower scream to the end is what made it click for me a while back.
It's that sorta rasp that appears when your voice is breaking between head voice and chest voice. If anyone is having trouble after watching this tutorial try ramping up like he does but when your voice breaks into head voice try going back and forth, and letting yourself yodel.
100% Thanks!
Def want a pitched screaming vid. This is sick
Amazing. Thank you for watching. Seems like a lot of people want a pitch screaming tutorial as well
yes yes yes. singing and screaming and moving on stage is one of the best sports of all time :D i totally agree

Really helpful tutorial, I want the pitch screaming tutorial !
Thank you so much! I’ll definitely be sure to make that soon if more people are interested. What kind of vocals do you do?
@@BrendonKPadjasek I don't do any vocals atm, this vid will help me get there tho! thanks man
@@joellord9518 Absolutely. After reading some comments I have some additional information I plan to roll out in some future videos
Rule one: if you can't do the technique quietly, you are doing it wrong. Been singing 34 years in extreme metal.
Oh sick! What band are you in?
Would love to hear some of your stuff
I just started my career as a vocalist about a week ago. At first I had a lot of trouble changing the pitch of my own voice and i just know how to false cord in the wrong way. This video really helped my progress. thank you so much!
That’s awesome. I wish you good luck on your journey. It’s a long one that requires a lot of work
Awesome
Thank you!
Great video
Thank you my friend!
This is perfect. I'm going to practice and see if I can do it. By the way, I've watched a lot of Chris Liepe videos - it's nice to see him being quoted.
Oh yeah Chris is great. Love his approach and explanations
Thank you. Hope it works out, just be sure to take it slow and if you feel strain , go a bit softer and take the steps in parts
I would add that this technique is usual referred to as a fry scream. The other one mentioned typically used in the death side of the core/metal genre is typically called false chord.
The fry’s you use are definitely mixed in with a lot of natural voice but it doesn’t necessarily need to be this way.
Using more compression with a fry scream can lead to some pretty sweet tones for all sides of metal.
I absolutely agree with you on all of what you said. The draw back to introducing more compression with a fry scream is that you lose a bit more of the person’s individual sound. And then you end up sounding like the large majority of vocalist that sound quite similar - indistinguishable.
That’s why I titled the video as such, as I’m trying help people find their individual approach.
Thanks for watching and for commenting the things I didn’t mention in the video. Appreciate it!
What kind of vocals do you do?
Instant sub 🖤
Ehh thanks so much. I’m trying to think of more vocal videos to make, do you have any more questions or things you’re curious about ?
@@BrendonKPadjasek Absolutely my friend! I literally got more tips and techniques on watching your videos than any other channel on UA-cam! Freaking gold mate! 🙏🤘
Ahh I can't think of anything off the top of my head but I will definitely jot some ideas down as I think of it! Truly appreciate the help!!
Awesome! I’m so happy that it all helped and can’t wait to hear about your questions and progress
Love the video but the beginning had me laughing 💀.” I’ve been screaming for 19 years now” imma take what you say to heart dawg
Hahahah thank you. Yeah I started in grade 9
my neighbors literally called 911 on me. im so embarrassed to go outside now 😂 i had to apologize to them 😅
Hahahaha did they call because of the noise or because they were worried?
Sounds like you did it right and they need a mind they're a business lol
@derrickcook1824 I agree haha
I sing a lot at my work as a daycare teacher, and I find that my voice strains throughout the day. So, im definitely going to try these exercises to see if they help.
Oh they should definitely help with removing strain especially for actual singing. My vocal instructor was an amazing vocalist and I can definitely say my projection improved drastically using these techniques.
I learned from loosing my voice every few days at band practice 20 years ago. Literally no one showed me anything, just screamed at the top of my lungs for hr’s…it took a few years before I could fully control all diff styles of distorted vocals. Now 20 years on I can do any style with zero damage...My normal voice is also fine btw ..it is amazing how much damage it can heal from. I do feel like learning at low volume then getting louder later would be safer for people. After all these years I would say learning Volume/breath control is the most important thing.
Absolutely agree about the volume / breath control aspect.
Glad it's healed up ahah
thanks
Thank you for watching!
Nate Barcalow from Finch is my inspiration to nail a good scream some day 😭 his vocals are amazing
Oh yeah I grew up listening to finch
Finally learned how to pronounce your last name as well - great video btw
Haha thanks I honestly am probably not even pronouncing properly myself as I unfortunately don’t speak Polish. But hopefully I got close enough haha
Thanks for watching! Which point(s) stood out as most helpful?
@@BrendonKPadjasek tbh everything, never thought about attempting vocals but I'm kinda compelled to give it a try now
Hell yeah. I’m stoked it helped. Let me know if you have any other questions after trying!
I love it when I just pop into the youtube, minding my own business, and an unhinged, let's-write-a-brand-new-chapter-to-the-human-voice-chronicles, next level fucking throat philosopher just wanders through, leaving behind a trove of timeless wisdom and brain-altering practical, applied knowledge and skills. Just spewing forth excellence and profoundly deep understanding, basically every time the mouth-hole opens up to talk about mouth-hole related information.
Seriously, what a great video. ...you should probably just delete it. Nobody, myself included, deserves to be simply handed all this stuff. The world is not worthy bro. ...yeah man. Props to Liepe too. I can see, that you are in his league. And ain't nobody in Chris's league. He's pretty much completely alone at the top. And then you showed up. Truly amazing work. I mean, realistically, you seem clearly to be one of the absolute top, aggro, loud-mouths on planet earth. I mean it. And art is good. And music is great. I like that stuff too. But a talent like yours... I just hope that, maybe someday, the stars align. And there is some dick-head, corrupt official, idk - public blight on society, and like they need to be derailed and shut down. And somehow you are in the right place at the right time, and cameras are running, and you just get to, you know, put in some work. And just have at it for the whole world to see. The awesome power, of aggressively getting the truth across, in devastating fashion. You are doing the Lord's work here. Just know this.
Hahaha thank you so much my friend! I have more videos planned on the topic, seeing how many people are interested in learning to scream. If you have any questions lmk!
This is an awesome tutorial for someone who's never taken vocal lessons. Even though I don't plan on screaming, I found that I couldn't get the distortion to come from my chest and end up feeling it in my throat. Any tips for getting it to come from the right place?
I do plan on making another video on it. I guess I am technically closing my throat a little bit to get the last bit of distortion out. I just thought if I said “tighten your throat a little bit” people would more likely hurt themselves by using it way too much
Also i stil cant believe that structures made a comeback(?) New album is awesome, i wish there will be a sequel 🙂
Haha thank you for checkout the newest ep! You’ll have to keep your ears and eyes peeled haha
How about the Low Grunt sounds 😂 you guys make so many sounds with grunts, screeches, squeaks and squealing 😵🔥
Hahah I wish I could. I never could figure out the lows
Love your music in Structures and Northlane , man! Thanks for the video! \m/ >.< \m/
Thank you so much! Glad you found the channel!
This video just randomly came up, but I dig it.
If you're into unique voices and heavy rhythms, and you haven't heard of them, I suggest The Bronx. "History's Stranglers" is a good place to start. Matt Caughthran has a great voice and Jorma Vik is a drummer for the ages, especially on that song. Polyrhythms for days.
Oh yeah ! I used to listen to the band a lot before they became a mariachi band
I love that old punk stuff. Super cool.
Thanks for watching!
@@BrendonKPadjasek they're still doing the punk thing! They did a really cool video on Halloween 2020 where they flipped between The Bronx and Mariachi El Bronx songs. It was really good. It's up on UA-cam if you're interested
@kevinmbyers oh that’s sick! Yeah I definitely need to check that out. I loved them back in the day

Thanks so much for watching. Let me know if this all helps and if you have any more questions!
the unaccompanied bach violin is great, fun piece to play
Haha thank you. That’s when you know it’s serious time
Thanks for the tutorial! I believe this is a first time I've seen someone mention a "chest distrotion". I can do a similar sound to what happens 7:27, but from what I've gathered from other tutorials and lessons, isn't it coming from false cords? I'm just trying to wrap my head around those metal techniques. Also, do you do 1-on-1 lessons for vocals? Really like how you explain stuff.
Eh thank you so much! Quite honestly, I don’t even know what the technique is. People have told me it’s false chord, fry and fold distortion. None of them really mean anything to me lmao but the majority of people have referred to it as fry so I go with that.
I just go with “does it sound like a human or an animal”
I came here to learn how to recreate Lacey Sturm's I'm so sick vocals :D subbed
Thank you!
Great video. Just one correction. It's the soft palate that moves forward or back not the uvula. The uvula is just the hanging ball.
Thanks for pointing that out. I’ll have to let my vocal instructor know as well
Gotta love a versatile guitarist though
Thank you so much. I also play drums lmao
What I personally find important as a third in a band is a bassline that is not just kinda there but well thought out. Sounds like a given but so often the basslines are just there but they have little to no personality.
For sure. Especially with the heavier genres where the tendency is to follow the guitar
Great Vid. How long do you think your warm up will last before you start singing?
Thank you so much for watching! Usually about 15 minutes. I kind of gage it around how my body feels while warming up. If I feel ready and activated sooner then I’ll start sooner.
Or later haha.
Sometimes I notice that I’m just not in the right spot so I won’t do vocals that day
"hrm hmm BuuuuttHEAAAD SUUUUUUuuuUUUUuuucks!!!!!"
Everybody watching this video with their tongues going nuts
Lmao exactly!
I've been out of the game for a few years now my highs sound like Freiza from DBZ 😂
to me a ton of vocal advice is so utterly confusing to me. like for example the tongue warm up. ive heard that the tongue should not be active during alot of singing. I'm not sure if that applies to screaming as well but it i think it does since the tongue is connected to the hyoid bone which in turn can mess up the positioning of your larynx cause its connected with that as well. so I'm not sure if moving the tongue around gives you the opportunity to relax it or if its inviting to much activity there.
also my favorite scream is from the singer of ambleside. love them so much
I wouldn’t say I use the tongue while screaming but the warm up is to activate the muscles that are going to be used. Just like how a bicep curl is drastically different from a bicep stretch
The tongue movements I find work my cheeks and jaw area and get them prepared for the vocal
i have a teacher now
I grew up a classically trained singer, and my biggest challenge with screaming is the chest distortion, I think because I was taught not to do that for so long. Do you have any other resources or info for how to generate that distortion safely?
I've watched countless other videos on fry and false chord screaming and have the base of those techniques down, but can't project it or do it consistently. Your style in this video is exactly what I want to learn, but it sadly is not coming naturally at all. Thanks for any advice you might have!
I do have another screaming video in the works so stay tuned in the coming weeks
This dude .. damn bro i m on day 0 with my scream learning journey and you on 8:45 just f.....g :D damn bro respect for you r hard work in the years.
Haha I appreciate it my man! I wish you luck on your journey and if there’s any way I can help you out, let me know.
I don’t really have any ideas for more vocal videos so it’s up to all of you
