All these ascii roguelikes are easily pitched by the single sentence that “they sacrifice graphical fidelity for mechanical complexity.” If a person is willing to learn the visual language of the game, the reward is simply a game with depth that practically nothing else can compete with. I legitimately got excited when I saw that you were dabbling in it so consider it a hard yes from me about seeing more of it.
With CDDA specifically it helps that so many talented artists have contributed to the tilesets over the years. Even cobbled together as it is from different contributors, the current default tielset looks way nicer than you would expect from something that's just ascii behind the scenes. And the modular stuff like vehicles and player gear is legitimately impressive how well it fits together.
I think ''mechanical complexity'' of that game can kinda be oppresive at time, not nessasary the best compromise for the visual.Im not saying its all bad but its a very hard and quite painfull game to learn to play and enjoy.
@@diegomaynez1425 ...its a tileset, there isnt much animation to go with it,i wouldnt call it much if you ask me.Also,i heard that the guy who did the tileset quited or something.
Quick tip: don't break doors with your combat knife, just use a plank you can get from bashing chairs. Also if you break beds down you get 50 rags per tile. It is kinda cheaty but you can craft a ton of makeshift bandages from the rags and press E to spam use them on a wound and it increases your first aid really fast.
@@jeri11a23 because most mens' wives don't like video games. So when a man finds a game that he likes, and his wife likes, it's a monumental experience. My wife likes to watch me play zomboid, which is fuckin amazing to me since it's probably my favorite game. She also enjoyed playing 7 days to die with me on PS4 for 10 hours at a time. Some of the best times of my life lol
@@jeri11a23 Women are a minority in gaming for a reason; generally speaking women do not enjoy video games as much (studies show most women prefer hanging out on social media when they have an online presence). The ones that DO play video games usually (not always) like specific things that are very different to what men like; such as decor centric games, dress up/customisation games, simulation (survivals or not) games, animal breeding games (husbandry), evolution games, etc. The survival/simulation games tend to attract more women to them as simulations are more appreciated by women. Btw, this is just where I've experienced women to be in high numbers. Simulation is the most popular from what I see, followed by animal breeding/husbandry (The Sims, Second Life, The Isle, Beasts of Bermuda, Lioden, Howrse, etc, all have a very high female population).
You won't need to disinfect anything unless the status of your limb is blue. Yes, disinfecting wounds does make them heal faster but bandaging light wounds is usually enough. Burning antiseptic on barely damage limbs is just the ideal way to get killed in the moments where it would have actually been useful. When its green its too late for disinfectant and you need to find antibiotics and pray for the best while getting rest and stay fed. Your biggest enemy in this game is getting complacent with bleeding. While Project Zomboid and CDDA share some mechanics it's a deadly mistake to make to rely on Zomboid knowledge to get through CDDA and vice versa. It'll get you killed and waste ressources. Also never hurts to try some new starts to mix up your playing pattern and not super rely on using the same strategy each time to retain flexibility. Next tip: You can collect bedsheet and make a kinda bedsheet rope with them to climb down some ledges. As for tilesets i find yours a bit bland. I prefer the Undead people tileset as every enemy is easy to distinguish on first glance and your character model looks better as well.
Sdg deleted his tileset after yet another drunken rage. Hasn't been updated in months and really wasn't great to begin with imo. Theawesomeboophis has a backup and is the current curator iirc
One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet: Your martial arts style is set to "none". Martial arts will help you immensely with combat, and the "brawling" one is automatically unlocked at melee level 1. I'd use that one. Other styles you can find books for, or choose a trait/profession for at character creation. They all have different weapons they can be used with, scale with different stats, and have their set of skills. You can also look at the wiki for more details and choose one that fits your playstyle and build. Oh, and try hitting up a grocery store or similar and grab (G) a shopping cart. Until you have a car it's the definitive best way to carry more stuff without getting your torso over encumbered (which can be a death sentence).
As someone who (briefly) spent some time on the street, I can confirm that a shopping cart is exactly as useful as this game shows it to be. I’m impressed they thought of it and implemented it.
@@joearnold6881 They are some of the most quiet shopping carts ever, and have amazing off-road performance. =P I recently planned a whole night time raid just to get a grocery cart... the local store was infested with giant roaches and zombies. Had to use a gun to reliably hit the roaches... ended up bringing out the grenades. Was worth it for the cart. xD
Your streams of this game made me get into it! It's such a fantastic game, and it's free! Been having a blast BTW I think you will have an immense amount of success if you craft a wooden spear, it can attack from 2 spaces away so you can poke zombies, run one square out to safety, then bait them in and poke again. Currently I'm doing this and I've cleared half a small town near my evac shelter. This one small change in tools and tactics and I'm not even being hit anymore. There is a lot to learn about combat!
nooo you can't just ignore all the possible creative weapons the game offers you. hahaha sharp spear go poke But yes, spear weapons have a trait called "Reach Attacks" which basically allow you to make (very short) ranged attacks with the weapon.
Tried the spear kiting, works well though your crude knife spears break often. xD I've been doing the lumberjack start with a martial art, Fior de Battalgia, focuses on blocks and knockdowns. Works with axes (no reach) and polearms (reach atk). Might try out quarter staff memes on another character and stun lock everything to death, cudgel is pretty good for stun locking too. =P But when the mutations are common (especially in cities) the spear reach loses some of its monopoly. Having a pistol for killing stuff you can't hit or don't want to melee would be the next objective after looting around.
One advanced feature that is a GODSEND once you make use of it, is the automatic zone item placement feature. By pressing Y you can add tiles with item categories. When you've setup your item placement zones whenever you return from a loot run you can throw everything in a big pile and press O and your character will automatically sort the loot in their respective tiles. In the same Zone manager you can also add a fireplace zone, so when you've lit a fire it will then be automatically replenished with the fuel items in the chosen zone tile. If you've set up a static base or alternatively using a vehicle as your base it's a mindblowing timesave and QoL feature that many might overlook because it's not apparent what it does. It takes a bit to set up but when it's done everything related to loot sorting is automated for the rest of your run. I often add the zones continually as I play when I need them to avoid having to set up tiles for every category at the start (kinda sucks doing everything at once to then die 5 minutes later lol). A good tip regarding combat in urban environments is to use the Grab feature to move furniture into tactically smart positions (if you've got the time) before going into combat, just to eek out every possible advantage you can get. On the same note if you need to sleep in a sketchy place, you can move furniture to close off all the doors and windows for a quick low effort barricade. Another good tip is use the map to your advantage, by marking dangers, loot and bases/caches and fx by pressing the E button to mark houses as cleared and "fully" looted. Being this systematic is especially useful if you go back to a playthrough you haven't played in a while. Because of the abstract and complex nature of the game it is one the best games when it comes to being able to use your environment for gameplay purposes, but it is not immediately apparent until you explore the game and tries to be a bit creative with your problem solving.
@@SaintSC05 Glad to hear that, it's truly an addicting game. Btw if you're playing 0.F stable, beware that soonish a new stable will likely be released afaik
Drainpipes are your friend! To cross cities in the early game, I run from drainpipe to drainpipe, climbing up onto rooftops to catch my breath between sprints.
@@David-py7os new turret location is the transcoast logistics. There are at least 10 turrets in there. Maybe 11. Its enough ammo to level pretty much anything that can be leveled with 5.56
@@ottovonbismarck6600 In labs yup. There are more locations to get ammo of a larger variety so I don't mind though. Btw have you explored your nearest fema camp lately?
@@dtly50 No the normal militäry turret of the standart ammo typ has now only 120. I can only load 120 rounds in these turrets as well. I did not test other turrets though. Also bunker turrets have only 120 rounds. No i did not. I have not spoted a fema camp lately. I get my 840 rounds from bunkers mostly or some other militäry stuff i throw lumps of steel at, at night 😆. I do only hardcore runs anway, so i dont travel that much, but make a base as fast as possible. My current settings are 3× zombie spawn, 120% monster speed, fully evolved zombies, though starting 1 year later with a 0.1 zombie evolution rate, using the no hope mod, where most vehicels are destroyed and there is almost no fuel and food and other stuff. Also wander spawns are on. Also using a charackter with imperceptive healer, default speed, and just starting out as a normal survivor. Current state i almost died trying to shot a singel predator down, while alerting almost 50 fully upgraded zombies in hordes nearby, which i barely escaped with 2 dots and red stamina 😆. I got lucky there. The problem was that they surounded me and i had to shot because a 168 speed zombie predator is a littel fast 😀 Also i had only a normal m27 luckly found one soldier bodysite, where it took me almost 30 minutes to chase all the zombies away to get the gun and ammo.
I love watching cataclysm, also this Longplay format is great. Listening to you Wax Poetically is great, but it's also nice to watch unedited stuff like this.
I'd love to see more of this game. While it's not something I can play all that well, something about watching other people zen out and explore tactical turn based roguelikes is really relaxing.
Advanced inventory is nice and you can set it to A (all nearby) or sometimes D(grabbed or nearest vehicle container) as well as I (inventory) or a number for the direction. There's also a layering menu that can show you exact encumbrance and where the layering penalties are coming from and let you sort your clothing (topmost layer is checked first on the coverage chance roll for protecting you from a blow, and then the rest of what you're wearing in descending order)
Save the antisceptic for deep wounds or at least significant damage. Using it on light damage is wasteful. Antisceptic is vital for survival. Also, craft makeshift bandages out of rags until you level your healthcare up to 2. Then craft boiled makeshift bandages. Those should allow you to reach ‘average’ bandage level. Which is decent. And the material to make them is plentiful. I think you should turn skill rust off, honestly. It doesn’t seem to be working as intended.
Yeah I never play with skill rust, as the primary enjoyment I get from the game is the skill grind and crafting. I've found the health stat they added somewhat recently not very transparent. People have said that herbal teas and such increase the health modifier, but it is too easy to end up in a spiral of -200 health and -20 modifier when looking in the debug menu.
Disinfected wounds do heal faster though. However, cattail jelly isn't hard to make and is good for a generic antiseptic. Health stat is mostly healing rate and resistance to disease (and recovery time). Its not too hard to up. Junk food, fatty food, drugs will drop it. Veggies, fruit and some drinks will increase it. Dandelions, burdocks and pine needle tea are good ways to increase it fairly easily in spring. Summer and autumn there's fruit everywhere so just living off that will rapidly increase it.
@@sathra4036 Does starting with underweight or overweight heavily impact health stat? Since new characters I've played that have it always immediately catch a cold, even with sufficient clothing.
@@billpost4205 Yeah, those traits start with -health IIRC. Mouth environmental protection helps protect against flu and such I think. Since filter/gas mask cartridges don't get used up unless they're actually protecting against something, there's no real reason to not have them on most of the time anyways. Catch your breath slower though. Health stat increases gradually though. So regularly eating healthy foods over several days is better than binging.
I just started this today. To know that Rob here even has trouble with it actually brings me comfort, because he's one of the best strategy/sim gamers I've ever seen. CDDA may be one of the most difficult games ever made. Far harder than Rimworld, even harder than Zomboid, maybe even than Dwarf Fortress, though I don't play that.
I learned that rationing antiseptics and other disinfecting materials is really good for longevity. Typically I just try and do all my healing with bandages (usually makeshift ones from a single curtain, just like zomboid!) and save antiseptics for infections and deep bites. Another way to stretch your disinfectants is to find cotton balls and douse them. You get four uses per dose that way, making a single bottle last considerably longer. Also have to remember that if you have a follower, they might want some antiseptic-soaked cotton balls as well in case they get bit/infected without you constantly having to check on them. I don't think the alcohol on the cotton balls evaporates over time either, so they can store indefinitely. I enjoy seeing others play CDDA and playing it myself. The level of care taken into making it is really admirable.
Oh shit I remember seeing your comment on a tutorial video a few days ago when i was looking for one to see whats new since i havent played in forever, then tried searching to see if you played it. also even though it is turn based keep in mind everyone has a specific speed and yours can be faster or slower than a second. this is especially good to know when fighting zombies because you can observe how fast or long it takes for them to move and be able to kite them easier. Also the quick strikes i believe is actually specific to a weapon, they can list what abilities they do such as stuns or sweeps and it randomly does them.
Oh also yeah city starts are fairly hard especially if you are just learning the game, the evac shelter has pretty much absolutely everything you need to get started with every possible mechanic in the game. Plus it actually has a quest in it you can access on the computers to start meeting factions.
i've played this game a lot and i can say i suffer from irl hoarder's disease, i carry like 2-3 backpacks at all times and typically avoid melee unless i really feel like it due to having plenty of medical supplies, its really strange but what usually kills me is a dumb decision that usually shouldn't lead to what kills me but does anyways, basically i wanted to clear space so i inhaled a ton of normal chewing gum, not caffeinated or nicotine gum, normal gum which gave my character such a "stimulant boost" that he had a heart attack not 4 steps later and instantly died
Antiseptic can be made in bulk with cattails once you get basic skills and is only NEEDED when your limb has a deep bite. I like to store it in a 3L jar and bring it with me for long missions or scouting expeditions as it does help you heal quicker and I always take Interceptive Healer so any bonus for me is vital. Once I get an IFAK Pouch I then switch to a small jar so I still have room for my splints, Hemostatic Powder, and other med items while all fitting in the IFAK. Also the combat knife is one of the best melee weapons in the game for bleeding besides the RivTech knife. Especially if you get a melee weapon skill that’s compatible.
Yay Cataclysm! 💓 I am used to watch Silver Dragon Gaming doing runs of the game regularly (I have learned how to play from him), but he curently seem to be away since a few month now. I hope he is alright 🙁 I'm happy to see you take over the role! That game is so good that it need to be more known, I am just at 5 min in the video but I wish past you good luck! And I hope you will make more of it in the future 😀
A perfect game for your edited video content, I think. Filled with story and atmosphere, simply begging for some deep narration. A great game to enjoy through your eyes, especially for an audience unfamiliar with this style/ genre. Your specific commentary and editing would give a much needed touch of accessibility and intrigue. Most definitely more of this.
Just wanted to say that I love to see you playing CDDA and would definitely watch more! Also a small tip: athletics currently does nothing except decide how well you can swim which means it is practically useless so in future it’s probably not worth it to waste the time on levelling it up.
Consider a ‘sheltered’ start and keep restarting until you spawn at an LMOE bomb shelter. It will be a winter start, though. But you can use the cold to preserve animal meat in the small upstairs room. And you can level your tailoring skill making things to stay warm in like hat, gloves, etc. It’s a very good starting base as most enemies will never be able to access you there and you’ll likely be far from cities. Then you can take your time preparing in the early game until you’re ready to get in the mix. It’s a very unforgiving game and you can easily get unlucky and die during the early game when you m are vulnerable and supplies are low. So it’s not cheesy to give yourself a head start. You’re gonna die anyway. Everybody dies eventually.
Sheltered is actually one of the hardest starts when it comes to creating a character that can actually do anything. You are horrifically outscaled by year 2 undead and the first encounter with zombies is probably your last. Your only bet is to wander around the wilderness, never really able to progress into high tier.
If you like having to think through your actions and using everything available to survive, You may like Underrail. That game is an incredibly hard and rewarding CRPG. When i played it, I related it to a series of death puzzles that i can overcome with proper use of skills/items. Also i was playing on normal. Also its not a roguelike. Its closer to traditional fallout in design. I also recommend zooming in to 150%, easier to see everything and doesnt effect the tactics really. If you end up playing it on the channel, Try playing one quest per video. Most of the quests are very engaging.
Don't let the simple oldschool graphics fool you, CDDA is legit the best singleplayer zombie survival game out there (yes even better than Project Zomboid which of itself is a _very_ good game), and in general one of the best game I've ever played! The development of the game is impressive because the community at large can contribute. This means that now over a decade after the game came out there are still daily updates. The complexities of all the ingame systems and things you can do is quite frankly stunning. All this makes for an extremely deep game with ton of replayability and things to discover and do. It's one of these games where when you encounter a problem you ask yourself, "how would I do it in real life and can I do this in game?" - and the answer is surprisingly often yes, there is so much room for creativity!
Bit late to this, but in general I've been playing for 2-3 months on cdda, and I can tell you that this game has to be one of the most complex games I've ever played in my life. As in you could spawn in the lab escape start, get a great spawn, then beat an escaped mutant to a pulp with the back end of a screwdriver.
Easily the most realistic and accurate game I have ever played (obviously ignoring the whole zombie/eldritch apocalypse thing). I found this game once by searching for a dwarf fortress-like game for android. Immediately fell in love. Exactly what I look for in games. Brutally unforgiving with an unparalleled attention to detail. If you encounter an issue, stop and think about what you might do in real life
I couldn't believe the level of detail they put into item descriptions. Even something simple like a child's balloon will let you know everything about it, that it can hold liquid, that it's not a rigid object, its weight, etc. It's so insane.
@@Nightweaver1 fr I saw on reddit earlier today someone came up with the idea of pouring ethanol across 3 or 4 squares, then on all but one of the squares, pour one unit each of magnesium and oxidizing powder. Then lure in your zombies, light the tile that *doesn't* have Mg or powder on it (i.e. the "just ethanol" tile) and run for your life. If you're into chemistry, you probably already have an idea of what's going on here, but basically in the game, this mixture, when ignitied, creates an explosion which would be the equivalent of a low-yield grenade (and that is per square of Mg/powder mixture). The more Mg/powder you use, the bigger the boom. Though do be careful, I would assume it goes off pretty quickly. In general, the rule of thumb I follow is simply : "If you can do it in real life, you can more than likely do it in CDDA" And if you excuse all the sci-fi/zombie apocalypse stuff, I've honestly yet to encounter a situation that contradicts that rule. That's gotta say something
Use a pole arm style weapon to kill enemies two tiles away so they can’t hit you. Wooden spear is easy to make and pretty effective. If you can find a tool with drilling you can make a knife spear. Which is a little better than the wooden spear.
Ah yes, the return of the king. Joking aside though Cataclysm is fun if you don't take it too seriously, I've never been able to get into it though, probably because I've used mods on my first playthrough and every playthrough since and thought "man, this won't cause problems." and then proceeded to get either roflstomped by zed types I've never heard of or ran out because the starting town nearby has nearly five times as many mobs as normal and a Mi'go saw me when I was pissing around on the roof of the evacuation shelter. Now I'm just waiting for that gameboy inspired tileset Hollow Moon to be finished since that looks nice. Hope you continue uploading videos for CDDA though dude.
Howdy ho! I remember looking at this game a while ago, I'll pick up a copy if you like it so much.. if I ever move on from Rimworld... XD Cheers! Hope you're doing well out there 🖤🙏🌌
Rim world is way different then CDDA. Rimworld is more of a colony sim. CDDA is a solo survival game with some colony aspects. While both are highly addictive it definitely is different types of moods for each CDDA is either a super quick game if your wreckless or a long long burn if your cautious. Rimworld except for a couple of the starts is always a long burn game of stories about interactions between the characters
Hmm, I think I got some memories mixed up, there's a couple survival games on my wishlist but this one doesn't seem to be on Steam..! Gonna drag my PC inside pretty soon and do some downloading. XD Always loved zombie apocalypse stuff - and this has some Lovecraftian influence too, if I heard that thing about Mi-Gos properly! I'm definitely down to check it out... reminds me of some games I used to play as a younger lad..
Just a few tips: Smashing everything in every room besides a table to craft at and crafting literally anything is better than reading to start. Take down all curtains and turn the long strings in to thread, it's a very valuable resource The apartment building is amazing Being overweight is a huge positive with no draw back and you should always try to be on the highest end of overweight as possible. If you get in to a bad situation, as long as you can find a drink, you an survive for days without food I would mention armor stuff, but your character starts with great armor
This is actually really nice change from the Project Zomboid gameplay, hope this still comes back in the near future. Great story telling and very deep once you get a bit more into it
You can tell a programmer programmed this program, lol. (just kidding I understand what you meant.) I have been enjoying your videos lately. Keep up the good work.
Looks like you're doing pretty good so far. There's a lot of advice I could give, I would recommend getting an extended weapon like a spear for optimal Thermopylae action at the start. I think you can make a knife spear or wooden spear without any crafting knowledge at all. Combining that with the sort of hit and run tactics you're already using with the knife is pretty useful. Other than that, maybe try to rob a library, and keep your eyes open for bicycles.
Don’t forget, you can crouch or prone now. Also, you can climb fences. Try to keep your torso encumbrance in the 20’s in melee situations. Your quick strike wasn’t due to your ‘quick’ trait, but rather the weapon you were using. I’m only a few minutes into the video atm but I’ll keep posting tips as the video progresses. I’m pretty experienced with this game and I love your channel so I just wanna help.
So the thing where only foot encumbrance was counted for melee fixed? I can't remember atm. Cause that was pretty weird. Fighting perfectly fine with a military backpack, chitin armour and duster.
"zero is the groundfloor -> a programmer made this game" at least in germany we dont count floor levels starting on ground level. the first floor is the one above ground level. so a building where 6 apartments are above each other has 5 floors and the ground level and below ground level are the negative levels -1, -2. and iam pretty sure we are not the only ones doing that. so it could also be that the guy who made the game made it that way because of his cultural background.
Ambiguous amphibian provides for all your redundant statement needs, giving great hits such as, we're going to be engaging in weapon combat, a program programmed this, and many more...
Ngl i play this game on phone and yes its still really good , kinda weird that its completely free to play on mobile and is easy to download THEY ALSO HAVE ANDROID PORTS FOR EVERY SINGLE EXPERIMENTAL VERSION THAT COMES OUT DAILY THAT SOME HIGHASS DEDICATION and i respect em for it .
You could get the "Graphical Overmap" mod to get something of a happy medium between an ASCII map and the new overmap tilesets. It uses symbols instead of letters that represent their tiles very well. Just make sure to check the installation instructions, because you need to do a tiny edit in a config file.
Likely too late to be seen but I support this motion of throwing amphibious into the water. I just hope it would be a bit more serious video since it seems 9/10 Barotrauma videos are "Huehue look how funny the characters moves and I just injected the crew with lethal doses of morphine, hilarious!" and then it ends with absolutely nothing being done and 0 actual gameplay is shown.
Tried playing it and I suck at being sneaky nor strategic. I just built a character who hates book, who is illiterate, who is squeamish, but is a novice martial artist who is skilled in melee combat, with taekwondo. Surprisingly, she can kick zombies all day except for the tough ones and feral freaks who kept throwing stones. The bane is ferals who always throw stones and hurts alot.
Sweet. I don't know why you privated the other CDDA vids, but that's how I found this channel and got into it. Wanted to go back to them to learn more.
Finished watching this after i've put a lot of hours in to CDDA, when you escaped, I think the moon was at a brighter phase. Which I've found to be the perfect time to do night time stuff, you can be detected better than in the darker nights, but your own detection makes it easy to manage zombie aggro. Except for cockroaches... I hate those. xD
Respect for the successful escape. Ive started cdda a weeks ago again but still just cant do any citystart. Even if i dont like the idea of starting as a "pro" (aka Military), its super interesting to see how other people work arount the cataclysm. Im Happy to see more from you!
I learned about the game through this video. I keep dying over and over, but I enjoy how brutally punishing the game is, if you let your guard down once early game, you're a goner
Pretty cool to see you give CDDA a try. My favorite tileset was/is the MSX++UndeadPeople tileset, although it's no longer 'officially' available due to some drama involving the creator-- but nice if you can find a copy, as it's the most complete and has good contrast. Chibi Utica is pretty decent as well -- it makes the char/zombie sprites much easier to see.
The good thing about C:DDA is that ANY GAME that you tell me that is good (specially paid ones) and even "free to play" will not par to what C:DDA have reached judging that they are completely free. It is when dedication slapped capitalists. C:DDA Devs: Oh! you need money to create good game? *slaps them with the C:DDA game* here greedy guy try it you might learn a thing or two.
Focus isn't so much your mood as it is a resource you spend to learn skills. The higher your focus, the faster you learn but your focus will drain equally fast. It regenerates over time at a rate proportional to your actual mood. So basically, if your focus is low, get your mood high and then spend your time doing time consuming tasks, things you don't really care about learning, or things which don't train skills while it regenerates. Then when your focus is high again, cash it in on whatever skill you actually want by reading skill books or doing other things that train quickly. Being time efficient is fairly important early in the game because zombies evolve over time. Many a run has been wasted by someone locking themselves in a basement for a month to grind, only to get torn apart by fully evolved monstrosities the day they step outside, because they never scavenged the equipment they would need to fight such things.
Im so vastly torn on this game nowadays, I played a ton around 0.E and 0.F but it seems like there has only been more micromanaging added, im REALLY not a fan of the new skill system. hopefully they manage to make it "fun" to use sometime. Remembering a bunch of small tasks that require me to click through menus isnt really what I find fun about the game. Its such a great tactical turn based RPG with heavy rougelike elements, I suppose the survival and "realism" is either a love it or hate it thing. maybe the game just isnt for me anymore, but sitting around reading and crafting and spending your entire life practicing skills isnt what I found fun about the game. not to mention the absolute toxicity between devs and community but what can ya do. Thanks for giving the new updates a go, I definitely wanted to see if they were worth checking out yet.
Are you using the C:DDA Launcher tool? It's so good for making backups, modding, and exploring new tilesets and soundpacks. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
The default cdda fonts make me feel like clawing my eyes out. Also, please enable Font blending if you haven't, and there's a mod called Graphical Overmap(that comes with the game if you're using the launcher) that gives you a better-looking map without going full tiles. Thanks for showcasing this amazing game to more people though.
OMG, How have I not heard of this game or played it yet? This is way cooler than Dwarf Fortress! Love the tileset too. I hope it's not too hard to get the tileset and game downloaded and started
I have been trying to play this game on mobile for a while now, and it is really damn good, but theres a few menus that are near inpossible to navigate with a proper keyboard, but from what i can access, its amaxing
"zero level" or "zero floor" instead of "first floor" is a European thing, it might be that too lol. What they call "first floor" is "second floor" in USA
Keep the helmet on. Forever. Or at least until winter. Footwear is what will effect your movement number. You want the number as low as possible. The vest may be good to remove until you’re expecting to be shot or encounter very dangerous monsters. If you’re wearing combat boots try to find sneakers or tennis shoes. I like to use moccasins when I am capable, personally. For chest protection I like Kevlar vests. I find them a good balance between encumbrance and armor.
HAHA yes! I love this game but honestly after playing it for so long its a bit hard for me not to instinctively min max the game or just go take the optimal paths. Watching someone else on the otherhand means I can watch you do the same things that I got excited or got absolutely styled on by when I first started the game.
I started making absolutely awful characters and it really helped add some difficulty and depth for me. I just recently tried to make the closest thing to an "all negative traits" character that I could. Its actually sort of feasible with the new hobbies system. I took every negative hobby, so hoarder, pyromaniac, binge eating, and every addiction. Then I tried to take negative traits that would combine with the negative hobbies to make them way worse, mainly addictive personality and bad back, which make the addictions and hoarding WAY worse. Cant remember exactly what else I took but I think it had narcolepsy, pain sensitive, and some degree of slower healing. You could also take all the stats down to 4, but I haven't tried it out so it might make it absurdly difficult. I just left him with 8s.
This game looks great, and much appreciation to AA for showing it off. Anyone out there have advice on the best way to approach it? I know DF had the lazy newb pack etc, any settings I should change or mods I should get for this if I wanted to play a similar scenario to the video?
With how the more current updates are, I'd recommend lowering the monster evolution value down to 0.80 or 0.5, if you're keen to get a longer living survivor going. The action menu (enter by default) is great for doing some basic actions while you're still learning the keys. You can see some other folks have commented on encumbrance and using spears. Keeping your torso encumbrance down gives a bonus modifier to dodging, which helps while you train it with 1v1 fights.
@@billpost4205 what the HELL? 0.5 monster evolution means that enemies will evolve faster, much faster. 4 is the default, higher is slower, lower is faster.
@@LordTrashcanRulez Yeah if I gave bad advice that's on me. I was basing it off my faulty memory since I don't have my computer with me. I thought the description when you hover over evolution in the settings will tell you which way to go.
All these ascii roguelikes are easily pitched by the single sentence that “they sacrifice graphical fidelity for mechanical complexity.”
If a person is willing to learn the visual language of the game, the reward is simply a game with depth that practically nothing else can compete with.
And the modular stuff like vehicles and player gear is legitimately impressive how well it fits together.
yes
I think ''mechanical complexity'' of that game can kinda be oppresive at time, not nessasary the best compromise for the visual.Im not saying its all bad but its a very hard and quite painfull game to learn to play and enjoy.
You don't even have to sacrifice graphical fidelity that much, undead people's tileset(texture pack as the kids know them) make the game more visual.
And you can boil bandages to upgrade them. Just need a basic cooking setup.
@@JoshSweetvaledear Josh, you saved me from a untimely death
Such a good game. It's the only game my wife really supports me playing as she loves to hear about the encounters I have in it.
Guess she wasn't into your cannibal rim world colony
been rough since you got caught playing huniepop with your left hand
What's with husbands and video games that include their wives in describing their experiences?

Oh and check recycle plants. Theres a chance the drunk boxing book spawns there. I think its called Zui Quan.
@@joearnold6881 They are some of the most quiet shopping carts ever, and have amazing off-road performance. =P
I recently planned a whole night time raid just to get a grocery cart... the local store was infested with giant roaches and zombies. Had to use a gun to reliably hit the roaches... ended up bringing out the grenades.
Was worth it for the cart. xD
Your streams of this game made me get into it! It's such a fantastic game, and it's free! Been having a blast
BTW I think you will have an immense amount of success if you craft a wooden spear, it can attack from 2 spaces away so you can poke zombies, run one square out to safety, then bait them in and poke again. Currently I'm doing this and I've cleared half a small town near my evac shelter. This one small change in tools and tactics and I'm not even being hit anymore. There is a lot to learn about combat!
nooo you can't just ignore all the possible creative weapons the game offers you.
hahaha sharp spear go poke
But yes, spear weapons have a trait called "Reach Attacks" which basically allow you to make (very short) ranged attacks with the weapon.
Tried the spear kiting, works well though your crude knife spears break often. xD
I've been doing the lumberjack start with a martial art, Fior de Battalgia, focuses on blocks and knockdowns. Works with axes (no reach) and polearms (reach atk).
Might try out quarter staff memes on another character and stun lock everything to death, cudgel is pretty good for stun locking too. =P
But when the mutations are common (especially in cities) the spear reach loses some of its monopoly.
Agreed
I've come from the future with dozens of hours in CDDA to thank you for this tip.

I'd love to see more of this game. While it's not something I can play all that well, something about watching other people zen out and explore tactical turn based roguelikes is really relaxing.
hmm... same to me.

@@sathra4036 Interesting. Do gas masks and such have a pull off face action, like loosening a scarf, to help you regain stamina normally?

AA. Keep on trucking these long vods when you play the game. You are one of the better CDDA content creators. Love it
I just started this today.
"Practically anything you can think of" is really becoming the slogan for this game.

Guess your character wasn't ready to experience chewing 5 gum.
@@TioPatacas lmao

I love your Cataclysm DDA content! It made my day to see you made more!
I have never been good at the starts that have allowed evolution to progress. Zeds are just too tough
You can choose your starting location during the final page of the character creation, it gives a list of locations based on your scenario.
In general, the rule of thumb I follow is simply : "If you can do it in real life, you can more than likely do it in CDDA"
And if you excuse all the sci-fi/zombie apocalypse stuff, I've honestly yet to encounter a situation that contradicts that rule. That's gotta say something
holy shit!! I love when you do this game. please more MORE MORE!!!

XD
Cheers! Hope you're doing well out there 🖤🙏🌌
There is no moving on from RimWorld. Just withdrawal.
The best part is CDDA is free and constantly updates
XD
Always loved zombie apocalypse stuff - and this has some Lovecraftian influence too, if I heard that thing about Mi-Gos properly! I'm definitely down to check it out... reminds me of some games I used to play as a younger lad..
I've been playing this game for 3 years now. It's quickly become one of my favorites.
even though it doesn't feel modern it's definitely the best zombie game i've ever played, the depth of cdda is insane
Just a few tips:
Smashing everything in every room besides a table to craft at and crafting literally anything is better than reading to start. Take down all curtains and turn the long strings in to thread, it's a very valuable resource
The apartment building is amazing
Being overweight is a huge positive with no draw back and you should always try to be on the highest end of overweight as possible. If you get in to a bad situation, as long as you can find a drink, you an survive for days without food
I would mention armor stuff, but your character starts with great armor
This is actually really nice change from the Project Zomboid gameplay, hope this still comes back in the near future. Great story telling and very deep once you get a bit more into it
FInally, CDDA. At long last.
I managed to find a Solar powered SUV. I then installed a battery charger into it. Now boom UNLIMITED POWER. Palpatine would be proud.
Remind me of the Dwarf Fortress display.
"zero is the groundfloor -> a programmer made this game" at least in germany we dont count floor levels starting on ground level. the first floor is the one above ground level. so a building where 6 apartments are above each other has 5 floors and the ground level and below ground level are the negative levels -1, -2.
and iam pretty sure we are not the only ones doing that. so it could also be that the guy who made the game made it that way because of his cultural background.
cdda takes place in new england
Ambiguous amphibian provides for all your redundant statement needs, giving great hits such as, we're going to be engaging in weapon combat, a program programmed this, and many more...
Ngl i play this game on phone and yes its still really good , kinda weird that its completely free to play on mobile and is easy to download THEY ALSO HAVE ANDROID PORTS FOR EVERY SINGLE EXPERIMENTAL VERSION THAT COMES OUT DAILY THAT SOME HIGHASS DEDICATION and i respect em for it .
Why is this suddenly my favorite video?
The world may never know
I know this is 4 months old for me but I really enjoyed watching it. I have a friend who enjoys these types of games so I gotta tell them about it
You could get the "Graphical Overmap" mod to get something of a happy medium between an ASCII map and the new overmap tilesets. It uses symbols instead of letters that represent their tiles very well.
Just make sure to check the installation instructions, because you need to do a tiny edit in a config file.
I think it'd be pretty sweet to see you try out barotrauma too with some friends
Just wanted to say I love you AA
I fucking love this game! Rycon does great roleplays if people want more cdda content!
Please make a campaign out of it. I'll watch it all. This game has been my autism crack for the past month.
I hate those. xD
Night eye really helps with navigating dark buildings sneakily! Worst case, can grab it from mutagens if you wanna go there.
You can add sounds pack to the game. Even without music. Good alert if there are something alive or "alive". And atmo
You should try Starsector! This game reminds me of it.
Respect for the successful escape. Ive started cdda a weeks ago again but still just cant do any citystart. Even if i dont like the idea of starting as a "pro" (aka Military), its super interesting to see how other people work arount the cataclysm. Im Happy to see more from you!
What's the scenario that he's using called?
@@nnzzj Its "large Building"
I learned about the game through this video. I keep dying over and over, but I enjoy how brutally punishing the game is, if you let your guard down once early game, you're a goner
Pretty cool to see you give CDDA a try. My favorite tileset was/is the MSX++UndeadPeople tileset, although it's no longer 'officially' available due to some drama involving the creator-- but nice if you can find a copy, as it's the most complete and has good contrast. Chibi Utica is pretty decent as well -- it makes the char/zombie sprites much easier to see.
more of this please mr amphibian. Love your normal gameplays so much :)
YRS YES YES YES YES YES. I STILL HAVE YET TO LIVE ONE WEEK BUT I CANT STOP PLAYING
Many a run has been wasted by someone locking themselves in a basement for a month to grind, only to get torn apart by fully evolved monstrosities the day they step outside, because they never scavenged the equipment they would need to fight such things.
god combat medic is such an insanely good class
Mechanics similar to Dwarf Fortress with zombies? Never heard of this game but I know I'm going to invest far too much time into it
Oh hey Ultica my favorite tileset.
In my experience you don't even need to read books unless there's a specific thing you want to learn.
I expected you to get it from the pupating zombie crawler.
Are you using the C:DDA Launcher tool? It's so good for making backups, modding, and exploring new tilesets and soundpacks. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
Indeed I am :)
Real time is actually in the game settings. It also has a setting for how long it waits irl before auto turning
Press E when checking out enemies to get the full info including danger rating of the entity in question
I haven't played this in years but I remember there are Run and Sneak movement modes.
I want the old CDDA stream! WHERE’S IT AT? It was so god damn useful and entertaining, I’d rather watch it over an actual tutorial
Yeah and trading is impossible. Atleast from what I've experienced
Thanks for the vid, I had heard of the game but never seen it before.
Been waiting for you to really sink your teeth into this
This is basically every disaster happening at the same fucking time
"zero level" or "zero floor" instead of "first floor" is a European thing, it might be that too lol. What they call "first floor" is "second floor" in USA
haha love how out of all the dangerous zombies on the rooftop, the brainless was the one that didnt jump off the roof. brilliant 🤣
You can always remove the ballistic plates from the torso armour if you want to decrease its weight; they're only really necessary vs guns anyway
I kinda wanna see more of this
This game is a gem.
I just left him with 8s.
a quick note on encumberance, I believe wearing a rifle slung around your torso encumbers you quite a bit.
@@billpost4205 That's great, thanks for the tips. Games like this are so deep that even the wiki is a bit intimidating.
