My Go To build was almost always this: TRAPPING - A must have. Being able to forage for food more effectively, make snares, 'set trap' option in combat encounters, scavenging is safer, and make fire when/where ever was just invaluable. You get SO MUCH utility out of it. RANGED - Astoundingly powerful. You basically have a gun with craftable ammo in the form of the bow & arrow. (Same goes for the sling! Never underestimate the ability to surpress enemies with a hail of pebbles!) LOCKPICKING - makes looting substantially more profitable as it gives you a massive loot bonus in places like old houses or apartments. Lockpicks tend to wear out pretty fast, but you can just recraft them with the materials they deteriorate into. BOTANY(OPTIONAL) - Easy mode, IMO, as you will literally never run the risk of starving if you use this. Particularly if used in conjunction with TRAPPING. A little hungry? Stop by and scavenge a forest and have yourself a picnic of berries and mushrooms. TOUGH - Makes you less likely to die to b***s**t deaths in combat encounters(be prepared for those, It's kind of this game's version of 'Getting X-Comed') Also, you can headbutt people in combat, and who doesn't love that? :p HIDING & TRACKING (OPTIONAL) - relatively cheap and allows you to be a sneaky boi. Great for hit and run tactics where you can wound an enemy and then track them from a distance. METABOLISM (RED) - Not even really a negative trait, IMO. You need to eat and drink more often, but you heal faster. Pretty easy to offset if you're running BOTANY/TRAPPING MYOPIA (RED) - Basically free trait points as you can replace it with EAGLE EYE once you reach the city and have a chunk of change for the surgery. General advice - Make noise traps before sleeping. They will save your ass. Don't attack DMC guards unless A)You are obscenely well prepared B)feel like dying - They tend to travel in packs, can call in murder drones as back-up, and will always be hostile once you piss them off. You and Sseth is what drove me to finally fully understand and beat the entire game, and boy was it a journey. From running away in terror of dog furry to killing an extraterrestrial being out to assassinate me, i still remember the day i foolishly thought that eating raw meat and unpurified water was a good idea. Yeah it's something that just pisses you off and the only way to deal with it is to stop the video and go watch something else until your frustrations subside
I tried the demo when it first showed up years back and I was so confused but intrigued, unfortunately it was very limited in the demo, and I'm so glad someone I enjoy watching found it!
I do a lot of video watching while I'm doing other things, like gaming. That is to say, I'm not actually watching the video. Since NEO Scavenger is so text heavy, and the ambience is mostly audio, I can game while I listen. And of course having everything read by my favorite amphibian, ambiguous as it may be, is just icing.
One word: Botany If you have Botany you can move to the city and sell huge quantities of tea for fast income, like $$$$ per day. Drinking it yourself keeps the doctor away too. And as another bonus, you can treat wounds with it too, and treat bandages with it for sterilization instead of water. Just set up a camp on a water source, grab like lots of small twigs and water, and start boiling with a pan. Further bonus: You get to scavenge for berries, which is early game food and drink from forests.
Oh my god I cannot wait to play this on my steam deck I know it’s older but at least for future comment goers: when you don’t have botany and can’t tell the edibility of berries, blue are always safe, red can be both, and white are always poisonous. So risk red in dire situations I guess but otherwise just eat blue
I love how at 26:11 you start a delicious soliliquy re childhood exploration that near-immediately reverts back to task...pretty swell inflection and timing, to my ear....anyway, thanks.

Taking the laptop to the market instead of the bottle of alcohol and then just started chugging alcohol when your trying to survive. Still enjoyed it though lol. We all have to die at least 5 times before we start to make the correct survival choices
Yess! you found the other legend, second to project zomboid. I'm so glad to be watching your playthrough- shot ! Man you're making that sweet sweet content, I appreciate you.
Its sad the developers never got into their work again and released a 2nd part to the game. With that being said: Hobo Scavenger is a really great game. :) There is also a quite decent mod, which adds more traits and other stuff to the game. Have fun AP.^^
Hey Amphibious, Doesn't having both Strength+Tough Allow you to defeat the dogman with ease without injury and *Also* get the footage of it that sells for a lot and bypass a few events with it, along with getting the pelt? (I might be wrong on the "getting the pelt also with both skills" thing, tho)
Like previously mentioned, having both Strong and Melee allows you to kill it with ease, and the footage only sells for $50 so it's of much more worth to use on something like the Hatter event. The pelt can be obtained just by having the trapping skill and a sharp edge after you've killed it using whatever method you'd like.
@@Can-uj5pv ah, ok thanks, I always thought it was Strong+Tough (Because with melee builds I usually go with Strong+Tough+Melee) with a minor negative or 2
This was a really fun game. You start off not knowing why you are so cold, hungry, and thirsty all the time and getting wrecked by feral dogs. Once get the hang of how the game works then you end up killing the mega wraith and farming DMC guards for money so you can buy bionic eyes.
I actually got some advice here. Always use special attacks when available. This refers to the trapping ability and strength special ability for the current run. These abilities will always hit and sometimes stun or/and make them vulnrable. Which is a free hit by the way. Also never attack into a parry you will miss and become vulnerable 90% of the time. Instead do your own parry. With melee and athletic you have nearly 100% block chance. With neither its still like 80% ish. Dodge is a weaker parry. Combo- ed with a super secret mega OP trait you can always defend successfully in a 1v1 even against dogmen. Lastly when in a brawl(you can hit each other) try to make the enemy vulnerable before attacking. It really helps make fights one sided in your favour, especially for characters with melee.
Another thing is once they go unconscious use your fist to finish them, save your durability on your weapon, if you encounter a dog man best to run, they will jack you up, elusive is pretty easy to get, you just need to use trapping to take out the robot at zomzoms and go to Allegan get the melon heads hostile and climb up the rafters and do the just jump down options, boom you have elusive, which can easily take down the wraith to get unstoppable
I like NEOScavenger but I just stopped playing after like 20-30 hours because of the forced ironman mode. After a ten hour run, getting to the big city, grinding to get enough money for some great improvement surgeries, I'm ready to explore the south area. Within a few minutes I'm told I have stage two blue death illness or whatever it's called, and my guy dies a couple days later. It just felt like such a waste of my time. Glad to see you playing though! Maybe I'll pick it up again. edit: 59:00 You're dying of thirst because you haven't drank water in 2 days, and you can only go about 3 days without water before dying. So yeah, that's pretty accurate. You are in a state of severe dehydration that will kill you in 24 hours or less at this point.
I love this nightmare. Protip: trapping and botany makes it almost impossible to starve, and the negative metabolism trait makes you heal faster. Strong, tough, and melee combined with unstopable and a broad speer can kill multipule dogmen simultaneously without breaking a sweat...even when injured, weary, and thirsty.

"Has anyone ever played a morally correct version of NEO Scavenger?" he asked as I left a tip at the dinner after my meal
Falling down two ravines in a row is just legendary rng
One word: Botany
If you have Botany you can move to the city and sell huge
quantities of tea for fast income, like $$$$ per day.
Drinking it yourself keeps the doctor away too.
And as another bonus, you can treat wounds with it too,
and treat bandages with it for sterilization instead of water.
Just set up a camp on a water source, grab like lots of small
twigs and water, and start boiling with a pan.
Further bonus: You get to scavenge for berries,
which is early game food and drink from forests.
Oh my god I cannot wait to play this on my steam deck
I know it’s older but at least for future comment goers: when you don’t have botany and can’t tell the edibility of berries, blue are always safe, red can be both, and white are always poisonous. So risk red in dire situations I guess but otherwise just eat blue
Fucking love NeoScavanger and got called out immediately "Very Esoteric for the people who like it"
I used to love this game, played it WAY back. Nice to see someone playing it in 2021.
I love how at 26:11 you start a delicious soliliquy re childhood exploration that near-immediately reverts back to task...pretty swell inflection and timing, to my ear....anyway, thanks.
Has trapping and is starving but only ever builds a squirrel snare on accident *internal screaming intensifies*
As someone with 350h plus it’s hurting my soul seeing you just attack you need to use the trip headbutt plus obscure path for free stunneds while smashing there heads in you got extremely lucky gg tho love your shit
"Nah, ez game...
huh, good thing didn't die of hypothermia"
Holy shit I’ve played this game for years and ALWAYS thought it was a niche game IM SO HAPPY YOUR PLAYING IT!!!
HELL YES, the very beginning always reminds me of 28 days later because hospital gown, and plastic bags
Got strong Sopranos vibes from the part where you were stranded in a wasteland eating individual packets of condiments and freezing
WOOOOOOOOO!!!!! GET HYPED FOR INVENTORY MANAGEMENT!!!
I’ve been looking for this game after seeing this video when it came out!
“If you listen closely you can hear the woods”
*stops chewing immediately so I can hear*
I really enjoyed watching you play this game. Keep the content coming dude!
i love your videos! they really do help me calm down. I've been having a hard time at work lately and you help me out a lot. thanks!
When healthcare in future dystopia Detroit is more affordable than actual Detroit..
This vid instantly added NEO Scavenger to my library. Thanks man
I loved this game, honestly one of the best.
"i missed a man who was literally stunned" lmao
love a good old fashioned homeless glass fight over hopefully anything
Its sad the developers never got into their work again and released a 2nd part to the game.
With that being said: Hobo Scavenger is a really great game. :) There is also a quite decent mod, which adds more traits and other stuff to the game.
Have fun AP.^^
Hey Amphibious, Doesn't having both Strength+Tough Allow you to defeat the dogman with ease without injury and *Also* get the footage of it that sells for a lot and bypass a few events with it, along with getting the pelt? (I might be wrong on the "getting the pelt also with both skills" thing, tho)
No, it is Strong + Melee.
@@Can-uj5pv ah, ok thanks, I always thought it was Strong+Tough
(Because with melee builds I usually go with Strong+Tough+Melee) with a minor negative or 2
Does anyone else feel like every time he plays a new game he says "One of the most requested games on my channel."
Not complaining, just amusing. d:
That Whiskey was like 200 dollars and he just straight downed half the bottle lmao
Alternate title: "An ode to plastic bags and the consequences of my own actions"
2 hours, 49 minutes and 29 seconds of pure joy
This game has one of the best soundtracks ever
“Don’t be alarmed, it’s dog meat”😂😂
Literally bought the game because of this video. It's so much fun. Gotta love botany though for that free food
This was a really fun game. You start off not knowing why you are so cold, hungry, and thirsty all the time and getting wrecked by feral dogs. Once get the hang of how the game works then you end up killing the mega wraith and farming DMC guards for money so you can buy bionic eyes.
Don't you get kicked out of dmc if you kill the guards?
"ah crap, I just turned my crowbar into a squirrel trap"
I remember getting a shopping cart and gun in like 2 minutes from sheer luck, THAN my game glitching out and accidentally eating red berries 10/10...
Being a veteran NeoScav player, this was a little hard to watch but still enjoyable!
I noticed he wasn't using headbutt, traps, etc. in combat even when his weapons fell apart.
Semi-textbased apocalypse hobo simulator. Cool.
"You don't just run up to a stranger with your wang." Words to live by.
Love your style narrating NEO Scavenger
scrambling around for food two tiles from a forest was painful
This made the inner-most curves of my brain smoothen as I remembered playing this or something that was very like this as a whee lad
I had the worst week trying to find this video so I could find the game thought he deleted the vid but now I see this is a vod channel
Was wondering when you'd get around to this nightmare
I love this nightmare.
Protip: trapping and botany makes it almost impossible to starve, and the negative metabolism trait makes you heal faster.
Strong, tough, and melee combined with unstopable and a broad speer can kill multipule dogmen simultaneously without breaking a sweat...even when injured, weary, and thirsty.
I like how you cant put water in a can but you can boil water in a can
I think it's because it has no lid
