Its my favourite episode, Bishop Brennan running into the house with his cape flying yelling 'Crilllyyyy!' still has me in stiches whenever I watch it.
There are a couple of episodes of Father Ted that are owned by an Australian company instead of Channel 4, and unfortunately they don't allow reactions to those episodes on UA-cam. I think "The Mainland" is one of those episodes.
Trouble is they're not gonna have a clue about richard wilson/victor meldrew and the whole "I don't believe it" thing is gonna go over the boomers' heads. It's kinda weird referring to them as boomers when I'm older but that's the name he chose so I guess I'll roll with it
The title of this episode is a play on the early 80s WW2 film _Escape to Victory_ about allied prisoners (including Pele, Ossie Ardiles, Bobby Moore, Mike Summerbee... plus Sly Stallone and Michael Caine) playing a football match against Germans. No, I am not making this up. It really is an actual film.
The "someone" he has to kick up the arse is the Bishop who forced them to protest at the cinema in the first series and who was in the plague of rabbits episode.
A little fact about Dick Byrne and Cyril, the actors auditioned to be Ted and Dougal, but the writers of the show loved their auditions so much they created characters for them in the show.
The referee is Jason Byrne, a stand-up comedian. He's absolutely unhinged on stage, very unpredictable, improvises about 90% of his set. Check out him performing "magic" at the Melbourne Comedy Festival in 2010. It's so utterly ridiculous, but it's his short fuse and mental meltdown over the audience members that make him so great.
I liked the way Queen Boomer worked out that Ted would cheat using the wheelchair, but missed what he was using the fake hands for 😂 I recon she'd been on the dreamy sleepy nighty snoozy snooze! I also liked that the champagne Cork joke made you fall off your chair! That one has always got me too 😁
Queen Boomer has half-baby brain 😂 She worked out the remote-controlled wheelchair but then completely forgot that the fake hands had to control it. 🤣 I've been waiting for this episode as it's one of my all-time favorites. Especially with part 2.
🎉Big Congratulations to you both🎉 You're a beautiful couple and will make a fantastic happy family. Keep up the love and laughs, and many thanks for sharing. X
Kicking Bishop Brennan up the arse is a superb episode. Best to put the dog in another room. There is a danger you might laugh so hard, your dog might think you are having a heart attack. This is maybe my second favourite after Father Ted's Speed 3 and Douglas's comment "they were all in the nip (nude)".
I've always loved how, despite never being afraid of Bishop Brennan himself, even Father Jack was shocked out of sleep when the forfeit was announced 😂😂
Just for people to understand, Dermot Morgan who played Father Ted was very unwell during the filming of the final four episodes of this last season. He was complaining of having chest pains during this episode. Ardal O'Hanlon's father is a doctor, who came to see a recording and told his son (who played Dougal) that he thought Dermot looked terrible and needed to get medical help soon. That didn't happen, and the day after the taped the final episode, Dermot collapsed of a massive heart attack and died aged just 45.
It was during the final episode that he had chest pains. When filming the Shaft scene, Tommy Tiernan as Father Kevin repeatedly flubbed his lines, forcing Dermot to do the dance over and over again, causing him chest pains by the end of the scene.
@@jackcarter5101 Yes, I told that story before. However Dermot's health was cause of concern for Ardal, whose own father is a doctor, Dr Rory O'Hanlon, who knew Dermot looked very unwell and advised he should get medical treatment as soon as possible, which didn't happen.
@@johnking5174 Frank Kelly also recalled Dermot was only just passed fit to make the final series. He was on blood pressure tablets 'that would have knocked a horse out'.
@@jackcarter5101 He was in no fit state to make the last season. I don't understand how he became so unwell so quickly. When you watch the last season, he looks noticeably different in the face and eyes. His energy has changed. Remember season two was recorded in early 1996, and so fast forward just two years into early 1998 and Dermot's health has fallen badly.
On your first Father Ted reaction a spontaneous list of things Father Jack has said broke out. My contribution was "More water", needless to say I have been waiting for this episode.
This episode contains my favourite joke from probably the whole of Father Ted. When Dougal says 'the Italians know about football alright. And the world of Fashion. God, Ted, you remember that fellow who was so good at Fashion they had to shoot him?' 🤣
@@hannibalsmyth6779 No. It's a reference to fashion designer, Gianni Versace, who died when he was shot in the head outside his home (by a random spree killer, according to Wikipedia), so the joke is about Dougal putting the wrong spin on the reason for the guy's death.
A lot of the external filming on Father Ted was filmed on two small islands, just off the coast of Ireland. The problem is that the residents of neither can decide which is the official Craggy Island. So every year they play each other in a football match. The winner is Craggy Island for the year, and the loser is Rugged Island...
Great to see you have enjoyed the funny and ridiculous "father Ted" it was a memorable and popular show, fun to watch it again with you two again, nice to see comedy appreciated in America and Florida ✌️♥️🇬🇧
@@ajorngjdonaydbr This method of cheating is not unfamiliar in your part of the world then? As the man in the orthopedic shoes said - I stand corrected..

I can see your not the type to share too much of your personal life KB and quite right that’s not what this is about but I genuinely wish you both all the joy and happiness in the world . So happy your both into Father Ted it’s part of our shared Anglo Irish cultural heritage and an all time classic , highlighted by this hilarious episode . 👍🏴
I've thought for some time that QB's involvement is essential. I know it's your channel, KB, and well done for that because it's great (easily one of my favs'), but you can't really not include her now. Not just because she's great of and in herself, but also the interaction between the two of you is a joy. x
It's so funny when you see who played Fr Jack such a refined gentleman.. The best comedy to come from our shores bar none.. This came out when the church was in such trouble and it was the first time we young and old openly mocked and laughed at the church.. The next episode Bishop Brennan gets kicked up the arse is very funny.. Glad ur enjoying it Dougal was brilliant 👍☘

Thc close-ups when the Italian was preparing to take the penalty kick were a parody of a scene from the 1981 war film Escape To Victory, directed by John Huston and starring Sylvester Stallone, Michael Caine and several well-known footballers of the time including the great Pele.
