- Welcome to our first-time watching as we react to "Airplane!" (1980). Directed by Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker, this film is a parody of the disaster film genre, particularly the style of the 1970s. I suggested BIKER BOYZ I know you'll get to it when you get to it I'm not impatient I understand that you'll probably have a list of movie's to get through but BIKER BOYZ is great with laurence fishburne as smoke the king of Cali based on a real person it's a black biker movie but I just wanted to add TORQUE it's like FAST AND THE FURIOUS but with motorbikes directed by Joseph Kahn famous for music videos he won a grammy for Eminem without me and Taylor swift bad blood he's worked with everybody from Britney spears to snoop dog it also stars ICE CUBE both movies have become cult classics I don't think anyone has reacted to them yet
it was great! love that movie! now you gotta watch "Airplane 2: The Sequel" which includes Wiliam Shatner (Captain Kirk from Star Trek: The original Series), and then Naked Gun, Naked Gun 2 1/2, Naked Gun 33 1/3.... 🙂
It’s not that he couldn’t drink from a cup, he had a “ drinking problem “ 🤭. Naked Gun is the next obvious choice for an old hilarious comedy 👍

NOBODY in 1980 would have called Ted Striker a "stalker". He would have been admired for facing his fears to show the woman how much he loves her.
This "stalker" interpretation wouldn't have existed before about 2012.
I agree, Ted's not a stalker. He's a guy trying to talk to the woman who left him just hours before, by leaving a note at the house they shared.
Specifcally, stalking wasn't a thing until actress Rebecca Shaeffer was murdered by a fan in 1989. That tragic event kicked off the use of restraining orders. Up until then, police were unable to do anything about a person invading your privacy until they actually did something. Now the potential for harm is enough to get a restraining order.
Too bad it took a woman being murdered to get police to take it seriously.

@@jtoland2333Stalking been around for centuries, decades but got bigger in the 80s. But I agree on him a stalker these Millennials and Gen Z shouldn't use words that shouldn't be used.
in 2024, anyone who calls more than once in a day is considered a stalker. But 40-50 years ago, this whole storyline with Ted chasing Elaine was considered a romantic gesture. I can only assume that in the 70s, it was not necessarily the case that 90% of men were violent predators, the way we are now, or so I'm meant to understand.
This young lady is one of very few people who have reacted to this movie who understood the “altogether“ joke.
I'm done with this couples reactions. The simple fact they could not let go of Ted being a "stalker" was just too much. And they thought he was obsessive

I seen this movie in the theater when I was 16,neither me or my girlfriend knew who this Ethel Merman was,I looked it up later but they used somebody who was mayb famous in the 50s and expected a audience of mayb average age about mayb 28 to know who this dinosaur was,that was one joke that didn’t work

Ethel Merman ( the woman in the hospital bed, who started singing) was a famous Broadway singer and actor who was known for her bold voice and exaggerated style.
The woman who helped translate the “jive talk” was the Mom from the tv show Leave It To Beaver, from the late 1950’s/early 60’s which focused on the family being sweet, clean, with the perfect stay-at-home Mom living in the suburbs.

What drives me nuts are the reactions where they talk over dialogue, in this case jokes.
Notice every time they drag someone down the aisle,, someone gets on the PA system to speak and everyone on a plane looks up when a voice comes over the PA
The guy playing the Japanese soldier(who commits hari kari) is James Hong. He is one of Hollywood's longest lasting actors. He even made a movie appearance this year at the age of 95.

Why would you think that George Zip was anybody's dad, when he died in a raid led by Ted.
Ted suffers all of his confidence loss because he blames himself for the death of those 7 pilots.

Some obscure items. I speak Jive lady. The mother on a popular sitcom called 'Leave it to Beaver' & was a proper housewife & mother in white America. The sickness the egg lady had was: 'The Bird Flu' an illness around at the time. The sound of the plane is from a prop plane, not a jet. Makeup lady is the writer's mother. The horse in bed is a reference to 'The Godfather'. Pilot & Co-Pilot are not allowed to eat the same meal. (For this very reason.) The passenger in the cab is a Ca. politician well known for cutting waste of money. Boy's Life was a real magazine, Nun's Life was not. & The airport voices are the real people that do the voices at airports.
And the real LAX airport voices were really man and wife.
Dont watch monty python you would never understand.

15:52 Okay here is one of those jokes you might not get- There was a commercial for "Yuban Coffee" in the 70s and the famous line was "Jim never has a second cup of coffee at home."
For this "Jim never... at home" gag throughout the film they actually used the same actress from the television commercial. We got the joke instantly back then.

Yes, a lot of people miss that and it is something that is lost on many people and will forever be lost AJ knew who Kareem was and JJ. If ur really into sports people may recognize or be familiar with him, he also knew “JJ from Good Times”. Classic tv shows and movies are still available for people to know who a lot of those actors are like Leslie Nielsen, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Barbara Billingsley etc but a lot of references will be gone forever
Fun Fact: The producers were unaware that it was the same actress.
That commercial played on the common theme of the insecure housewife who was threatened by someone else's coffee (or whatever) being better than hers. Thus the consumers flock to the "better" product.
The wife thinking about her husband's 2nd cup of coffee is a parody of a Yuban Coffee commercial.

Ted has a "drinking problem" - that is, a problem literally drinking - anything. That's the joke. At 44 years old, this film makes a lot of references that don't land so effectively in 2024. For example, the George Zipp story refers to a plot line from a 1940 movie with a character named George Gipp. Not to mention just some of the other passe references like smoking on planes, Hare Krishnas in airports, coffee commercials, war movies, rear-screen projection and Ethel Merman.

“Win one for the Zipper” ( George Zipp) is a joke on the famous line about “win one for the Gipper” from the film about real-life athlete and coach Knute Rockne. In the movie George Gipp is played by Ronald Reagan who was running for president when this film was released. The line “win one for the Gipper” was used constantly in the campaign.
In response to what she said at the very end, pretty literally this movie took everything from a movie called Zero Hour! Zero Hour! The general plot is the same and many lines are identical, word for word. They just figured out how to make that serious movie funny.
It was genius how they did it. It's almost the same movie.

My aunt and uncle were Baptist "airport missionaries" who did exactly this while passing out leaflets about religion at 2 local airports.
I still remember in the 70’s it seemed like every other corner in the city were the Hare Krishna people were handing out pamphlets. They were annoying at times but harmless.🍻
The folks asking for money at the airport are supposed to stand in for the “Hare Krishna” who became such a nuisance for travelers that they were banned in many places.
You either missed or didn't show your reaction to a LOT of the jokes. For example, after the girl accepted the coffee she said won't you sit down? After he did he asked her if she wanted cream. There are a number of films from the Zucker btothers, I beliive this is the first and one of the best. Before this Leslie Nielson was known as a serious actor, as were a number of others, after his he went into comedy, doing the 'Naked Gun' trilogy who were police film parodies, he also guest starred in TV show 'Due South as a comedic character.
That "vicious" dog was a Golden Retriever - the least vicious dog ever.
Actually, ZAZ made Kentucky Fried Movie before this. And that one is even MORE outrageous! Must see Enter the Dragon first, though, or you won't get half of it.

5:00 Incredibly, Jimmy Walker's previous film appearance was in the atrocious _The Concorde--Airport '79,_ which would have finished off the '70s disaster movie genre even if _Airplane!_ hadn't come along to mock its corpse. (Walker plays a saxophonist who keeps getting high. It's not really a "role" and is completely irrelevant to the plot.) While _Airplane!_ mocks a lot of disaster movie tropes from that era (the nun with a guitar and the girl heading for a transplant are copped straight out of _Airport 1975_ and slapping the hysterical passenger was a regular "joke" in the _Airport_ franchise) the plot, a lot of the dialog and even characters' names are lifted straight out of 1957's _Zero Hour!,_ which helps explain why a guy in his 30s is having WWII flashbacks in 1980.
Ya'll are young so it's expected not to get some of the joke references like the old white lady who speaks *"JIVE"* played the straight laced conservative mother on the show *(Leave it to Beaver)*

The white suit that Ted wears when he meets Elaine is like John Travolta’s suit in “Saturday Night Fever.” And the disco music and disco ball also refer to that.
And it was a Navy dress uniform, while he was in the Air Force.

The actor who says "that's just what they'll expect us to do" was the star of THE UNTOUCHABLES, a TV series. It was one of the things his character, Eliot Ness, frequently said.
So good to see JJ again... a must watch growing up here in Australia... still haven't got over the father's death.
I'm genuinely shocked at how much stuff the guy got wrong and how many jokes they not only didn't get, but didn't even realize it WAS a joke. I'd hate to see them try to react to a movie with any actual complexity.

If you're Breaking Bad fans, notice Jonathan Banks (Mike Ehrmantraut) at the radio... he has a couple of lines, but one of the clearest is probably "about 2 more minutes, chief!" and "he's all over the place! What an asshole!"

During my wedding reception dance, when the DJ happened to play "staying Alive", without any planning or prior coordination, I tossed my jacket to my wife who was taking a breather on the sideline. Not missing a beat, she took the cue and tossed it right back -- thus recreating the scene from Airplane.
the woman with the inner monologue is the exact same actress who said that same line, Jim never has a second cup of coffee at home, from our coffee commercials in those years. so the second inner monologue about Jim never vomits at home would have been ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS to the audience at the time

Trivia:
- the language the black dudes were using is called "Jive" it was the predecessor to ebonics. it was popular in the 70s and early 80s.. the old lady that was trying to help them when they were sick was Barbara Billingsley, better known as June Cleaver, the mother on the original Leave It To Beaver in the 50s.
- The disco scene was a direct rip off of the scene from "Saturday Night Fever" with John Travolta .. complete with the white suit lol.
- Kids going to the cockpit was a real thing until 9/11. I went up to the cockpit on my first flight when i was 8. They usually had little artificial wing pins to give you to feel special too.
- in the psych ward, that really was the REAL Ethel Merman (broadway singer/actress) that he claimed the other person thought they were.
- "Never has a second coffee at home" - tagline for a coffee commercial - "Yuban Coffee" which was popular in the 70s.
- The nun with the guitar was a reference to a singing nun who was a real person.
- The lady who sang to the sick girl (Jill Whalen - "vicki" on the Love Boat) was Lorna Patterson.
- On real airline flights, food poisoning in the cockpit is extremely unlikely. They get different dinner menus than the passengers and neither the captain nor first officer can choose the same dinner. This is to ensure something like what happens in the movie never happens in real life. Someone will always be able to fly the plane.
- Croskey is played by the legendary Lloyd Bridges.. father of Jeff and Beau Bridges.
- Cramer is played by Robert Stack also known as the host of Unsolved Mysteries.
- Yes, religious people would frequent the airports for donations.
- Striker keeps missing his mouth because he has a "drinking problem".. get it now? lol
- "win one for the Zipper" was a play on words of a comment President Reagan made - "win one for the Gipper".

This is a classic and I hope you enjoyed it. You said because of when the film came out that you would miss a lot of references and you did. That's okay y'all still got the just. One thing I would like to point out is the old woman who knew Jive. She is Barbara Billingsly, who was the mother in the hit show Leave it to Beaver. Also, the woman in the hospital that was singing is Ethel Merman, She was a huge Broadway and film star and that was one of her staple songs.

The Doctor's "Zipper" story is based on "Gipper" story of real life Notre Dame football player George Gipp........ "Win One for the Gipper" was a movie line by Ronald Reagan, acting as Gipp in movie *_Knute Rockne - All American_* ... *THE REAL GEORGE GIPP DIED AT AGE 25, JUST LAST GAME OF HIS SR. YEAR, from Strep & Pneumonia (no antibiotics invented yet).* .. "Win one for the Gipper" is based on supposed hospital deathbed talk Gipp had with Rockne just before Gipp died. Rockne later used as a motivational coaches speech during the 1928 Notre Dame vs Army football game.

This film succeeds by having the character play it straight and placing the jokes in the background.
This film parodies so many famous disaster films and war films. The list is amazing:
"Towering Inferno ", "Airport", "The Poseiden Adventure, " "From Here to Eternity. In the 70s, there were many "movies of the week" made for broadcast TV, and the themes covered everything from medical dramas to detective thrillers. There are also numerous cultural references from the 60's and 70's. The coffee scene with the husband and wife is a parody of a 1960's Yuban Coffee commercial. It is available to view on UA-cam.
The song the nun was playing on the guitar with the refrain” Sock it to me…” was one of the main songs from the tv show ‘Laugh In’ (from 1968-73) which featured crazy skits, nonsense humor, silly musical bits and broke a lot of barriers for comedy in tv.😊
The song she was singing was R.E.S.P.E.C.T. by Aretha Franklin. Laugh-In was famous for "sock it to me" that line delivered by comedienne Judy Carne.

Slapstick comedy is physical comedy. There is some, but most of this is verbal comedy.
You cut out some great lines! Capt. Oveur- "Give me ham on five, hold the Mayo." Like give me Ham on rye, hold the mayo. And many others. Plus ever exterior shot of the JET in flight has PROPELLER sounds. HA!
Oddly enough, they missed a good bet with this gag - since Captain Oveur was using the _white_ courtesy phone, the line could just as well have been "Get me Hamm on *white,* hold the Mayo!" 😄
Kentucky Fried Movie is another movie by the Zucker Brothers.

Fun fact at about 8:15 the engine sound was a C130's prop type. Live under Yeager's flight path and I have heard the squadron's flights over 40 years and nothing sounds the same.

15:55 No, this was a parody of a commercial on TV all the time where a restaurant switched the brand of coffee they used, and "Jim" liked that brand better than the other brand, so the woman switches brands at home.
The woman is even the woman from that commercial.

Love how you don't skip massive amounts of parts in the movie 😊..the air Israel was just a form of flattery to kind of show the way the orthodox dress . I was laughing with your reactions and it looked liked you both found it really funny and genuinely apprecaited the humour. This movie was literally the biggest thing when i was a small kid i remember seeing the automatic pilot and everything just "bigger " obviously not understanding a lot of the humour as a small child. Its a classic !:)

Good reaction you two. Regarding the smoking, yes, you could smoke on airplanes back then, you could also smoke in restaurants and hospitals, it was a crazy time. You're one of the few people that recognized Jimmie Walker, I watched Good Times regularly back in the 70's, so seeing him, although brief, was still great.
Some of the jokes are dated though, such as the husband wanting a second cup of coffee, then the wife questions it. That was a 70's Yuban commercial that they borrowed that from. Movie still holds up though and some of the one-liners are still used to this day. Edit: This is one of those movies that you need to watch a few times to get all the jokes, but you got quite a few of them, which is great.

Fun fact on The Saturday Night Fever dance scene spoof: While he was doing Airplane!, actor Robert Hays (Ted Striker) was also doing a short lived sitcom called Angie and his Angie Co-Star Donna Pescow was in Saturday Night Fever.
There is a sequel to Airplane called Airplane 2: The Sequel which is also worth a look just to see William Shatner steal the show.
There used to be a lot of solicitations from religious groups in the airports back then. That is why they have the different religious people approach the passengers.
