The Tutorial was nice for connecting a Keyboard to just play instruments. I would like a future video on how to set up a MIDI controller so that I can use Transport buttons, MIDI CC to control VST parameters, as well as MIDI Shortcut Key setup so that we can use our controllers to perform basic actions in Cakewalk! I would agree with your request. I have been trying to set up a Korg nanoKontrol2 for weeks now and have it all set up correctly but it will not send the CC data to Cakewalk. Any information you have would be helpful!
Hey ATTV. Thanks man. My son, and I built a device to measure electrical activity in plants and convert them to midi with an arduino. Since the project we were using as a jumping off place is quite old and without more modern software. SO I found Bome Midi pro for free and Cakewalk worked well to be able to listen to plant speak...so to speak. It took me forever to figure out what was happening. It was summed up in 10 seconds of your video. Again, thanks. He is a happy 10 year old now.
this was... an amazing tutorial --- i've been trying/wanting to use my Privia PX-130 as a midi keyboard for so long and have been using CakeWalk DAW for so long... never dawned on me to use both together HAHA!
0:37 Yes, it has to be plugged in before you open Cakewalk, not plugged in while it's open because if you do that, Cakewalk won't see the device. But if you plug it in while Cakewalk's open then close and re-open Cakewalk, it will then see the device.

And I just learned that Cakewalk lets you use your computer keyboard in a similar way to a midi keyboard. Just insert an instrument as in the video and then, from the pull-down menu: Views | Virtual Controllers | Computer Keyboard. If you don't have a midi keyboard, this is a nice way to try out the same type of control without having to spend any money.
And, as I figured out, if you have no external interface, you have to use the keyboard controller, or your midi will be heard, but not recorded. Your post finally solved my problem. Thanks.

Brilliant thanks. Helped me get my keyboard connected. However, now the problemI have is that I have delay between when I play the note on the controller and when I hear the sample in my headphones.
I have the same problem! I read it depends if you're using an ASIO device or somthing. You have to modify the parameters in edit, driver settings ... but mine cannot be modified for some reason :(
@@mario241190 It's called "latency" and it is the delay between when you hit the note and when it actually makes it to the speakers through the computer. You can search for videos on it and most of the time it is related to the type of interface you have.

Zane, great stuff. I used this tutorial to set up my Akai MPK mini. I'm always amazed when things work, and it did. I noticed the sample library on the left column of the strings "window". Have you produced a video where one can access those samples via midi pads? It would be awesome to tap out those samples into cakewalk. (you can tell I'm a total newb at this)
I just ordered an M - Audio Oxygen 61 MKV for use with the current ver of Cakewalk. If there's been any issues with this combination (including using the ACT), a heads up would be appreciated Not a actually a noob though. My years past setup was a Roland D -70 with Cakewalk 2002. Hi, thanks good video, would this same process work if I dragged and dropped Kontakt 7 from un- categorised? Or do I still need to open the cakewalk plugins/virtual instruments first, and can there be more than one of the vsts etc all together on one track if I wanted to record a grand piano with the addition of the Etheral Earth for a synchronised to my key touch essentially laying the foundation very quickly and then working on the final touches to the midi commands like velocity, sustain etc. Just looking for ways to make the whole process efficient in time and still get great results.
For people who have trouble like me making it work, check if your computer try to use your screen (monitor) as a sound device. You may have a monitor with speaker that is being used AND your actual speaker//midi output device. In this case, a conflict may happen and you end up having no sound in Cakewalk//Sonic//etc... if that happen to you i suggest to do the following; 1-Go into Control Panel in Windows 2- Select HARDWARE AND SOUND 3- Under SOUND, select MANAGE AUDIO DEVICES 4- you should be able to see your monitor name used as a sound device; DISABLE IT!!! You should now be able to hear a youtube video AND your midi device as you play it AT THE SAME TIME!!! since it will use both output (your speaker) as the only audio device. if you want to re-enable your monitor as an audio device, use same step but ENABLE IT. Once on your desktop, just check on the bottom right and re-select your monitor name as the Device you want to use for sound. Hope this help.
Is it possible to zoom the piano roll more in order to be able to edit shorter notes? Mine show up as like 2 px lines, impossible to control... EDIT: Found it. Using the +- looking glasses was very limited. Alt+Scroll however opened up a deeper level of zoom

Do you possibly have another program open that could be accessing your midi data? Like a standalone instrument or maybe another daw? Apparently this error can happen if there’s something else that has access to your midi.
What kind of plugin are you trying to drag in? (instrument or effect?) Where exactly are you trying to drag it? And what outcome are you expecting when you drag it? If you're dragging an instrument over into an empty space in the track area, it should create a new instrument track with that instrument on it. If you are dragging an effect over you need to drag it into the FX section of an existing track. You can't drag an effect into the track area and create a new track from that.

I plug my midi controller into my computer. If you have a midi controller that has actual midi ports on it and your audio interface has midi ports, you can use that too. Just enable the interfaces midi i/o in the midi settings of cakewalk.
Great Video.. Question. I'm getting a Hissing feedback through my mic. How do i get rid oif that? When i'm doing vocals. it's still having the hissing loud sound.
There are so many possibilities for that. This is a video about midi so if you’re trying to do something with midi and your mic maybe that’s the issue. All I can say is make sure you’re using a proper xlr mic cable, your interface has enough clean gain for that specific mic, your interface and/or mic aren’t near anything that could be causing interference, your microphone is faulty, your cable isn’t faulty, you don’t have speakers turned on with the mic on and going through them. There are so many possibilities.
The free version of cakewalk doesn’t have the plug-ins like piano, I tried to download one and it works as a standalone program but I don’t think it has the VST capability as I’ve tried to add the path into the manager and it won’t show. Are there any free plugins I can use to get started? I’m interested in making my midi controller like a piano and also drums, I have modo drums vst but the keyboard plays notes not beats when it’s opened as a plug-in, modo as a stand-alone lets me play drums on the midi. I just need to learn these little basics then I’ll be rolling 😎
I set up my Akai MPK mini to Cakewalk, but it won't allow me to select "Master" as an output option, so it only makes traditional piano or drum sounds from the keyboard/pad, but not any of the synth or string sounds. Any ideas?

I am learning so much from your tutorials. I purchased the keystation in your tutorial and plugged it into my computer. I followed the steps as in the video, but when I pull up the interface and start recording using the keystation, I will hear it for couple seconds and then it stops playing. There's no sound coming from the keystation keyboard. I go back to preferences and the keyboard is still checked. Do you know what the issue is and how to fix this?
Have you tried different instrument plugins to make sure it’s not just an issue with the plugin. Also can you get other sounds to work? Like if you were to record audio in or drag a piece of audio in, does that playback ok? Just to make sure it’s not an issue with your audio interface setup.

Any other sounds using the M-audio keyboard do the same thing. The keyboard stops working after a few seconds. I'm not familiar with audio interface setup. I am just beginning, really!
Hi Zane, Great and easy video. I have a problem never experienced before: using a Samsopn Graphite 49 or a M-Audio ProKeys Sono 88 with Cakewalk with a PC-workstation with Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1230 V2 @ 3.30GHz 3.30 GHz (4 core-8 threads) with 24GB RAM Tascam US-16x08 when I play a VST Instrument (independently of this being a Cakewalk-plugin or a standalone instrument, also doesn't matter if playing through the US16x08 or through the Graphite driver) besides the generated notes their comes some noise as irregular transients or kind of feedback noise. Despite of having this hughe memory I set the sampling rate to 2048, trying to remediate. Couldn't solve this issue. Maybe you have an idea of how to get rid of the problem??? Much would appreciate your input. Cheers Edgar

I don't seem to be able to access instrument-specific settings and my interface basically looks like a characature of what you have. Is this because I don't have a paid membership or is there some way toi heavily alter the appearance that I just haven't found yet? Thanks dude!
Did you download “Cakewalk by Bandlab”? Or “Cakewalk Next”? Or are you using just “Bandlab”? I’m using Cakewalk by Bandlab. It hasn’t changed its look in years. Even the updated Cakewalk Sonar looks the same so I have a feeling that you’re just using the Bandlab DAW.
Hi there, any troubleshooting tips for having 2 dead keys on my midi controller in cakewalk? The keys work in other daws and also when I press the change octaves button on my keyboard. It’s just 2 notes
question: just got my first midi device and all i get out of cakewalk is buzzing, no matter the instrument. The tone of the buzzing depends on the key I press, but it is still not the instrument I have selected. Any help would be appreciated
I know the Juno has midi in and out on it so you could definitely use that with Cakewalk. You would need an interface that allows you to connect midi in and out. Some of the Arturia Minifuse interfaces have it one them or you can find a midi specific interface if you want. I’m not sure if your Juno has a USB connection on it that can be used as a midi keyboard. If it does then you won’t need the interface just connect by midi and set it up in cakewalk. To get the sounds of the Juno into Cakewalk you will need an audio interface and you can connect the line out of the Juno to the line inputs of an audio interface.

If your midi controller isn't doing anything, try hitting the midi input echo button next to the track arm button.

my keyboard is checked off on inputs and shows up fine and everything but when i opened it up to the piano thing there was no sound whatsoever

if that happen to you i suggest to do the following;
1-Go into Control Panel in Windows
2- Select HARDWARE AND SOUND
3- Under SOUND, select MANAGE AUDIO DEVICES
4- you should be able to see your monitor name used as a sound device; DISABLE IT!!! You should now be able to hear a youtube video AND your midi device as you play it AT THE SAME TIME!!! since it will use both output (your speaker) as the only audio device.
if you want to re-enable your monitor as an audio device, use same step but ENABLE IT. Once on your desktop, just check on the bottom right and re-select your monitor name as the Device you want to use for sound.

Is it possible to zoom the piano roll more in order to be able to edit shorter notes? Mine show up as like 2 px lines, impossible to control... EDIT: Found it. Using the +- looking glasses was very limited. Alt+Scroll however opened up a deeper level of zoom
This a great review, so I am just curious does the number on the Keystation Mini 32 mean anything, for example when I set up my cakewalk , it asks me for 64 bit or 32 bit, will this Keystation Mini 32, work on my 64 bit setup or this number not correlate with any of that ?
The 32 number on the keystation is for the number of keys. It will work fine with 64 bit computers and programs.

Do you possibly have another program open that could be accessing your midi data? Like a standalone instrument or maybe another daw? Apparently this error can happen if there’s something else that has access to your midi.

What kind of plugin are you trying to drag in? (instrument or effect?) Where exactly are you trying to drag it? And what outcome are you expecting when you drag it?
If you're dragging an instrument over into an empty space in the track area, it should create a new instrument track with that instrument on it. If you are dragging an effect over you need to drag it into the FX section of an existing track. You can't drag an effect into the track area and create a new track from that.

I plug my midi controller into my computer. If you have a midi controller that has actual midi ports on it and your audio interface has midi ports, you can use that too. Just enable the interfaces midi i/o in the midi settings of cakewalk.

There are so many possibilities for that. This is a video about midi so if you’re trying to do something with midi and your mic maybe that’s the issue.
All I can say is make sure you’re using a proper xlr mic cable, your interface has enough clean gain for that specific mic, your interface and/or mic aren’t near anything that could be causing interference, your microphone is faulty, your cable isn’t faulty, you don’t have speakers turned on with the mic on and going through them.
There are so many possibilities.
The free version of cakewalk doesn’t have the plug-ins like piano, I tried to download one and it works as a standalone program but I don’t think it has the VST capability as I’ve tried to add the path into the manager and it won’t show. Are there any free plugins I can use to get started? I’m interested in making my midi controller like a piano and also drums, I have modo drums vst but the keyboard plays notes not beats when it’s opened as a plug-in, modo as a stand-alone lets me play drums on the midi. I just need to learn these little basics then I’ll be rolling 😎
I set up my Akai MPK mini to Cakewalk, but it won't allow me to select "Master" as an output option, so it only makes traditional piano or drum sounds from the keyboard/pad, but not any of the synth or string sounds. Any ideas?

hi, i connected my WORLDE PANDA MINI to my laptop via mini usb, though i still cant find my MIDIs name in the preferences. one time it appeared on the screen that "a new MIDI is plugged in do u allow cakewalk to save?" and then it started working and i found it in the preferences.

You don’t need an audio interface. You might need to go into the settings and enable the headphone output.

I am learning so much from your tutorials. I purchased the keystation in your tutorial and plugged it into my computer. I followed the steps as in the video, but when I pull up the interface and start recording using the keystation, I will hear it for couple seconds and then it stops playing. There's no sound coming from the keystation keyboard. I go back to preferences and the keyboard is still checked. Do you know what the issue is and how to fix this?
Have you tried different instrument plugins to make sure it’s not just an issue with the plugin. Also can you get other sounds to work? Like if you were to record audio in or drag a piece of audio in, does that playback ok? Just to make sure it’s not an issue with your audio interface setup.

Any other sounds using the M-audio keyboard do the same thing. The keyboard stops working after a few seconds. I'm not familiar with audio interface setup. I am just beginning, really!

PC-workstation with Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1230 V2 @ 3.30GHz 3.30 GHz (4 core-8 threads) with 24GB RAM

when I play a VST Instrument (independently of this being a Cakewalk-plugin or a standalone instrument, also doesn't matter if playing through the US16x08 or through the Graphite driver) besides the generated notes their comes some noise as irregular transients or kind of feedback noise.
Despite of having this hughe memory I set the sampling rate to 2048, trying to remediate.
Couldn't solve this issue.
Maybe you have an idea of how to get rid of the problem???

Hey quick question, I downloade Cakewalk today and I'm having a good bit of fun with it. Made an account and found your vids. My Cakewalk looks WAY more basic than yours. I don't seem to be able to access instrument-specific settings and my interface basically looks like a characature of what you have. Is this because I don't have a paid membership or is there some way toi heavily alter the appearance that I just haven't found yet? Thanks dude!
Did you download “Cakewalk by Bandlab”? Or “Cakewalk Next”? Or are you using just “Bandlab”?
I’m using Cakewalk by Bandlab. It hasn’t changed its look in years. Even the updated Cakewalk Sonar looks the same so I have a feeling that you’re just using the Bandlab DAW.

Rookie question. Can I connect my Roland Juno to Cakewalk?
I know the Juno has midi in and out on it so you could definitely use that with Cakewalk. You would need an interface that allows you to connect midi in and out. Some of the Arturia Minifuse interfaces have it one them or you can find a midi specific interface if you want.
I’m not sure if your Juno has a USB connection on it that can be used as a midi keyboard. If it does then you won’t need the interface just connect by midi and set it up in cakewalk.
To get the sounds of the Juno into Cakewalk you will need an audio interface and you can connect the line out of the Juno to the line inputs of an audio interface.
