And you saved my azz again. I bought Fishman triple play midi pickup, and I wanted to play some midi sounds.. I have ton of wonderfull sounding samplers and soft synths, but that brings sometimes latency, and I wanted to play on some general midi and the hardware midi units I have built in to my BOSS GT-100. And it have some great sounding yamahas.. WOW I was blown by the sound, and I have to thank you, because I was struggling for 2 days to set up a midi channel to do just that, and finally I decided to watch again one of your wonderful tutorials, and BAM, right on the spot! Now I wanna kiss your hands for it! You should be taking money for this! Eee, from Cakewalk! Im poor 😁 but if you have a donation, id like to do it some day when I have more money. For now please enjoy my work: ua-cam.com/video/XEx6-Z3p-ds/v-deo.html

And this is why I love your videos! I have been using Cakewalk products since the 80's, so that's a long time! I decided to watch all your Cakewalk videos, even if I thought there was nothing I didn't know in a particular episode. So I'm watching MIDI basics. I get up to the part where you have the little velocity screen at the bottom, and I'm thinking, "Wait, what? you can do that?" 40 years of working with this, and I never knew! I'm laughing and shaking my head at myself, and I just had to say thanks!!!

Hi Mike, I've been using Sonar since 2009 to record my music and run midi on my single cover gigs. My old Dell that I've been using finally died a couple days ago. I'm buying a new laptop tomorrow and I plan on downloading Cakewalk by Bandlab as soon as I get it home. A couple of years ago I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 and was unable to run Sonar on it. I'm so happy that this Cakewalk software is free because from what I can tell it's pretty much the same as what I bought and can no longer use. I'm going to subscribe as soon as I'm done writing this. Great tutorials Mike!

Hi there. Thank you so much for these cakewalk tutorials. I’m 50+ and have been writing music as long as I can remember but with pen and paper and more recently Sibelius. I have just started with Cakewalk to create orchestral music before Christmas, and although I am reasonably tech savvy I find some of the basics quite confusing.

My first glance at the Cakewalk interface left me wondering where to start; might as well have been looking at an instrument panel in an airliner cockpit. Your Midi Basics got me up and running pronto. Thanks for the video! You are a good educator and your video production is excellent/professional. I'm looking forward to watching and following. This is not my first Cakewalk. Just pulled my 7/31/1992 Sweetwater Sound invoice for $349 Cakewalk Professional for Windows 1.0 along with a Roland A-80 keyboard and SC-155 Sound Canvas GS. The gear has been sitting unused for about 20 years. It's cool how after 27 years all it took was a $15 Midi USB Interface (replaced the $70 CMS-401 Midi Interface) to get it hooked up again. What's really bizarre is Cakewalk by BandLab is free. The amount of intellectual property included and hours invested in developing, testing and perfecting the code is almost incomprehensible.

Gosh what an enthralling demo! I used to work with the OLD version of Cakewalk many years ago, in association with Hauptwerk - so I could write organ music. But since upgraded my PC and now got 64bit system with 64GigRam and found that Cakewalk has gone. I find other music software for too complicated. So I am very pleased to discover that Cakewalk is back but in a much more modern form - although it is recognisable!

I work at a self-employed gig and play in usually 2 or 3 local groups. So I only get to play audio engineer sporadically. Mike's videos have proved invaluable in not only teaching me new stuff, but also providing quick review on things that I may have forgotten.

Hahaha, if you dislike the video click the thumbs down twice, that cracked me up!
Funny story about getting here: When tidiying up my media, i came across a very old diskette containing Cakewalk Apprentice, which came as a freebie with a sound card.
I thought:"How is Cakewalk doing today?" and stumbled upon Bandlab offering a free download after registering.
I used to make quite a few MIDI tracks with Cakewalk in the nineties, dealing with the quirky MIDI mapping of my Yamaha Portasound PSS 780, and Cakewalk served me well setting that up, including Yamaha specific Sysex messages.
So after the first install I wondered if the MIDI section of Cakewalk by Bandlab would be just as easy as it used to, some odd 25 years ago.
You explained it very well, and your video gave me confidence in setting up my MIDI again.
    Thanks a million!

One big thing to remember regarding "Sound on Sound" recording mode (17:00). It also records your sustain pedal, every time. So performing a second recording pass ("sound on sound"), if you use the sustain pedal it will be recorded and added to the track. This results in the track having TWO sustain pedal recordings stacked one on the other, creating a mess and ruining the initial recording.

You have saved me! :) Had just got into recording with Audacity and thought I should get a midi keyboard but soon realised my DAW didn't support it so went on the search for a new DAW. After a few google searches I found cakewalk and was struggling to see how I was ever going to be able to work it! Thankfully your video was just what I needed and I'm sure I will be binge watching them in the coming days! thank you so much!! :)

Such a wonderful tutorial. Clear and concise. Subscribing so I can get to your content faster. Lord knows I need some guidance getting through this DAW. Just downloaded today. Took a while to install; I already had a bunch of plugins for Bandlab to scan. Now I'm about ready to begin. Thanks for your precise instruction.

I'm not musical at all but want to try and do "background noise/music" to videos I create. I've just ordered a mini controller (Arturia MiniLab MkII) for fun. Installed Cakewalk yesterday. With that tiny knowledge (or rather BIG lack of😁) I started watching this channel...
...and I understand what you're on about!
That is some seriously high grades on your ability to teach 👌👌👌Subbed for sure, you will be my main guide from now. Big thanks from Sweden!

I've always wondered why people always talk about how CPU intensive DAW's are and now I know it's because they store the midi information not the instrument sound. 10 midi instruments means loading 10 VSTs plugins to play every time. Simple really. I am really looking forward to viewing more of your videos as the MPC essentials s/w is terrible and unfriendly and their tutorials even worse. Now with your help I will install and enjoy Cakewalk

This was a fantastic learning tool! Although I've recorded in midi before this was a much needed refresher for me because I'd gotten away from midi and switched to mostly all audio. Like you said, there were a few things on your screen different from mine (my Smart tool is an arrow, yours is a Star), also I didn't see the Pedal tool or the 1/32 in orange like you have. But, I enjoyed and got reacquainted with what I need. Thanks again for another great video.

July 2020. My first foray into the world of MIDI! My Cakewalk is 2020-04. I installed the AIR MiniGrand to \cakewalk\vstpluginsVST; link to the VST that came with my Keyboard, an M-Audio Keystation 61 Mk3 is below. I really like the feel of the keys; not too light and not too heavy! The keys make very little sound, and no annoying clickety clacks. I carefully read reviews of various keyboards in the $200 (USA) range and chose this one; I'm so relieved it is really satisfactory! At first it failed to do anything; a tech from M-Audio finally had me uninstall McAfee anti-virus, and then the MIDI functioned! Isn't that weird! I'm SO GLAD I went with a 61 Key board and not a 49. I just love the sound of the octave starting from C2, the lowest key on this 61 keyboard.
Mike, By the way I just checked my Cakewalk 2020.05, Build 039, 64 Bit. To add a VST, I have to click on Insert, then click on Soft Synth, and that is where all the Plugins are on this version. Or I can click on the icon that looks like a microphone, where the plugins are, and double click on one and that creates a track for that VST.
Right now I plan to mostly use it to learn piano on FLOWKEY. So far the program has been excellent.
The so called Mini Grand which came free with the Keystation 61 though, sounds anything but grand! Maybe there are reverb and more detailed settings I'm yet to discover. Maybe I'm doing something wrong; on the website it really does sound very nice, link below. I will experiment.
