I used to be a Cakewalk Sonar user up until it was shut down, I felt a bit angry as I had paid renewal of 2 years updates upfront, so I was not happy with their previous owners.
Since Bandlab resurrected the program, I have always had it installed on the computer but not used it, but that is about to change. This video and others are a very useful refresher course to help me back into those things I had forgotten.

This video is gold! I cant believe all this stuff is possible with the midi. Iv'e been using cake walk for ages and 2 days ago I couldn't even figure out how to make the drums record lol (I always make the beat in other software then export as .wav into cakewalk) I figured out how to use the SI drumkit by watching Your other video. now I have been scratching my head about how to make the drum beat less robotic. This video gives a world of options that I never knew about! nice one

Wow! another great video. A lot of content there, I think I will have to watch it a few more times to get it all to sink in. Those short cuts are really useful and the track pane is a feature that has always been hidden on my set up, mainly because I wasn't aware it was there! I'm off to start working on some midi tracks! I didn't know jack about cakewalk actually, so you're my recent Lord and savior of cakewalk! You're awesome! I would be lost without you and give up entirely. I'm a vocalist and lyricist who can't read music nor play instruments, not a musician at all, just got an acoustic guitar, piano, bass and synth, as well as a moog to learn to play and get this song out already! So this is amazing! Keep up the great work! I've had a song stuck in my head just tormenting me for the past 6 years! Of course I made it this far! This video was filled to the brim with exciting new information. All the key shortcuts, for example, and finally somebody explained the transform tool to me in an understandable way (I was already assuming Cakewalk wouldn't have the compress/expand function, other midi editors have). Thank you once again for a fantastic source of information, you've created. And if you consider to someday go into detail about setting up the workspace in a reliable way (some details always turn back to default, when I start Cakewalk, like track meters, or the right pane going back to docked to the right in the docker, not to the right of the window), you'll be loved in abundance!
I made it this far. There are many great shortcuts in Cakewalk. I use Ctrl + Page Up/Page Down often.
Ctrl +Page Down jumps to the next bar, Ctrl + Page Up to the previous bar. It's very handy while I'm editing.

Mike you really do a nice job of explaining. This is about where I am at in editing MIDI drums and other instruments. As a vet of graphics software from a previous career I can really appreciate how deep this software is. As a user of other DAWs, I am often surprised that Cakewalk by Bandlab is free :D

Great teaching Mike! I'm migrating from ACID Pro to Cakewalk, and your tutorials are invaluable. I don't know whether you've run across Stochas, but it's a free plugin that can give a really nice randomness to your drum patterns. It plays very well with Cakewalk, and you can build your patterns in Stochas then play them back into whatever drum sounds you want. There's a bit of a learning curve to it, but it's worth it. Thanks again!

Thanks Mike. As with your other Bandlab videos, this is a great learning experience. And, yes, I would like to know more about Bandlab shortcuts. I use a few, but after watching today's video , there are way too many that I don't know.
I made it to the end and this was VERY helpful in unlocking a bunch of goodies I knew were there but never took the time to figure it out. In fact the track pane has baffled me for a long time because I didn't realize that where on the pane I clicked made a difference. The long hold feature was also completely unknown by me till this video. THANKS!

I had a painful question how to pull the highlited patterns or notes without copying and paisting in order to save my time and you gave the complete and clear answer! It's a very informative video! Thanks for this! These tips help transform a “mechanical” composition into a more natural sounding performance. It blew me away how the entire feel of the rhythm you constructed changed when all you did was adjust the hi-hat and kick into triplets! So after you made the adjustments, I’m looking at the triplet notes, filling the measure exactly the same way as the previous measures, with only the adjustments made to time the notes into triplets, yet my brain is telling me that the rhythm shouldn’t “feel” so drastically different; the entire character of the rhythm changed drastically, but you only moved four notes, amazing! (Maybe it won’t be so amazing when I get a little more theory under my belt.)

That was great Mike! Even though midi input and editing is the main thing I do I still get confused with it! I really must learn the key commands too! As with others the track pane was aa revelation. Fantastic stuff. I have been using Cakewalk for over 10 years but you have introduced me to lots of new ways of using midi. I often use Groove Clip Looping for copying bars. I will do a basic bar of drums convert it to a Groove Clip and drag it out for the duration of the track. It is easy to chop it up later into separate clips and add fills and variations.

Having recently discovered Mike's videos I've learnt more in the last few weeks than in the eight years I've been using Cakewalk. As I'm not much of a keyboard player I prefer using the step sequencer than the piano roll for midi. It would be nice to see a full video on using the step sequencer if possible.

Thank you Mike! I'm a 62 year old with very little experience of digital recording and who only started making my own music back in March to occupy my time during lock down here in he UK. I have used your tutorials to familiarise myself with this DAW. While I had discovered some of the issues covered in this video myself; specifically creating expression curves for Spitfire Audios Discovery Orchestral Strings, I did not know about using the track pane. I had accidentally discovered having muiitple instruments viewed in the piano roll but didn't know how to lock to a specific instrument let alone be able to group them into specific views. That's gonna prove really handy. Although I prefer point and click menu driven choices I also appreciate the inclusion of shortcut keys where appropriate. I know there willl be others who use them extensively.

I've been using Cakewalk for years, but after I found your channel, I only started to understand and use it properly. I am so happy that there is finally someone who can explain it well and calmly! Could you show how to edit a hi-hat pedal in another midi video?
Hi Mike! I made it "this far" and it's been very handy! Thank you very much once again! By the way! I took your feed back about Arturia MiniaLab and its velocity response on board. Only, instead of the MiniLab 25, I went for the MKII and I'm very satisfied with its performance! When it's used with its Analog lab, it becomes serious stuff!!

Another trick I use with drums is to create a 1 or 2 bar pattern and then convert the clip into a 'Groove Clip'. That can then be 'dragged' from either end in track view and it automatically creates repeats of the patterns. You can also drag it in part measures. You end up with a long single clip you can move and copy/paste. You can split and isolate parts later on if you want to edit them.

I have a solution for the problem at 10:55. What I do is to have a keyboard shortcut for bounce to clips. these are my steps:
1. Click on any empty space in the piano roll (very important, because you might accidentally bounce all tracks)
2. Select all using Ctrl+A
3. Press your keyboard shortcut for "bounce to clips"
That way you can bounce midi clips into one clip without leaving the piano roll. Hope you like my suggestion. 😀
