Hey everyone, I thought I'd try talking a bit slower for this one as many people say I go to fast in my videos. 😅 Let me know what you think. Thanks for watching! Sorry for not including this but here is how you open tabs on the multidock: Go to the View menu at the top of the DAW and select the tabs you want open there. You will need an instrument track for the MIDI ones. P.S. If you want to use your *computer keyboard as a MIDI controller,* you can bring it up by going to Views > Virtual Keyboard > Computer Keyboard. Thanks to @Choco milk for pointing this out!
I was a Cakewalk customer since their only-midi seq...then last year Gibson killed Sonar: do you know if there's any customer support/upgrade project by Bandlab or is this only a walking corpse which will end with next win versions??
@@Hamfantasy56 To my understanding and what I have seen so far, BandLab is releasing updates and new features in CakeWalk every few months. I don't think they are planning to stop developing. They have plans to make money by another means not yet announced. But, CakeWalk as is now and with future improvements will always be free (according to BandLab announcements and confirmations when many users ask).
I've never in 10 years witnessed such a smooth flowing, quick and concise, informative tutorial for ANYTHING ever. I wish you did guides for everything.
I’ve been making Cakewalk tutorials for a long time and I have to say, yours are really on point man. Great to see others teaching about this powerful DAW!
This is the standard for all software introduction videos. I've watched so many tutorials on how to edit videos and audio and they always seem to ignore the most basic thing which is how to navigate the interface and the basic settings to start with. Excellent concept and execution. Thank you for this and I will be checking out more of your videos soon.
This was the first DAW I used for about a year and a half. Then I switched to Reaper, now Ableton. Watching this video made me realize how much I missed out on Cakewalk since I never looked up tutorials and was pretty much self taught.
Even though it's a lot information at once, nobody has ever explained so perfectly. I mean this must be the tutorial video for DAWs I've ever seen. Thanks a lot!
@@TransverseAudio It was more than enough to get me over the hump of an unfamiliar interface and help me figure out the actual window I wanted to be in, so that's good.
This was my first sequencer back in mid ‘90s. Old good daw from old good times. I’m glad to see it’s here around this times, modernized but faithful to itself.
This is the first video I ever watched after switching from audacity to LMMS and finally to cakewalk. And this video was so straightforward. I loved it! And now cakewalk is my main DAW Thanks, Jake!
Hi, I'm guessing that this is a brilliant introduction to Cakewalk, but I completely disagree that it is for beginners. To me, a beginner is someone who is completely unfamiliar with basic techniques, terminology and actions. I've only just now worked out what a 'DAW' is, for example. I'm afraid my eyes glazed over after a minute or two, haven't got a clue what's really going on, so if this is an entry-level tutorial then I now realise that this is not for me and that I'd better look for a dedicated multi-track recording console. I think if you're going to post a video tutorial for 'beginners' then you should assume that a viewer may not understand little, if anything, of the terminology and data-manipulation that is shown, and may not even have the technical knowledge beyond being able to turn a PC on and load up UA-cam. As I said, I'm sure that for those with the basic tech knowledge on the subject already that this is an excellent intro to Cakewalk and it's features.
Hey, thank you for such a thoughtful comment on this. I understand where you're coming from but my intentions were for people new to Cakewalk, not DAWs entirely. I don't think you should give up on them but instead look up a tutorial about what a DAW is and what it can do. I think that is a great place to start.
Tbh I came here, watched the tutorial and before that I didn't know anything about these terms and I have never had a DAW before. I watched this video and checked up those parts he showed in the video. I learned something new and just by discovering things by myself I learned how to do simple actions with it. So actually you don't need to know anything, you only need some curiosity! So don't give up!
he says beginners for this particular DAW not daws in general. there are plenty of other videos that break it down even further. then you can come back to this
Great tutorial! For me, this was a good overview of the DAW and its features. Being familiar with other DAWs did help me to follow what was explained. If I were a newbie, I think the speed of the tutorial might have been a bit intimidating, but from the perspective of an intermediate user I think that this was a very intuitive look at the DAW. The layout was explained in about the same order in which I would have asked questions. This quickly helped me to grasp where the various "things" were, such as the mixer rack, track list, and list of plugins. Overall I would give this a 5-star review if that was a thing on UA-cam. I haven't looked through any of the other videos in the channel yet, but I will definitely be poking through some more! If there isn't one already, I would love a video that focuses specifically on workflow tips, perhaps also broken down by area in the DAW. There were already a few tips in this video which I really liked, and I think an entire video just focusing on various tips and mouse/keyboard shortcuts would be really valuable for more experienced users that really want to establish a more efficient workflow.
Hey, thank you very much for an in-depth review of the video! I'm glad you enjoyed the content and thank you for the feedback on how it could be made better and for future videos on Cakewalk.
I actually purchased Sonar back in the day and I found it so difficult to use that I eventually ditched it and moved to FL Studio. If this video had been available back then it would have been so much easier.
I just downloaded this and WOW.....it's REALLY GOOD. I can't believe this is free! The last time I used Cakewalk was Sonar 2. I've been using Reason, Reaper, and Mixcraft lately but I can't wait to start using this "new" daw.
"Now, the default layout of the DAW is pretty straightforward." I think what you meant to say there was, "Now, the default layout of the DAW is absolutely overwhelming." ;) Thanks for your help! :)
This is great, clear and concise. It's true that you go quickly, but there's a lot of material to cover so I'm happy with the pacing. Naturally, I'm going to be watching it a few times and taking written notes. Thanks for doing this.
`Transverse Audio You’ve done a really good job with this video. I feel like I can just download it start using it right away after watching this. I’ve watched a few times and just might try it. Similar to Acid Pro which I’ve used before. Anyways I’ve liked & subbed 👍🏽 nice work
I'm so glad Cakewalk is free now. My old punk band from years ago recorded 2 EPs, one was recorded in the basement with Cakewalk, the other was in a studio with ProTools. I know the engineer has a lot to do with this, but the one we did with Cakewalk sounds WAY better than the one we did in ProTools.
I got to the part where you talked about suspending playback outside of the DAW and knew this was going to be an awesome tutorial. You immediately solved my FIRST problem.
Thank you, I'm glad it helped you so soon in the video! I don't know why they didn't make it a default as it was a problem for me when I first used Cakewalk too.
Having grown too tired of the endless bugs in Studio One, I thought... hey lets try this free DAW. It has more learning curve than Studio One, but it is a phenomenally capable and stable DAW. Actually I really am starting to love it. It's also very efficient - Studio One used to regularly run at 90% CPU usage, but Cakewalk is running at 30-40% with the same project and plugins. At least for me - this is going to be my workhorse for the foreseeable future.
Hey, guys... this video is not for beginners in music production, but beginners in Cakewalk! But it is a complete view in a few minutes. The best to do is to put the hands to work! Practice makes perfection!!
I hope it's zapped in a good way! What I used to do for tutorials was pause after a short bit, implement what I just learned, then continued on with the video. Doing this 2-3 times for a video makes it pretty close to fully understandable that you can do later at any time by memory.
Just downloaded this program. Coming from 10years of using Logic 9 on iMac but wanting a DAW for a windows laptop. Was previously using openlabs stagelight but only just found out today about roland/zenbeats takeover..., one year too late, which left a bitter taste in my mouth. Didn't really dig that interface. I am glad I went with cakewalk. Everything from the install and setup was rather hassle free. Managed to figure out most of the basics easily but this video definitely helped that extra bit. Lots of good features for a free DAW! Subscribed.
This is excellent. I used the original Cakewalk in DOS!!!! over the years, I stayed true to it as it added audio, etc. But eventually, Sonar simply became too expensive to update and maintain. While I need to re-learn much of this, who can argue with getting one of the very best Digital Desktop Recorders EVER for.....Free! Thank you!
Nice! It's also really good to see this DAW made free as it was one of the best paid options out there. Although it doesn't come with all of the plugins from the original, I think it is definitely worth getting this one. I'm glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching!
Perfect! Just the smart fast no nonsense overview I was looking for! Thanks for posting this Jake!! And the great thing about UA-cam - I can replay and rewind as many times as needed for everything to sink in. If it's too fast I can change the playback speed in YT too.
I have never in my entire life found a tutorial this useful. Holy moley. Thank you for giving me 1000% more motivation to start making music right away!
i know that this program isn’t for absolute beginners (me) and this video was confusing but i kinda got it. i watched this video while everything was installing. i know that I didn’t “get” everything about the video but i’m 100% happy to watch it a few more times and play around with the program. i was really excited to get into mixing but there aren’t that many programs that are as nearly flawless as this one is made out to be. i’m excited
Thanks for sharing! It definitely is a video to watch a little bit, pause, implement what you learned, and repeat. I'm glad you found software to mix, enjoy!
This is a REALLY good video presentation. The slower talking helps a lot. I still can't believe how much information you present in an 11 minute video.
Hmm, Check the description for getting it in the multidock or my pinned comment if you want to have an onscreen computer keyboard to midi option. Unless you mean something else?
Lucky t o have found your channel. I have been a Logic Pro user for a long time but no longer have a mac and now use a Windows laptop. Finding both Cakewalk by Bandlab and your channel gave me the opportunity to finally get back into the game. Thanks a lot and will definitely be one of your many followers in learning Cakewalk from your very informational and easy to follow videos.
Have moved to Cakewalk from Audacity..love Cakewalk! But background noise removal was easy in Audacity: you start recording but don't sing or play for say 5 to 10 seconds. Then select a 5 second clip and check for background noise. You can then remove the noise in the entire recording. No such feature in Cakewalk. Can anyone suggest what I can do? Thx!
You move your cursor like lightning to the point that it is near impossible to figure out what the heck you are doing...OK, have followed your suggestion and made the video speed at 0.75 and that helped quite a bit! :) And oh, one thing: I do karaoke a lot. When I import an MP3, I found it near impossible to lower the MP3 volume; at the end of your video you mention the pre-input gain. Indeed, after much struggle, I found that is the only way to lower the MP3 volume! Thanks for that!
@@TransverseAudio yeah there's a lot going on right now in my life s idk if something like this would be a great idea... but maybe in the future i'll give it another shot
same dude i have to create five songs for a school project but i'm starting with Bandlab Mix Editor because it's soooo much more simple, it's kinda like garageband. i understand nothing about cakewalk or other DAWs and these tutorials make me more confused and demotivated than I did before so I just stick to the easy stuff first
Agreed to an extent. A little time just searching and trying, watching a few tutorial vids and you'll be on your way to start understanding. I mean literally a few hours of time and you'll understand better. The terms and process seems so intricate and complicated. It sounds like a language u dont understand. But its not that complex once u get into it. I taught myself. IT IS...a lifetime learning process. But what i loved...is once i figured out the basics...i could sit in front of any program, search around to find what i need...and work it like i always used it. I tell everyone...music production is a constant investment of time and money if your serious...if you have neither to spare...or willing to sacrifice...this isnt for you.
I was maybe 14 when I got a digitech GNX4 multi fx pedal and it came with a copy of sonar. It used to look like audacity from what I remember and sucked lmao. Interesting to see it evolve into what it is today.
I just decided to attempt making music since I'd like to make a game and that is the one thing I'm completely clueless about. So I'm trying a bunch of DAWs and earlier watched another tutorial for a different one since I could not find the pianoroll (really) and it was a horrible video (didn't like the program either). This on the other hand bombarded me with useful info and didn't waste any time doing it. Great!
I wish I knew half of what this guy is talking about lmao I literally just looked up free DAW, never touched one in my life and I don't even know how to put notes down
Thank you, this video was a huge help! Just one question: It plays audio clips perfectly fine but any time I import MIDI files there is literally no sound. I know it's not muted and the files should be fine. Any suggestions?
I just watched the LMMS tutorial you made and you recommended me to a video you made yesterday about top 5 free DAWs. Cakewalk appeared there, and then I came to this video. I actually tried downloading cakewalk a while back, but I did not know how to and accidentally installed BandLab from the assistant. Again, this video helped so much!
@@TransverseAudio Hmm... It really depends, I'm probably gonna use both for a while to decide... But I think in the long run I am gonna end up using Cakewalk over LMMS.
Yeah, both have their pros and cons. I think LMMS is good for Chiptune or retro stuff where as Cakewalk may be overkill for that. Although, Cakewalk does have a lot more features so it's good that your trying both out.
Ive been using Cakewalk since Sonar 4 (currently using X) but ill definitely download this version aswell! Thank you for keeping one of the best DAWs alive!!!
Great video. Would like to see you create a song with this and show the audio track with a waveform.. slicing and fading.. basic audio editing.. thanks
What a great intro video! Yes, he DOES speak quickly (but clearly) however if you miss something, which I did many times, simply hit the left cursor button on your PC keyboard once or more to review. Thank you Transverse Audio. I can't wait to deep dive into Cakewalk again.
Thank you for this video. I'm new user to Cakewalk with Addictive Drums 2 plug-in. When I playback the beat in Cakewalk, somehow I don't hear any sound. Can anyone answer this question?
Hey, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Although I'm not 100% sure, it may either be your volume levels in the plugin/DAW (pre-gain or mixer level) or could be your preferences. If you have something else open with media playing, you'll have to check off the box I mentioned in the beginning of the video to get it to work I think. I would also check your drivers and playback devices, even with your computer if nothing else works from the DAWs settings. I hope this helps, let me know how it goes!
its legit, nearly impossible to do this tutorial, just because the audio of my speakers keeps needing me to close cakewalk to even listen to this tutorial on youtube.
I certainly had been @@TransverseAudio , and really also used cakewalk back then while it was still Sonar-branded. However after that time you're never sure if the habits you used to have, even work anymore. Just think windows 3.1 vs windows 10 ;) I see the similar playlist + rack philosophy still applies, though is covered in more glitter and certainly works snappier. Oh and actually, I may have a question, since I'm already bothering you. Em trying to get 3 usb mics to work simultaneously via asio4all (saw you're using it too), but given one is from a different manufacturer than the 2 others, it tends to drift away over time. You think it's something that can be battled on the record level, or the only hope is to manually sync the track post-recording ? What's the case for asio4all for you anyway ?
Cool to hear! It wasn't too long ago since it was called Sonar (early last year). You might be able to fix your problem via the preferences menu. Turn on advanced on the bottom and go to "Sync and Catching" under Audio. On the bottom, there is "record latency adjustment" that you might have to play around with. Other than that you might be able to "remove DC offset during recording" under "Playback and Recording". I've never come up against this so I'm not totally sure if it can be solved on the recording level.
@@TransverseAudio Ok yeah I saw some of the places you mention, but not all I think. Will check them out. Many thanks buddy! As for the dates, I might be dreaming it was Sonar back then, but I'm sure I've done DAWs last, long time before my kids arrived, so just guessing around 10 years or so. Though you know (or not!) sleepless nights can melt your brain in no time, especially combined with poop, so who knows! ;)
Hey, thanks for asking! You will probably need to go into the preferences menu > Audio > Playback & recording and set your Driver Mode to something else until it works. Let me know how it goes.
@@TransverseAudio I have tried the five driver modes (WDM/KS, WASAPI Exlusive, WASAPI Shared, ASIO and MME 32-bit), but none of them seem to work. I have tried reinstalling the software as well but that did not make a difference.
@@bartgeers9803 That is strange. Try checking the box for suspending audio driver when not in focus - I talk about it when I go over the preferences menu. Restart the program and if that doesn't work, I don't know what could fix it.
Having been a Sonar user, I may have an answer. If you have a MIDI track in Sonar, you have to insert a soft synth like TTS-1 or Dimension Pro and assign it to that track in order to hear the music in that track play. Don't know what soft synths or plugins are included with Cakewalk by BandLab, but I am guessing it would work the same way. Everyone who is not hearing music may be in this same situation. Just a guess!
Thanks for tutorial video! I've been using Audacity to record, mix, and master my music. But now I wanted to start adding drums and other cool effects so I needed a basic introductions video for this software. Thanks again for lesson!
You will need to check the box in the preferences menu for pausing/suspending the cakewalk audio engine to play media when you minimize the DAW. I mentioned it when I go over the settings. You can't play them at the same time though, and I would recommend watching a part of the video and pausing to go and put it to practice.
@@Castafer Thank you, I like to keep my videos to the point. I'm glad you enjoyed it! T7 is another good one, I think it ranks pretty high in the free DAW space. I would need to use it to get a better opinion on it though. It's unfortunate that it has problems like that though.
@@Castafer Yeah, EW is a good company for orchestral instruments. Don't forget that Bandlab is a for-profit business and this was most likely released to do just that in some way. Whether direct in the future or indirect via influence or reputation. Don't get me wrong though, it really is great to see this thing made free and is great of them to do!
Hmm, do you have a virtual instrument or an audio file on your track that you're trying to hear audio from? You may need to go into the preferences menu too and set up your drivers. Make sure you check the box where I go over how it can let you use UA-cam and stuff (external media) when the DAW is open, it might be interfering with it too.
Hey, you're welcome! Absolutely, Cakewalk used to be one of the best paid DAWs but was made free after a series of acquisitions by companies. You can definitely use this DAW professionally.
@@TransverseAudio Thanks for this. I don't have the money for FL right now. Is this better than the FL demo? It seems like you can do a lot more with it and also seems easier to use.
@@craigdaubbeats-rapinstrume9185 Hey, you're welcome! Good for you for not resorting to piracy. I think it is better than the FL demo for sure as you can re-open saved projects. As for ease of use, FL wins hands down in my opinion, but that may be due to the fact that it's where I started from and is where I spent a lot of time producing in.
You didn't answer the question I have, but the video was very informative, and easy to follow. You seem pretty well versed in this program, so all in all it was helpful. Appreciate it.
It's a different DAW entirely. Bandlab is an online DAW and Cakewalk is a full-featured downloadable DAW. You can get it from the link I provided in the description of the video.
You need to have a MIDI track in the playlist. Selected it and then go to Views > Piano roll. It will then be in the multidock and the same would apply to the other tabs you can open there from that same menu.
I was involved in a studio project over ten years ago.. we used nuendo so that was my first experience in DAWs. I learnt that software but sadly I was made homeless and was forced to sell off my pc but I never lost the passion. I'm saving now for a good pc which these days is quite a lot of money this free DAW will help me on my journey to have a complete home set up so I can start creating music again.. This is a great tutorial for beginners! Since I am one 😅 I will watch more tutorials to be step-by-step closer to be prepared to go to the music production community!! ❤
Ouch, the deal-breaker. Sorry for not going in depth with that part, I really wanted to focus on how to use the DAW rather than synths and other stuff. Good point though, it may have been nice to add in at least a sample of those two. I hope you found it to be at least a "good" video. 😅
There was a comment like that talking about the video maker sounding like Kermit on some video i think another DAW video i saw and people were like i can't unhear Kermit now that you pointed it out 😀 you saw that?
You lost me when you began telling me how to configure the settings, but didn't explain what we were doing. For example "set the sample rate to..." - what is sample rate and why are you selecting that rate? A noob like me is here to learn. Maybe you should say "it takes too long to explain what these are in this video and you don't need to know this to start making music so see my other video if you want to learn what these settings do".
Well, I don't have another video that shows that. And just as you said, you don't need to know it. However, you're right, I should make a video that explains the basic terminology and features of a typical DAW to watch first.
You got me interested in this software again. I checked it in April 2018 when I first heard about Bandlab being free. I will definitely install it again. This introduction video is top notch!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Bandlab is releasing updates for it too, I just got notified of one recently I think. Nothing major as far as I know but it's nice to see them continue to improve the DAW since acquiring it last year - just around the time you checked it out.
Holy cow, what a comprehensive video. I've used cakewalk since 1994 but I've only upgraded a few times. Every time I did, so much had changed that the learning curve was almost too steep for me. But now with UA-cam videos like the one you have provided, it makes things so much less overwhelming. I'm not saying that it is a "cakewalk" Ha! But it sure makes for relatively easy referencing verses their 2000 page manual. Thank you so much for your contributions.
Very glad to know you enjoyed this tutorial! It's nice to hear you're support and to know about your journey with the software, thanks for sharing your thoughts.
@@TransverseAudio you're welcome, downloading the program is a whole nother issue. I keep getting redirected to the bandlab assistant. I already have that, I need the program itself, but it keeps taking me in circles

@@TransverseAudio I appreciate you responding. When I try to install I get a window that asks me if I want to download some add-ons. Thanks and Salute! I always used the inimitable Yamaha SY85 in the past) p.s. I looked at (Dis)Ableton and it's an utterly and totally non-intuitive interface.. a pain in the arse to work with, not to mention having to be 'hooked in' to the online upload / download / update malarkey.. a fool's game. p.p.s My feeling is that Ableton and the like are not for musicians, composers and songwriters.. They have been 'formulated' for those who can be made to believe they are such.. 😉 Thanks again for a very clear, succinct and useful tutorial!
Long before I even had a DAW or knew what a VST instrument was I would watch videos promoting the 4 main instruments that come with Cakewalk thinking there was not a hope in Hell that I would ever be able to afford such software and now you can get it for free. The drums and e piano VSTs are what drew me into installing Cakewalk, it even comes with a general midi 2 sound module which is good as it means I can use selected Roland Sound Canvas sounds within Cakewalk without having to hook up my SC-88 Pro which I would do with Mixcraft and in Cubase Artist 7 I have Sound Canvas VA so at least I have high quality Sound Canvas sounds accessible from all my DAWs either at the click of the mouse or the SC-88 Pro via the USB midi interface. Even if I can't activate Cakewalk I'm still going to use it for some of my projects and it might even push me to finish a backing track from start to finish in a day. BandLab assistant doesn't seem to be responding at the moment and I can't be bothered to reinstall it. I'm still hoping as soon as lockdown has been lifted I will be able to go back to work then I will be in a position to buy the full version of Kontakt so I can try out freeware libraries and I also wanted to buy EZ Drummer 2. I'm not too bothered about the BandLab online DAW.
Hey, thanks for sharing all your experience with this DAW. It's crazy how much has become free or is just made to be free in the last decade. The stock plugins are pretty good, I do like the general MIDI sampler. Native Instruments does make some high-quality products for sure.
I currently have Kontakt Player and back in February I bought Abbey Roads Studio Drummer Collection for a reasonable price of £179 and last year I got Halion 6 at 50% off discount and it also comes with Halion Sonic 3 which Cakewalk automatically recognizes so I can use the premium Cakewalk instruments with plenty of different sound sets as Halion Sonic 3 is loaded and Halion 6 even comes with a premium piano and string libraries.
Halion 6 is actually almost as expensive as Kontakt but at just £210 it would have been be rude not to but I would have never paid full wack for it even though I don't regret buying it and it is a fantastic piece of software that blows version 1 out of the water. If I was in a position to do so and needed Kontakt right away then I would be willing to pay £359 for Kontakt. I think Bandlab updated it'self overnight and Cakewalk seems to be activated so I should be able to save my projects and mixdown audio stems.
Nice, I'm glad Cakewalk is working now. Have you considered getting Komplete? If you are interested in other Native Instruments plugins, it may be a huge deal, especially when it goes on sale.

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed!
hell yeah dude
omagad I was gonna comment the same thing, this video is the best in the universe.
Intro ??? Man...
This tutorial wasn't helpful at all in my opinion. I understood barely anything as some things aren't the same as what was shown
@@user-qf5kl6cv2y Yeah the multidock just fuckn appears????
This was the first DAW I used for about a year and a half. Then I switched to Reaper, now Ableton. Watching this video made me realize how much I missed out on Cakewalk since I never looked up tutorials and was pretty much self taught.
When I saw you could write sheet music, I was sold on giving it a shot.
I hope you like it! Sheet music editing is a rare thing for DAWs to have I find.
Is tabs possible?
Even though it's a lot information at once, nobody has ever explained so perfectly. I mean this must be the tutorial video for DAWs I've ever seen. Thanks a lot!
Hey, thanks for letting me know you found it so helpful! You're welcome.
I may still have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, but thanks to this video I was able to scrape together enough understanding to keep going.
Nice, I'm glad it could help! Sorry it wasn't more.
Nice, pretty cool how it's free now too.
I got started with cakewalk pro audio 9 on a windows pc and a tascam 4 track tape recorder. Back then cakewalk retailed for $350.
This is the first video I ever watched after switching from audacity to LMMS and finally to cakewalk. And this video was so straightforward. I loved it! And now cakewalk is my main DAW
Thanks, Jake!
Hey, I'm glad this helped you! Thanks for sharing your feedback, it's nice to know.
So don't give up!
he says beginners for this particular DAW not daws in general. there are plenty of other videos that break it down even further. then you can come back to this
@@TransverseAudio Great reply!!
@@jeesjees3024 That's great. Thanks for sharing your point of view, it is powerful!
I just got cakewalk working on Linux and think I’ve finally found my guitar tone, it’s an incredible DAW
I have a newfound respect for music producers! Dang, I didn't know it was this hard.

Nice! I really like Cakewalk. It's the best free DAW imo and even competes with paid options.

That was a lot of information in a short period of time, my brain is zapped!
Subscribed.
Thank you for sharing your experience with this. I appreciate your kindness as well.
This is, by far, the best tutorial for this app that I have seen.

Perfect! Just the smart fast no nonsense overview I was looking for! Thanks for posting this Jake!! And the great thing about UA-cam - I can replay and rewind as many times as needed for everything to sink in. If it's too fast I can change the playback speed in YT too.

So I'm trying a bunch of DAWs and earlier watched another tutorial for a different one since I could not find the pianoroll (really) and it was a horrible video (didn't like the program either). The multidock holds the console, you can find the tabs there in the View menu at the top of the DAW.

I certainly had been @@TransverseAudio , and really also used cakewalk back then while it was still Sonar-branded. However after that time you're never sure if the habits you used to have, even work anymore. Just think windows 3.1 vs windows 10 ;)
I see the similar playlist + rack philosophy still applies, though is covered in more glitter and certainly works snappier.

As for ease of use, FL wins hands down in my opinion, but that may be due to the fact that it's where I started from and is where I spent a lot of time producing in.
Yes it can. It will not be the weak link in your production.
@@cary3428 Agreed, it really does offer great features for a DAW.
You didn't answer the question I have, but the video was very informative, and easy to follow. You seem pretty well versed in this program, so all in all it was helpful. Appreciate it.
Thank you for letting me know. I'm glad it was helpful!
Been using cakewalk for years and years and still learned a ton of shit from this video. Many thanks
It's great to know it helped you, even with experience. You're welcome and thank you!
0:43 I only got the first one. I assume the second one is the actual "full version"? Where do I get it though?
It's a different DAW entirely. Bandlab is an online DAW and Cakewalk is a full-featured downloadable DAW. You can get it from the link I provided in the description of the video.
@@TransverseAudio BandLab isn't an online DAW. You download it as you would SONAR/previous Cakewalk products.
@@chrisking8379 Bandlab is online, Cakewalk is offline.
how do I find the piano roll, I can't find it! pls help
You need to have a MIDI track in the playlist. Selected it and then go to Views > Piano roll. It will then be in the multidock and the same would apply to the other tabs you can open there from that same menu.
there is no sound in my prodject
Are you able to play samples and synths, just without sound? Or are you trying to get those into the DAW?
`Transverse Audio well I was able to hear sound with the demo project but not with my own. However, I have seemed to fix it.
do you have headphones plugged in?
Wow! Veryhelpful "runthrough" for a guy who has not touched his DAW for over a year. Thanks!
Hey, thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed!
I'm gonna try it out soon as.. but my end goal for me is Steinberg cubase pro 10 cos I love the whole brand probably cos that's the DAW I know I guess.. anyway peace and love
@@bmh770 Interesting to hear part of your story, sometimes the hardest things we go through in life are the things that make us the strongest. I believe if God puts you through something, even if it's painful, it's always good and just. Keep going, may the Pheonix rise from its ashes.
This is a great tutorial for beginners! Since I am one 😅 I will watch more tutorials to be step-by-step closer to be prepared to go to the music production community!! ❤
I'd say great video! But... you failed to demonstrate one single sound being played or recorded!🤣
Ouch, the deal-breaker. Sorry for not going in depth with that part, I really wanted to focus on how to use the DAW rather than synths and other stuff. Good point though, it may have been nice to add in at least a sample of those two. I hope you found it to be at least a "good" video. 😅
Yes, there is nothing anywhere really about using this DAW for recording vocals
man sounds like kermit
Oh c'mon! no way. Other than that, did you enjoy the video?
There was a comment like that talking about the video maker sounding like Kermit on some video i think another DAW video i saw and people were like i can't unhear Kermit now that you pointed it out 😀 you saw that?
@@jeremyshiner7341 I did not sir
@@TransverseAudio oh aye shem
@@deezcandice9932 What does that mean?
Now all I have to do is figure out how to download the program.
@@TransverseAudio you're welcome, downloading the program is a whole nother issue. I keep getting redirected to the bandlab assistant. I already have that, I need the program itself, but it keeps taking me in circles
I had to download the bandlab assistant, and through that I downloaded Cakewalk. After that you can locate the Cakewalk program and launch it directly without having to go through the assistant - something I was doing for some time.
@@TransverseAudio I appreciate you responding. When I try to install I get a window that asks me if I want to download some add-ons. The add-ons are studio instruments sweet, drum replacer, melodyne, theme editor. It will not install anything without me checking at least one of these boxes. And when I click one of the boxes and click install nothing happens.
Is it free?
Yes, of course! Link is in the description to download it.

Romans 10:9 New International Version (NIV)
9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
I'm getting back into my music, and being old-school, I've returned to my favourite 'DAW' ~ the incomparable CoolEdit ~ But now needing more facility as I want to use synths, sound banks and other sequencers like the QY100 ~ I've been examining various options, and Your Cakewalk tutorial, and Cakewalk itself ~ is superb and it's largely thanks to these that I'm opting for Cakewalk with QY100 and CoolEdit as my core units.. Thanks and Salute!
I always used the inimitable Yamaha SY85 in the past)
Thanks again for a very clear, succinct and useful tutorial!
Long before I even had a DAW or knew what a VST instrument was I would watch videos promoting the 4 main instruments that come with Cakewalk
thinking there was not a hope in Hell that I would ever be able to afford such software and now you can get it for free.
The drums and e piano VSTs are what drew me into installing Cakewalk, it even comes with a general midi 2 sound module which is good as it means
I can use selected Roland Sound Canvas sounds within Cakewalk without having to hook up my SC-88 Pro which I would do with Mixcraft and in Cubase Artist 7
I have Sound Canvas VA so at least I have high quality Sound Canvas sounds accessible from all my DAWs either at the click of the mouse or the SC-88 Pro
via the USB midi interface.
Even if I can't activate Cakewalk I'm still going to use it for some of my projects and it might even push me to finish a backing track from start to finish in a day.
BandLab assistant doesn't seem to be responding at the moment and I can't be bothered to reinstall it. I'm still hoping as soon as lockdown has been lifted
I will be able to go back to work then I will be in a position to buy the full version of Kontakt so I can try out freeware libraries and I also wanted to buy EZ Drummer 2.
I currently have Kontakt Player and back in February I bought Abbey Roads Studio Drummer Collection for a reasonable price of £179 and last year I got Halion 6 at 50%
off discount and it also comes with Halion Sonic 3 which Cakewalk automatically recognizes so I can use the premium Cakewalk instruments with plenty of different
sound sets as Halion Sonic 3 is loaded and Halion 6 even comes with a premium piano and string libraries.
Nice, I won't buy an expensive plugin unless it's on sale. - Unless it doesn't go on sale.
Halion 6 is actually almost as expensive as Kontakt but at just £210 it would have been be rude not to but I would have never paid full wack for it even though
I don't regret buying it and it is a fantastic piece of software that blows version 1 out of the water. If I was in a position to do so and needed Kontakt right away
then I would be willing to pay £359 for Kontakt.
The best introduction video I´ve ever seen for a DAW ( and most other things I´m interested in !)
Thank you very much! I'm glad you appreciate the video.
