  • How to mod USB-C to the PlayStation Vita 2000 SLIM LCD
    OLED usb-c tutorial video can be found here:
    This mod has some difficult, tiny soldering. This isn't for beginners, but if you stick to soldering to the pins and continually try then clean, try then clean until you succeed, you shouldn't damage your board.
    I suggest using 400c to solder to the port pins. This is a very high temp, I don't usually advise going that high.

    Hey, I since you tinkering with usb port, mb you by any chance tried to stream pc via it onto vita? I mean like "vnc", moonlight, just hardwired through usb port, with idea of it being much faster than wifi over the air? PSP is having this for like 10 years with PSPDisp, I was quite surprised not finding out the same for vita..

    For d data + and - what's the smallest wires that can be used?..... would enamel wire that's .1 or .7 work?... Or it being so small would it limit the speed or even bottle neck transfer speeds ?

    • @anderxale1
      @anderxale1  2 роки тому +2

      I don't really know!
      My 30 AWG for the data lines is equivalent to 0.25 mm, so your 0.7mm enamel wire will work for sure!
      USB specifications say the USB 2.0 wires should all be 28 AWG and I went smaller for data using 30 AWG which is fine for short distances.
      Also, for data I prefer thicker shielding to protect the signal. Enamel wires are made for winding and not protecting a signal.
      Many USB Vita mods are done with enamel wire but it spooks me. I'm not educated on DC circuitry, I just read a lot.

      I haven't tried... but it's the same as the micro-usb port.
      I hear that the Vita charges fine while outputting video over usb. If you are having issues, you may want to try a powered USB hub that can provide 1.3A or more to it's ports - many computers can only supply 0.5A-1A over USB.
      Also "USB charging" needs to be turned on in Vita settings.
      If you are using a raspberry pi, make sure you are using a strong enough power adapter. A powered hub would also solve pi underpowered port issues.
      Sorry that I don't have much experience with this, I'm looking at making some docks. I'll have more information and a video or two later.

    Do you have tips for making sure that if I replace the original Micro with a Type-C port, the new port aligns/fits with the original hole? Or how to widen it in case it doesn't...
    As well as if a section of the motherboard needs to be modified, or a Type-C port can just be slotted in the same place the Micro-USB sits.
    This is really important, because as the Vitas are going to get older and older, the USB ports will get corroded, as well as Micro just being an awful, fragile, cheap port that requires an adapter at this point.
    Thank you!

      I just ran a poll on which SLIM I should replace the micro-usb with usb-c. I'll be making a video on replacing the port on the Metallic Red version. I'm doing that video after these 3 current projects.
      I haven't done a replacement port yet. Mine will line up with the original hole, but the hole does need to be larger.
      I don't like micro-usb at all.

    It is a spectacular mod, simply very useful, with hardly any damage to the case, not like they do in other USB-C mods that literally completely destroy the case and make a mess of connections. Yours is honestly a mod that leaves you with the Open mouth, how simple you make it and how well the 2 functional ports look, a work of art, congratulations. Like+Subscribed ;)

    I wonder if you can use those usb c or micro usb pendrives as ux0, since the port is able to read data, would be cool but unnecessary since I already got my sd2vita but still...

    • @anderxale1
      @anderxale1  2 роки тому +1

      It would be awesome, then we could install apps and games to SD2Vita from a USB flash drive.
      Unfortunately, the USB port on the Vita is not a host port. A USB host is required to control a USB device and supply it power.
      The USB port on a Vita is a client port (device port). It needs to connect to a host port and have the host control it.
      Vita OLED 3G have an internal USB Host port, that's why devs can create/install internal USB devices like PSVSD or USB port.

      If you have a raspberry pi you can use a plug-in that outputs video over USB. That setup is called Vita dock. It has good and bad.
      You can use a vita dock setup with this port! This won't do video out on it's own though...

    Not related to the video but I have a few questions about the battery mod. Why exactly do LiPo batteries die so quickly in the Vita? I've done a battery mod in a Dualshock 4 and the battery is still operational (although I have not done a full discharge time test since I first installed it as I prefer to keep my batteries from discharging too low to preserve them as much as I can).
    You were saying that a replacement battery (LiPo) in a Vita would only last about 3 years. That seems a bit low considering how phone batteries (being LiPos these days) seem to last 5-6 years (with lowered capacity obviously). Is the 3 years in relation to heavy use (say 8 hours a day) and once the battery gets to a cut off capacity and high enough cycles it's no longer healthy and should be disposed of?
    Say I played for 3 hours at a time (on an off, not everyday). Would the battery last longer than 3 years? Or is it just the fact that I wouldn't be using it for long enough (and never let them discharge too much) to notice the degradation? If you were using a Vita in that use case, would you continue using it or would you replace it out of other concerns?
    Are there any new lithium ion (not the SP86R batteries since they're either ancient stock or poor quality) batteries for the Vita, or is it pretty much impossible to find them in a form factor that would fit the Vita since lithium polymer batteries tend to be preferred these days?
    Do you know of any way to limit the Vita to 80% charge (besides just watching it charge lol)?
    If I perform your mod (on the slim) and use a 2200 mAh battery, would I have to perform the battery reset thing while using it or would the similar capacity negate having to do that?
    Last question, do you know of anyway to boot into another (better) launcher without using an app that just loads an app on boot since backing out will just take you back to the LiveArea? Although to be honest, I would just settle for more bubbles lol.
    Sorry for all the questions by the way lol. I'm not performing the mod yet since my battery is ok but just wanted know some things since everything I've heard regarding Vita battery mods has been disappointing until I randomly decided to check on any progress today and your videos popped up :).

    • @anderxale1
      @anderxale1  2 роки тому +1

      LiPos only lasting 1-3 years depends on source and treatment.
      LiPos have a few factors for lifepan.
      1. Build quality - the electrolyte in cheap LiPos break down. LiPos have different chemistries - a reputable LiPo maker that told me 3-5 years I may believe (Sony, Samsung) - but where do you find a reputable LiPo vender? - I can only find cheapos.
      2. Number of cycles - a cycle is a full discharge and full charge (from 4.2v down to 3.2v) partial discharges/recharges count as partial cycles. Cheap LiPos only last about 400 cycles. Fully cycle the Vita every day and that's just over a year! Play 4 hours a day with an 8 hour battery - that's just about 2.5 years - don't play every day and get more.
      3. Temperature - try to keep near 19-25C/65-78F. Too hot and cold can lower lifespan if the battery is full or empty.
      4. How full/empty cycles take the battery lowers lifespan. Keeping a battery full all the time lowers it's lifespan without even cycling. Storing a lipo battery is best at 55-60% to allow some dischage but preserve capacity capability.
      Great question on keeping the battery at 80% to preserve LiPo life! Red and Blue 1000 (OLED) boards do this - they have a different motherboard (IRS-1001). I'm sure some day we can limit that.
      Using a LiPo that is 2200-2500 will not need a reset but will also not increase screen on time between charges. I suggest 2500 as the batteries degrade. If the Vita turns off before reaching critical %, the battery is dying. Tne reason why people with OG batteries die with a "50%" charge, the 5year old used OG battery has a lowered capacity and can't hold a charge.
      You can use any battery with a usable voltage between 3.6v and 4.2v! I was looking at different Samsung Note batteries for Li-ion as they last longer. Careful though, some 3rd part sellers sell LiPos in Li-Ion shells...
      Launcher - No. Only thing close is using a plugin to autoload one of the game launchers that doesn't have a game number cap. No CFW yet.
      Batteries lasting 2-3 years is how long I've noticed them reducing to 80% capacity which is when they are still safe but time to replace. The longer it degrades, the closer the annode and cathode get to shorting inside the battery due to the electrolyte slowly crossing over. Under 80% and the risk climbs higher.
      I'm currently using a battery that used to have 4000mAh capacity but now has under 3200 which was 80%. It must be replaced if it swells (gas inside) or smells like bubblegum. The risk of leaving 80% LiPos inside electronics I'd they may open and release their heat inside our circuitry destroying our device. :(
      I appreciate the questions, truly! I'm not a battery expert though, I'm trying to learn like you.

      @@anderxale1 Thanks for the response. I removed quite a few Lithium Ion and Polymer batteries from a bunch of old devices and have found a close to 13 year old Lithium Ion battery in an old Nokia N96 which is completely dead which I need to throw out. What's your experience with old Lithium Ion/Polymer batteries that might be lying around in a drawer or something? Do you think if you left dead batteries installed (permanent storage and never to be recharged) is a danger? It's hard to find definitive answers to these questions lol. I'd rather not have timed thermonuclear devices in my house lol.

    • @anderxale1
      @anderxale1  2 роки тому

      @@sonicray100 Sorry that I didn't get back to you. Lithium batteries eventually lose charge to turn on, then they go too low for a device to charge, and then they go into super low voltages. Usually in those voltages under 3V the battery will gas up. DON'T OPEN THE BATTERY'S PUFFY CASE or puncture through the battery as it CAN cause a fire. They really aren't that dangerous if you don't open or puncture them. They do have a little hole already if you smell bubble gum near them - still not dangerous unless you try to charge it. Check with your local disposal on how to get rid of lithium batteries. Stores like Best Buy in the states sometimes have a baattery recycle bin - just cover the leads with tape before whatever you are supposed to do in your location.

Was gonna drop off some at a store but they happened to stop that service just as I was thinking about it lol. Thanks for the response :).
