Seriously dude? "Reading"? Learn to read, am I right? You have lost all credibility in my eyes.

its pronounced Redding, I wouldn't lose sleep over someone's pointless correction.
Tenderloin! That’s awesome
@@stewiepid4385 OMG I can't .. stop .. laughing
Let's get to something more interesting, I'm curious on your analysis of Dani Filth's vocals. Most folks find his sound horrid, but I find his range phenomenal.
“It’s totally possible to sing while in different positions and he’s proven it.”
One time when I saw him perform with A Perfect Circle, he said he could smell the popcorn from the concession stand and wanted some. So someone got him popcorn. He proceeded to eat it while lying on his back and singing “The Outsider”-flawlessly. It was astonishing.
the outsider was recorded while eating popcorn, confirmed!
No kidding. Did a damned fine job WHILE holding a fan down.
ua-cam.com/video/dS41ost0pM8/v-deo.html
When I saw him with apc he said he could smell the weed 😂
Well, Maynard is an alien, so no surprises there
@Serial Killa they have done a fuck load of drugs and that's a known fact. You can thank drugs for most good music
*Stares at Maynard convulsing and twisted on stage*
"Such an interesting performer"
This comment. 😂😂😂😂😂😂 I love Maynard.
Haha, I thought the same thing. “Interesting” is certainly one way to put it.
I love your comment.
Understated nicely, wasn't it?
It could be worse, could always be Peter Gabriel dressed as an old man singing perverted lyrics.
This dude is giving out masterclasses with every video for free.
Daniel Antunovic exactly!
"There's gonna be some weird stuff going on sometimes."
Yep, welcome to a live Tool performance. Haha.
From k pop to Tool?! now that’s an eclectic taste in music, a true fan of the human voice.. respect!
citizendisguise Tool is my 2nd favourite band / group behind NIN. My 3rd favourite group is like either EXID or Red Velvet, lol. Sooooo appreciate his eclectic taste!
I feel like Maynard does not get enough credit. Tool and A Perfect Circle are both so, so good.
Puscifer too.
Maynard gets a heck of a lot of credit among those who feel the power and passion in his voice and music.
Oh that new APC CD is baaaaddd. I've never been so disappointed
Oh, yeah... It's definitely a departure, to put it kindly, lol. But there are a *few good tracks!
I actually really love that CD XD
Straight to the point. Most people talk for a hour before they start the video. #respect lol
But this is one of my favorites by Tool. Maynard is a God. Good choice.
i saw nearly every reaction video from sober and this was under the top 3 for sure, if not the best...
I think his posture reflects his anxiety and the anxiety in the lyrics. Great performance!
His posture and movements mimic the character in the "Sober" music video.
Acid may have been involved
His posture is supposed to reflect that of a quivering addict. The context of the lyrics are important, here.
I think people try to hard to read the antics of maynard and the rest of tool. Especially maynard. Heard him in an interview talking about lateralus and the fibonacci sequence etc. he basically said that was silly and the fibonacci happens naturally in everything. I think they're the ultimate trolls.
@@jakedonald7934 "Overthinking, Overanalyzing separates the body from the mind."
“I’m gonna do that with my hair- probably next week...” 😂
Rocking the male romper before it was popular
I think they were popular as pajamas in the mid-90s, so he's basically wearing PJs on stage.
Pajamas popular in the 90s!? Oh geez, I'd pay money for a history book written by you.
*Romper-style* pajamas were popular. I don't think you "redd" my comment too carefully.
Anna Riordan Where you even born when this concert happened? The clothing he is wearing is not at all “trendy” for the time, nor are they pajamas. He is wearing a union suit with the legs cut off. Think 1880s full body men’s underwear.
Romper Rock ! 👍🎵🎸
I was at that Reading gig when I was 18. Down the front. A quarter century later and I was listening to the new Tool album in the car this afternoon wondering when all my hair went white. :)
I have never related to something so much in my entire 38 years of existing! Rock that white hair and keep rocking my dude🤘🤘🤘🤘
And what an awesome thing it is to have musicians like Tool who can feed your soul for decades. I owe so much to so many artists in so many genres from David Bowie to Gojira to Tool to Dead Kennedys to Nine Inch Nails to Seether to Elvis Costello to Warren Zevon and so many more. The language of music is far more powerful than language.
Part of me would love to see 'Maynard reacts to voice teacher reacts to Tool Sober'
I'd also love to hear from Maynard exactly how wasted he was in this performance, imagine being that high and still making that sound! Love it
@@cheekyb71 Yeah, no. He wasn't under the influence of any drugs
It would be ......a perfect circle
Wanna see it wanna wanna wanna...although..would he?
I would cut my sack off to see that🤘🤘🤘🤘
Maynard has always been one of those voices to me, like Chino Moreno, where intentionally sounding slightly off works. Most can't pull it off and only end up sounding off key or flat. Them coming together for the Deftones song Passenger is just amazing.
I just told my husband about this video and he was like "Maynard is ALWAYS off key." Would not accept that he isnt... I'm just confused why he doesn't understand
I love that song so much. Their voices together is beautiful
Agreed 100%. I often wonder why they never did it again after that. The energy in that booth must've been unreal.
Yeah please react to Chino Moreno Next!
Yeah he should critique Chino! :)
My heart stopped when I saw this notification!!!! I love Tool so damn much.
So maynard didn't use to turn his back or hide during his shows like this one as it is an older show he now hides himself in the dark from the lighting as one reddit poster explains it: Why is Maynard kept in the dark while on stage? His lighting guy told me this.
...Posted this in another thread, but I thought it might be worth sharing with other tool fans.
I worked a show a while ago that a Perfect Circle was headlining, and I spoke at length with the lighting director. I don't remember his name, but he had worked with Maynard in tool as well as APC. This was during the Thirteenth Step tour, Year of the Rabbit was the opener. I voiced the question: Why keep him in the dark? The band was using almost the same stage setup, Maynard was upstage left on a riser next to Freese's kit.
The answer I got was interesting, and I remember seeing an interview where he spoke about it, so I think it's the truth.
Apparently Maynard has an eye issue which manifests itself in a sensitivity to bright lights and flashes. It got so bad that it came close to ending his ability to perform live. When the lights get flashing and really going, it causes an almost vertigo-ish reaction that can lead to his passing out. And that would be bad.
But I remembered watching the show and seeing some really awesome moving, flashing lights, which would seem to counter what the lighting guy had just told me about. He saw my puzzled look and explained further how it works.
Maynard had a signal to tell the lighting guy if it was too much, and if it was ok to hit it. His microphone stand. If it got to be too much, Maynard would move his mic stand to the front corner of his riser, and once the feelings passed, he should remove it, to signal all systems go.
That, and he wears sunglasses, which helps.
This essentially meant that the lighting designer had to have two shows written before the tour started, that could be blended back and forth, so he could disk back the intensity of what was hitting Maynard's eyes while still keeping up the consistency of the light show for the audience. (Spoiler, concert lights are not improvised at the show, sorry... I guess some people didn't know that. Weeks and weeks of planning and programming involved there).
I thought that was damn interesting.
Very interesting, thanks for sharing that!
LEON HOUSE: LET'S PLAY MOBILE GAMES Thanks for the info!!!!
More then likely from all the mkultra programming...
Muy interesante.
@daimon hellstrom
You literally don't know if his story is true or isn't. You have your own fucking truth and you take it as gospel without confirmation just like him.
It's pretty cool to hear someone putting the way Maynard's voice makes me feel, into words. From a technical perspective. Just an unbelievably amazing artist. Great video!
Maynard is one of my all time favorite vocalist because of all the reasons you said. He seems so in control, it's so effortless, and his range is astounding. Just an fyi, he has never gotten over that anxiety of performing in front of a crowd. He now stands at the back of the stage, shrouded in darkness, and let's the band take the lead. He did learn to cope with a little more over the years, but as his popularity grew, I guess he felt like it was okay for him to not be front and center. It's amazing to see live because instead of focusing on this one person, you now focus on the other band members and be amazed at the complexity and beauty that they are able to produce. I love these videos! Please do Corey Taylor! Either From Can to Can't or Song #3 acoustic. Both amazing displays of one end of his range.
The funny thing to me is Keenan isn't that great from a technical standpoint.
But he makes up for that 100% by singing from the bottom of his heart. Dude has SOUL.
He said on JRE that he stays in the darkness because stage lights messed his eyes up really bad, and he gets super crazy headaches from them now so he stays in the darkness
I agree about corey taylor. From can to cant would be amazing
also there's a great video of the recording of From Can to Can't
Obviously it’s his stick for tool you have seen pucifer are perfect circle play right.....
Maynard's voice is EVERYTHING!!! 🤗💜👏👍
Love how he's quietly singing along
You articulate yourself better than anyone I’ve heard discussing the human voice. You also look like an extra from battlefield earth
Chris M I cannot unsee that now.
I need to listen to more Tool. Keep the reactions to metal songs coming :)
I started like a year ago and i didn't listen to anything else for about a month. A small warning. ( it was worth it so go for it)
I agree with the metal/rock genre. Maybe some Godsmack or Disturbed?
Bekamorphosis yep, you do. Enjoy the ride
Yes please do more Rock / Metal songs. I would be interested in hearing your response to David Lee Roth Van Halen. I personally never thought he was a good "singer" he may be a charismatic frontman but not a great singer. try the song "Aint Talkin Bout Love"
I ran into the same thing: Heard some of their stuff (really like how they feature the bass, and the technicality in the music). What did it for me, was a cover of The Pot played at like a country club or something, that Danny Carry sat it on. For some reason, that song just pushed me over the edge and i started listening to more of their stuff (link to the cover below).
[Danny was at the same fund raiser, and heard a band was going to play The Pot, and asked to sit in with them]
ua-cam.com/video/-JWdh-F1xdQ/v-deo.html
Love the variety in your latest vids.
Also, your format in general is perfect. So many UA-camrs drag out intros/outros/main content with fluff for video length. You're straight to the point and have no wasted time in your videos.
Subbed and look forward to more!
Yes!!
I second this comment. I subbed because no fluff, engaging personality, and great variety.
@@fawn46n2 I subbed pretty much for the same reason
Succinct and easy to understand the technical difficulties of singing and integrating harmonic resonance!
When you have to PEE but the band makes you sing anyway...
LOL, @Chad Ryan, MJK doesn't do drugs, he drinks wine. He has a vinyard. Although, the song DOES say, "Why can we NOT be sober?" he never mentions getting high in any of his work (instead, some of his songs, like Ænemia, lambast people who get high."
That is definitely a drugged out stance. Most likey a psychedelic of some sort
No he wasn't high and he would often do physical poses and movements like you see here in the 90s
@@matthewsavoie1506 he looks like he is high AF, but he sings on point, so I wouldn't bet on either side
@@KitWriter Never talk about getting high? Have you heard third eye? Or any of a perfect circle's "thirteenth step?" I am not completely sure of Maynard's stand on drugs, but he has sung quite a lot about getting high man, and furthermore being addicted to getting high. I don't think this guy would help write an entire album about getting off drugs if he hadn't had some experience with addiction. Also, alcohol is drug, so yeah.
I've seen them live. At Rock im Park in Nuremberg, Germany, 2002. They were fucking amazing. 46&2 was a seminal experience to see performed live.
Every single time I've seen Tool live they were phenomenal. I've only seen a perfect circle once back with NIN and it was amazing too.
I met Maynard while buying some of his wine and the dude was super nice and kind of shy.
OMG, you did a Tool song, I was SOOO hyped to see this notification in my email, I could NOT WAIT to click! Awesome reaction and breakdown. Maynard is one of my favorite male vocalists. I like to karaoke, well, love to, and doing Tool tunes is the highlight of my night. You HAVE to see them live, they are amazing. They are true musicians, they're not members of a rock band, they take their art, their craft, very seriously, and it comes through in their live shows.
His voice sounds even better live. The whole bands solid af
Adam jones is a guitar wizard that doesn’t get enough credit.
I went to one live performance in NY or NJ. I don't remember exactly where. The sound was shit. But apparently that arena is known for shit sound.
And here’s the thing. He wasn’t using the correct posture if he was he’d be legend
@@HendersonHinchfinch dude hes in a band with MJK and Carey too his name is really well known
Cameron Archer, You missed my point
I agree Maynard's got amazing "tone" and vocal control. He doesn't strain on the high notes. He doesn't strain unless he wants to.
I don't think he became more comfortable with the audience over time though.
When I saw him in 1996 he was expressive, marching around in a circle and facing the audience sometimes without really making eye contact.
When I saw him 10 years later he was "in the shadows" like they wanted to replace the band with lights.
Thanks for your unique analysis.
I've always loved his performance in this song, because it sounds almost strained but not, and I comes across as desperation, which fits the theme of the song perfectly.
Tool is special as hell. The complexity of their songs is ASTOUNDING.
Yasssssss 🤗
I love Tool, but complexity? Nah
Douglas Todd People think that 5/8 and 7/8 time signatures are complex lmfao. Try Meshuggah, buckos
@Sam Johnson
Please do a video on Devin Townsend and his live video "Deadhead live at the Royal Albert Hall"
Douglas Todd I am talking about the instrumental usage, not just the tempo.

Absolutely agree. They are incredible live.
I'm going to see APC in November and I am geeked the eff out x.x
haven't they all disbanded? Tool disbanded 100%
I love how you sing along smiling. You can see how much you love music and how the music just takes you like you feel it so much. I do the same but I can't sing for anything xx
I watch to a WHOLE LOT of vocal coach reactions to this clip and the information you present by far is the best. Well played.

T00L IS NOT ‘ROCK’ nor is it ‘METAL’.
T00L’s music cannot be classified....
Err. Yes it can. It can quite easily be classified as both rock and metal, due to them having songs fitting both genres. They do fit better in on the metal genre.
I gasped when I got this notification! No idea if Sam even saw my Maynard request but I feel heard anyway.
What a thoughtful and expressive analysis. Thank you.

Just saw them at Download UK. Incredible.
I love that you analyze all kinds of music!
saving his plug for the last 15 seconds... a true gentleman
MJK from my experience will seemingly always have stage anxiety I’ve seen tool and apc a lot from 1996 until recently and he is always at least off center stage and sometimes is barely even visible with that said still one of my top five bands/artists to see live
It takes a special kind of person to confidently go up in front of 50k+ people and expose a piece of their soul in one of the most intimate ways possible...i for one, could never do it, even if i was a decent singer
Same dude, I saw him and he was so far from the front of the stage. I think he’s good nonetheless, I’d still watch that mans weird silhouette
Same. I've seen both Tool and APC, he's he's usually off center in the back. Whatever works for him. He did take center to submit a dude and kept singing while on the ground. Priceless...
I'm so jealous...You should take me with you next time!!! 😉 Until recently I've had a boring spouse who didn't want to see them, but wouldn't let me go with anyone else. ☹️ So now that he's gone, I'm going to try to see APC while they're touring (thinking maybe Denver or Austin) and hopefully Tool will tour again in the near future! 😁
In an interview, Maynard said that he likes to turn his back to the audience so that the emphasis is on the whole sound, not just the singing
My man, you’ve made a subscriber out of me, great perspective on things, you know what you’re talkin for about for sure. I like your non biased approach to music, and your ability to explain your point so clearly, it’s a rare gift fairly appreciated.
I love hearing other singers fangirling/boying over Maynard's amazing talent. Great video!
I LOVE TOOL! His voice is smooth and powerful. Such an effortless flow. Beautiful beautiful beautiful. Love watching you and your passion for music.
I subscribed after 1 minute of the first video I watched of yours. Love how technical you are with your explanations, while at the same time making it easy for those of us who are not classically trained to understand. Congratulations on your growing viewer base...you definitely deserve it.
I’m with you, Denise - loved Sam’s technical tho relaxed approached from the get go. Keep at it, Sam. Might have to get some of your coaching insights myself. 🤔🦊🙂
Oh! This is my favourite life performance of sober!! I used to watch this on replay..Thanks for this!
Dude this has been in my recommended for months. Finally got around to it and instantly subscribed. You’ve taught me so much in one day that I felt, but never knew. I’ve taught myself everything through feel. You are my introduction to actual physical understanding and I just want to thank you. Also, not gonna lie I was very skeptical about your personality at first...usually people who come off so happy are very artificial and I can’t stand them to be totally honest. I find they hide behind a veil of light to cover the darkness below...but after falling down a rabbit hole of your videos I can see you are a very genuine and passionate person. You are one of the few who can pull off this intensely happy persona...I can see it in your eyes, you aren’t hiding behind it. You’re passionate, and that’s beautiful. Beyond all of this music shit, you seem to be a good person...and that is truly all that matters. Much love and thank you!
Maynard is so talented. Really enjoying your content Sam!
New earphones? And now in both ears? Awesome!
Tool deserve it.
Splashed out now he’s monetised 🤣
Love this video. I also love the fact you were singing along
Man UA-cam has played a ton of these reactions to Sober for me, and I just have to say- you actually have something to say that's interesting and speaks to the voice as a tool.
thanks for reacting to all forms of music rather than just one genre like some voice teachers do.
Sam, I know you can pull off the haircut, but do you think you can pull off the pink, one piece, thermal underwear look? LOL!
He could totally rock the pink long Johns!
Actually, is Maynard wearing a jumper? I thought they were thermal underwear, too, but ...
Maynard keeps a tight schedule, nap time is directly after concert time.
Jymio Jammer LOL, so it's a matter of practicality? I like it!
Jymio Jammer This is the best comment I’ve seen all day

I second that.
My favorite AIC song and performance.
Actually...I think "Rain When I Die" would be a better choice or my favorite.... "God Am" both live versions are amazing!
Omg please do one for Layne but one where he gives it. Rooster or man in the box maybe? Even better would be reacting to him in AIC and then react to their glam rock days before getting signed.

Hopefully you'll get around to Pearl Jam Black unplugged, AIC Nutshell & Steel Heart She's Gone acoustic. These are great singers & I can't wait to hear your take on their vocals!!!
That's funny you mention Black, I was literally humming/singing that at work yesterday - Eddie Vedder's voice had gone through so many different stages, dudes been around for decades now, he would definitely be an awesome case study for Sam to break down (some sort of "adapting to changes over time or other events that alter/change/affect your singing voice etc" kind of approach perhaps)
Keep it up Sam, your clear, concise explanations & breakdowns are greatly appreciated 👌
Learned a lot watching this. Thank you! Keep it up (:
