Tucked in the Black Hills of Yavapai County, Arizona, Jerome has long attracted intrepid characters. In the late 1800s, prospectors descended on the historic town looking to capitalize on its rich copper mines. Over a hundred years later, a different type of pioneer arrived: Maynard James Keenan. The Tool, Puscifer and A Perfect Circle frontman has carved out a uniquely anti-rock-star life in this rugged terrain, filled with winemaking, farming and community building. For two days this past July, Keenan extended a very special invitation to Revolver to join him during this summer's grape harvest. In Episode 1 of our multi-part series, he reveals how his work in Jerome helps create the friction that ignites his creativity.
How does this guy have enough time to work with three bands, farm and make wine, run restaurants , own shops, brazilian jiu - jitsu, live a normal life, be successful in everything. This is by far one of the most intelligent people i've ever seen
A lot of people who work with him, that's the secret
@@shitmultiverse1404 Yeah definitely what you said, it's even in The Humbling River! He certainly has as level of focus and discipline that not a lot others have, as well. To be able to organize the people who work with him...
like the other guy said, alot of people help him .
With everything that he does, he doesn't live a normal life. He lives a fulfilling life, and he is, obviously, incredibly disciplined and focused. That is the thing we need to learn for ourselves, discipline and focus. The rest comes as it comes.
Because it takes a team. He knows this.
He’s cracked the code for staying creative and satisfied. Participate in the world, nature, and be present.
I aspire to be even 1/10000th as effective a human as he is. I'm failing miserably.
Money helps, but he found himself some time ago now.
@@SeaOfMadness If you compare yourself to others you will always be miserable. WHy do it to yourself? think about what you have just written.
You know you've made it when you buy your own vineyard. This guys an absolute Tool.
@@SeaOfMadness I am as well, but also listen to the advice of not comapring yourself to others. Mr. Keenan has lived an extraordinary life, and it's all his! For you (and me, as well!) let's find a small dream or goal, and try to fulfill that. Then choose another and fulfill it. And then keep going! :)
Maynard is a modern day renaissance man no doubt. He most assuredly is maxing out his human potential. Very few people are able to harness their abilities like this man has, he’s wise far beyond his years.
Famous people usually become addicted to drugs because nothing else reaches the high they are used to. I am so happy he found something to keep him going. I love this man.
"Whether I'm relevant or not is irrelevant" - Maynard
@Eerimen Bzej Oh my god, you are embarassing yourself big time here.
@Eerimen Bzej Calling a sideshow freak a sideshow freak is not a great insult. But yeah, you're welcome. You're like those Washington ladies in the 80's, terrified of heavy metal records :D
@Eerimen Bzej Yeah, you totally mentioned "gaslighting" there.
@Eerimen Bzej YOU are the one who is the tool.
@Eerimen Bzej Your right so I'm gonna say what's what. Your a pontificating ignorant buffoon. I swear it's people like you thank make intelligent people say. WHAT THE FUCK. Just sayin
I'm lazy, so I live vicariously through Maynard
at least you don't need to watch things down...
fretstride2 Dude... That honestly made me feel bad because of how true that is for me. 😔🖤
Stop being lazy
this is so good
Watch him and want more for yourself.

i was expecting more Maynard, but I got less Maynard, which I guess in its own weird way is probably actually More Maynard.
Maynard keeping it real by still working like the rest if us, difference is, he's his own boss, get those hands dirty, keep that ego in check, and keep that creativity flowing with multiple projects...
Pleroma Oblivion fuck Ted
Pleroma Oblivion you sound bitter what MJK refused to sign a autograph for you?
Leo Perez, I got an autograph from Maynard once. It looks like the McDonald's M. He is an asshole to his fans, it took me a while to understand that he has to be. I saw tool last summer, while the other three where bowing and saying thank you to the fans, he just ran off stage. No wave or anything. But, the whole thing is, the other three don't get as much attention as he does. They had spotlights on them pretty much the whole show. He was never once spotlighted. He has his reasons for being an ass.
Maybe he is a shy guy I don't know because I don't know him personally but, if you feel that way that's your opinion I like tools music really don't care about the people personality! Just saying hope you have yourself a good week sir and I mean it.
Leo Perez, like I said, I understand why he does those things. I'm not trying to dog him or nothing. But, thank you. I truly wish the best for you and yours. Cheers!
Gotta love a man who drives his own forklift.
he had to get someone to figure out how to use it though =\, he doesn't like to read instructions
They are fun to drive. Keeping it real 💯
cherry picker, not forklift
thanks for the clarification

Now I got it. True words
It’s a wink from the past he threw at us.
Best song on this album. Can't stop listening to it. Help me!
Cringe. Happening. In comments. Relevant.
Maynard is consistent in his ideas and ideals. Everything he says he mirrors in his lyrics. Listen to his podcast with Joe Rogan, the one where he announced Fear Inoculum. The things he says sounds like he was reading the lyrics from the album
I want to meet him so damn bad. And I live in arizona. Hopefully one day I can shake his hand. He's a major inspiration
They say don’t meet your heroes for a reason. He doesn’t want to meet you and would probably hate you if he did. SorryZ
@@RM-jb2bvwell I don’t think he’ll hate you, but he doesn’t want to be worshipped or admired.
He doesn’t like meeting fans very much
A million Maynards made this possible. This one just gets to be heard. Very inspiring person for sure.
jason mastrandrea pp
Beautiful way to put it. I totally agree that it was inspiring... especially the part when he describes David Bowie not being able to continue on, but how an endeavor like his wine creation continues to intrigue people into investing their lives toward something new... That made sense to me.... Like you said, a million Maynards made this possible. I think you are one of the "Maynards".
jason mastrandrea deep dawg
jason mastrandrea well said!!
were in new-ish territory here with all the easily accessible possibilities that a person can do with their life. because of that, In the past i've felt uncomfortable after learning about Maynard because i have similar interests and approaches to those interests. Despite that, I was 20 when I first learned of Maynard and was already heading in these multiple directions that I am now, so it's not as though I'm a copy cat. Contemplating the possibility of me ego seeking to identify with "someone above the ground"lol has been a topic to some degree. I'm good with it now for the time being. I do lots of stuff that has nothing to do with Wine or Music or Arizona. I would like to and plan to live in Arizona for more than a few reasons though.
Good to see he found his Arizona Bay

He's waiting for Jerome to be beachfront property. Then he'll have a seaside vineyard. Lol
SeMaJ BI this comment is underrated
He is just a simple workaholic lol, however you must admire him, how he keeps that creativity flowing through what he writes and creates through his bands it’s insane 🛐 I really admire him as a musician and human
I agree with you, and I guess the question is just what is the work that you're addicted to that makes that good or bad. I saw his kids with him (and the whole band) on tour, and his wife runs the shop(s) in Jerome. We know he likes his privacy regarding his family, but it seems he involves them, and it's all jam packed with life lessons. Worse things to be than a workaholic in his case?
Wow, I'm a gardener and have been one forever; The plants on this compound are *insanely* healthy looking. I'm mystified at how they keep all those plants so perfect looking! Especially in such an arid climate!
A fuckload of water
You should take a trip to Jerome. Arizona is arid overall, comparative to the rest of the nation; but many areas are not as arid desert as you may believe.
Yeah I live about 4 hours south from there and it's not as arid as it is barely an hour north. The mountains you see at the beginning are a big reason. My town translates to Mountain View.
He has a water purification system that helps the plants flourish. He is in high desert so it's not as arid as the valleys are. I'm working on my first successful garden and it's all thanks to a Tucson Gardner who's come up with her own seeding and planting timeline and it's amazing!

Humbling River seems to be perfect for this video.
At 6:29 he called a wine product CHUPACABRA !!!!
My Gosh you have to love this man.

I was wondering if I was only one caught the mighty goat sucker reference 😍
I wouldn't even know what to say. His music has had such an impact on me I can't even put it into words.
He's a rock God

This man will end up one of our greatest icons.
Being Australian, it fills me with pride that Maynard sought advice from Penfolds winery in South Australia about growing and production requirements for his own vineyards in Arizona. Only one sommelier in Melbourne sells his wine.
He realizes the base, visceral part of man is still as important as the cerebral. You need struggle and pain just as much as pleasure and success to be whole and continue growing.
Struggle is the key for sure. It teaches will power and perseverance and proves to person how strong they really are.
Brilliant. I am a bigger fan of Maynard than I originally thought.
I just lost my dad. Listening to Maynard brings tears to my eyes because how they see the world and what it means to leave a legacy is almost identical. Thank you.
I respect this man! He’s a MILITARY VETERAN!!!
PEACE. TEXAS NAVY VETERAN
🇺🇸⚓️
I’m sitting here watching this while eating a cup of ice cream. Thanks to Maynard, I now have this urge to eat healthier and be productive with my creative craft.
Maynard keeps changing, moving and evolving. His music from all three band's represents that flow...
Relevance is important and making things grow and producing for himself allows growth...🙏🏻🤘
Slowlikehoney Too If you are born super smart, you get all the benefits of life, when you are born dumb,God walks on top of you.
Pleroma Oblivion, "what do you know".
Maynard.you are a God. You feel. You have grace and knowledge that goes beyond time. AMEN.
His music in Tool? Maynard has NOTHING to do with the music in Tool. Lyrics on the other hand....
He's a dude that figured life out.
Very inspirational and humbling!! I love how Maynard is one of few artists still connected with reality.
This guy is just something else. The way he views life, the effort he puts in preety much everything he does and the final results of his dedication are as bright and clear as a quartz crystal. He's not just an artist or wine maker or a musician. He's also a very good teacher in life. A guy well worth looking up to. Thank you Maynard!
Maynard has such an inspirational vision. Way down to earth.
Sheesh... I regret being piss drunk at the APC show...
I have the same regret but instead of APC it was a Roger Waters concert and I was freaking out on shrooms
What happened if you don't mind me asking? I would think a Roger Waters concert would be the pinnacle of settings to do shrooms in.
I happens man
The Dog It can be overwhelming. All of the people, lights, heavy music. It can turn into a bad trip quickly.
first of all why get that drunk at a show that costs a shit ton of money to see? secondly if it was waters the wall tour you had a damn good experience
This guy is deep.
I'm 54 and once you stop you die. I've seen many times throughout my life. Stay busy at what ever you like to do and always keep searching for serenity. Maynard is the epitome of that philosophy. My favorite thing to do is solve problems. There's always a problem and it will never stop. I dont drink but I do indulge in psychedelics from time to time.
I’m in love with Maynard! Everything about him drives me wild. 🔥🔥🔥🎤
When all is said and done this is one man that can meet his maker and honestly say I wasted no time and I did my best , not many people will be able to make that claim.
Yes,you are right.and so sad everyone has potential to do the same in there lives God gives us a certain time on this Earth to love what you where called to do.and people just waste that.living a full life is a great thing.👍🌟🎉

Maynard is so intelligent and has a way of looking at things so perfectly and beautifully. I could listen to this man all day, every day. ❤💙💜
How did rocker become such a Sage? Maynard is one wise man.

He's so right about how to build on your legacy (no matter who you are). Having something that lives beyond you - that is useful and Godly and good, is the only legacy to build.
@Kenneth Edmiston I feel like some people have children to serve their ego.
Two thoughts... At the beginning of the movie "The Descendants" with George Clooney, there is a quote - "Leave your kids enough money so that they can do something, but not so much that they can do nothing." I find that idea appropriate for this and, the word I think Maynard is looking for is "stewardship." What we leave for those that come after us is more important than what we achieve for ourselves.
GAY !
wysiwygsd great quote, and I agree about stewardship. The individualism of American culture is beautiful in many ways but I think that there are key pieces of good and moral lives that we’ve lost due to this. I think it’s possible to still be unusually individualistic and get some of that back. The way we treat our elders, the lack of focus on what we leave our kids, these things need to improve. I think we can do that without suffocating collectivism.
Well said.
A very gifted and naturally talented man. Fair play, all those gifts, yet humble, calm, and patient. Gets my vote all day long.
1:15 mark...........fast forward to "Invincible" in 2019 from the new Fear Inoculum album lyrics: "Warrior struggling
To remain relevant
Warrior struggling
To remain consequential"
Planned it.
Not just an artist, but I get your point Mr Keenan. I left my military career 18 months ago and put myself on a small farm and while I don’t have the capability for the music projects, my life is better Han I could’ve imagined at this point and weep for each and every soul in a subdivision. My chickens, pigs, horses and vegetables fulfill me and you were an inspiration, so thanks.
I want to build a factory and get rich in what is left of our free market. I will not hire anybody who lives in a tiny house. :)
Actually, I have my own business, and what I love about it the most? It is MINE, and I make all the decisions, (and I can make more money than any union "worker" in the world). Can't have that as an employee.
Maynards music, wine, jujitsu, and many other endeavors have helped him grow a strong love of community which will spread his legacy for many enjoyable years to come. Maynard is a teacher worth subscribing to.. NOT worshipping like a God, that's weird.
Well done, Mate.
You are the sum of everything you have done and said right up to this moment.
Maynard, you sum it up for me. From the first moment someone handed me an old CD and said, "here, you like that angry music, I think you will like this." And it shook my very soul. I looked around to see who has been listening to my private thoughts.
TOOL, the "thinking" man's metal.
Thank you.
He's a cool guy. I'm happy that he's found things to fulfill his life 😊
0:00 How I was introduced to Puscifer. One of the greatest experiences
Maynard is such an inspiration, I almost feel ashamed for finding out about him so recently, few years ago. Ive grown to have so much respect and admiration for him, would love to volunteer some work for whatever he needs lol, man is awesome.
Edit: also, huge thanks to Revolver for posting this!
DiggingDeeper Daily mepg2
You can volunteer and be his tool 🔧 lmAo
After loving and following his music since the early 90s I'd never imagined he'd be the man he is today. And greatful for his physical work and he's still put out great music
I could listen to him talk for years
You Maynard James Keenan are one of the greatest minds ever to grace this earth. I will always look up to you, you are a great human.
4:21 that's very rare. And I not mean feeding a bird with your hand. That happiness. That smile.. very rarely seen by us fans. ❤️
It's a fake bird.
he literally has falcons killing the birds. Hahaha.
Who wouldve thought when those first sounds of tool hit the main streem air waves that almost 30 years later he would still be this creative down to earth (in his own way) genius
One of the most inspiring, innovative, uncompromising and astronomically talented creative minds of modern times.
Everything he does is art, just as art is everything. An individual so clearly and intently in tune with the nature of the universe and with the nature of his own being that he’s probably as enlightened as we can hope to be in this age.
The fact that knowing he would be rolling his eyes and feeling irritated by this comment is testament to that.
Keep it up Maynard we love it ...down to earth like the rest of us....u rock!
Very interesting insight into Maynard’s other endeavors! Seems like a genuinely good guy
really?..a genuinely good guy?..the dude is anti fan...talking about his wine he is genuine..everything else to him is just fodder..dont get me wrong..respect is still there..the man is genius..but still..not a good guy in my option only
frank jasutis he only talks bad about Tool fans, but let's be honest here tool fans are mostly idiots

How so?
Wtf are ya'll talkin about......i ran into maynard at the VORTEX in Atlanta and we talked for 10 to 15 mins,he was in town for a perfect circle show, he's very cool and friendly...don't talk shit about what you don't fuckin know...fuckin douche bags...
Sometimes I'm a bit harsh on Maynard, but at the end of the day he remains to be quite an interesting human being indeed.
Console the art given at acception, blinded in mother's arms piece together the past I developed the voice and say father
Does it make him cry when you're, like, really harsh on him?
Kudos my man. Brilliant.
No one cares what you think. Least of all Maynard
Gotta love critics. So aware of their own self worth!
I watched this when it first came out. I was so impressed and still am. Good music, great wines. Bravo Mr. Keenan. 🤘🤘
This man knows how to live life the right way.
How Maynard puts things in perspective about life makes me really think.I appreciate his art hope he keeps excelling in the way he has evolved throughout the years.
Man, what a well-spoken individual.
Hey Maynard, I am a cider maker/apple grower here in MN and have a great family and a day job. I share your views on creating community and thinking about future generations. You are spot on, the struggle is real and the struggle is worth it. If in MN sometime stop by and we can share a cider.
Trying to grow grapes for wine is an ever-present reminder of how little control we ultimately have. It's a constant exercise in knowing when to manage things and when to step away and let nature do what it will.
Maynard is an inspiring guy I feel he has helped me push myself in a similar way he pushes himself, since I was about 14 I have revisited all the music the lyrics change meaning with my time or situation, i feel like the music alone has pushed me mentally, physically and spiritually over the last 15 years, thank you Maynard and your fellow musicians.
Cal L. I love your comment. And I usually dislike comments telling the planet , "this is how I feel..." lol.
The word you're searching for though, is, "Timeless" .
When words you've read or remembered seem to change meaning dependent on where you are in life, that is a message that is Timeless. Some words are true regardless of time... Most of humankind's best knowledge is. Congratulations on your personal growth ! Spread the knowledge
Cincinnatus, your greatness precedes you. I expected yourself to fade as you grew old, but by your love of the land, your greatness grew tenfold.
I listen to Tool everyday and hear something new sounds, notes etc. in all there songs everytime they are one of the best bands ever hands down.
Your story inspires me. I appreciate, and am proud of you. I don’t know you, but you’ve put so much of yourself out into this world it feels like I do in a way. I can identify with things you’ve talked about. I love everything you do. ☺️ Thank you for sharing so much of yourself with the rest of us. It means a lot to so many.
I love you.
We need more of this mindset.
I dont know if you read comments on here mr. Keenan. I appreciate you. Your music. I think what you're doing is way cool man. You're insight on life is sharp. Not everyone figures out how to tap into that like you do. Cool video man. Hope to see more. And btw. Pucifer.... man you nailed it. You all do great! Thanx man.
Always knew this about Maynard, many don't know he graduated top of his class at West point and is an expert Marksman. Tool has always been my favorite band since I first heard them back when they started I'm 53 now and still listen to at least one tool song everyday
I’ve never seen another vocalist put as much emotion into a song as Maynard, he will always be relevant!
ONCE AGAIN JAMES , YOU HAVE SO PERFECTLY PUT INTO WORDS MY PERSPECTIVE AND PASSION THAT FUELS MY BEATING HEART.
YOU SEE WHAT OTHERS CANT OR REFUSE TO. THANK YOU FOR BEING♥
Nookstar Elliott omg lol
Maynard mostly likely hates you for ass kissing.
Rather hard to find a celebrity that is aptly described as well rounded. Refreshing actually.
Some words that convey how much of a fan I am, while also showing everyone how I "get it".
We are lucky as people to have him as a guidance source, he gets it, like truly gets it, so much can be learned and taught from that.
Maynard is a great example of what Abraham Maslow described as a self actualized being.
This entire series is really great.
I straight up love Maynard!! Just a great guy all around. I would love to come to his vineyard and see what all he has done with the Merkin, and just chill with him would be so AWESOME!!
WE ❤YOU MJK!!! You have helped me so much with your music in so many ways that I cannot even begin to describe it.
THANK YOU BROTHER!!!
Thanks Maynard. It’s always about resonating with your people. You do your stuff and I’ll do mine. We’ll have the same result.
It’s really refreshing to know that I never walk alone, so thank you.
You are the coolest artist ever..........with tool and now a perfect circle. I wish i was in your circle i can play piano and can drive a forklift. But I'm really an electrician
One of the most intelligent people on the face of the earth. They’ll never a better band then Tool.
Words cannot describe the feels to be had if met in person. I have always known the reason his personality/persona is so attracting is because he is different than what we are used to on this planet. Hearing Keenan speak about such things will always resonate with the right mind and soul to whomever listens. Dont stay in the clouds for too long, ladies and gents.
So good to hear an artist in the 21st century bring up the concept of being an active link in the chain between the past and future. While I have no doubt that Maynard has a good understanding of the problems this world faces, he is living as if what he does in the present will have a positive impact on the future regardless how bad that future might be. Such a breath of fresh air in a world that has become so focused on an ever present now and nothing else. Leave a legacy, a positive one.
Monotony kills! Awesome 😎 keep inspiring.
I love this guy.
You are so right! Thank you for actually saying and living the struggle!!!
I find following this man's posts & reading the comments to be the best entertainment I've ever had & lots of knowledge along the way. I will be recommending this to all my friends looking for something interesting to 'watch'. Not joking. This is like the most interesting college lecture in the world & it evolves & grows.
I feel he is talking about Fear Inoculum subject, he was talking about it a year before it came out

All I can say is WOW!!! all respect for Maynard.
Maynard is a man with much wisdom, insight, passion, and depth. 💝 this dude.
Hearing them I was holy shit, reading about him , and learning his life and mine was one n the same, i experienced it in 1971, I think his was n 1976, the connection through music, it's a beautiful thing, being cut from the same cloth knowing your not alone ,
This man is a fucking genius 🙌
We love you Maynard ❤️
Finding the art in the labor of making it has to be one of the most satisfying experience one can have.
Tiny monsters. Today's soul opening song. I love that Maynard is here with us sharing his experience with his life. He's a treasure.
This was inspiring and I felt good after watching it :)
Right on. Attain our absolute
Good for him to create a legacy, and to understand the importance of work. He seems very level headed and not burnt out rock star.
I'm a welder and I believe every weld I make is practice for the next. What I learn from Maynard.
