Wow. This is the most fluid, relaxed, and least awkward Maynard interview I’ve ever seen. Well done, Lars.
I think it's cuz they can relate to each other. They both have creative power over their bands. And yeah, this was an amazing chill interview
Probably due to mutual respect. However, the geniuses of our generation all seem to be very condescending to those they believe are beneath them or those that who ask questions that the geniuses deem juvenile and/or simplistic.
As the others have said: The Joe Rogan podcast with Maynard is reallly relaxed and a great listen. About 3 hours if I recall.
Joe Rogan Experience has a great 2+hour interview or "chat" really, with Maynard.
True i feel like joe rogans muscles made him uncomfortable
You should get an award for conducting a Maynard interview with success.
He's been on Jo Rogan's podcast twice and they are both really good!
Jérémy Kervran absolutely!
@@alaincharbonneau747 Joe Rogan wasn't asking the right questions ever with Keenan.
@@alaincharbonneau747 rogan is one of the biggest morons, a charlatan pseudointellectual who is responsible for dumbing masses of people. it's a shame he gets such quality guests.
@@knowyourenemy50 yeah, he's an average mind reaching a vast ocean of people over the world wide web and people just eat it up like pigs.
Maynard's talking voice is so calming...
So calming indeed to put me to sleep since it's so calming
I am listening to this before bed.
he has sounded like that for the past 40+ years I've known him.......
Ya mamas calming
I love his voice I could honestly listen to him talk all day no matter the topics
My two favourite bands of all time: Tool and Metallica
Cool. I like those bands, too. This was Lars Ulrich and Maynard James Keenan, though.
Me too
Same!
I got my ticket to see Tool in January at The Moody Center in Austin TX!! Been wanting to see them for years!! I saw APC open for NIN during The Fragility Tour but never got to see Tool. Can’t wait! Metallica is one of only two major acts left on my live concert bucket list, the other being Foo Fighters. I’ve seen pretty much everybody else I’ve wanted to at this point
Lars is actually a great host. I'm impressed.
Justin G. Quinton
everyone has to be good at something.
What do you expect Lars has been in and out of music history love him or hate him he us highly influential.
He's better at talking than he is at drumming
Lars does a great job in all these interviews
That Guy Post a few of your bands songs and let us all decide if you actually know what you're talking about
Man. Who would have thought that Lars could conduct such great interviews. Dude knows how to communicate..
Lars used to be one of biggest douchebag on music scene but he's a laidback and nice person.
I think that ability is what has kept him from failing. His technical skill at drums is very good but not great, his ability to connect with fans, enlist fans and provide fans with a likeable product is probably the best since Gene Simmons.
Pioneer!
David Brown perfect summation.
He can't drum so he had to something good
"We are merchants of emotion." -- What a powerful statement by Maynard.
That's why he is my favorite lyricist of all time
He makes heaps of great quotes. One he said recently was good "Whether I'm relevant or not is irrelevant". Not super deep or anything but it's still a cool saying.
Seen this right as he was saying it lol
Lars gets Maynard to mention Tool first...That is a good interviewer.
Im so high theres a big ol smiley face behind Maynard.
Jesse Valdez I see it😀 but I'm not high 😔
Jesse Valdez what has been seen can not be unseen. Damn you man, damn you!!
Jesse Valdez hysterical
Lmao 😂 there is
Jesse Valdez 😂
Maybe the greatest interview Maynard's ever done. Props to Lars, he made the right questions, and got the most brutally honest out of Maynard.
Drain Bamage definitely on par with his 2 joe rogan sessions, considering that this was only 21 minutes.
Deberias chequear la de Marc Maron
Lars is great !!!! I guess bc all these years being the business side of Metallica helps him being a great commicat or
@Shaun Frederick this is exactly what its about!
I honestly never was a big Maynard fan, but watching him be interviewed, especially by people he feels comfortable with, is making me rethink my opinion of him. He's very intelligent, articulate, very funny and seems like a good guy. He looks comfortable, clearly likes Lars. He's a not a bad dude. I think the small percentage of knucklehead Tool fans is why he reacts the way he does. I've changed my mind about you Mr. Keenan 👏👏👏
@shane tackett
I don't give F what anybody thinks. I'm stating my opinion which I have every right to do. If you don't like it, to F'N bad bro.
Funny I used to think Lars was a pretentious ass but this changed my mind
@@rubaidaallen2764 I hear what your saying. I remember reading an interview where he spoke about how difficult it was to perform WINGS FOR MARIE live, because of the emotionally vulnerable nature of it, and because of the meathead consumer concert dudes in attendance who would not appreciate sentiment or real expression. He wasnt being pretentious, he actually created something from the soul. That is hard to lug around in front of thousands of strangers.
@@rubaidaallen2764 geez, that was rough, huh? I care about your comment. I have liked Maynard as an artist, but he was always a tool. Sarcastic and a troll. I just tried to ignore that part and enjoy his music.
I do like this version better..honest and respectful.
Not a big. MJK fan 🤔🤯
The best hosts listen, and having been through the mill on the other side since 1981(3), love him or hate him, Lars is a great host. He lets people speak, and doesn't do what a lot of hosts do and try to colour themselves and talk about themselves. He is totally immersed in the subject matter, loves music. He's a true fan, always has been. That's cool.
Interviews are always more engaging when the interviewer actually respects and appreciates the individual they are interviewing, rather then some random job with cut and paste questions by a person who is basically clueless about your art
avester777 touché
Spot on.
Well said
I think what is cool about Lars is that all these years in the business and he still “wants to know” what makes others tick.
Second Ulrich interview I watch and I'm impressed. He takes the back seat and actually asks great relevant question.
Yes all of the Lars interview are highly enjoyable.
Its cause he can relate to them, hes been there and done it also, so he knows all struggles and beautys of that game
Yeah Lars has pulled his head out of his own ass.
It's nice to see Maynard fully comfortable and open.
See the interview with Joe Rogan.
Kilt Xan I have. This is even a level above.
*[FULLY?]*
Probably because he is being interviewed by someone who knows and understands what he feels and talks about
With Maynard interviews-there is always a HUGE difference in one's where he is speaking with a friend and one where he is speaking with a typical reporter/journalist. Friends know his personality and roll with it and he them, with journalists, they take his dryness and it's interpreted as just ...... and he just hates talking with journalists, unless it's regarding his winemaking.
A member of Tool drinking Starbucks Coffee? Being a Tool fan, I'll have to look into the connection between Tool and Starbucks. This could take a year or two. Cover me, I'm going in!!!
Hahaha. Spiral out brother.
make sure their cult doesn't get to you before you get to them
HES A FAKEEEEE LOL JK
Wine... Red wine is the cup!
Good taste attracts good taste.
Lars is not only a great communicator and interviewer, but he is also credible and relatable to the rock icons he interviews. This is why the conversation between he and who ever he interviews is so fluid and un-awkward - it is a mutually respectful vibe, and intelligent questions that are not insulting to to interviewee.
He's intelligent and thinks before he opens his mouth to say anything. He tells it like it is and that's why we love him. He f'n awesome.
Love everything about this. Musicians interviewing musicians. Plus Lars actually let's him talk; he doesn't interrupt him. Awesome.
AC/DC singer does something similar & he is great at it too
also they both (tried) to fight agints streaming and other music industry changes and problemsn, they understand each other in that matter.
Thats Howard Sterns Job ! To Interrupt ...used to love the man when i was young but now I cant watch Howard interview anyone , just painful it is........
@@BlueHopi144you just peeked my interest
@@patrickolivier1 if u search Lars Ulrich podcasts , they are amazing
Lars is a damn good interviewer
WAS a damn good drummer up until 2000.
@Dan Maler he still is a great drummer check out there live shows from 2019
@@Danimal77 bro check out their most recent live events, they really tightened the sound up
Grow up loving Metallica! First CD purchased was their reload Album. Tool was next level for me, my brain at 8 was just overwhelmed by their complexity. To see these two legends of my youth chatting, priceless.
interesting to hear the difference when maynard is talking with one of his peers, rather than a journalist or fan.
You can tell they respect each other alot. Both are super important to music (regardless what you think of Lars's playing ability)
You mean the drummer in the greatest metal band of all time??
Thank you for speaking to the facts. @@patrickolivier1
10/10 musician interview. Other hosts should take note from Lars. He asked great questions and didn't get in the way of the answers. I hope this series continues.
4:05 “Should the guitar solo be 16 bars or 32 bars?”
Adam Jones: How about 46 and 2 bars
Danny Carey: (cracks knuckles and pulls out a giant slide-rule)
You win the internet
That's exactly what I thought when he said _"right..."_ it's like _"oh yeah, sure, as if..."_ lmaooo.
Well played.
12:21 reminds me of the Invincible lyrics, "Warrior struggling to remain relevant"
I noticed that too..i wonder if it was before or after he wrote invincible.
Lars brings an inside baseball feel to this. Probably why Maynard was so comfortable, because Lars was asking relevant questions.
Lars is an exceptional interviewer because he knows writing music , music industry , music performance and he likes all music genres . I really enjoy all his interviews
CANADA IS THE NEW MONACHARCY. :( ITS AN UPHILL BATTLE BUT WE GOT THIS. JOE BIDEN IS ACTUALLY NOT SO BAD LOLOLOL.
17:00 I would love to hear about how he learned he could sing and how he went from that to actually singing, improving, etc. Nobody has ever asked him as far as I know.
I enjoy how Maynard carries himself. Very professional.
This is exactly how it should be. You want you're interviewee to be honest and open, you gotta relate, mjk isn't the easiest person to interview judging by other interviews. Hate that lars gets so much stick. Well done lars. Respect.
I actually really like these interviews, and I think it's because they are always musician with musician
Brett Beard yeah i was thinking the same thing.. Artists interviewing artists are awesome
Correct !
Brett Beard yes there is actual substance
When Maynard speaks you listen. The way tha guy speaks about music and how he creates them is just inspiring. Wisdom emanates from this guy.
Andy Jor Maynard is life forever until the end
EVERYTHING Maynard says is inspiring, insightful and intelligent. We need more people like him in the world.
But his calm sound can be a bit annoying. God-tier artist though.
It doesn't matter what stupid people says, Lars you are a genious: You created your own drumming style that influenced millions, you created one of the most relevand band in the history of music, and you are a good damn interviewer, making the best interview that I ever watched of Maynard.
Loves from Argentina.
12:10 - 12:50 So honest, so true and so humbling. Wonderful interview!
We should all be so lucky to be as mature, mentally-collected and hard working as Maynard. Great interview by Lars.
I love how Lars redirects Maynard’s quote, ... “your parents, your best friend and the guy you can’t stand” and tries to have Maynard assign which bands he means. I was thinking the same thing. “Did you hear a goat?” 🤣 Great interview!
Mike Ratherson : i luv me MJKs response. He truley understands the art of music. The riff and angst requires all three. This is a seriously smart individual who works in with the backdrop to blast an indeliable timestamp on the age.
Find the beauty in the dissonance.
I'm impressed by how Lars can get the most eloquent answers from Maynard by sharing a little of his background making the whole interview very relaxed, almost like soothing. Both guys render themselves smart and chatty.
Amazing at how profound, and how blatantly obvious the enormous impact of having an actual artist (Lars) interviewing another artist (Maynard), and the difference it makes towards the overall success of content, compared to the typical radio dj, podcast host, or average fan that's usually conducting the interview. Maynard's whole demeanor, and his responses are completely different. It's like he's more comfortable responding to someone he most certainly considers a contemporary in the industry. Great job Lars. Much respect.
Words
Nice job from Lars. He’s doing great with these interviews
10:30 I love Maynard’s point about how important it is for bands and artists to continue to challenge themselves and not try to continue to make the same thing over and over again. It’s how artists and music itself evolves and more fans of these artists need to realize this.
Maynard is so good with irony, metaphors, and comparative speaking its beautiful I don't even think he tries... it just comes natural. He speaks like a great writer and thinks like one. The Lennon of our time.
Jordan Lawson it really is effortless for him.
Props to Lars on this interview. You can tell he and Maynard have a lot of respect for each other and it shows in their interaction and the questions that Lars thinks to ask and how he asks them
As someone who normally can't stand Lars interviews, I have to admit - he is doing a fantastic job with these.
man I love lars, he is an amazing communicator of ideas and questions, arrangements in music and yeah of course his drumming is rad as hell
I could listen to these two all day. Lars has several options after his playing days are over. Interviews could be his future. He knows how to chat n ask great questions.
First time I've enjoyed a full interview with an artist. Brilliant stuff
Wow, what an amazing interview, Lars asked really good questions. Love hearing Maynard as always!

This always will be one of my favorite interviews ever, two legends in music history, together.
This is the best Maynard interview I've ever heard. To hear him really deep dive into his creative process was captivating.
I saw Tool and Metallica live about a month apart last summer (Montreal). Big fan of both these gentlemen.
Lucky man, still waiting for Tool to at least get close to Indianapolis haha
Lucky men, still waiting for Tool to get close to Colombia, even Latin America. I don't think that's ever going to happen sadly.
Brian they are coming to Chicago for a music clinic
Tools montreal show was awesome
Same, in Massachusetts. Was a great month!
I love when he's talking about embracing his inner grandpa and he's in his element with his story having funn and you can see his inner youth shine through. It's nice seeing young Maynard again :)
This is like Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, but with musicians. Great interview and a great guest.
merchants of emotion indeed. I thoroughly enjoyed this interview, everyone so laid back and chill. good upload ty

Getting MJK to relax and talk about the history of how he does stuff was great to watch. Good on you Lars for asking great questions.
Beautiful. I like how he talked about approaching each band vocally.
i never tought Maynard was so humble , what a legend .
Lars and Maynard are just so chill and cool. Great interview! So much talent and legacies between these two.
Always a treat to hear Maynard. Multifaceted, charismatic, intelligent
You can tell both of the guys have great respect for each other and and are fans of one another's work. The leadway and interest they take when the other one is talking is easy to see. I bet each one of them had a great time doing this interview/talk.
I love these tons of respect flowing in this interview. I love to see Lars so respectful and forthcoming towards his guest who he knows well is brilliant and admired so much. And I love to see Lars so humble and empathic that it makes Maynard so relaxed and natural.
Great interview. Really well thought out questions, just two musicians talking about what they do and how they do it.
Two legends, sitting together and chatting with each other... priceless. Love Metallica, Tool, Puscifer and APC 🤘❤
Holy smokes! Maynard with Ulrich .. why was this not trending????
I gotta say that I have not seen more interesting interviews on musicians than the ones that Lars pulls off. He absolutely adapts his tone, humour, questions and approach to the individual he's interviewing. Majestic and simple at the same time.
Thank you Lars. I truly enjoy this.
ok... I was a Lars fan because Metallical. . well, now I am a Lars fan because Lars... wow, great interview!!!!!
Lars is a cool cat talked with him in nyc 2008. Talked about Motörhead. He is a music nerd. I didn’t noticed any I am above you vibe. I met James, my favorite. He was stand off ish
Tony Arenas Lars is great. He’s a massive rock star and I don’t understand all the hate.
You know what's better than this interview?
The music.
I never would have imagined Lars interviewing Maynard, lol, wild, my 90s kid heart can't take it
Very impressed with both of them. Couldn't imagine being Maynard and actually sitting down to talk about his lyrics/songs. Sometimes the method and the feedback and the result is the last thing you want to express when you're tied up in the process of something! Fortunately many fans of many of his projects are glad he did. Thanks to them & their good attitudes!
Way too short man ..i could have listened to these guys chat for hours

The internet is such a blessing, man! i've never imagine Maynard james interviewed by Lars ulrich.
Just like everyone here, I can't believe how good Lars is at this! Everything, the questions, body language, timing his come in.. Amazing!
This is the best interview I’ve ever seen with Maynard James Keenan. And I’ve seen them all. Very impressive.
The most normal looking rockstart with one of musics most amazing voices. I like seeing someone like lars with a ton of success and the knowledge of the rockstar life doing interviews.
I've never been the biggest fan of Lars, but man, this interview was phenomenal. FANTASTIC questions, and I loved how willing Maynard was to answer (almost) all of them. I want to listen to this again and again. GREAT stuff!
Lars did a great job. Respect to both these guys, I've listened to them both for years.

Quite a candid look into the machinations of both personalities here, the raport demonstrated is telling of the degree of respect they have for one another. A gem amongst the noise that is rock journalism/media, hats off!
This is the best Maynard interview, well done Lars. Lars is a better interviewer than I initially expected, he knows how to ask good questions and just back off to allow the artist to answer. A+ all around, thank you.
Very good interview, Lars is good at this.
He looks like larry darryl and darryl from newhart

One of the best interviews with Maynard,,, ever
My god. So I got two guys from my two favorite bands together. INSTA WIN!
Great interview. I always like interviews that focusing on music itself, the process of creating the music is always exciting.
Most music sites or magazine interviews tend to focus on stupid stuff where the next day they'd highlight one line from the interview to stir up crab.
Mmm...crab..
This just might be the only ever interview i'll be rewatching.

So many great tidbits on collaboration, the creative process, and songwriting in this one. "Pay attention to where your feet are" is a particularly sound piece of advice. Great job Lars & MJK
