Same thing here. I'm really surprised how well the old phone performs compared to the new xperia. Every year when a new phone comes out, it makes you think the new phone performs a 100 times better. Definitly not the case!

I am one of the lucky few that could sneak a Xperia Pro-I (in thanks to your review!!) into Canada. The pure "analog" performance of it is nothing short of astonishing. Its like Sony's carefully-crafted loveletter to a pocketable dslr with absolutely no AI intervention which I can't overstate is so important to me and my cherished memories. Don't get me wrong. AI has its place and is VERY useful, but to apply it non-destructively in post is FAR better than baking it in during the shoot (looking at you, Google Pixel). I sincerely do not miss that infamous "Van Gogh" swirl that replaces details, or those blown-out faux-hdri images that a lot of software-driven cameras produce. I absolutely love your authenticity and breakdowns of these wonderful cameras - because of this phone (that im currently writing this comment on), I'll be saving up for an Alpha camera to continue to improve the craft! :)

There are no bad cameras, only bad photographers. Even with a crappy digital camera from 20 years ago, someone with an artistic eye can capture something beautiful or interesting. With regards to this comparison, i found myself preferring the older Xperia Ray photos sometimes over the newer Xperia 1 VI. The modern photos sometimes had a harsh and artificial sharpness to them which was off-putting and i think the softness of the older photos had a charming and vintage look about them for a few of thew photos. Still, modern conveniences and the huge amount of control that newer phones allow us, make the options to recreate older looks possible. Great video.

I guess the sensor readout time plays a big role here. It takes too long to read the frame from the first row to the last one, so even pretty slow movement results in a waving video.
Xperia ray will always be my favorite Android phone from 2011, super sharp 3.3 inch screen, super sleek body, and I rarely had typos even with my huge hands.
Very good video, thank you for that! I think that in a direct comparison you can see very clearly how new smartphone cameras oversharpen the images. Some of the forest shots with lots of details look more balanced on the Xperia Ray than on the Xperia 1 VI. But it's very interesting to see how far it has developed. But you are also a great photographer!

The Old SE Xperia is not perfect such as modern Xperia 1VI , but... but it has some nostalgic mood and vibe of the better time that will never be showed up again on Xperia Ray, that urge me to dig out my old boi SE wt19i (walkman-phone) and to recall that passed time I was happy and been in mountains in Colorado. Sony deserves praise for maintaining the design language of its phones through time; you instantly notice that both phones are from the same family. That continuity is kept even in the color reproduction of photos. For me, that is just the proof of the value of a company that focuses on creating a product with a soul, not just trying to sell thousands of devices you can mistake one with the other. A company that creates an Xperience you can remember even after thirteen years.

A friend of mine still has an Xperia Z2. I'm considering the latest xperia myself, because they don't have a ton of ugly ai upscaling going on in the pictures and video like samsung and others.

I've only recently come across tour videos, they're great. I had the Xperia Ray, and the Xperia mini and mini pro and loved them. They had character and I could slip the Xperia Ray into my shirt pocket. Insane the Xperia 10vi and absolutely love it - comfort in the hand, insane battery life, 3.5mm headphone socket, SD card slot (handy for me with over 200gb of lossless uncompressed music). The Sony Xperia 10vi camera is better than I was expecting. I did some photos on caves and they were stunning. I'd consider getting a Sony Xperia 1vi but I can't find anywhere that says if there is an improvement to the 3.5mm audio quality. (Yes the 1vi is faster, has better camera, snapdragon sound, WiFi 7, Bluetooth 5.4 & LE to name a few. But the decider for me would be a significant improvement in the 3.5mm wired audio out for uncompressed lossless (using the usb Audio Player pro app). Any thoughts on the audio difference very much appreciated.
I always tell my non-photographer friends, that some phones nowadays can take as good of a photo as any camera. One of the reasons i use a camera is that when im out with it, i put a lot more thought around the photo, whereas the phone for me is more of a travel camera for fast snaps. P.s. love the vids, keep going!
You are an exellent photographer it is really good to watch your videoes could you also do a compaireshing between the old Sony Ericson Satio and Xperia 1VI . The Satio have a xenon flash and as far as i know it was some of the best camera phones ever . Imean if you got time and get your hands on the old Satio that what be fine .
Hey Nilsson, try the autofocus on Sony Ericsson K800i with any flagship phone of today; you'll be amazed at the result. I once snapped a fully spinning ceiling fan and the three blades were actually frozen with no motion blur. I'm yet to see such a powerful focus on any modern phones.
The problem with the Ray is that the phone has a plastic camera cover that quickly becomes cloudy over time. The photos look washed out as a result. Replace the plastic cover with a glass cover and the Ray takes much better photos. I've tried it myself. With a glass cover, the Ray takes photos that are just as good as the Xperia top models up to 2015 or 2016. (Z3, Z5...). Of course, the phone can't keep up with the videos. But here it helps to switch off the electronic image stabilizer. It's actually counterproductive in this case.
Honestly, the old phone would be a GREAT vlogging camera. Like oldschool holiday video. The only thing it would need in my opinion, is some sort of stabilisation. Other than that, the quality and "style" of the old camera is really really pleasing.

This is why people buy Google Pixel's, Sony 2011 and Sony 2024 in terms of Photo quality are very close, while comparing ANY 2011 phone to even Pixel 1 from 2016 will show crazy difference and progress in technology
If you ever get a chance I'd love to see you use the sony 55mm-210 zoom lens in nature! I picked one up as a starter zoom lens and I can't figure out if I'm the problem or the lens but my pictures haven't been as sharp as I'd like.
Concerning video footage, the progress is insane. But the still images look not so dramatically different. Btw: did you say "Hi" to mosqitoes in the forest?

There's something about the nostalgia that older cameras give, that I really like. There are some pretty cool lens filters that have the same affect.

The thing I noticed the most is how good stabilization is nowdays vs 2011 . Image quality is surprisingly pretty ok.
