    As you age, you gradually lose the ability to refocus your eyes -- a phenomenon as old as humanity itself -- leading to a reliance on bifocals, contacts and procedures like LASIK surgery. Electrical engineer Nitish Padmanaban offers a glimpse of cutting-edge tech that's truly a sight for sore eyes: dynamic, autofocusing lenses that track your sight and adjust to what you see, both near and far.
    The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Hi Nitish -
    This is an excellent presentation.
    I am 80 years old, also an Electrical Engineer.
    My range of accommodation is 1.25 Diopters.
    I read a computer screen at 25 inches, with no glasses at all.
    I do use a plus lens, (cost $10) for work at 13 inches.
    So:
    No bifocal is ever necessary for me.
    For everything else?
    No glasses at all.
    The entire eye, is a long term control system, controling its refractive state, to its average of accommodation, from birth to maturity.
    (All primate studies.)
    The word, "Presbyopia", has no practical impact on me or my excellent vision.

    It's not so hard to predict that, these are going to come as smart glasses, with many other features. So all the battery, electronics, cameras and software are already going to be there, and auto focus is just going to be in the "Accesibility" features in the settings.
    Smart glasses are going to be dope, but they could literally ruin our lifes as well. Like imagine ads projected right into your retina at any point. They will say, you can turn it off if you want, but you didn't pay $799 for somthing you don't want to use.

    The guy is slightly incorrect about presbyopia. If you've been nearsighted and work glasses all your life, your lenses in your eye can get locked in to close focusing. I had cataract surgery on only my right eye. I chose to have the focus set permanently for distance. My left eye is stuck on really close vision (like 5"). So, my depth perception was shot for a while. But I finally got (almost) completely used to it, partly thanks to my Nikon progressive lenses. (See my other comment.)

    I required both reading glasses and long distant glasses. But being poor, I could not update these glasses to maintain sharp vision. Eventually my long distant glasses fell apart due to being so old. So now I always wore my reading glasses, and did so even when looking across far distances. This exercised my eyes. Now I only need the one pair of glasses.

    Micro linear motors will do for the lenses, dotted at the corners of the the two split lenses for each eye, you could use the design from the butterfly key switch or something similar to lower the profile, a faster solution could be magnetically driven coils that can set a distance although vibration could be a problem. It sounds like a fun project though, I'd love to tease it out 😊

  • @atimholt
    @atimholt 4 роки тому

    This would also be extremely useful in VR. Lack of focal depth is one of the tougher problems in that space. With this tech, you'd want to reverse the effect so that your eyes have to focus as they would in real life. You can also tweak it for those with vision problems, of course.

    In the late 90'ies I worked in small company that had a patent covering communication between a rechargeable battery and users/chargers.
    I believed that it was nonsense, - too expensive to implement.
    My disregard for this patent lasted until a major US semiconductor company bought my company in 2000 and closed it, - for the sake of this patent and some other battery related patents.
    If you are in the the electronic industry, you know why is was possible to implement an idea in 2000 that seemed impossible in 1996.
    Thus, - never underestimate ideas that might seem impossible today.

However, I miss reading. I miss the quiet and just reading.
    I'd be a test subject for this hands down. I hope he's doing well and that he wins a noble prize.
    I'm in my mid-30s. Part of me thinks I won't see this fully be utilized in my lifetime, but it makes me smiling thinking about a generation that will use so they can read to their heart's content. Good luck. Who knows. Tech advancements are pretty fast. Maybe I"ll get lucky.

    I am not even joking but when he said that the lens cannot tell at which distance should it focus, I was like well put a distance measuring thingy or maybe an eye tracker . Obviously we need both to make it work but I am dumb I thought using one would work😅 the thought came to me because of the animation , it looked like an eye tracker

    Let me offer this researcher a free suggestion. Forget rangefinders and convergence triangulation with partial mirrors. Simply turn your camera around and look at the reflection of the image projected onto the retina (Think your camera phone.) Is is Out Of Focus (OOF)? If it is OOF the microprocessor calculates whether the lens needs to focus out or in, make the correction within microseconds .. .. .. check it, focus again .. .. .. .. rinse, repeat .. .. .. as long as the eyes are open The world will be in focus wherever the person turns his gaze. Easy? No. Bur far more direct than all the indirect calculation machinery your are now using.

    Till this comes out, if you need progressive lenses, I HIGHLY recommend going with the Nikon "formulation." I suffered through crappy progressive lenses, with only a very narrow useable width in the bottom half of the lens for decades. When I got my current pair of glasses, the optician offered more than one choice for what she called the "formulation" of the progressive lenses. Basically, that means "the math they use to calculate the shape of the lenses. I was $300 more but OMG is it worth it! It is almost like not needing glasses any more. I just look at something and it is in focus. The angle I naturally hold my head is already the perfect angle to see through the correct part of the lenses. And I can see perfectly all the way from one side to another! Almost every day I am thankful I spent that extra $300. Money, I could barely afford to pay at the time, by the way.
    Now, I also have a pair of non-progressive glasses for when I work on the computer or in my car. So, the Nikon lenses aren't completely magical. But pretty damned close.

      Is that what other people call the 'neurallens'. Where they do a comprehensive eye exam and get the focus level from all 180 degrees correct?

    • @GrantSR
      @GrantSR 7 місяців тому

      @@spextrekid9410 Nope. The optometrist just did a regular exam and gave a regular bi-focal prescription. Then the optician just simply passed me if I wanted to pay extra for the Nikon "formulation." The Nikon formulation is really almost just the same as progressive lenses, they just have better math for how to make those progressive lenses better. But there was no extra super special examination involved.

    Why do they need a distance sensor? Can't they calculate the distance from the crossing point of the gaze direction of each eye from the eye tracker?
