In hindsight, it certainly could've been better, but at the same time, there is a lot to praise. NSMB was a strong start, implementing many of the fundamental mechanics we'd expect from modern 2D Mario, however, the game can be difficult for some to return to, and in many aspects, such as level design, was surpassed by NSMBWii. NSMBWii is a modern classic. A game that set standards. A game that checked off boxes you didn't even know you needed, but now cannot play Mario without. It is top-notch in nearly every regard, and still remains the best-executed 2D Mario game in the series. NSMBU stands on equal footing when it comes to level design, but drops the ball with everything else, from bosses to music to world maps to enemy rings to power-ups to the finale. NSMBU at times feels creative and well-inspired, and at other times feels like a shameless, whole hog rip-off. It desperately needed more development time to seal in the cracks, as well as introduce at least one new gameplay mechanic, which it sorely lacks. NSMB2 no doubt stole much of that development time, and accomplished jack squat with it. It is a forgettable, reprehensible game that rode off the tails of everything else. Nuff said. So, in short, the NSMB games started strong and peaked early. They rode the wave of success and innovation until later titles failed to uphold those standards. That laziness ensured the NSMB games would never be revered in the same way as the classics. Honestly, had the series managed to improve past NSMBWii, upping the anty in several regards and consistently subverting the audience's expectations, it could've been incredible. It could've been the best. As of now though, it's pretty good all things considered.
Wii is okay at best, tight level design being trashed to make giant levels that accommodate multiplayer hurts the gamefeel for singleplayer campaigns. DS has significantly better level design
Before NSMBWii the last 2D Mario game where Koopalings appeared was Super Mario World, the last Mario game where they appeared was Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga on GBA
Having growing up playing the ‘New’ franchise since the beginning, it will always admire me every time I come back and replay them (even if games like NSMB2 didn’t live up to everyone’s expectations).
New Super Mario Bros Wii was the game that I grew up on with my older brother. We got the Wii when I was 6 or 7, and all we had was Wii Sports, MarioKart, and the Wii version. I didn’t become a diehard Mario fan, but I bout cried when I heard that title screen music again. I remember being so terrified of giant Bowser that I had to go to my room while my brother beat him. Maybe I’ll go back and play it sometime.
NSMB for the DS is probably my favorite Mario game of all time. Such great nostalgia, and great level designs, just great all around. Even though, I have to admit that the Wii version had the better boss fights
NSMB will always have a special place in my heart regardless, especially the first game. It just gets me so nostalgiac and excited for reasons I don’t understand.
Fun Fact:During the Bowser & Dry Bowser Boss Fights in New Super Mario Bros 2 the claw swiping attacks actually don't hurt you that just destroy the platforms
20:05 That's not true, the Koopalings had their last appearence in Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga! Also die shifting of Worlds/Combininf two world styles into one wasn't initially done in SMB2 but Super Mario Bros. Wii.
15:55 that brings back happy memories, I am currently 17 and when i was younger and had my ds I loved mario. And since we used to play with no tutorials I had to find every small detail by myself. And at some point during bowser’s castle I was really confused on how to pass the level. I was surprised when my mom helped me and turned out to be great at the game, really connected me a lot more to my mom. After I was I able to buy my first console by myself (Nintendo switch) Im just looking forward to play these games with my parents. Mario has done so much for us Its just crazy ;p
I think “bad” is a misnomer. More like disappointing. I kinda think of the first one for the ds as a Super Mario Land situation: a basic game that introduced us to Mario but unlike the Land series, we never got a Mario Land 2: Golden Coins after, instead we got more of Mario Land 1 (if that makes sense). Considering how innovative or just flat out creative Mario was originally as a 2d platformer, dependable, C+ to B+ quality games don’t really cut it
Loved the video! You made me appreciate these games even more than I already did. A lot of the stuff you said reminded me of my childhood as well haha. Very well editing and the audio is really nice!
The real reason why there such a huge amount of disdain for NSMB series, is how it affected the Mario Series as a whole The bland aesthetic bled into every corner of the Mario Series, the main 3D platformers, the Paper Mario series, the sport games were all infested with the blandness of the NSMB series
My biggest issue with NSMB is what I call the Yoshi syndrome. Crafted World and Story can be 200/10 games otherwise, but it speaks volumes that Crafted World becomes a billion times better as soon as you underlay Yoshis Island music. For NSMB, Bah Baaaaaah is no soundtrack in my world, no matter how good or bad the music might be, it just annoys me to death
This is suspiciously similar to Silok Hawks video on this idea of, a retrospective of the entire New super Mario series. I don’t just mean the idea, but yeah it is the same idea. I am talking about how similar all the reviews of each game are. The main differences that set the reviews apart are literally just this guy adding subjective points that are extremely dumb once you look into them for more than a second. The main one being him saying that NSMB for the DS was an underrated game, even though it was one of the best selling games on the DS, which the DS was also a really well selling console. I am not saying this guy 100% ripped off Silok Hawks video, I am just saying that it is suspicious how all of the reviews in a 1 hour and 20 minute video are all structed very similarly to his video.
this is a great video. Something i found funny though, is that line about nsmb ds being an underrated game, but then right after that in the nsmbwii segment its said that nsmbds was the 2nd best selling 2d mario game, i think it's odd to say its an underrated game when it seems like it was quite popular. I guess you could argue selling well doesn't mean the game wont be underrated or something.
Really don't get why there's dislike for these games. Like yeah I can see lack of innovation but they all feel quite different to me when I play them, but based on the game style. This is personally my favorite franchise because it's what I started with, and the sounds and visuals are just great. Don't really know why we're having the debate that this franchise sucks when it really doesn't.
I'm tired of people talking bad on NSMB. These games definitely still hold up by today's standards. In addition to that, NSMB DS gets flack for being 'unoriginal' by today's standards when in actuality it literally brought back 2-D Mario to the modern era. Mario Bros Wii made multiplayer (wonky) fun and inventive and NSMB U had Luigi U which was one of the best level packs we've seen since NSMB 2 (Which I can admit feels like the most contrived game). NSMB is a great series and I think everyone needs to boot up an old copy and remind themselves why they love Mario in the first place
I've always though NSMB was bad, dude, you can't remind me why I love it in the first place when I never did. I bought the DS one on release and thought it was boring. Yes, even back then. For me, SMB3 was the pinnacle of 2D Mario that they never surpassed (World is still good though).
50:08 in defense of the change, this type of thing happens on Earth as well. For example: Go from Northern Arizona (say the town of Flagstaff) and you'll be in the Mountains and cold and snow; and go down I-17 towards Phoenix and all of sudden your in the Desert where its hot, dray and sunny. I'm sure places like that exist in Japan where you have Mountains.
I think I just noticed an interesting detail New super mario bros 2. (actually the 3rd game) introduces elements from Super mario bros 3 Meanwhile New super mario bros U (the 4th), introduces elements from Super mario world (the 4th game, if you exclude Lost Levels) I really like how they followed the same pattern
I think it may be cause of my autism or something, but I CANNOT HANDLE THESE GAMES WHEN I WAS LITTLE cause I had to collect every single coin, break every block even though how tedious it was. And sometimes it’s not even possible!! (Yea. This didn’t get any easier for me with NSMB 2) And I would get so like emotionally affected over it that I couldn’t handle playing anymore💀
They could easily make one of the best new super Mario Bros game by just changing up world themes, more creative level design, adding new power ups like the boomerang suit, the blue shell, the mega mushroom, ext. It would also be pretty cool to see a map that connects but also just doesn't randomly change from over world to dessert. And they need harder bosses ASAP. I don't see a problem in them keeping the koopalings but Only for the main castle. I hope they do the same thing Mario ds aimed for. Unique bosses, all that pizazz.
I bet someone else has already commented this, but the bowser heads in the bowser fight in new super mario bros 2 are made out of stone, like gargoyles, not metal
NSMB DS and Wii will always be special to me, probably poured over a thousand hours into each as a kid. But all of these games bring back childhood memories, DS was the game that made me fall in love with games Wii was the only thing I wanted for Christmas back in 2009 2 came out on my birthday and I remember my dad bringing me to GameStop to get it and U was the sole reason why I got the Wii U, joke was on me I guess lol
IMO I would be extremely happy if they took the Luigi bros concept and combined it with the idea of NG+ Finish the easier levels as Mario, then unlock Luigi mode with remixed shorter levels Heck maybe they could have extra fun with it and make the opening for Luigi continue directly after Mario's ending, with Mario winning but being bamboozled and captured
A couple of things in NSMB2 worth talking about were the Invincibility Leaf being added. The second is the new level type unique to that game, the Rainbow 🌈 levels.
NSMB2 has a special place in my heart as it was the first ever official mario game and game console game that I ever played. And it was one of the first games that I ever owned on my 3DS for my birthday back in 2013 at that time my only experience with mario was playing a bunch of mario based flash games both the good and the bad ones.
I think the next game can have a 3D world like artstyle and have a twist on existing level theme. 9 tweaked worlds and 9 remixed world which have their original theme. A red desert and ice-covered snow world is a good example. The power up can be poison flower where you have to wait a while before defeating enemies and a cheese that turns mario into mouse mario which let mario walk on ceilings. They should have original bosses instead of boom boom in the tower levels like mega hammer Bros or king bob-omb. The castle having Koopalings is fine but they can have interesting attacking method once in a while. The world map can be more inspired by Mario world in certain worlds while keeping the format for the others. Would be nice to see more obscure and new emeries like shy guys and goloomba. There can be more moves to reward advanced players like roll and long jump. The score system should be hidden and the game should limit Mario to 25 lives. Coins also should reward you with power-ups when it reaches 100. I think that’s enough for a new 2D Mario.
NSMB:Wii was the first game in the series I played and when I got to the final fight, my 6 year old self legit wondered why there was so much time left on the clock. And then mega Bowser appeared. Still one of, if not the coolest 2d Bowser fight.
I think Luigi U's difficulty is great as a bonus mode or DLC, but would be really bad as the primary game and turn a lot of people away. It's the kind of thing that's fun when optional but too much when the focus.
I think that the reason so many people have a problem with these series is because of how they were viewed versus what they were meant to be. I don't think these were supposed to be very innovative Mario games, I think they were just there to give each Nintendo system a 2D Mario game for the sake of just having one available on each system rather than to innovate across each entry.

You really need to work on your spelling and grammar.
Wii is okay at best, tight level design being trashed to make giant levels that accommodate multiplayer hurts the gamefeel for singleplayer campaigns. DS has significantly better level design
Won’t forget how they gave away NSMB2 for free digitally when it launched, got it for free lol. Rip eshop
Thank you so much for keeping making us videos. We love you!
new super mario bros wii was my childhood
Wow! That's one of the most complete and elaborate reviews I've seen recently. Surely deserves more subscribers. Great video!
If I’m being honest, if they combine nsmb wii’s levels with nsmb u’s world map, it would be the best game ever
the Koopalings did make an reappearance in the Mario franchise before NSMBW via Mario and Luigi: SuperStar Saga in 2003.
NSMB for the DS is probably my favorite Mario game of all time. Such great nostalgia, and great level designs, just great all around. Even though, I have to admit that the Wii version had the better boss fights
No it isn't
NSMB will always have a special place in my heart regardless, especially the first game. It just gets me so nostalgiac and excited for reasons I don’t understand.
Fun Fact:During the Bowser & Dry Bowser Boss Fights in New Super Mario Bros 2 the claw swiping attacks actually don't hurt you that just destroy the platforms
The original new super mario for the ds definitely isn't bad so many good memories
Your videos are always so entertaining and relaxing to watch!
Considering how innovative or just flat out creative Mario was originally as a 2d platformer, dependable, C+ to B+ quality games don’t really cut it
They're all good games. The only thing wrong is that they've all been the same since wii.
DS and wii are the only unique ones
If those two were the only game, think the series would be more well received
I really appreciated the extra editing effort at the end of this video. lots of nostalgia and the perfect ending to your commentary.
Loved the video! You made me appreciate these games even more than I already did. A lot of the stuff you said reminded me of my childhood as well haha.
Very well editing and the audio is really nice!
Very good quality, you deserve 30x your sub count.
Dang… watching this vid was kinda useless bc they are just copy paste from his vids before
Did yall know in nsmbw toad houses, you can ground pound onto ur friend's head and steal their turn
its icredible how much effort you put in to this video! great work.
The real reason why there such a huge amount of disdain for NSMB series, is how it affected the Mario Series as a whole
The bland aesthetic bled into every corner of the Mario Series, the main 3D platformers, the Paper Mario series, the sport games were all infested with the blandness of the NSMB series
It hurt my soul when you didn't grab that star coin at 27:40
My biggest issue with NSMB is what I call the Yoshi syndrome.
This sub-franchise is vaguely the main reason as to why that meme of *My Dancers: Koopas, Goombas!* aka *Bah Bah* remotely even exists :)
The main reason why the New Super Mario Brothers series went stale is because Nintendo used Super Mario World as a template to build the games.
New Super mario bros 2 is underated
Its fu**ing overratet, the maps are so damn uncreativ. Compare it with donkey kong tropical breeze for example. It looks so ugly if you compare it.
@@TheRmaster86 wasnt comparing it to anything lol
Propeller Mushroom was absolutely broken
Really don't get why there's dislike for these games. Like yeah I can see lack of innovation but they all feel quite different to me when I play them, but based on the game style. This is personally my favorite franchise because it's what I started with, and the sounds and visuals are just great. Don't really know why we're having the debate that this franchise sucks when it really doesn't.
NSMB DS 1 and 2 are some of my favorite games I've ever played, most ppl who hate the series never even played it
I'm tired of people talking bad on NSMB.
Wait... Luigi U has different levels? I need to give them a try then.
I've always though NSMB was bad, dude, you can't remind me why I love it in the first place when I never did. I bought the DS one on release and thought it was boring. Yes, even back then. For me, SMB3 was the pinnacle of 2D Mario that they never surpassed (World is still good though).
@@ZeroKitsune I don't care about your opinion
Fun fact: in 5-Castle, there is a block that can net you a mini mushroom.
4:12 it's the only block moving at a different speed too
Never played it, but i love that in the intro cutscene to NSMBU Mario reacts first (of course) and Luigi comically reacts last
NSMB DS also had the boo houses which were very cool levels
Phenomenal video, the pacing, humor, and delivery was perfect. I especially loved the coin part. Subscribed!
I think I just noticed an interesting detail
New super mario bros 2. (actually the 3rd game) introduces elements from Super mario bros 3
Meanwhile New super mario bros U (the 4th), introduces elements from Super mario world (the 4th game, if you exclude Lost Levels)
I really like how they followed the same pattern
I think it may be cause of my autism or something, but I CANNOT HANDLE THESE GAMES WHEN I WAS LITTLE cause I had to collect every single coin, break every block even though how tedious it was. And sometimes it’s not even possible!! (Yea. This didn’t get any easier for me with NSMB 2) And I would get so like emotionally affected over it that I couldn’t handle playing anymore💀
Sounds more like OCD to me.
"The guy from the baseball game" hit me so hard
I was big fan of that game and i remember petey piranha from there too
7:05 I honestly wonder if the minigames were supposed to be its own release but they just ended up adding them to mario 64/new super mario bros ds.
Small youtuber try not to make the most informative, entertaining, and detailed video ever known to man challenge (impossible)
But all of these games bring back childhood memories,
DS was the game that made me fall in love with games
Wii was the only thing I wanted for Christmas back in 2009
2 came out on my birthday and I remember my dad bringing me to GameStop to get it
and U was the sole reason why I got the Wii U, joke was on me I guess lol
IMO I would be extremely happy if they took the Luigi bros concept and combined it with the idea of NG+
Finish the easier levels as Mario, then unlock Luigi mode with remixed shorter levels
Heck maybe they could have extra fun with it and make the opening for Luigi continue directly after Mario's ending, with Mario winning but being bamboozled and captured
A couple of things in NSMB2 worth talking about were the Invincibility Leaf being added.
The second is the new level type unique to that game, the Rainbow 🌈 levels.
Frosted glacier is World 4 and sparkling waters is well free in new Super Mario Bros u
I don’t know who told you nsmb in ds was underrated especially when right after you said that you showed it sold 30 million copies
Mario's model in the first new super mario game is super detailed to be in a 2D DS game, like it!😃
NSMB2 has a special place in my heart as it was the first ever official mario game and game console game that I ever played. And it was one of the first games that I ever owned on my 3DS for my birthday back in 2013 at that time my only experience with mario was playing a bunch of mario based flash games both the good and the bad ones.
I think the series gets a bad rap. Was it kinda…. lazy of Nintendo? Yeah, 100%. But the levels are so well made that it’s hard to be mad at it.
I think that’s enough for a new 2D Mario.
awesome long video, I love watching stuff like this over a long time. Reminds me of the silokhawk video
5:28 "It's insanely ridiculous how easy this fight is" *footage showing him getting hit by Bowser's fireball* Good job🤦😆
Maybe this is how Nintendo got the idea of super Mario party 7:43
