Sunshine is still incredibly underrated, even to this day. Gets no respect for how unique it was relative to the other titles. Mario controls like a dream in that game.
I wanted to buy the all star pack for nintendo switch... but I was too young and didn't have a switch then. I always found sunshine more... "Unique" in a similar way to galaxy kinda...

As someone studying music theory and composition, the Mario games, especially the 3D ones have always amazed me and been a big inspiration. I can't begin to explain what these games have meant to me, growing up with Mario Galaxy one and two is probably the reason why I even love music so much or that I am who I am today.

Super Mario Galaxy is my absolute favorite Mario title of all time, even over 2. The memories of the many long hours spent playing it as a kid both solo and with my brother and being delighted and floored by the visuals and the movement and the story. I need to go pick up an old wii and play it again, man, the switch gameplay just ain't the same.
Mario Galaxy was my first 3d mario game. The soundtrack on display is so magical and unique due to it being a live orchestra recording, rather than software. Nintendo has yet to surpass it
It being live helps it, but it doesn’t automatically make it better. For instance, many of the best songs in that game are synthesized. Also, a lot of people in the comments are repeating the live orchestra idea- Did you hear this in another video?
I played this so much when I was younger… seeing the gameplay, stages, loading screens, intro screen. Hit me hard. I miss being a kid, at least I have an N64 and the original now
I agree about odyssey. When I first played Galaxy 2 i always thought how in the world can they ever top that game. After playing odyssey i was shocked and glad that they were able to prove me wrong.
Super Mario sunshine will always have a special place in my heart. I used to have a game cube at my grandma’s house and while she would play cards in the kitchen I’d play this game in the den and she would always ask me about the game. Such a good time man and such a good game. I miss those times
On the giant head: There's a British guy named Giles Goddard who moved to Kyoto to help Nintendo with Star Fox, and he stayed with them for the N64 era. He was messing around with rigging and animation and he made a model of Mario's head. He put some ping pong balls on his face and setup a camera to track his own head, and then at some point Miyamoto walked past his desk and had assumed it would be part of the final game. The interactivity with the controller was meant to show off the N64's rigging capability.
wow-just found myself completely binging all of your content, the quality for such a small channel is crazy. really enjoyed this video especially; subbed 😎
A cool secret in 3d land is in the pixel art stages, you can walk into the castle and get one ups and even go to new parts of the stage sometimes. I always thougt that was so cool.
What an incredible video, I had myself laughing and crying the whole way through. Really goes to show just how much the series we love has changed and grown! Here’s to more videos like this! And here’s to more Mario! Let’s-a-go!
Super mario 3 d world is one of my favorites. I got it when my daughter was pretty young and this got us into gaming together. We would mess around and dad would get through the harder stages. So many memories
The mini games in Mario 64 DS are also in New Super Mario Bros. DS. No unlock necessary. I never unlocked any mini games on 64 DS cause I could never get past the first boss. But I remember beating each minigame in the other game.
Pinna Park is my favourite level in sunshine, but it has a few safety hazards… 1. The boats do a full loop 2. You need to do a jump to get on the ferris wheel 3. The clams eat you 4. The Yoshi-Go-Round is broken 5. There are Electro-Koopas everywhere! 6. The roller coaster has a giant robot attacking it
Actually, Charles Martine's first "game" debut was in "Mario Teaches Typing" from 1991 :) But Nintendo themselves seem to have forgotten that fact as we saw in the Charles Martinet retirement post/video :D Also, you are able to get hints for the purple coins in Odyssey from the Bowser Odyssey Amiibo. I know, it's locked behind a gadget you have to buy, but the possibility is there. The next Mario game should just allow anyone to use those hints without paying for it. Btw my ranking would be: 1. Galaxy 2 2. Odyssey 3. Sunshine 4. Galaxy 5. 64 DS 6. 64 7. Bowser's Fury 8. 3D World 9. 3D Land
@@RoseQuartz692 Imo it's one of the best remakes one could ask for bc you get all that extra content rather than just the same game with better graphics. On antoher note, I was expecting that people would question my Galaxy 2 or Sunshine ranking first but I didn't expect the 64 and 64 DS thing to be the first thing that made someone ask me if I'm out of my mind 😂
Peach's Castle Is so beautiful!!! Structurally talking!!! I'd love to see it in 1:1 scale, like a Museum to be visited, with the possibility to go and visit the Garden in the Front, The Backyard, the Basement and the Upstairs too, with every room and paintinga 🤩🤩😍😍
To be honest with you Super Mario Galaxy is irreplaceable to my heart. I think it one of the best 3D Mario game ever.. just look at it!!! Ahhhh... nostalgia ❤
Thank you for the lengthy and thorough analysis of these games. I also want to commend you for not shitting on Super Mario Sunshine like so many people seem to do. I feel the game gets such a bad reputation just because it's not a direct sequel to Super Mario 64 like so many people wanted it to be back in the day. Despite its flaws if you take the game at face value, it's actually a pretty fun experience and very unique for a mainline Mario title. Quite underrated actually.
3D land was the only game I ever finished 100%. After collecting all of the starcoins in all of the 16 worlds and finishing them with both mario and luigi with the golden flag you unlock a secret insanely hard lavel. That game was truly a good game.
My personal favorites were 3D Land and 3D World, I really loved the levels, and they just feel like a simple, fun, and a little challenging game, that’s why they are my favorite.
Super Mario 64 ds is like 50% a remake 50% a new game and more like it’s own thing In fact I would consider it more of a remix of the original Mario 64 rather than a remake It’s also probably where all the Mario 64 DD concepts went like playable Luigi for example
I think it's worth mentioning, about the whole "L is real 2401" thing. If you look closer it actually says "Eternal Star" which makes a lot more sense. Crazy coincidence though nonetheless.
fell asleep to a random youtube video and woke up to you praising super mario 3d land so i know the videos good will watch the rest when i'm not unconscious
i had a dream while i fell asleep to this, it was a game for some reason it opened to a sunset then to a facility of some sorts the player was just a square and you have to chase a bigger square but if you touched a door on the left [a door = a line of dark grey pixels] you would turn blue, get sun-glasses then split into a lot of tiny squares with no face that are red and chase after the bigger square which stopped to look then you easily catch him then the game resets [also there were triggers i think?]
Its so refreshing seeing someone give 3D land the respect it deserves. Maybe it’s because of nostalgia and the fact that I haven’t played 3D world yet but it’s my favorite mario game and I barely see anyone talk about it which kinda sucks since the levels are so fun
1:13:34 Yeah dynamic Music is such a underated feature. Jak II and Jak 3 are perfect to see how different it feels. Jak II has dynamic music, that changes based on if you are on foot, the Jetboard, have a gun out, enemys attacking. Because of this every enemy encounter feels action packed and important. Play Jak 3 after it, where the dynamic music is missing and any enemy encounter feels boring, lacks of impact. Because nothing changes about the atmosphear.
Considering Sunshine was made in only 18 months is astonishing and a testament to the ones working on the game. It may not be the best Mario game but its certainly nothing to scoff at.
I always loved how super mario 64 was made. It didn’t make you go one way and let you do almost anything. It was awesome. And I would ALWAYS play 64 DS on long car rides
Mario 64 is still my favorite 3D Mario. There’s something so charming about the graphics, the soundtrack, the sometimes wacky controls and camera (Lakitu!). But I love it. While Mario Galaxy is IMO the overall best 3D Mario title, 64 remains my favorite. Love these kind of videos.
37:34 I actually straight up enjoyed both of those segments. Thought they would make decent mini games in Mario party. The blooper riding was harder but once mastered was very enjoyable.
This video is perfect. I wish it was 9 hours long because I love deep dives but you manage to say so much in 30ish minutes for each game that it has the content of a 9 hour vid. Kudos
"Miyamoto, the director of almost every mainline Mario and Zelda game" Not quite. He directed the 8-bit Mario titles and returned to direct 64 and his only directing credit in the entire Zelda franchise is the first game. He didn't direct any of the Pikmin games either, despite people commonly believing otherwise. With the exception of Super Mario 64 and the first two Star Fox games (where he was lead game designer not director) Miyamoto has only worked as a producer since the end of the NES/Famicom era.
Having never played them I disagree. I enjoy hearing how the game made someone feel and not just technical gameplay...there are heaps of those already.
2272, Tokyo. The last living gaming historian who keeps records of pre-internet electronic gaming consoles is killed in a botched medical procedure. The legacy of Super Mario 64, and all games made before mass pod-living acceptance, is dead.
I like that they call it the ‘sand bird’. I believe the pyramids are not made of quarried stones but rather wet sand poured like a concrete or gepolymer which dries and hardens. Japanese know this, too.
Sm64 was the first 3d video game I’ve ever played. Before that, I loved the Mario games, I loved seeing how fast I could go through the levels. But when I started playing sm64 i literally didn’t stop playing. I was like 7 at the time, so I don’t remember much, but I could never get the stars. It was so hard to control Mario and get him to do what I wanted. But I didn’t care, I had fun. I’ll never forget that game. And I was absolutely obsessed wit L is real 2401. I watched videos about people explaining their theories and I even had my own. I think one of the reasons I love this game so much is because of the situation I was in when I was young. My parents were arguing and wouldn’t stop. I went in the basement for some reason, (I don’t remember why) and I saw the game. I went to my arguing parents and asked them to play with me. We all sit down while we took turns dying. My parents didn’t argue the whole time. My parents aren’t together anymore, but it doesn’t change how I see the game.
well yeah 3ds Mario 64 is playable (I actually did a 31 star speedrun on my save file) but unless you have a New 3DS the game doesn’t run well at all, slowing down m constantly on levels that usually don’t lag
Sunshine is still incredibly underrated, even to this day. Gets no respect for how unique it was relative to the other titles. Mario controls like a dream in that game.

for some reason it opened to a sunset then to a facility of some sorts
the player was just a square
and you have to chase a bigger square
but if you touched a door on the left [a door = a line of dark grey pixels]
you would turn blue, get sun-glasses
then split into a lot of tiny squares with no face that are red
and chase after the bigger square which stopped to look
then you easily catch him
then the game resets
[also there were triggers i think?]
Its so refreshing seeing someone give 3D land the respect it deserves. Maybe it’s because of nostalgia and the fact that I haven’t played 3D world yet but it’s my favorite mario game and I barely see anyone talk about it which kinda sucks since the levels are so fun
Aggreed
i watched so many mario ice berg videos this summer... time to watch some more mario!
Thank you for making me realize I was dumb to ever get rid of Mario 3D World for Switch! Got a used copy at Gamestop today! Great video! :)
Dude, I'm not gonna lie, the controls of SM64 DS is why I never completed that game as a kid, barely touched it because of that reason.
That was the first game I beat as a Kid
I never had any issues with the sandbird or the lily pad in sunshine, even as a kid. The lava boat and the pachinko machine on the other hand... 😅
Im surprised he didn’t mention the giant sting ray
Wow Mario 64 came out 27 years ago today! (September 26th 2023)
4:07 I wonder if miomoto did a BLJ to show how it was meant to look.
Considering Sunshine was made in only 18 months is astonishing and a testament to the ones working on the game. It may not be the best Mario game but its certainly nothing to scoff at.
Your commentary reminds me of Summoning Salt! Very nice to gently fall asleep along.
37:34
I actually straight up enjoyed both of those segments.
Kudos
“Assuming the sexuality of bowser” had me ROLLING
They nailed it with Odyssey I can 100% see 64 and Sunshine inspiration from Odyssey but it's also completely different
59:39 he isn't running for his life! He's running INTO battle, to save Peach!
"Miyamoto, the director of almost every mainline Mario and Zelda game"
Not quite.
Thank for actually giving us high quality Mario content to quench my thirst.
Awesome work dude. You deserve way more subs.
Wish these videos didn't have so much forced emotion in the scripts, but I do love seeing these old games.
Yeah it’s too overly dramatic. Lol 😂
UA-cam video essays be like.
I forgot how truly great Mario odyssey was until I watched this video. Now I’m wanting to finally complete it
Wish me luck…
You're growing dude! I've been following you since some months ago. Congratulations!
I fell asleep a couple hours ago with Autoplay on and woke up watching this. Now I wanna download an emulator
If you have a 3DS Mario 64 is playable but you have to mod your system
well yeah 3ds Mario 64 is playable (I actually did a 31 star speedrun on my save file) but unless you have a New 3DS the game doesn’t run well at all, slowing down m constantly on levels that usually don’t lag
About bowser's fury. Mario did not "reluctantly" agree, he's a hero!
1:51:28 my favorite game series is the legend of Zelda and I remember being so excited when I got to this part of the game.
Great retrospective!
Now I know what I’m binging today
you dont need all the shadow mario shine sprites to get to the mountain, you just need to progress enough to get the rocket nose
2:31 "But then a year later they let Philips release this shit" 😆🤣
Oh my god I fell asleep with this playing and I heard every second in my dream. Mental
SAME WTF
i don't get the moon complaint, i like being able to go anywhere and find one, makes exploring feel worth it. it's also funt to complete, idk
