It sounds like you have a lot of external pressure trying to force you into a particular direction, in contrast to an internal pressure that is driving you toward what you truly want in life. I could also simply be projecting my issues on to you. If so, I apologize.

I skipped most of highschool till the 10th grade which was when I dropped out and was thinking about killing myself. Later I went to a college with a work-at-your-own-pace program for highschool credits. They basically gave all the responsibility to the students to whether or not they wanted to show up or even do work and they treated me like an actual human rather than some piece of shit. So basically I showed up 10 minutes early for class every day(each day was only 2 hours) and aced all my courses and finished highschool much earlier than my friends, and much happier too.

Your procrastination videos really are a service to the world that everyone should see.
I got in a lot of conflict with my parents when I refused to go for a steady, safe, work your whole life comfortably in an office, job - that pays like 2x the average salary. Instead I decided to be a free man, doing my own business.
A year later - I earned what an average person earns in a decade here (and that's me being cheap because I don't have a giant resume, so I wanted to attract with price), while doing work I love and that I choose or refuse to do.
I work from home - a home that I bought from that year's salary.
For some reason, the people who were advising me to go the first path either hate talking to me about my business, or live in denial about how successful you can be as an individual.
A company that pays you 6 figures is earning 7 figures off of you.

Or should i just follow the path of misery and it will make sense later"

    • @rossmanngroup
      @rossmanngroup  7 років тому +142

It's not a silly question. I didn't trust that anything will make sense later. There should be a clear vision now as to why I am doing something. Just 7 minutes in, and I like the conclusion you come to. However, I don't know if I agree that procrastination is the response to oppression. I understand why you arrived upon that word, given that your example fits it well. But using myself as an example, procrastination comes as a result of anxiety which stems from the knowledge of impending unfavorable circumstances. More specifically, I'm sitting here since 9AM watching youtube videos in a warm house on a comfortable couch, procrastinating about going to the garage to tinker on a project because of how cold it is. Though, if I make the conscious decision to weigh the risk (cold temps) vs the reward (feeling accomplished, enjoying the end result of the project) I can justify in my mind the decision to go outside and brave the cold.

You are a free man... You can make your garage warm and cozy so you can work... Or you can ditch your project since it doesn't matter to you... You are not obligated to recieve the reward... You are a free man...

this is easily one of my favorite videos on the internet. I stop by this once and a while to remind myself that you have the true freedom to make your own choices, no matter what situation you are in. I think people get so caught up in a daily routine that they completely forget why they're doing it in the first place - like a full-time job. And it leads them down a negative path of depression. On top of the nihilistic perspective/feeling that being a slave to the routine gets you. You forget the big picture. I hope you make more videos like this in the future because I look forward to these more than I do the amazing repair videos. Thanks Louis.

One of my biggest realizations that kills me a little inside is: what I want, I don't really want as bad as I think I want it. I take pleasure in living a comfortable, mediocre life. I want to finish an album and start my own record label, but I think to myself, "As long as I work on it here and there that'll be good enough, I'll eventually achieve that goal just much later than I should." I want to get into investing but I think to myself, "I already make enough money to live the lifestyle I am currently living." I'm content, but complacency seems to be my current obstacle.

It opened my eyes to the reality, that something that I chose to do and invest my time, effort and work into is worth infinitely more, than all that other stuff I did, because I was "supposed" to. This is actually interesting to hear as a parent. I always want my children to have choices and make good choices, unfortunately explaining consequences to children is difficult. They don't have an adult's patience. Still, it is important.
Also, sometimes you are still a peon because the consequences are not always proportional or fair. That's where it becomes important to prioritize. What unfairness will you tolerate? What unfairness would you give your life for fighting? If we are really talking about oppression, it is life or death.

I have a job I really like, where to my boss and coworkers think I'm some sort of magician (I'm good at low level languages, linux, terminals, cloud infrastructure and servers). But I've been lacking a lot on it, I'm lazy at the job, and I miss most deadlines, really sloppy right now tbh; they started to see that I'm falling behind a ton. I've been trying to figure out why am I doing this.
I now realize this problem Is directy related to my relationship with my gf, who lives with me. Things are not good between us, and she has been very abusive, dependant, toxic and disrespectful of my time. I really feel I can't do shit without attending to her, without explaining myself to her, and without putting her first. Not even a 1hour videogame match without me being interrupted or requested to do something.
During work hours she doesn't bother me that much (still does to some degree, as I work from home), so when she isn't around, I procrastinate, I get that small little freedom I can get, even if it's watching a random video, opening social media, etc.
I need to step up to her and set things right, even if our lives are SO intertwined together (family, friends, hobbies, same house), it's not the end of the world, I can rent some random place and start over from there I guess.
    Thanks Louis.

In my opinion procrastination as lots to do with a lack of self confidence and fear of failure. You can say you are free man but you may be not if you don't belive enough in yourself. "Failure on a logistical level can expose what feels like an inadequate, child-like or vulnerable self. If I try and don’t succeed, everyone will know I’m _________.
You can fill in the blank with your own worst nightmare - stupid, weak, unworthy, etc. That’s a much harder prospect to deal with than a simple loss of resource".
I agree with you on some points but I'm afraid you should have better consider that aspect as well. I wonder why when I'm under pressure would I ever consider to put things off in stead of full accomplish the required task? Why it's so hard for somebody to accomplish in stead of procrastinate (me included of course)? Do you think most of the success people did their home works just because they were not free or because of mom's request or just because they where allready free from other kind of self defence mechanism? I mean what's wrong with feeling free just after have accomplished the required task? I consider myself not free at all whenever I put things off and that's what actually tell's me I'm inadequate lovering my self esteem and make me procrastinate the next task as well... I'll feel myself a better and free man everytime I get rid of my ridicolous procrastination attitude.
