Name Explain Bosnia has five regions. Krajina, Posavina, Upper Bosnia, Podrinje, and Herzegovina. The country was always called just Bosnia, but Ottoman empire and Austro-Hungary changed that and they added Herzegovina to the name of the country. But that doesn't change the fact that Herzegovina is just one of the bosnian regions (southern Bosnia) and one day (and that day will come) we will change the name of our country back to Bosnia. Republic of Bosnia. Cheers!
What is with the former Czechoslovakia , or Pakistan which is a combination of its states name
andrew may I’ve looked over Czechoslovakia’s name in my Slovakia Slovenia video and I know about Pakistan’s name, it’s such an interesting story and will definitely be a video in the future! :D
why does the middle East have so many "-stans"?

That must have been the worst pronunciation of Stjepan Vukčić Kosača's name i've ever heard. But the rest of the video was pretty accurate.
He just ignored "j" in Stjepan, while adding the second "k" in Kosača. Even as a non-South Slavic speaker, I can't comprehend how he did that.
Vitalis Oh, yeah. As a native speaker it just hurts hearing it said like that. But at the same time it's funny, since i know how hard the language si
how about vushkich, one more lapsus? but no one mentioned: one nation? errr...ok , if for example the USA are one nation, then fine, you see it that way
Don't worry I'd do worse.
whereas you pronounce everyone's name perfectly I suppose. No-one pronounces everything correctly. It's impossible
Well, in the past, there have been a lot of combined countries. Maybe for the next video?
Austria-Hungary, Chechoslovakia, Poland-Lithouania etc.
Let's call them Ausgary, Checzvakia, and Polithuania.
"Poland Lithuania" is actually Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth. "Polish" and "Lithuanian" are adjectives. Not names.
*Czechoslovakia
Czechoslovakia* and Poland-Lithuania*
I call Austria-Hungary Austrohungaria because it was the Austrohungarian Empire, and it's the same way they named Czechoslovakia. An easier name for Poland-Lithuania would be Pololitva or Politva (Litva is Lithuania in Lithuanian)
THE GZ except those places don't collectively exist anymore

Why is Galicia a region in spain and also the name of a region is eastern europe
It's just the English name that's the same. Well, Germanic, to be exact. Eastern European Galicia is the latinization of the Russian/Ukrainian name Halych. What's the etymology of the word Halych, well.. That's unknown. Some historians tried to connect the name Galicia to the Celts (that's where Spanish Galicia got it's name from, as there were Gauls/Celts in Spain at some point), and point to the word 'hal', meaning salt in Celtic. But honestly, we just don't know...
In German it's called Galizien. In Polish Galicja
In all slavic languages It is either Galicija, Galič/ć . Even tho Ukranians say Halych. THey say it with a H bcs Ukranian doesn't actualyl have the G letter. While all other slavic lanuages do.
In Polish Halicz/Ruś Halicka and Galicja are two different things - the former referring to the state which existed before being conquered by Poland and the latter to the region of the Austrian Empire after the partitions. Their territories are quite significantly different.
Why in English european country Gruzia is called Gorgia like state in USA
You have made a mistake on your map Bosnia & Herzegovina is a country with sea acces Neum is the place that is connected with the sea and is part of Bosnia & Herzegovina
I know Yugoslavian Member States Borders very well
I am from algezaïr🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿 and I noticed this, too peace to Bosnians brothers
Greetings to Bosnia and Herzegovina from Macedonia!! BROs
From Former Yugoslavian Macedonia? Or from the part of modern Greece known as Macedonia?
Macedonia - country. Region of Greece is Makedonia
Slashplite Makedonia is the transtileration from greek. Ahh, the whole region is called Macedonia - Vardar Macedonia, Aegean Macedonia and Pirin Macedonia.
Bugari i Grci mogu da odjebe jer Makedonci i Bosanci su braca!!!
When you speak of "Bosanci" as bro's do you mean the croatian bosnians, serbian bosnias or bosniak bosnians? Its not the same, and you cant say the whole country of Bosnia because political divison in the country is very harsh and divided on ethnic and religistic terms
Thank you so much i am a bosnian
Any Herzegovinians here?

I find it odd that someone from The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland thinks Bosnia-Herzegovina is complex :)
I did go to the trouble of explaining on your "Führer"-video that "Herzog" is a German word which also effectively means "leader" (albeit a military one). Other languages have it from us, not the other way round. So once more: it is a compound of "Heer" (army) and "Zog" (cognate with English "tug") meaning "lead out". Its derivation and development parallel those of the word "Duke".
Like Old English "here" meaning army as in "mycel hæþen here"
I think modern English "hoard" is a cognate
It should be called "the 50 United States of Central North America."
BTW, US of America is more of that stupid Continentalism.
No, it should be called "the 50 United States of Central North America on Earth in the Milkyway
Brian Diehl exacly XF
Kaiser Wilhelm id drop the 50 because there could always be more in the future but yea. The Americas are two whole continents which the US is only in one of. It's like if China called itself "The people's republic of Eurasia"
How about just America and you really need to study America.
Aaand as always,
Slavic words are always butchered
Tesla-Effect they also talk worlds in the hardest languages ferfectly
But slavic always butcher
Too true
I don't mind. English speakers don't have enough sounds to imitate Slavic languages

Such a gluing word creation is typical for antiethymological American English. European languages keep a cultivated treatment of word stems, prefixes and suffixes.
I always thought about this, thank you for making the video
Thanks for this. I needed to know this before I die. Always wondered about this strange name.
All completely accurate (pronunciation aside), but I just wanna point out how funny hearing "Ivan Planina Mountain" was. Planina means mountain in our language, so you basically said Ivan mountain mountain. Keep up the great work
serbian word ''herzog'' wtf and why did you skip the fact that Bosnia was a kingdom since 10 up to 14th century and had it's own coins and royal dynasty. Also why did you skip the fact that the country was called Bosnia until Austro Hungarian occupation, it was the Austrians who gave a country two names during the Berlin congress. The AH monarchy pressured under Russia wanted to create two states one called Bosnia and other called Herzegowina. But they backed down after Istanbul convention in 1890 keeping the country united but under two names-

in 1:27 you claim the german "Herzog" would come from old serbian "herceg", which is bs, "Herzog" is a germanic composit of the word for army (in modern German "Heer") and lead (in this case "(voran)ziehen") (cf. www.dwds.de/wb/Herzog ) the old church slavonic word "herceg" might be an adaptation of the german word but not vice versa
Your link has the problem that the ')' after gets taken as a part of it messing up the search.
majan this is super correct
majan wait does the serbian use herceg?
In hungary herceg means prince.
majan in german Herz si Heart. Where is the conection here?
Herzog is a German equivalent of Serbian/Slavic title vojvoda and vojvoda literally means warlord. There was no word "herceg" in Old church slavonic. The make of the video made a mistake.
It is in reality just Bosnia (Bosna). Hercegovina is just a region of Bosna just like Semberija, Bosanska Krajina, Posavina, etc.
Really interesting video!Thank you :)
Greetings from Belgrade!!!
FINALLY MY COUNTRY IS NAMED IN A VIDEO. THANK YOU SO MUCH
----------------------------
NAPOKON IME MOJE ZEMLJE JE SPOMENUTO U VIDEU. HVALA PUNO!
This was uploaded three days ago, and there's still no ex-Yugoslavs fighting over nationalist BS. I'm amazed.
The actual name of mexico is United Mexican States
Roger López I did think that should have been included at the end of the video too!
Historical Review, That's the old name, since 1968 the official name is the Federative Republic of Brazil
no, I think only 4 countries that have word "United" in them...
USA, Mexico, UAE, Tanzania
I don't include UK for... some reasons...
The traditional (and former) official formal name for Mexico was *United Mexican States*; however, people have recently started to refer formally to it as *Republic Of Mexico*. Its westernmost peninusla, called Baja (Lower) California comprises of 2 of its states, Baja Norte and Baja Sur!
I live in Bosnia and Herzegovina and its a beautiful country❤️
Correction: It's 3 nations (Bosnia, Republika Srpska, Dalmatian Croatia), 2 names (Bosnia and Herzegovina), and 1 country.
Why Netherlands call their people as Dutch Instead of Netherlanders??
THIS IS MY 54TH PETITION!!!
- Denmark
- Switzerland
- Philippines
- Madagascar
YouCan'tAlwaysGet WhatYouWant Dutch is the English word for it, it originally meant anyone who spoke a Germanic language. Also actual Dutch people, along with Germans and I'm sure others call people from the Netherlands, Nederlanders :) Hope that helps :)
Bosnia is the whole country. Bosnia is also Hercegovina. The double name was imposed on the entire country of Bosnia from the west in order to be able to split the country one day. As always, the divide and rule principle applies here as we know it very well from the West. Hercegovina is not a separate country or another country. It never was. All this is the country of Bosnia and this region is called Hercegovina. Just like in Bosnia the region Bos. Krajina and Podrinje and Bos. Posavina gives. These are all regions like Hercegovina in Bosnia.
The double name is a trap and a curse that anti-Bosnian forces from the west were eager to introduce.
I don’t know if you take suggestions, but there is one name I would like to see a video of. Since I was a kid I always wondered why the German city was called Baden-Baden. I realize I could google it in maybe 8 seconds, but that’s not as fun as learning it from a great video like this one.
Newfoundland AND Labrador....
Actually I would love a name exmplan for all Canadian provinces and territories! Maybe make one for the US too out of curiosity.
1993 to 1996 a "Croatian Republic Herceg-Bosna" was declared, consisting of the parts with a majority of ethnic Croatians.
Fake
Nice job, man! All Corect!
Bosgovina sounds cool though. Screw it, from now on, that's what I'm calling the country.
BoxGoneWinner
Feynstein 100
It certainly rolls off the tongue much easier than the current name! :D
Lol, sounds weird for a Slav…
+BertyFromDK True dat :D
Call it Bosgovna govno (govna) means SHIT XD
One country, two names, three presidents
And you even forgot to mention that the country exists of two autonomous entities in one: And no, that is not Bosnia at one side, and Herzegovina on the other. But: The Serbian Republic (Republika Sprska), not to be confused with Serbia, and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, not to be confused with the whole country of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Confusing.. right? :)
Maarten Brandts Buijs aj neseri vidjela bi se na mapi onda
I don't understand any word of that! Luckily Google does, but still doesn't understand 'Onda'. Please explain :)
Or is it that I forgot to mention the Brčko District?
Maarten Brandts Buijs he meant to say something like this:
Come on, don't shit cause it would be on the map then
Although, it's really hard to issue laws and things with two entities, cause both need to agree which doesn't happen often, and a high corruption in government is also bad
Maarten Brandts Buijs
"onda" = "then". He said: "Don't eat shit, it would be on the map then"
or "one would be able to see it on the map then".
There's no literal translation since our languages are different. I suggest you to try to translate one word after another on google translate. If you try to use google translate to translate whole sentrnce at once, it's a disaster...
You and Xander give a good explanation but you both are underrated
BiH has a strange way of governing itself; three distinct governments (one for the whole country, and two for its constituent parts [the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Republika Srpska]), three capitals (Banja Luka for Rep. Srpska, Sarajevo for Fed. BiH, and the free city of Brcko). No wonder things are very slow to get done over there, but fortunately the situation is improving somewhat.
Do ppl really investigate our country or our country is just interesting
If by improving you mean that half the country wants to secede then yes.
First part of your sentence is "strange". US do not have states? There isn't one govermenz for the US and another for e.g. Texas? And Washington DC is a state or "free city"?
So, BiH is a kind of union of two entities: Federation of BiH and Republika Srpska. Brčko District is autonomous as it is not part of the two entities, it is a self-governing "condominium". Capitals are: Sarajevo (BiH and Federation of BiH) and Banja Luka (Republika Srpska). What is interesting is that Republika Srpska is unitary entity, while Federation of BiH (as its name says) is a federation: it is composed of 10 semi-autonomous cantons.
There is a difference between the US and BiH, in that in the former, the federal government has clear influence over the individual states, and they aren't exactly autonomous as they have to comply with federal laws to govern themselves. In the latter case, the two autonomous entities are more or less equal with that of the federal government, making agreements between the triumvirate harder to come by.
Gameflyer001 It's very complicated when you're studying BiH law.
Finally!! I have been waiting so long for this video.
?

Thank you for making a videi about my home country

1:36 You've absolutely nailed the pronunciation there 😉
So true
For somebody who claims to care about names, you care surprisingly little about their correct pronunciation.
I do check pronunciation. There’s pronunciation sources in the description. I’m just awful at saying them :D
Name Explain The way you said Stjepan Vukčić Kosača man that hurts 😂😂
Why don't you learn the correct pronunciation of names and places then, given that you already looked them up? It is a matter of basic respect for other cultures. This "I can't even be bothered to pronounce your name correctly" attitude is just rude.
Styepan Vuckchich Kosacha
Tom Hase sorry not everyone has a Slavic accent.
I went to Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 23 2018 and it was so awesome
Thanks for the video. Though if someone is interested in a more accurate description of why the countr is actually called Bosnia and Herzegovina read this comment.
Herzegovina was never in the actual name of the country, it was a region that started of as Hum, then Zachlumia and then Herzegovina. However, the 1st time that the name Bosnia and Herzegovina shows up is in the 19th century, more specificaly 1831-1832 during the Bosnian war of Autonomy against the Ottoman Empire. As the Bosniak nobles defeated the Ottoman Army in Kosovo in the year of 1831, the Bosnian army went back to Bosnia. However, one of the Bosniak nobles who held what is today's Herzegovina, decided to cooperate with the Ottomans and betrayed the rest of the Bosniak Nobility, that nobles name was Ali Pasa Rizvanbegovic. Therefor he was awarded with an autonomus province that would be seperated from Bosnia, that province was the Sandzak of Herzegovina. About 20 years later the two provinces would be merged again into the Bosnian Vilayet. However the name Herzegovina stayed, and was adopted by the Austro Hungarian occupiers after the annexation of Bosnia. But, even so, today mostly people reffer to Bosnia just as Bosnia, leaving out the Herzegovina.
And that man was my ancestor, we still carry the lastname Rizvanbegovic not sure if I'm supposed to be proud or not.
2:06 i dont see the Neum!!
Pozdrav iz Srbije, odlicno uradjeno !

Herzegovina was part of Serbia long before Bosnia came into existence.
A zvalo se Kjngdom of Bosnia.Imali pola hrvatske na moru i hercegovinu danas.Et ne srbija.I onda turci pa onda et onda
BTW, do make an episode about Brazil. It has a fascinating etymology.
You weren't in the feed but thank god the notification Bell finally worked
Bosnia and Hercegovina were originally provinces of Serbia over time the two separate provinces merged into one province which separated from Serbia and became known as a “country”. It is in actuality simply referred to and know as “Bosnia”.
Herzegovina is in the name though coz it it always had separate status due it being the personal possession Duchy of the Duke who ruled over whole of Bosnia in past as Grand Duke ...defacto a King. Kind of similar how the King of U.K. is also the Prince of Wales.
U.K. after all is just shorthand for the United Kingdom(s) of England & Scotland, the Principality Of Wales & The Lordship of Northern Ireland.
Great video, as always! It would be interesting to make a video about relation of name of Albania and Caucasian Albania!
asphalatos1 there is no relation. Only a coincidence
Partially you have right , when you explained what is the meaning of The word Bosnia. I said partially, because country Bosnia is not named according to river called Bosnia.... but the whole region is named Bosnia because it has a lot of rivers and water surfaces. And hear is the big difference. Bosnia dated from the begining from 9 century, Herzegowina was formed later with goal to take this Part of the land from Bosnia. During the period of ruling Herzog- Stjepan Kosaca- Herzegowina. in the 16 century as seperate unit didn't t exist because Herzog was Bosniak ruler
hercegovina is where the Croats live
Thank you (hvala) for this video, finally.
Herzegovina, in a nutshell, pretty much is just a geographic location.
The real division would be Bosnia & Rep. Srpska
But people here don't really care, we just call our country "Bosnia"
The real division is actually Federation & Rep. Srpska & Brcko DC
Cursor Eu good to know XD. Similar thing in my country. We just say "The U.K." Instead of "Great Britain and Northern Ireland" which takes way to long too actually say Lol.
Patriot Bro it does espacially in the 90's when the war began not only that since the begin of (ex) Yugoslavia it was a important piece of land
You are wrong people care Serbs who live in Rep. Srpska call it Republika Srpska while people who live in the federation of BiH they call it Bosnia and Brcko is Srpska
Cursor Eu lmao wut?
I would have been pissed if he hadn’t mentioned Trinidad and Tobago, but lo and behold it was the the last one he said.

Usually when foreigners first hear Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, they think federal subjects are Bosnia and Herzegovina. If it were that simple... One federal subject is Republic of Srpska, the other one is...Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Yup, a federation inside a federation...bearing exactly the same name. Oh, and both Srpska and (lesser) Federation of B&H cover parts of geographic regions of both Bosnia and Herzegovina. Last and least is Brčko District, which belongs to neither Srpska nor Federation (yes, lesser one), but luckily, is entirely in the region of Bosnia (otherwise it would be too complicated :)
I live ln Bosnia Herzegovina.

Hey Name Explain, I'm from Bosnia and Herzegovina. So to think I'm lying, I will speak my language: hej Name Explain jako mi je drago što je barem netko snimio o Bosni i Hercegovini, i stvarno sam sretan zbog toga. And there you go, proof that I'm a Bosnian, and I almost forgot, YOU ARE THE BEST.

Great video! How ever I would like to mention that Herceg is an old Bosnian word and not serbian as the Serbian language was based on the Bosnian one. Anyway, the video is cool 👐
This is a wide deception of Muslim people from Bosnia, believing that there is a separate language called Bosnian just because there was a Bosnian dictionary made up in 17th century but people don't know that "bosnian" language used in the dictionary does not have any similarities with the language spoken today, because it was old slavonic language and written in arabic letters which is really wierd.
What Ever Let me first say that I'm not muslim, but I do accept the facts that the Bosnian language existed a couple of hundared years before the Serbian language did. So pls, let's not have some discussions because we can't change the reality and facts. If you want to speak Bosnian and say it's Serbian, well that's fine by me. I won't force anyone, but the facts has to be mentioned and accepted. 😊
IG / Herzog comes from German, not from Bosnians nor Serbian
tgghgf hfghgf I don't know. Maybe it is. Probably there is no 100% correct answer when it comes to this topic. The only thing I wanted to mention is that it's impossible to claim that somethings comes from serbian when serbian language in fact was based on the Bosnian one.
the word Herzog derives from Hungarian and it means prince, therefore it was the land of the prince Stefan Kosaca. About the language I dont want to go to dispute, you believe there is a different bosnian language I lay claim that it is the same language as Serbian, agree to disagree end of the story I wont make you think otherwise you wont make me.
Your map missed out on the coastline, which cuts Croatia into two parts not counting the islands
I sometimes call it or write Bosnia
James Humphreys which is incorrect because people from Herzegovina don't see themselves as Bosnians
Slashplite Im from the largest city in Herzegovina and I am a Bosniak(etnicity) and Bosnian/Herzegovian geographicly
Slashplite Herzegovian is a geographic term ,etnicity is bosniak
yes but bosnian does not equall herzegovinian or ? Because both are geographic terms which put together form a country of Bosnia and Herzegovina in which three nations Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats live if im not mistaken
What Ever three nationalities(bosniaks,croats,serbs,one nation(Bosnia and Herzegovina),two geographic names(bosnian,herzegovian)
If germany and austria united austria is to germany what herzegovina is to bosnia
I live in bosnia and herzegovina and i see this, now i belive that we are still here and we arent forgotten
Herzegovina name is product of the Ottomans occupation of Bosnia and later Austro-Hungarian Empire leave that in name of the country for theirs occupation reasons. Actualy teritory which someone call today "Herzegovina" is also part of the Bosnia. No, "Ivan Planina" is not border between Bosnia on one side and Herzegovina on another side. From boith sides is Bosnia, Herzegovina is part of the Bosnia.
It's like United Kingdoms not being united and fighting till it's time to play "Kingdom" roles.
i live there
and im confused too
no one nation in BIH, there are three. Serbs, Croats and invented Muslims with big M, technically croats and serbs converted in islam during ottoman occupation
Lolz where did you get that trash from? Ilija Garašanin said in 1844 that in Bosnia there is one nation - Bosniaks, which contains orthodox Bosniaks, catholic Bosniaks and "Muhamedan" Bosniaks. The so-called "Bosnian Serbs" and "Bosnian Croats" were invented during the Austro-Hungarian occupation.

Hello from Bosnia & Herzegovina! I live in Bosnia and Herzegovina
So called "Bosnians" in the comment section pretending that they have history and trying to deny the fact that they are SERBS
Velika srbija a kroz historiju sve manji 😂
So B&H is named like an island colony. Seeing how that country functions now and it's history of being an Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman colony it's a fitting way to name that entity.
In Bosnia there Are two states in one Muslim and Croat and the other Is the Republic of Srpska
