    Similar conversions to Islam occurred in Bulgaria too, although in a much smaller scale. In fact, a small part of the Bulgarian Bogomils/Paulicians, who were considered heretics by the Orthodox church, embraced the Catholic fate in the 16th-17-th century. Even today there are two small municipalities with a predominant Catholic population - one in North Bulgaria (Belene) and one in South Bulgaria (Rakovski). As to the Muslim Bulgarians, they represent probably about 1% of the modern Bulgarian population. And last but not least, there were various attempts for re-Christianization of the Muslim Bulgarians but there was never a consistent state policy in this direction. What seems to have worked, was the atheist propaganda during the Communism, which affected all religious communities in Bulgaria.

    Bosnians had probably accepted Islam due to a combination of factors. Obviously tolerance was one of them, but also many sources claim one of the tenets of the Bosnian church was that they refused to worship the cross, seeing it as bizarre that other Christians worshipped that which had killed Jesus (and some even debate on whether or not they believed Jesus was God or just a prophet of God). This is much closer to Islamic belief, so perhaps the change was not so radical for Bosnians.

      "Obviously tolerance was a factor"
      The Ottoman Turks introduced a special tax on Christians in Bosnia. Roman Catholics were discriminated more compared to the Orthodox Christian who had the "Millet System" under the Ottoman Turkish rule.
      "many sources claim one of the tenets of the Bosnian church..."
      Actually that "Bosnian Church" ( or Bogomil sect) died out before the Ottoman Turks arrived. They were all converted by the Roman Catholic Franciscan monks in Bosnia on orders from the Pope ( Papal Bull still exists in the Vatican as evidence).

      What nation of Bosnia? Do you mean those that were brought from all over Ottoman empire or the natives? Natives mostly carry Serbian orthodox last names. There were so many migrations in Bosnia, Montenegro, Serbia and back. After each rebellion, people would move to another ottoman province. The best part of the Bosnian saga is that even administrative lines changed over time. That means that parts of today's Croatia and Serbia were in Bosnia.

    I live in Bosnia and this is literally what we learn about how Islam came to Bosnia as well. It's not much different really, except our teacher used to tell us that Bosnian church wasn't really similar to Catholic and Orthodox churches of the time. Apparently Bosnian church denied trinity, also did not pray towards a cross, and did not allow church hierarchy that was present in other churches. So like the way it was explained to me was: Bosnian church definitely stemmed from Christianity, but it had some major differences that made it qualify as heretics. Also they absolutely despised the practice of "indulgence", aka paying to the church so that they suffer less in hell- which was practiced in Christianity. Plus, Bosnians didn't really pray the way Christians did, there isn't any specific rituals that can be pointed out really. They also didn't care much about religion in the first place apparently.. According to what my professor said, the prayer was more of a "talking to God" type of thing?
    Along with all that, the constant pressure which you mentioned also made people of Bosnia "cold" towards Christianity. Considering also Islam had many similarities to the Bosnian church (at the time), with the "incentive to convert" rather than force, I think was enough to "soften" many Bosnians towards Islam. According to what I've also heard, Ottomans would kidnap non-Muslim kids for janissaries- but Muslim Bosnians would go on to join janissaries themselves very often. Like families would send their sons while kids to train with janissaries. I am a Muslim (my family really has entirely Montenegrian roots), and I have heard stories by my grandparents about their elders (there is a lot about my family that was written and told to others) going to Istanbul for either military education voluntarily, or just simply going to serve the army, or go get education. I'm not sure how correct all of it is, there isn't much to talk about when it comes to Bosnia as there isn't many records.
    P.S.: Watch out for the Serbs, Croats and Bosniaks in the comments trying to say ban Kulin or king Tvrtko was either of those. One of them is Bosnian bogumil, other Bosnian catholic. Go on and fight until your fingers fall off from typing.

    • @personaldove
      @personaldove 2 роки тому +28

      I disagree with that.
      The Ottoman policy was divide and rule.They would Islamize certain regions of the Balkans like in Greece, Bosnia, Albania and Bulgaria to ensure that their vassals had control over the nomadic Christians.
      No Christian family willingly sent their sons to Constantinople.
      By that logic all the Uyghur muslims voluntarily gave their children to Chinese Maoists who took them to Beijing to become great officers.

      Its the difference between European style colonization started by the Greeks and the Romans where they essentially "cleanse" the lands they colonize from their natives and emigrate their own peoples to live their compared to the Islamic empires where religious tolerance is the basis of conquest. Its why its very rare to hear of witch hunts in Muslim nations (Not that it didn't happen but much rarer).
      Unfortunately, History also teaches us that ultimately the European style is the one that won out in the end. Evidence to that how the New World is basically an extension of European culture

      I don't know if you know it, but after Alexander's conquest, Greek became lingua franca of Anatolia. In 197 BC Rome conquers Greece and after a while Anatolia. We see that Greek language in Anatolia remained even UNDER ROMAN RULE, just like in Sicily and the Levant until the Arab conquest. Anatolia was under Greek rule for about 130 years and under Roman for centuries. Despite that Greek language prevailed. Also, in Anatolia there were also large populations of Greeks since 12th century BC, who migrated there after the Bronze Age collapse. By the time of Alexander's conquest, Greeks were already one of the largest, if not the largest, population. For example, the kingdom of Pontus was ruled by Persian dynasty but the official language was Greek, just like the religion with some Persian gods. Although Greek language survived for centuries, it became extinct in Anatolia just in some years after the ottoman rule. So, don't try to blame others in order to feel better

    Tattooing of the hands was a widespread tradition among Roman Catholic Croatian women in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Ottoman rule centuries ago.
    This tradition originates from the places once occupied by the Turks and its purpose was to prevent young, Catholic women being kidnapped and converted to Islam....
    Traditional symbols included crosses, sometimes tattooed around the women’s wrist so that they looked like bracelets. The cross also has its variations in the form of a small pine tree...The custom was practiced in Central and Southern Bosnia, around the town of Jajce, as well as Rama, Uskoplje, Kupres and Kraljeva Sutjeska...

    I really liked the video. There are few things i would like to add.
    Bogomils played key role in creation of Bosnian church. Bogomils were a heretic group named after their leader Bogomil. They originated from Bulgaria, but were expelled to Serbia and from Serbia they were expelled to Bosnia (by Stefan Nemanja). Instead of expelling them Kulin ban (ban of Bosnia) and his people accepted them and their values which were pretty similar to the values early christianity proposed.
    There are some indications that Bosnian church was already fading even before Ottomans came. Chrstianity was prevailing, especially catholic Christianity. Last Bosnian king was cathlolic and many Bosnian lords were either catholic or ortodox (like Vlatko Vuković) by 14th and 15th century.
    The resistence of Bosnia to Ottomans wasnt as stiff as you said. Bosnian duke Vlatko Vuković did defeat Ottomans in battle of Bileća in 1388 and participated in battle of Kosovo next year, but other than that there wasnt more important battles in which Bosnia participated, mostly skirmishes. Bosnia fell to Mehmed the Conqueror in 1463 (4 years after Serbia) without much trouble.
    Finally, you made small mistake at the end. Bosnian uprising of 1831 didnt even come close to liberating Bosnia from Ottomans. It was important, but Ottomans put it down after a year or so and went on to rule Bosnia for 50 more years, untill 1878.
    Anyway great video, keep up with great content.

    They were plenty of conversion throughout the empire.From Greeks, Georgians, Armenians etc. Most of those eventually assimilated into becoming part of todays Turks. In Bosna, Albania and some other places conversion did not lead to assimilation.

    • @andrelopes3889
      @andrelopes3889 2 роки тому +1

      Apparently, all the muslim converts (and descendants) from christian-majority ottoman provinces that fled to the remaining territories of the ottoman empire, and later the newly-formed turkish republic, in the aftermath of all the independence wars that occurred all over southeastern europe during the late 1890s-early 1900s, became "turkified" fairly swiftly due to a "turkish name law" that was implemented during the early days of Ataturk's rule. All the citizens living within turkey's borders had to adopt a turkish-origin surname. It end up dilluting ethnic divisions within post-ottoman turkey, with the intent of creating a somewhat homogenous populated country, not prone to future ethnic strife and conflicts. The kurds were the only minority that, still to this day, continue to resist turkish assimilation.
      As for the bosniaks and the albanians, i believe that nowadays there is a sizable number of turks that are of bosniak/slavic and albanian ancestry, if i'm Not mistaken. I think the reason both bosnia and albania remained muslim-majority countries/territories even after the end of ottoman rule was the fact that there wasnt an immediate persecution of the muslim population by non-muslim rulers, which might have prompted an immediate and massive population exodus into turkey. Unfortunely, the persecutions really did occur, many decades later, during the communist rule in Albania and mainly in Bosnia, during the break-up of Yugoslavia.
