KSP Challenge - Launch To Orbit Without Any Controls
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 бер 2018
- From a live stream - I abused the new mission editor to control the rocket and launch a spacecraft into orbit. The mission editor can activate stages, measure altitude and time so by setting up the right launch conditions a vessel can be placed into a stable orbit. Although it took a few 'simulations' to make it work :)

" when you cant program a rocket right" you will not go to space today
So, you heard Skye's song too! I loved it.
Looks like it would be trivial for Squad (or a modder) to create a stock answer to KOS, making a visual programming language to control rockets. Just add a few more triggers and functions and the existing mission builder could be used for full automation.
Joshua Sims I want now
It's probably going to be trickier than it looks (because, as a rule, everything technical is), but if there's enough demand...
i would like a block scripted autopilot much better for that purpose, the mission builder feels more like a content creation tool but that might just be me.
... so just add python?
Yes. Even though i'd too prefer bindings to regular languages (which exists as a mod), i can't picture how that would fit nicely into stock KSP. But a visual programming method, like is used in education sometimes (ie LEGO Mindstorm) could fit very nicely. Would also add to KSP's educational character.
So the rocket reached its high point at 4.20 you say...
I scrolled down for the comment.
i came here to make the same joke
what does 420 signify? been wondering for a while there. Where I come from, it's just a number that police records use for thieves.
Herbal Space Program
420 blaze it
Should have said, "we choose to put this water tower in space not because it's easy, but because it's hard to drink a vacuum"
Amazing. Can't wait for the control free moon episode.
Yeah...and not just a flyby or orbital insertion please. I want to see an automated landing.
Wonder how extensively this can be abused...I'm thinking scripted space battles, or sabotage missions.
Or with weapons I wonder if you could recreate XCOM in ksp.
i would already like an proper auto-lander with given coordinates, since mechjeb is very inaccurate on atmospheric bodies. dont get me wrong, i'm quite able to land myself, but i''m trying to recreate the falcon rockets
We, as the community, need to send Scott missions for him to do like Ryu and Dashie does with Mario Maker. Kerbal Maker Challenges!
CHALLENGE: fire a rocket in to orbit from the deepest point of Kerbin's ocean
Not possible since they added pressure damage :/
squad should definitely add KOS into the stock game
Or mechjeb hence the name or Gravity Turn. ;)
Finally! A way to land those primary stages while still achieving orbit with the secondaries!
Very great video Scott!
Hi Skott! Thanks for the video!
If I could turn back the time to when this came out, I would
I love these crazy challenges so many great things happen
6:38
“Minuteman is a three stage solid rocket... rocket.”
-Scott Manley 2018
I'm pretty sure it used an RCS System.
Scott Manley haha you did it again, “rc system system”
YOU SHOULD TOTALLY MAKE A SHIRT THAT SAYS 10/10 WOULD ROCKET AGAIN!!!
Hi Scott, I have a question, not sure where to ask it.
As we all already know the Chinese space station is tumbling in space and is expected to fall down into the atmosphere in a few weeks, assuming that we will have some debris surviving reentry and land on the ground. What will be the velocity on the debris when it hits the ground?
I know it will not be near orbital velocity since the atmosphere is dragging it and slowing it down, but do we have the calculation how much drag it gets and how much it slowed down? maybe to a test on Kerbal...
This is awesome
looks like you had fun :)
Well, You successfully made a light beacon in space. (applause in background)
"I'll try spinning, that's a good trick"
That's awesome!!!
This also ironically demonstrated instability around the intermediate principle axis
Without Dzhanibekov effect though
Will be a lot of fun to create a space plane with mission control, and make it do automated missions!
6:15: Now we know where the swirl over Norway came from.
6:10 - you've built a space disco ball! Yay!
Or a pulsar. Both of them work XD
This is fun!
Love it Scott! Do you livestream often? I have the weekend off and I'm going to be doing a KSP marathon by both playing and watching KSP content. I'd love to watch you live and hope I can catch it! Fly safe!
"We'll call it Otto." I found that way too funny.
What Scott thought: "You can't trust computers"
What the computer thought: "You can't trust these stupid humans"
:-D
This is so silly and I love it XD
Epic!
Pausing seconds into this to comment that this is exactly the kind of thing I would be doing in KSP if I had a big enough screen not to be annoyed.
Finally picked up the game for pc the other day. So much better than an Xbox controller lol.
I wish ksp had steam achievments. It would add a little more fun trying to get all of them like getting to all the planets or finding all anomalies
@6:20 I wonder what that would look like for the kerbals on the ground. "Its going up.. its going up.. its looking good.. its looking good... Welp. That... that's not expected. Jebediah.. no he's dead. DANG who's next in line... Guess what your the new jebediah"
Yes yes, very much want to see and auto moon lander!
The KSP developers need to learn about quaternions. No gimbal issues with quaternions!
Pretty much the only notable thing I've ever done in KSP is make a single stage rocket that would hit the Mun without any user input. Granted, the input was just done before hand via trial/error of the launch angle.
Well done! You could try an Apollo-style mun landing without controls... 😉
Funny! Thanks!
The worlds third water tower in space, don't forget about Project Highwater
Would love to see an automated touch and return from the moon.
You can clearly see that Scott is increasing his FOV at around the 2:50 mark to make Kerbin look curved. #flatkerbin
how many times can u fly around kerbin, within the atmosphere, without refueling? also not using solar panels and electric engines.
that takes ages
If you're in orbit in the higher part of the atmosphere (65~70 km), you can stay there quite a while. If you're in a plane, it depends of your design, but I'm guessing around 1 round trip max. (and that would take very long to complete)
There was a challenge years ago on the forums to do this, I know some guy got 4. I got 2.
Yeah, go to the mun Scott. Do it
6:17 the rocket is now a pulsar
2:58 Here after watching a water tower lift 20 metres off the ground, looks like Scott beat Elon to it.
cant wait for this but landing on the mun (or jool 5 no controls)
Just so you know we were joking when we said you would do it without pressing any buttons next time.
6:20 - World's largest and highest distress flare! :D
This is the best movie in the world?!
Interesting... Very interesting...
We will call it OTTO
6:25 I think the state of the vessel can be described as Quantum :)
And people complained about mechjeb? :p
And gravity turn ;)
KSP is based on Unity, which uses quaternions for rotation.
euler's method is one of the simplest and fastest ways to simulate dynamical systems like game physics; it's somewhat unrelated to euler angles. so many stuff in mathematics has euler's name on it
Scott Manley can send a rocket into orbit without doing it.
I would to see some attempt at those automated logic mods, where you literally program things.
6:10 Booster Rave!
For a challenge, can you do the Tintin lunar mission profile, burning continuously from launch to landing save for one drunken spacewalk and one reorientation? Obviously you'd need an infinite fuel mod.
You can probably circularize on the Sepatrons alone.
This entire thing made me wonder. So if you can have the mission builder activate stages and such. What happens if you tell it to activate a stage that has already been activated or one that is not the next in line?
could you elaborate on how using euler's method (I presume for ODEs?) effects why it slows down to spin, I'm very curious!! :)
At 6:12, looks like a wacka-doodle quasar.
BGM: No Time For Caution
I think I have a way you could mcguyver a thrust canceller: you could use sepertrons aimed in retrograde. It might work
does version 1.4 make wheel physics wonky for anyone else? For me whenever i try and land a rover it starts to bounce randomly until the wheels break.
Can we program this to land our reusable boosters while still flying our main rocket to target? right now i only do this with FMRS
Scott, what do you think about the take 2 situation?
I haven't played KSP for a long time. I guess I really should update. The only problem is downloading all the updates for mods that I have. I know there's mod managers, but the last time I looked into it, not all the mods that I use were supported.
Does Ferram Aerospace simulate the Magnus effect? I'd like to see a plane with giant spinning drums instead of wings!
This video makes me want to vomit. Good job Scott
Please dont fast forward your building phases, its my favorite phase of your videos when u you commenting it and building. People can fast forward themselves if they want :O
You can watch the unedited version I linked in the description.
Scott Manley thanks and sorry for not reading description! :)
►Whoua !!! What a brilliant DLC... lol
6:11 PULSAR!!
Highest point at 4m20s? Intentional?
So what are your thoughts on Take 2's changes to the TOS/EULA?
So who else after watching is tending towards waiting a bit on the purchase instead getting it now?
Its the oposite for me
As someone who has it, I definitely would not recommend buying it.
HarbingerDawn nah, I am buying it for the mission editor. I want to recreate “the martian” in ksp with that
Agreed. I was quite disappointed after purchasing the expansion and finding out that even the stock missions are unpolished and bugged.
Scott, im just getting into ksp, and i would like to know how to setup intersects with orbiting objects like space stations.
Maneuver node
This is borderline AFK orbiter. Automatic launch to the Mun is astonishing, but can you do it on stock, with properly timed SRB burn-outs?
gg
Does anyone know how to install the dlc? When I select the 1.4 folder (the compatible one) it says please install version 1.4 or higher and that my ksp is old, although it is compatible and has the extra space in the menu for it.
Please help I bought the dlc for $15 😅
KSP FAQ should help you.
Oh yeah. I'm sure I could.... destroy dozens of spacecraft trying to do this. . . . . . unsuccessfully too!
So with this being near automatic controlled. Is it possible we could be seeing scripts introduced for boosters to Reland like SpaceX without manually landing them?
Didn't you already do this a few months ago other than the space bar?
Just Thomas but now there's no spacebar
yeah but now it's without even the space bar
This is actually quite a bit harder, because he can't adjust the timing of the stages in situ to manipulate where the rocket goes.
Stephen Charbonneau I'm glad you can read
The Manly Astronaut Maybe Stephen replied without bothering to read the replies that were already there.
That being said, I wanted to see Scott programming rudder inputs at given altitude and velocity and stuff like that.
Make a self landing rocket with this
so it's like built in KOS? without the text programming
Who just bought the expansion today like me?
Ksp team deserves it!
I have a problem in my Career its at the beginning and I launched a rocket into an stable orbit my next mission is to bring this back but its not working. When I land nothing get's damage but its not completed pls help me.
I just killed Jeb. bill and bob again, Crashed on the moon with a prototype lander
I’m gonna get ksp on Friday but I’m not gonna get the dlc with it. What is the free update going to have
New languages, some new parts, an updated game engine with better performance, and personal parachutes for the Kerbal.
4:20. Of course.
lmao when you realize that the rocket is its *highest* at 4:20
Now to Eeloo.
here i am struggling to get anything into a stable orbit, and scott manley can do it without even putting in input...
Yes i dooooo!!
CUUUZZ IIIII CAAAAAAAANNNNN!!!!!
🌚🌑🌚🌑🌚🌑🌚🌑🌚🌑🌚🌑
BUMbumBUMbumBUMbumBUUMMM
yeet
Just bought a tee shirt today! Check yo stagin!!! Gotta love the vids.
