    When you're adding multiple parts to a pair (or more) of substructures (Like those fins on your boosters), you can build one substructure while using normal symmetry modes to place those symmetrical parts, then remove the entire substructure and re-add it with symmetry enabled.

    Nice tutorial!
    Some real-life trivia that doesn't affect the game. Several different methods are used to vector the thrust of an engine, including moving the entire engine, moving the exhaust bell, and injecting gas into the engine plume to reduce the thrust on one side. KSP calls all these "gimballing", which technically only refers to moving the entire engine.
    In real life, there are rocket engines which cannot be restarted, or which can only be started on the ground. The American Atlas and the early versions of the Russian R-7 did not carry engines which could be started in flight. In fact, the Russians sent the first probes to the Moon by launching directly into a lunar trajectory, instead of going to a parking orbit around Earth and then performing a separate Trans Lunar Injection burn.

    • @MikeAben
      @MikeAben  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks. All great info. I'm running into the single ignitions right away playing around in RP-1. Also, I've yet to have engines that throttle, and when they do come, the range of the throttle is very limited.

    • @JohnWilliamNowak
      @JohnWilliamNowak 2 роки тому

      @@MikeAben Great stuff!
      One of the first engines that could throttle was the descent engine on the lunar module. This worked by releasing helium into the combustion chamber to lower thrust ... so the engine would use the same amount of fuel throughout the throttle settings, but it didn't run as efficiently.
      Early gasoline engines used on fighter aircraft didn't have throttles, so instead they had a "blip" button that would turn the engine off for a moment. Since the engine was hot it would restart reliably. I don't know if there is a rocket engine that "blips."

    This was a big help for future rockets, I had been ignoring the stability indicator and only instead using wings to bring the center of gravity down.
    I did my first orbit a day before I saw this, and I made alot of mistakes learning along the way. It was an ugly elliptical orbit ranging from 100k-200k.
    The games tutorials are okay, they walk you through the processes, but they don't tell you WHY you're doing these things.

    Tbh in campaign I prefer to scrimp on actively seeking science until I get more unlocks and then just making dockable/extendable science satellites and vessels and rovers. I admit it would be a slog if I hadn't been playing nearly a decade, and its the same at the end of the day, but I like those big science hauls and its great fun coming back from a new biome with all the data at once instead of repeat trips with drips and drabs; or you can dump the vehicle with solar panels and the habitable research lab and a transmitter :)

    My prograde vector drops like mad when i start applying thrust lined up with the horizon, causing my altitude to drop. Yours seems to stay incredibly stable. Anyone have any tips?

      It sounds like your ascent profile was much steeper than mine. If your apoapsis is dropping more than you would like, or your time to apoapsis is getting too small, you can compensate by pitch up above the horizon. That is, a little into the blue.

    My rocket fell and crashed every time I tried to launch. I know the game has had updates. No hate on this person, cuz he gave me tips.
