- Here are my 5 tips for autism haircuts. Nonverbal autism presents many problems when trying to successfully navigate routine tasks for us. Haircuts are a major sensory overload and tough for a child with sensory processing disorder. Whether your child is verbal or nonverbal these tips may help though. The end result...Abbie looks darling with her short haircut.

FatheringAutism my partner has aspergers syndrome a form of autism. I also have down syndrome in both sides my family. so our chances could be higher. I'm 20 weeks pregnant and watch these videos to help understanding my partner and if we have a special needs child. x

Hey dad I would love to ask you if you can make a video of how she handles brushing her hair ? Or a brushing hair tutorial video. My son is like your daughter exactly and he has long hair and it’s getting so difficult to keep it brushed because he hates brushing it
Here's what worked for us:
1: Consistency: we went to the same salon and the same stylist for over 10 years. Our son developed a trust with her. BTW, when we started he was tiny but now he dwarfs the stylist who is barely 5' tall! It's not a problem because he trusts her - even with the "buzzer."
2: Scheduling: we always went close to closing time when there were no other clients around and most of the TVs/video game consoles/devices are off. Crying or noisy children are a BIG trigger.
3: Communication: even though he's nonverbal he has ears so all the adults would engage him verbally. We used to use PECS to tell him where we were going beforehand, along with what we would be doing afterward.
4: bring help. Our son requires 2:1 supervision at all times. We used to bring a TSS with us but when we discontinued that service the choice of scheduled times and our ABA "training" allowed my wife and I to back each other up. With one parent working a lot of OT that is often a challenge, especially with a younger sibling in the mix.
5: Remain calm. It's very easy to be a "helicopter parent" with a child with many symptoms associated with ASD. Despite this, we realized that our son could pick up on our tension and feed off it.
6: Prioritize: much as you use the golf cart as a reward we also used PECS and later were able to verbally express that he would be earning ice cream.
She is beautiful! I bet the school loved it. I think the hair cut matches her personality, sassy! So cute
First Abby's hair looks awesome and she seems to like it
Second. I cried to be honest. (Usually do when long hair is cut)
Persilla. Wow u are so strong!!! Hats off to u
Priscilla Maass u need to give yourself WAY WAY WAY more credit! U always have a smile for the camera. You take Asa in stride No ones strong all the time ❤️
she is amazing
Her hair looks amazing!!! Short hair is so much fun to stim with. Plus it's easier to wash and it dries much faster!
With my special need daughter I trim her hair at home in her room during a quiet time of the day . I've actually gotten pretty good at it after five year lol . But much less stressful for her and it's just a small trim but works out great !
A doll worked really well for my daughter. My daughter (also with ASD) is a auditory, visual, and Kinetic learner. The doll was not there just as a comfort toy, but also as a teaching tool. The hairdresser would tell her what she is going to do and show her on the doll simultaneously...and then it would be my daughter's turn to pretend to cut the dolls hair and then we would tell her it's her turn. Telling my daughter that she looks beautiful and how great she's doing and letting her see her reflection is reinforcing for her. A similar technique with the doll also works with the dentist and doctor. I love all of your tips, good sir! It's really neat to learn about other things that work for other families. What are your tips for going to the dentist or the doctor?
Abigail looks beautiful with her new look! You guys are doing a wonderful job raising Abigail and sharing with us. Thank you!
I had to learn the basics to do my son's haircut. We do it in the bathroom because it's easy to clean up after we finish. He doesn't like the mess. I shower him and we're done. Instead of paying a hairdresser I pay my son for the good behavior.
Valerie You're lucky, I can't wait until mine is old enough to know what a cash bribe.. I mean 'reward' is! 😅 hah!
All these tips were great. I can't believe how much an anxiety disorder can overlap with autism.
As a hairdresser I've had a few experiences cutting hair for children with special needs. Is there anything as a stylist that I can do to help make the experience better? 😊 I love your vlogs!
Niki Porter my brother had really bad sensory issues when he we little & he HATED hair cuts. He would calm down if he could sit on our moms lap backwards so they were face to face. It also helped him if the stylist found out what he liked (songs stories etc) & she would always sing & tell those stories to him while cutting his hair. I think it's all about finding out what makes the child comfortable!
In addition to what Lexi Stanifor said, find out what makes the child uncomfortable. For us, it was the cut hair falling on him cape or no cape. He hates it and makes getting his haircut so difficult if the barber doesn't constantly keep it brushed off. So now, I volunteer to help the barber and keep brushing the hair off, making a game out of it, and he does 100% better. One month ago, he didn't mind the cape, this month he HATES it, so I asked the barber to please not use it. Just ask the parents what, if anything, upsets their child, also find out what helps. BTW, thank you so much for caring enough to ask! xox
Those are all awesome comments. I'll be sure to incorporate them with future clients! ☺️
I think these tips are useful for many things. Going to the doctor for example.Having PTSD and being on the spectrum, too, I really appreciate when doctors tell what they’re doing next, showing the instruments and telling if it’s gonna be cold. And I HATE it when people talk over my head. And yes, if I have a difficult appointment I’d give myself a reward, earlier on it was my caregiver who said that we eat an ice cream after all, for example. All of this makes things easier and you’ll get a kind of routine then. But I must admit that it’s “sad” that Abbie can’t wear long hair.
Abbie's long hair was so beautiful and it was so pretty on her. She is such a beautiful child.
Her hair looks great and I bet it'll be way more comfortable in the heat! I imagine the new sensations (cool breezes, the way the hair moves etc) could be very stimulating/soothing too.
I love the fact that you call yourselves an autism family instead of saying Abby is autistic. Giving the meaning of how a family changes so much for this child with special needs. Only angels get to have the chance to raise a child with her type of needs, the innocence and pureness and the unconditional love given and received to and for a child with special needs is one of a kind. God bless your family ❤️. Thank you for letting us in you lives to give us a bit of you to share.
She looks so happy! Her hair looks awesome, and I'm sure it will be easier for you all to manage.
Cool to see it come full circle.
Abagail looks so pretty with the new haircut
Hey, I'm an old viewer and also a teacher and I am using your videos to share with some parents who have some of the same concerns! As always thanks for being an awesome family and sharing things that you have learned worked for you over time! Can't wait until y'all can come to Surfers for Autism so I can maybe meet yall!
I don't know many people with autism but I find these videos really interesting! Also Abby is so sweet ! Thank you for making these videos!
I love her hair cut😍. all power to you Priscilla 💪💪I absolutely can't imagine cutting my girls hair even though she could seriously use one.i am mentally trying to prepare myself for when I absolutely have to cut her hair I know I'll cry like a baby. you guys are awesome for knowing what needs to be done and doing it even though it's rough. I salute you guys.
I AM 34 AND STILL CRY WHEN I GET MY HAIR CUT. IT MAKES IT LESS TRAUMATIC WHEN I DONATE IT. PLEASE CONSIDER DOING THAT WITH YOUR CHILDS HAIR. GO TO WIGSFORKIDS.COM FOR DETAILS HOW TO DONATE. THIS WAY YOUR CHILDS HAIR DOES NOT GO IN THE GARBAGE, IT GOES TOWARDS MAKING SOMEBODY ELSE HAVE HAIR AS CUTE AS YOUR KIDS HAIR
Aww Abbie really suits her new haircut :D she sat wonderfully Ally was the same until a few years ago now he sits wonderfully we have a hairdresser who comes in regularly to our home and Ally gets his hair cut that way Ally was sporting the rugged longer hair style until then and we talked about it over time then one day he said 'mummy, I think hair cut please' I said are you sure you are ready to which he replied 'yes please mum' and that was that so far touch wood we have had no run in's or problems since then :D the only thing he took a bit of getting use to was the spray water used to keep his hair damp while cutting so now when the hairdresser is coming in he has his shower just before she comes out then it stays damp enough after towel drying for the duration of his haircut she is amazing with him now he even looks in mirror afterwards and has even surprised me a few times by expressing things like he wanted it a bit shorter and also explaining to her that he wanted it a certain way at the front so yeh it has gone from being a real nightmare to me mentioning to him if I think he may need one to him then expressing a day he would like his hair cut for eg if I say on a Friday what day would you like your hair cut Monday Tuesday or Friday he will pick a day he prefers and I will call and book an appointment for her to come to the house. works amazingly well now. Due to Ally's hyperacusis salons or barbers are a no go because of his hyperacusis but this way totally works for him so YAY :D
love the new cut and abbey seems like she is feeling good about it! Great tips. I used to cut the hair of the little girl I took care of. she did a lot of head rolling at one point and I would cut her hair when she was asleep!
Thanks for your tips, me and my husband have a hard time cutting are son's hair. We're always trying to keep him calm for the haircut making sure that we can get his haircut and also that we don't accidentally hurt him when trying to cut his hair. I been watching your video's a lot. They been helping with so much for what I can do for my son. You have such a great family and you all help with others family. Thanks so very much for your great videos and keep up the amazing work.
Hair cut looks amazing, well done Miss Abbie, good job xxx
Also, her hair is beautiful!! I'm glad she loves it!
Abby looks great! Amazing tips! I havent gotten a hair cut in years
Abby certainly rocks her haircut. She looks amazing!
Thank you so much! I have had so much bad advice over the last few years. Some of it was advice that was not taken because it was torture for my son. These tips are manageable and realistic.
I'm a verbal autism kid and when I was younger I used to HATE getting my haircut too I only just got it cut again recently after hating getting it cut and not doing it for 6 years I went and cut mine short (mid back to the shoulders) and I love getting it cut now
so glad you made this video! My son is going next week for a haircut! I'm really nervous about it
Something else that I think might really help parents with a diagnosis at a young age, like with our daughter, start getting haircuts as early in life as possible so they are used to the idea of getting their haircut.
Also, if you live anywhere near a Snip-it's Salon, they only do kids hair and each stylist is highly trained to work with a wide spectrum of kids with disabilities. ☺️
Or, just research salons that specialize in working with kids with disabilities. 💓💓
The haircut is beautiful! Great job Abby! And family. Can we hear more about auditory processing deficit?
Love the haircut! She's such beautiful girl! We have a place here we're the stylist have received training from a group of therapists. They have tv's and fidgety toys. It's pretty awesome. My youngest still has a really hard time though I'm definitely going to try showing him a video of some getting a hair. Thats an awesome tip!
Yay I have been waiting to see her cut!!!
I didn't really know anything about autism before I found your channel, loving binge watching and educating myself! I thought I'd comment on this video because a hair dressers near me has started taking 1 day out of the month to close the shop to the public and have in only kids who find hair cuts traumatic, aiming specifically at kids on the spectrum, so that there's less going on to irritate them I guess. I find that even more great now that I kinda know how difficult it can be for them. Go them woo :D
XI work in a group home with 6 lovely ladies. All with different needs and abilities. I am in charge of taking my wonderful girl with autism to get her haircut. She does constant head movements so my 1 chose is a snack and a stylist who is used to my girls. Makes the haircuts so wonderful.
Anytime soon! Abby will just give in and as time gets on and the older she gets you won't have those issues, hopefully she gives in and gets a haircut
Oh my gosh she is so cute with her haircut I love it so much !
Abbie looks gorgeous!!! Thank you so much for this, I still cut Jocelyn's hair myself. Would you make a video someday about auditory processing and ways to help with it? 💗Christina
Wow!! So she had long hair for about 9 years I assume, that is incredible! 😀💓
The end result is awesome her hair looks so good, so grown up 😊
She bet my record the longest I've ever had long hair for, was six years ☺
I'm on the spectrum, and when I was little I used to learn by visual charts, one hung up in my room. It was the most effective way for me, as I didn't know how to read for a start.
So my daily routine and chores were in pictures, at the end of my chart, it had a picture of dolls, to show once I'd done all of those things, it meant I was then allowed free play 😊❤💙💜💛💚
Ya! I love her hair. I never would have pictured her with long hair if I hadn't seen this video. Well done! Good choice!👍🙋👵✌
I'm a special education teacher and I've had parents in the past tell me that their most successful haircuts are when the child is sleeping. They'll have a friend stylist come over and help cut their hair while the kiddo is in a deep sleep. An idea of anyone out there is really struggling. This was a first grader, similar to Abbi, but more aggressive & severe behaviors. Also scheduling it so it's only once or twice a year. Cut really really short so you can buy yourself more time between haircuts.
Omg....I can so relate...Thank you for the tips💖
Absolutely adorable, it's so cute. I'm a sucker for short hair on girls and I love Abby's haircut. It's looks great!! 👌🏻👍🏻
Really great tips:) my kiddos only 4 but we are having trouble cutting his hair ourselves. Great tips to start implementing slowly while he's still small:)
She is so gorgeous and she did so well!!😍
Love the cut!!!!!
that turned out super cute!
i love abbys hair so very cute on her
Ahh, she looks so pretty!
This is also helpful for parents of young children children 2-4 hate to sit still.
Being a Cosmetologist myself, I want to commend your stylist for a job well done. The cut is nice. You guys are great for putting out this info to help others. I think they should show this in every salon during orientation. I don't know about all States, but in mine, they do not teach people how to cut the hair of people with special needs. We kind of figure it out as we go. I have been doing hair for over 16 years, and I learned a thing or two in my time. I'm leaving the hairdressing world due to back and wrist issues; Two things that are quite important for Cosmetologists. At any rate, I was curious if you guys had thought about bangs? I know bangs tend to grow out fast, and maybe her hairdresser advised against it for that reason, or maybe you guys thought her forehead was too short? My daughter's forehead is too short for bangs, and she has a cow-lick on the side as well. But if you do decide to later on, it would keep most of that front hair out of her eyes. I see you guys sometimes put her hair back, and if that works for you then great, but if you get sick of it, try bangs. It isn't as hard to grow out as everyone says.
+Jamiesa Hillman Thabk you for the comments. I agree that hairdressers should be taught. Abbie has had bangs all her life. We just grew her hair out and I'm loving it without the bangs for now. -Priscilla
I know this is old but Abbie and Mama have the most beautiful hair !!!! ❤️❤️❤️
Abbie looks great!
Thank you for these tips my son really struggles with hair cuts
so interesting.thanks.
Abbey is beautiful, thanks for the tips.
This was awesome . What about tips for hair washing ? Cos i really struggle or rather my dad struggles to do it .
My level 3 son is 4 and doesn't like strangers touching him so i have to cut his hair at home still. He loves showers, more than the average person, like really gets excited every time i say shower time. So a shower is his reward after a hair cut. He now accepts me cutting his hair but nobody else.
Thanks for the tips
Thank you so much for this. My son is non-verbal ASD, 4, And we're doing his second hair cut *fingers crossed*
Looking back dang you guys have lost some weight. Lookin nice here but dang the new you two are lookin right on in the new stuff. Keep it up.
Beautiful!
She looks just as beautiful with short hair, it suits her face really well
I loved that long hair but it makes sense.....alot of people chew on their hair, even people who do not have autism
Great video! Our son turns into a different child when I take him to get his hair cut. It is awful and one of the most stressful things we do. He freaks out😞 I can only hope it'll get better with age...
Looks like she likes the way her hair shakes now! We're lucky that our daughter likes the sensory input of getting her hair cut. Our son is the opposite, though. The sensory input is too much for him. It's slightly better now, but when he was little he acted like we were cutting his head off!
I love her hair it's so cute on her:)
Thank you for this...I am a hairstylist and its very helpful to have these tips to help create a happy and comfortable experience for a client like Abby : )
That's awesome! Glad you found it helpful. Thanks for watching!
One more tip for since you're a hairstylist. Be patient with autism parents. There's a good chance they went through a special kind of hell just getting their kid to the salon. We are all a little crazy. :)
Thank you so much!!!!!!
Thank you for the tips. I have a grandson that is non verbal Autistic. And it is a struggle to get his haircut. He has a meltdown every time. But he likes to cut his grandpa's hair with clippers. But when it's his turn running around and hiding from them.
LOVEEE THE HAIR CUTE SO COOL :)
She looks beautiful and those tips are fantastic, because I have boys when they allow me to I cut their hair for them but this is rare lol
I think Abby would look great in a ponytail! Try it out! It would not get in her face or anything!!
My child would just pull it out
did you donate her hair? it came out great. I am proud of her for doing so good while getting it done!
+jimcarreyonline I'm proud of her too. Yes, we will be donating her hair.
I've been trying to find someone to give my hair to but there seems to be no call for it in Sweden so I I haven't cut my hair yet. It's very long now. I know this isn't what you vlog for but can you tell me who you will donate abbie's hair to so that maybe I can contact them as well? Since it's america it might cost me something but if it's going to someone who needs a good natural hair wig then it'll be worth it.
Abigail you are so pretty! You're smile makes me smile :)
Great job Abbie! I do have a question: Do you get nervous about the extra sharp hair-cutting scissors being so close to her head & face, while she moves around constantly? Although, it seems like her stylist is quick! Thanks, cheers!
Yeah, I get a little nervous.
It's great that you're so honest in your comments
Abby looks amazing! Such a beautiful girl! My son still struggles with hair cuts :( I'm going to try and use your tips see if it see if it will help my little man! Fingers crossed (>_
I got my hair cut by a hairdresser in my home instead of a sallon for the first time yesterday. I actually talked to my hairdresser because there was less noise and it wasn't hot so i didn't feel stuffy.
Gorgeous.
Aww she loooks so cute😍😍😍
Did you donate her ponytail to Locks of Love or Wigs for Kids?
Thank you
I cut mine and my kids hair, but I took some cosmetology classes. I let my kids stand. Victor is my hardest one. That's why his hair is so long. Great tips, though. I always bated getting my hair cut, but I hate having long hair.
good tips
We have regressed to the very beginning again. My son had to go to the er last year for stitches due to falling while jumping on his bed. (4 stitches= scissors) So now he runs from videos showing haircuts. His bangs are in his eyes and he hates it but he is so terrified of hair tools that nothing helps. I have been patiently trying all these tips for what feels like forever and his autism center even has a haircut simulation they've been working with him for 8 months, no progress. I can't even get one snip in before a break is needed. I've even tried while he is sleeping, I'll get two snips in and he's awake and won't let me do more. My husband refuses to help. I'm at a loss, but won't give up.
Abbie is so beautiful ! And Isaiah is very handsome
Abigail BEAUTIFUL HAIR love it you look so pretty just like mommy :-) Beautiful thick hair I am jealous. Great job LOVE it guys! xo
Yeah!!!! I see 10K on # subscribed....You go guys!!! ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥
Did you donate Abigail's ponytail?
The biggest mistake I had at my son's most recent haircut was not making an appointment.
We had to sit 10 minutes with blow dryers & buzzers going on in the background.
He kept saying, "too loud."
As a hairstylist to all patents. Don't learn your kid that sissors are dangerous. Makes it a lot easier for the stylist to gane trust. (Btw sorry if my spelling isn't correct, I am Dutch and dyslectic)
My 4 year non verbal autistic old son used to hate it... Now I use a rechargable clipper and roam around with him and just allow him to do what he loves like playing with water... Then I just kinda move the clipper on his head without trimming just getting him used to the vibrations... remember they prefer it on the top not near the ears or back or forehead... Then started just clipping the small ends even though my sons hair was long .. this I did by just lightly moving and not pressing it on his head... Remember to always not let hair remain on the neck and blow it out ASAP....you cannot press and get it done with and require to take many breaks till your done...if possible let them lie back down on a table so that hair does not fall on the neck...
Great Love the Love
Abby is so pretty
i think its good to cut abbies hair and she looks so beautiful i remember when i had a habit of chewing my hair and i started getting pains in stomach went docs this is what he told me Since hair is indigestible in the human digestive system, it will simply come out whole if you eat small amounts, however, the digestion of large amounts of hair can lead to to the hair gathering in the gastrointestinal tract causing indigestion and stomach pain.
Severe cases can even lead to hairballs such as the ones in cats, however you can also risk the hairballs being stuck in the intestine, which might require surgery to remove.
She is so stinkin' cute!
Noise cancelling headphones work for my brother because he doesn't like the noise of anything like that so we use noise cancelling headphones
What is a sensory overload? And stims?
❤
