  • Her orientation day at school didn't go well and she had a bit of a meltdown.
The first day of school for an autistic girl and her neurotypical brother went well. We are doing great on our weight loss challenge. We were asked for some pointers for a first time IEP. Here's my answer and best suggestions or IEP tips.

Fabulous job...17#!!!?! You guys actually helped motivate me to change my family's diet also! This THURSDAY I am walking into our third meeting w the school board to create our first IEP. I'm scared, considered hiring an advocate but didn't want to come across as threatening just yet 😬. I'm a rookie, wish us luck. Thank you!

I'm 19, and a lot of kids my age want to drink, smoke, and party. But for me, I don't like any of that stuff. I just really want a family of my own one day, and I hope mine is as close and as happy of a family as y'all are! Y'all are family goals!♡
I'm not Autistic, and no one in my immediate family is(my two year old niece might be.. but she hasn't been able to get tested just yet), but I love learning more about Autism! When my sister-in-law first told me that she suspected my niece may be on the spectrum, that's when I started researching and found your channel! I've learned a lot about Autism and more! Thank you!

Great advice,I needed to hear this. My son is high functioning and we are facing our first iep with his diagnosis. He has started school with out an iep at the request of the school and it has been a fight. We are now in the assessment stage and I can already see this is going to be a very long year, they are hardly willing to provide the bare minimum. They would rather send him back a grade than accommodate his needs.

Priscilla, don't get discourage. It's quite common for men to lose it faster than women. And I found the scale numbers to be very discouraging. If you take measurements of your body it might help. The scale number may not be moving, but the diameter of your legs might be shrinking. You got this girl!

WOW! You are such a wonderful role model. I prepped my 5 y.o nephew for his first day of school earlier this month and it was bittersweet. He has made amazing progress ❤️ and continues to do so, but there is always that worry back of my mind that someone might treat him differently than the rest of his peers because he is so overly- friendly and loving towards everyone! He is just like any other precious 5 year old, and means the world to my family and I! I know he will continue to grow, I guess that’s just me being overprotective. Can anyone else relate?

I don't remember the name exactly , but I think it was pretty straight forward. Leading causes of death in America by Dr. Michal Greger? Something like that. They discuss how harmful poultry is in that video as well as the documentary, "What the Health". :)

My daughter is high functioning, and watching you and Abigail really helps me to cope with parenting a child who needs a bit of extra attention. She recently started talking up a storm (she's almost 4!) we're still working on toilet skills (she gets the concept but at least once a day she will decide not to use the toilet, also most of the time she needs to be prompted to use the toilet) it's amazing to see how intelligent your daughter is, and that allows me to see the little things with my daughter. She recently started drawing faces, and learning her colors. It's absolutely amazing. Melt downs and bed time are a struggle but nothing our family can't handle. Her little brother is not even 2 yet and he already knows how to calm her when she gets over stimulated or frustrated. It's like he can READ her, understanding her needs when her dad and I are stumped. I love that your son is also so involved in Abigail's day to day living.. And we can only hope that our son grows to continue to be supportive and understanding with his sister. Y'all are an amazing inspiration and I'm so glad to have found your channel.

    • @fatheringautism
      @fatheringautism  7 років тому +13

OCS is different than an IEP. OCS is designed as an alternative requirement to complete schooling towards graduation. An IEP is custom designed for each student based on their level and needs. The team and parents set goals for the year in the IEP and there is specifics on how those goals will be met. It's an intensive multi-page plan sheet that keeps everyone accountable if closely followed.

same! so i wanted to get an iep for my anxiety because my 504 was absolute bs, so they had to test me, in the past 4 years i took the test every year and out tested it. the point of the iep wasnt to be helped with trouble understanding, but it was for when i had a panic attack about given too much work in 1 night, getting overwhelmed in a classroom environment, etc. i finally stood up to them describing what i needed, and all i got was put in an academic support class. remind you i have a solid grade average, so YES i totally feel you ( also i normally am okay in class and have friends its just when the panic attacks would happen, no one helped )

I had my IEP FROM 6th grade through my senior year of high school. From 6th to 8th grade they taught me what I couldn't really understand in my regular clases. From 9-12th grade it was just support in classes like with homework, curriculum, talking to the teachers for me and with my tests.

I have been very pleased with the outcomes of each of our meetings so far. Granted, we are only 2 years in. What do you think about homeschooling?

I think it's good for some, not for all. I don't really have an opinion on it one way or another tbh.

Maybe Abbie has gotten into a routine of having cereal, and just expects it. But other meals she knows will just be whatever is given to her. And it's good that she snacks throughout the day so she doesn't get hungry and in a bad mood.

@FatheringAutism I know I’m watching this a couple years late, so I’m crossing my fingers that you actually see this. I love love LOVE that you’re educating people about IEPs and parental rights in education. I am a special education teacher for students with moderate to extensive disabilities and support needs in the public school setting, and I found myself nodding along to your explanation of the IEP process and the parental role in meetings and the development of the IEP.
While the teachers, administrators, service providers, therapists, etc. may be experts in our respective fields, the parents are the experts in the individual child. I love when parents ask questions, and it is so important for the IEP team to work as a team with the parents an equal player on the team. And you are absolutely correct about FAPE and “appropriate” versus “best.” It’s not fair that the system is built to only provide what is deemed to be “appropriate,” and as a teacher, I try my darndest to do what is best for each of my students given the resources provided to me...this often means I’m purchasing things for the classroom out of pocket or working 10-hour days, but that’s not important. What’s important is that EVERY child receives equitable educational opportunities. I think the system is improving, and I just hope that it continues to get better for all students and especially those with disabilities.
Thanks for all that you do to raise awareness for autism and other disabilities. I found your channel a few months ago and have been binge-watching all your videos from start to finish. We’ll see how long it takes!! :)

Good IEP advice! I used to work in the schools. Going into an IEP with the idea of working as a team is 100% spot on!! Best way to handle it IMO!!

I figured out with my son that if he has his bookbag then he understood he was going to school. If I used that bookbag for say a slumber party he would melt down when we got to the family members cause he thought we were going to school. Next year try going to open house with her book bag. Even if there isn't anything in it. She may understand that she's going to go to school.

The look of disappointment on your sons face when you handed him his 'present' ...after Mom got a video game... and he got black ink absolutely broke my heart. He was so sad and it showed on his face.
