Big Meltdown In The Big Apple | TSA Cares Doesn't Work

  • The big meltdown in the Big Apple! I've thought about this several times debating whether Abigail was having autistic meltdowns or not. Meltdowns are a loss of control. I don't think Abigail was in control of her yelling and stimming...hence, a meltdown. TSA tried and I give them credit for that but TSA Cares doesn't work like it is.

Because of the trend in the comments...
Abbie isn’t affected by loud environments. The restaurant wasn’t actually as loud as it seemed in the video anyway. She was yelling before we got to the restaurant so it wasn’t what set her off. She won’t wear headphones, earplugs, or anything else on her head.

I don't have autism. But I do have sensory issues and feel sometimes like I'm melting down. It feels uncontrollable. I wish I could adequately describe the feeling - overwhelmed, overstimulated, super anxious, skin crawling, skin super, super sensitive, everything crashing in on me and then a feeling like rage. Certain sounds can do it, and patterns, but mostly it's just when I'm tired and super overstimulated and almost always when I need to eat or haven't eaten enough. I really wish I could explain what a totally horrible feeling it is. It feels like torture.
At those times I have to be left alone until I can calm down and get something more in me. A place like that with all the sounds, movement, sights, smells, can make me feel insane under certain circumstances. The things that affects me the worst is low blood sugar. Eating refined sugar destroys me. That typically precipitates the feeling/meltdown. At other times I can handle the same environment. But having sugar ruins me.
I also can;t have things in or on my ears or even head. Drives me batty.
I have no idea what causes a person to have sensory issues or what causes people with autism to have them. But I've watched many of your videos and have noticed that it has happened at restaurants a few times? I wonder if it would make a difference if you gave her a small snack of protein and fruit before you go out to eat. Interestingly, a lot of videos of people acting insane toward fast food workers or whatever have that correlation of hunger. (Or is it hanger?)
The blood sugar/hunger connection with my sensory issues is huge and obvious.
Also, have you ever tried to cut out refined sugar for a while and see if the meltdowns diminish? It can really affect people but it can be hard to make the link. www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/inner-source/201311/is-there-blood-sugar-monster-lurking-within-you
Just a suggestion. I'm sure you get so many and it must be annoying. But from someone who experiences what I think is a similar thing to what Abigail feels, I thought could be worth a shot?

Maybe sensory inputs of the lighting in the restaurant could have been bothering Abby. I love the subway ride when I visit NYC.

TSA doesn't care, that's been my experience anyway. I have an insulin pump for Juvenile Diabetes and can't send it through the xray machine. TSA insisted it would be fine, I insisted I wasn't chancing ruining such an expensive piece of equipment when the manufacturer said not to put it through the machine, so then they treated me like a terrorist.

    Someone with ausitme here!
Aww Abigail looks so sad at the escalator :(
I can't eet when i''m in a (busy) restaurant (it just wont go down because of stress) i totally understand her melddown. if i where in that situation i would like to have my Headphones on (without music just noice canceling) and sitting in a corner (sometimes with my back to te noise)
Doctors told my parents when i was 7 years old that i would never drive a car or life on my own,
And now i'm very good at driving a car and living on my own (with help)
When i see Abigail, i see a girl with intelligence and a lot of potential!!
    See has grown a lot!

I’ve had very different experiences with TSA Cares in different airports, but the one thing in common was that the people at check-in were unaware of the program and every trip, even through the same airport, was different at screening. Thanks for sharing this. My daughter faced a security checkpoint this week where we read the sign instructions to her and then when she got to the metal detectors they gave her instructions which were different than the previous sign. so she stood there not listening to the new instructions and started flailing. by the time she obeyed there were 6 additional guards there and I was getting nervous for her. Different situations are stressful and while I can roll with the changes, I know that my autistic daughter needs preperation for everything that could happen which of course is not always possible. But thank you for sharing about TSA cares, it's good to know about if we fly. And congrats for being able to lead Abbey through a successful trip and staying calm yourself while you do it.

Love the graphics Jeff!!! Abbie and the lines reminded me of my hubby. He is a detainee' on the Spectrum. He can't stand lines. He got yelled at by an officer for speaking when he wasn't supposed to because he was tired of standing in a haircut line. They checked his med records and came back to explain to him calmly that he can't talk out loud like that. He still hates lines but he just calls home to me to vent about them! 😂

I'm only part way through this as I comment, but regarding being in a large noisy restaurant setting I commend you for toughing it out. Personally, I'd be out the door as soon as I saw the chicken feet! I'm pretty sure that's gotta be a choking hazard - and OMG the ceramic plates! My son gets like that sometimes in restaurants so I've often joked that the only restaurant we'd feel safe and accepted would be a Greek restaurant; isn't it customary to smash the plates as an expression of appreciation? At least I wouldn't have to be called to wash dishes! Seriously though, we know from experience that when the food comes we say "check please" so we can take care of business and leave without having to wait for the server to come back.

Now, I know Abby doesn’t need a wheelchair but on the forms the person escorting fills out they check what the disability is and to my knowledge they do have Autism and non verbal on there. I’ve never used TSA cares but so far only heard negative things :( Maybe using the “wheelchair”/disability service would be better for next time. 😊 She did great! Congrats on the win! 🎉

Autism Parents are my heroes. While I will never know exactly what it’s like to walk in your shoes, I have had students have huge meltdowns in very public places and I know how stressful it can be. Here is what I would like to say about it:
Let them look; let them stare. Let me tell them that I don’t care.
This child who is struggling, who’s falling apart
Is the center of my focus
And the beat of my heart!
They think they know what this life is about.
I hear their mummers as loud as a shout.
They think they could “fix it”, that they have the “cure”.
I wonder how they can be so sure!
What’s happening with this child is not her being bad.
This is autism and sometimes it’s sad.
I wish they would wait for this storm to pass
For her mind and her body to be calm at last.
When the storm is over and the sun breaks through-
This is autism, it can be beautiful too.
Until the storm’s over I’ll be her umbrella. I’ll protect her from danger, I’ll protect her from pain. I’ll protect her from stares, I’ll protect her from shame.
So let them look, let them stare. I’ll tell them again that I don’t care.

Abbie was amazing! Sensory overload is so easy to have in NY for someone without sensory processing issues

The bond between your daughter and you is beyond amazing. I can't help but have a smile on my face and in my heart watching you guys interact. She is stunningly beautiful inside and out. If I can be a tenth of the parent you and your wife are, I'll be grateful. 💙💜💙

I had to giggle at Abbie pounding that glass of water after eating that chicken foot. 😂 I’m sure that’s not why she did it, but that’s what I would’ve done if I was brave enough to eat it. And I LOL’d at Priscilla stabbing her food with chop sticks because I do that too! Hahaha! My husband is great with them. I just go to my trusty ol’ fork. 😂 I just wanted to hug Abbie on the subway ride. The subway is horrible! I hate it. I can only imagine how it felt for her. You guys are always so patient and that’s just one of the many reasons I love ya so much.

I'm not Chinese but I have family that was raised there, the safe bet is to ask for dishes that have chicken, pork, beef, and obviously noodles/rice. I was taught how to use chopsticks at a young age, with the more difficult skinny pointed ended ones, while my parents used the thicker rounded or cubed end chopsticks that can be easier to hold. Now there's even children versions that have finger grasps. It's better to just ask for a fork than to look like a fool and stab your food.

I have memories of fear a special needs adult back in the 70s when most were hidden from the rest of the world. The adults did no favors in helping us understand that he was not going to hurt us . Since those experiences I ended up becoming very aware of their need to be loved no matter the understanding. He was the man that was a forever child that lived with mom until she passed and less than a week after he passed away from broken heart syndrome.
My prayers are that society will make it easier by educating what we don't understand.

I haven’t watched this yet but I’m SO DAMN DISAPPOINTED in TSA Cares with your experiences. I’ve only used it twice but it’s been good in our experience. I’m sure it comes down to the place, team, and individual TSA agents but MAN I’m so sad and angry to see the title. I’ll watch when I get home. So freakin’ sorry you guys. 😨
