I Told Him Not To Stare At Her | Autism Mom Comes Home | Fathering Autism Vlog #81

  • Autism mom comes home and we made her cry. Abbie had a meltdown at the flea market so a lot of people stared at her. One guy wouldn't stop so I told him not to stare...with my dad voice. I feel bad about it but I had my fill of rude people and autism meltdowns.

defending your child is one thing but being aggressive is unneeded... i think that’s what hes not proud of. also, sometimes these people staring are a lost cause. snapping at them will do no good. you cant explain autism to every person you encounter and i think thats something that would be hard to get used to as your child gets older. it would be hard to not constantly explain myself or my child and being aggressive towards someone for something they dont understand would make me feel bad as well:-“)

FatheringAutism i believe every autistic child is actually so genius that it makes it hard for them to function. maybe thats a little far fetched but thats how i feel. ive seen many autistic children who are just amazing prodigies. Examples are those who can paint or those who understand animals like no one else can. maybe abigail has a niche for music?

I think it's perfectly normal to loose it in those situations... It's hard enough to keep your cool when you feel anxious about how to deal with a meltdown in such a public place, you become so much more aware of the people around you it just adds to the stress.

My older brother has low functioning Autism, and we always have to ask ourselves if it's autism, or if it's him just being a brat. I understand Isaiah's struggle as well. A lot of the time I have to set aside my wants and/or needs to make him happy, but I've learned that It'll happen another day if we can do it.

I've been working at a gas station for about 5 months now. The town where I work has a large special needs community due to it being close to specialists. Its really nice because the regular customers are so sweet about explaining their hardships and spreading awareness. The gas station has slurpees that we give out free to children who make it through high sensory issues, I guess is the word. Its become another safe haven for the children.

Meltdowns. Ugh. I know. I think people stare at me and Joe because they think maybe I'm hurting him or kidnapping him. And balancing kids. People have no idea what us families deal with and the snap decisions we have to make. Don't be so hard on yourself. All we can do...is the best thing for the moment.

I think when people stare especially during a melt down they are wondering what is going on. I defended a Mom of an autistic teen once in Target where a rude customer starting yelling at the child. I said can't you see he is autistic. The Mom thanked me. My son who is 15 had full melt downs until age 8 age. He has ADHD, sensory issues, autistic tendencies but not enough to be on the spectrum. I find it easiest to explain to people who stare what is going on. Such as my daughter is autistic and she has meltdowns that she cannot help. I guess people could mistake it as a seizure. Since your daughter looks normal it makes people wonder all the more. If they cannot accept her being this way then to bad for him. Abbey is a precious girl. You are doing a great job. My son also has a blanket and still needs his milk in a warm sippy cup at bedtime. Yet he talks about video games and has friends at school but he doesn't want then to come over after school. When I drop him off at the bus stop he acts like a normal teen.

Sweetest family. Abigail is stunningly beautiful with her sweet little features. Momma is always happy & smiling. Love her joyful laugh! Isaiah is sweet, caring and so full of honor. Happy he got his camera & can't wait to check out his insta pics! And dad, you love each of them so deeply & specifically to whatever it seems their heart needs. Makes such a difference! May you all be blessed beyond measure & protected during the hurricane. Sending prayers your way. Angels surround each of you & all of Florida!

I stare sometimes because I'm trying to process what I'm seeing. I don't ever mean it rudely and as soon as I make up my mind, I attempt to stop. I would be horrified if I was yelled at for staring, but I don't ever want to do it so persistently that it warrants a yell. This was deserved though. He stared and stared and he should not have been staring like that. Good job! I mean that, good job. Great job, in fact. You had so much going on, and in the middle of it all, you took the opportunity to tell someone that this happens, and his stares won't stop it.

I love you guys. And you’re so inspiring and I’ve worked with mainly special needs adults. However “adult” is 18 and up. We all know most of us are far from adults at age 18! So dealing and helping ppl with at an age so much is happening in ones life can be challenging. However not impossible like you all have proven. I had an ex that constantly made remarks how he just would lose his mind “ messing with people like that”. Which infuriated me. He’s the type to stare and I wish he had someone like yourself set him straight !
God bless y’all and thank you for sharing

If you are not staring to see how you can help or make sure everything's ok then mind your own business. I hate to think people are thinking "well maybe you shouldn't bring her/him to a place like this" It's like people think people with disabilities should be locked away. It's the community's job to help out it's people out.

Fathering Autism...now that my son talks to me he has enlightened me on things that were going on in his head. His meltdowns could have been from crazy things like picking out a shirt and feeling bad all day for the shirt he left behind. Or the shoes that didnt get worn today! A sad blanket that didnt come shopping with him!
(I let him bring his soft blanket in stores most of the time) He told me his brain feels like everything has feelings and that he worried about his cloths and blankeys.

I would've reacted to someone staring the same way! I have had Several not so nice pieces of advice for flat out rude people! My Mom had Alzheimer's and during a few stages of her disease she would uncontrollably yell and/or have destructive meltdowns. During that time the last thing I needed was whispers, Stares, or laughs! I've lost my cool but it's ok, and I'm ok with it. I would do it again! When you want to protect the integrity of your Child, Parent, or Loved one that's just normal. Other than children, grown Adults should know better than to stare! Several times with My Mom living with the disease she faced so many challenges, and I could cry thinking of the times it wasn't worth saying something to someone who would make a joke.
Best Wishes and I'm getting those Box Tops together! I did have some out of date 😕.. so I'm currently going through them now! Love your Channel! Love your Family!

My nephew's where diagnosed with autism one on the higher spectrum and the lil one on the lower you are amazing parents i learned a lot from you guys . The guy who almost broke his neck looking at abbie is not cool that broke my heart and i know from experience with my nephews that what is normal for us can be painful and triggering to them that sends them into anxiety. Abbie is so lucky to have a big brother and two loving parents and an amazing bestfriend that is her voice and very protective over her.

Best thing to understand an calm yourself down is that nobody is intentionally being a douche! My daughter is in a wheelchair and I used to get so freakin angry at vehicles parked over footpaths and being force into traffic, then I realised, they weren't being dicks, they just didn't know.

I'm 22 and live in the U.K and have autism - SPD , PDA. luckily my friends and family know what to do with meltdowns but my friends are so supportive and aren't happy when people stare at me 😭 my neighbours recently have brought a motorbike which has been setting me off like crazy so I'm going to bed with earplugs and ear defenders on. but my neighbours realised how upset it's been making me and brought us chocolate 😂😂

I totally get you saying something. I've had to say something multiple times to multiple people. Unfortunately, it's always been the the River City Marketplace that I've had to say something. Walmart and Ross. Girls had a staring problem and were literally pointing and laughing at my brother because he looks different (Williams syndrome). I NEVER lose my cool, but over my brother, I do. I even end up getting so angry at the people that I cry while I'm telling at them so I think you did way better than I ever could, Asa.
