My favorite performance of the entire dvd! Absolutely amazing crowd…can you imagine basically the crowd putting their lyrics to an instrumental! RUSH should have gotten a GRAMMY based in this performance alone!
It doesn't matter how many time I watch this particular video, it will always bring a smile to my face, you can't help but enjoy the energy of the moment. Don't care about mixes or anything else, the music and the all out love from the crowd comes through any way you mix it. This is an awesome moment in time and one to cherish. Thanks Justin, thanks for your level headed approach. PS, gotta' say again, loved your April Fools jokes yesterday you and Camilla are a scream.
Another GREAT reaction!!! I know you like the song Scars, check it out LIVE somewhere around 1990, you will really like it then! They rarley played it live and I've been to over 100 concerts...
I've now listened to this version of YYZ live about a dozen more times and i find myself listening closely to the bass I'm a guitar player by nature, but Geddy's bass playing is ferocious in this song, especially during Alex's guitar solo after Neil's drum break. I don't know what it is- his raw/dirty tone, his articulation. It's just freakin' awesome. Now I'm gonna practice bass. lol
I read that it rained and the equipment and recording had issues.....the sound, video production people did an amazing job to salvage what we could have and do hear.
I used to love the crew of air drummers at every Rush concert. They were always bunched up in the front row no matter what state I saw them in (and I saw Rush in four different US states).
When you said, “this is my favorite part”, just kept thinking about your wife’s reaction to Cinderella Man yesterday😂😂😂. Yeah, it’s so cool watching the crowd jump up and down in unison. And there’s women in the audience too!!
Epic. I agree about the mix, Neil's drums are too low in the background, especially the snare. If only they got the Different Stages mix for this show.
😂ignore the what, it was for being first to comment, but I wasn’t😢anyhoo🤧let’s talk guitars🎸started with two different PRS customs, then the Tele, then the SG, then the Les Paul-and now, I think another Les Paul! That Alex uses more guitars, with more tunings, than Neil has drums!🤔Yeah, well maybe not but you get it.🤘🖖✌️🎸🎸🥁🎹🎤
Absolutely bananas! I noticed the dryers behind Getty stopped. Funny thing is during the show in Milwaukee (and prob this one too), a couple roadies invade the stage mid-song at some point to put more coins in the machine to get them going again. Then I remember during a break (maybe it was intermission) they opened them up and tossed the "laundry" into the crowd. They were Rush concert T-shirts. Hilarious.
Seen so many times by now, but still love it. :) Sometimes in other versions Alex wanders off in the solo section a bit too far for my taste as I really liked his studio version and in this one he sticks pretty close to the studio version. I think they all nailed it.
I did notice on this track in particular, the bass does not stand out as much as I would like it. But after hearing how they had to scramble to just get gear dried out and ready for the concert, I am not surprised there are some sub-optimal aspects to the recording.
The mix is fine for my ears. I was not keen on the studio version of the Pass but live its a different animal. In fact I think anything after PW to Snakes was better played live.
Idk? To me, this is one of their better mixed live performances. R30, and R40 or pretty avoided by me, and I'm one of those who likes the original mix of Vapor Trails 😂 Take care ✌️
There were many problems with the equipment, rain, etc. at the shows in Brazil. I think the show in Rio almost didn't happen. I was there. It was wonderful. There were many problems with assembling the equipment. That's why the mix isn't so good.
I actually like the roughness of the mix. It works well for this show. I remember hearing R30 for the first time and thinking that it lacked energy compared to Rio.
That's a solid Rush ballad. It might not be as sophisticated and mature as say By Tor and the Snow Dog, but it's fine. If we're crapping on dull tunes from Rush, The Color of Right- yikes, Tai Shan (ultra uber yikes) or something like Faithless which plods and is kind of bitchy, those type of tunes are musically meh and lyrically .. not my cuppa.
Wow yeah... its different for them, for sure. I like Available Light. I thought Geddy's vocal part was a nice surprise. This is an example of them taking risks and it working out... to me at least.
@Justin Panariello I always thought that taking risks and havingvit work out was what separated them from most really good bands and made them great. Try to find a great band that sounded as different on consecutive albums like Moving Pictures and Signals. Most bands stick close to the comfort zone ( not sure if its for music or financial reasons) but Rush seemed to thrive on risks . Most bands bad stuff doesn't stray far from their good stuff
Perhaps one of reasons for the poor mix is because this concert was the first time ever in their careers that they did not do a sound check!!! It had poured rain all day and it prevented them from doing one.
I mentioned Geddy’s vocals being too low (for me). I’ve realised that if I watch the video and “see” him singing I can enjoy it albeit I’d prefer them a touch higher. I can’t listen to the audio version of Rush in Rio as my ears are struggling to hear him. I also prefer VT remix you cheeky bugger you 😄
I never understood why Rush gigs were always all-seating in the US & Europe. I'm sure Rush had plenty of fans that wanted to go a bit mental like this.
It was all standing in Edinburgh on the Signals tour, we were a bit younger then ☺️ I did think it might have been great if in later years they made, say, the first 10 or 20 rows free standing. The people on the floor tended to stand up during the performance which could have been ok.
@@SandyWhisker It's bit hard to mosh to Virtuality with a row of seats in front and behind you 😂 Maybe they were concerned about security, people who took kids, and they didn't want to deal with all the hassle over safety, etc.
Studio albums should be polished. Live albums should be raw. At least, that's my opinion. I bet folks saying they think the mix is bad in Rush in Rio also probably like Exit... Stage Left the most of the live albums. Nothing wrong with it, but if I want to hear the polished version of a song, I can listen to the studio album. But if I'm listening to the live album, I want to hear something live, in the moment. Raw, spontaneous. ESL sounded sterile to me. So yeah, the mix isn't perfect. That's kind of the point. All those pesky "Fans" getting in the way!
My favorite performance of the entire dvd! Absolutely amazing crowd…can you imagine basically the crowd putting their lyrics to an instrumental! RUSH should have gotten a GRAMMY based in this performance alone!
You can't sing along an instrumental song!
Brazil crowd:
Hold my beer
This moment had to be one of the highlights of their careers - and one of the highlights of those audience members’ lives.
If I'd have been in that audience I'd have melted...

this was the first time I ever saw/heard an audience SING and entire instrumental at a rock concert. Brazilian audiences are .... passionate.
Those Rio fans must've been really starving for entertainment, they're going ape shite crazy 😅
This is the best version of YYZ, no contest.
Ill never get tired of this song
The guys had no clue how popular they were in Brazil before they decided to tour there. The energy coming off the audience here is wild!
Everyone should enjoy a concert and life like this. Life is too short, don't be cold, be hot as Brazilians in a Rush's concert
Another GREAT reaction!!! I know you like the song Scars, check it out LIVE somewhere around 1990, you will really like it then! They rarley played it live and I've been to over 100 concerts...
As a musician on stage performing this and you see the audience engaged with you like this it has to get your juices flowing extra strong doesn't it?
Love this performance.
Watching 40K+ crazed South American fans singing along to a instrumental never gets old.🤘🏻👏
Great performance & great reaction from the best alumni of Berkeley School Music on UA-cam.😉
Finally getting their flowers, way OVERDUE!!!!

Considering they never even got a sound check. I think the mix is fairly miraculous. Appreciate you continuing on this journey.
Good reason audience went bananas… Rush is great! 😊
I read that it rained and the equipment and recording had issues.....the sound, video production people did an amazing job to salvage what we could have and do hear.
As an avid air drummer at my one and only Rush concert, this live always makes me smile!
I used to love the crew of air drummers at every Rush concert. They were always bunched up in the front row no matter what state I saw them in (and I saw Rush in four different US states).
Such a great performance!! The crowd just had to be really pumping them up!! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!

A Neil Peary drumstick throw was always worth a cheer!!!
But I did see him drop it once😳😳😳😳

I think the mix is good, to say the problems they had with rain and being out doors!
The mix is a little off but it’s not getting blocked to if stay stick with it. Thanks for another great reaction. I enjoy listening with you.
YYZ the code for airport recognizing that the boys from Toronto Canada are coming home...lol
I think the mix is good, but I'm also listening to this on a set of great speakers with a sub.
Seen so many times by now, but still love it. :)

The only problem with the mix is that its in a huge soccer stadium and I think that gives it well. A stadium sound.

RUSH YYZ in RIO!!!! React!!!!
I actually like the roughness of the mix. It works well for this show. I remember hearing R30 for the first time and thinking that it lacked energy compared to Rio.
Yeah Rio is more rock and roll whereas R30 is more for looks and style, both are good though
@@geddylee501 that’s a great way to put it. Totally agree. Both are awesome in different ways.
Redemption!? Thank you!
WHAT!!!
You liked available light??? That one is toward the bottom of my list of all Rush songs. Wow.😮
I love that one.

The mix wasn't perfect but it is not terrible.
Let the detractors like their choosing. For I like what I like and so on.
Never liked the studio version of the pass. The live Rio version is great. Alex lifeson kills it as usual. Great guitarist.

Curiously enough, they never went back to Brazil/South America after this. Maybe they weren't arsed about overly enthusiastic crowds 🤷 haha
@@rumourhats They did play a few dates there on the Time Machine Tour.

Lol they need it after that riot 😂 👍
The mix is good, but there are moments when I don’t like it. “The Pass” is far better live cuz…… Live Rush is the BEST Rush.
I don't think the band was happy with the mix.
