DUDE! I just pulled the trigger on an LTD SC-607B1H today and was thinking to myself "you know, it'd be amazing if somebody happened to use this guitar to play Korn" Not only did you do this, but you ALSO talked about gear to dial in on that Korn tone. Amazing... amazing... AMAZING. Thank you for this video.
sweeet. i get to see korn for the first time with one of my favorite bands, Chevelle (3rd time which i’m honestly more excited about). but i’m stoked and this video spoke to that lol. thanks for the content dude.
You’re pretty much spot on with the tones. Yes they use 21 quite often. Nothing quite like that tone tho with that specific pedal. Great work as usual!!
Hey man well done! You should try to scoop the Rectifier a bit more. The Triple Rectifier has been the core of the sound since Life is Peachy. Both Head and Munky keep the Treble and Bass at 6, turn the Mids down to 3-4 and keep the Gain at around 6-7. Munky also likes to use alot of Presence. From my experience a Triple Rectifier sounds a bit more scooped and wider than a Dual Rectifier so you might turn the mids down even further when using the Dual Rectifier. Back in the day they were both using Marshall 1960B cabs with V30. In late 1999/early 2000 they both switched to Mesa oversized straight cabs. The Marshall cabs deliver a bit more lowmids and less bass. They continued to use Marshall cabs in the studio. They also like to blend amps in the studio. These are the most common Amps they use to blend with a Rectifier in the studio: Diezel VH4 (which was included into the live rig during the untouchables touring cycle), Bogner Überschall, Diezel Herbert, Bogner Shiva and a modded Marshall. The XP100 is definitely the one of the most crucial parts to the Korn tone so I'm glad you included it into the video. There are alot parts that are actually played an octave down and then shifted up using the whammy. Also really important are the paser pedals that they use to get this sorta tremolo effect. This is usually done with a EHX small stone or a Dunlop Uni-Vibe. Munky also uses the MXR Phase 90.
Man I went through that model of whammy like crazy in my band . The sensor constantly broke from using it on tour and techs could not fix them at all . Basically when supposed to be back at normal tuning at some point the sensor stopped going all the way back . My first time with this problem was in the studio . My guitar was constantly going out of tune ( so we thought ) . Eventually realizing the sensor never went back to the spot after awhile , .fun times lol. Cool video and tones man fr
I’ll take any you have laying around with this problem. Or perhaps share the tricks I came up with to keep the XP100-200-300 and the old RP series alive. I still run an XP100, and I’m down to one after our storage got ransacked.
Thanks buddy, I've been searching the net on how to achieve Korns Heavy sound, just bought the XP 100, I can't wait to use it on my Apex 20 :). Cheers bud 🍻
Wow, that was awesome! Such an organic and raw guitar tone. Any chance you're going to recreate the KoRn sound of the Recto with Helix only? Would highly appreciate that. I'm so in love with your channel right now 😁 Thanks a lot for your work!
Great video! Was a bit off from their mid scooped standard settings but hey, rectifier and XP100 is 99% of it all haha. Tasty riffs too! Never use prog 21, thanks for that info will try now!
Tight and epic, as usual! Exactly what I want to hear, since I've got a KoRn-esque song in the works. I have to pick my old faithful XP-100 down from the shelf once again. It does work and sound better than the new ones, comparing. Too bad about that AC power thing... 😕
I really want to see someone do a video like this capturing Korn's self titled and Life is Peachy tone. I believe it was a JCM 900 blended with a small solid state practice amp.
Amazing! Question for you, I just got the xp-100 and I’m using munky’s signature guitar and can’t get it to sound “crushing in your face like that…. I’m using a Randall amp at the moment but have a triple rectifier on the way….. dose the rectifier make all the difference and will this help?
Also tho I’m using a boss GT-1 effects processor for distortion as I have no other distortion at the moment and am running through the effects loop and might be loosing signal…. But I kno Korn uses the triple rectifiers distortion, that will give it that “huge” upfront clarity?
If I'm not mistaken, on their earlier albums they used a Hughes & Kettner Attax 100 blended with their Mesa amps on the studio recordings, as well as using it for their clean tones on some songs
they only used the h&k live maybe in the early days. the first 2 korn albums are ross robinson's own 70s marshall jmp amp (also used on sepultura's roots) blended with a very small speaker vintage tube combo amp from the indigo ranch studios. nothing else. on life is peachy they blended in a bit of dual rectifier here and there. follow the leader is all recto. issues is mostly a modded jcm800 bought by munky for the recording at the suggestion of brendan'o'brien. issues had more of the rectifier sound blended in also. untouchables is rectos and diezel vh4 through standard celestion t75 cabs, take a look in the mirror is all rectos through standard marshall cabs again.
Hi) what do you mean by using speaker response before impulse response and which plugin and speaker response do you use for that ? You made an incredible sound man 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
@@SonicDriveStudio i mean they are known for having amazing tone. I had to buy the 100 watt evh el34 when I heard joe say thats what they record with. I believe he said he uses the stealth live tho.
Why does the XP 100 have an input level knob on it and the Whammy 4 doesn't? I always had trouble figuring out where exactly to set the input level knob. Also when you use setting 21 on xp100, how do you get it to sound so clean? When I use that setting or some of the other settings on the xp100, it can sound so wobbly and not clear and solid.
Even though Stephen Carpenter is my favorite guitarist, sadly I can't afford his seven strings. Can you suggest a more affordable seven string that sounds almost the same? Thank you.
A friend is offering his mesa rectoverb 50 combo for my peavey 5150 signature and a modded Fender Bassman to friedman BE specs. All in all, its a 1350$ trade. But im really hesitant to let go of my 5150. As someone who have tried A LOT of amps, do you think i should pull the trigger on this deal?
May I ask what's the input volume of XP-100? I recently got one and with my blackout pickups, signal is clipping constantly and that volume knob seems not working at all -always on max position-.
May i ask did you have any input problems with xp 100 and those active pickups like clipping on the xp100 due to high output of the guitar? I got duncan blackouts and my xp100 is clipping, and input volume knob isnt responsive at all.
Modern metal heads hate this tone. but it had so much personality and nasty grind. I read somewhere they used a modded or handmade overdrive in the recordings broguht by the producer apparently producing the nasty fuzzy edge, very similar to other recordings of the same producer like sepultura roots, it makes sense as you hear those squeals and rich oversaturated texture.
“Modern” 😂. Fuck haters all around. Yesterday I was 16 and today I’m 31. Let me tell you “modern” kids, 99% of the people you hear on the radio have been an established band for 10-20 years so you don’t get to come in thinking the world is yours now. The music industry is one that requires a lot of tech skill along with YEARS of hands on instrumental experience. 10,000hrs to master. Anyone still making music with an actual instrument should be respected. “Metal” is in the intention and gain. If you’ve got any gain whatsoever and you play it with aggressive intent, you’re metal in my book. Respect to our forefathers in the 60s and 70s. They were metal as fuck long before the JCM 800, SLO, Dual Rec or Diezel came along. Metal on the soundtrack from the Doom game is techno meets metal and I LOVE that shit. SO heavy. IMO, Pop Goes Punk was actually metal. What punk bank ever had breakdowns like ADTR?
@@MrMann-gt1eh Ok...I was only speaking about production and sound, young people are not used to the old raw sounding mixes, the chase of a polished clear mix and the access to tech and info is the obvious reason why modern metal mixes sound similar nowadays. On the other hand it was risky, there are a lot of recordings from the 80's and even 90's that are extremely harsh and hard to listen.

As much as I love their Mesa Boogie tone, Their best to me is when they used Rivera amps back in the late 90s.

How you got that saturation plus tightness out of a Duel Rec without an overdrive is beyond me, sonic perfection!
Active pickups help tighten up high gain tones a fair bit
Good job sir! I forgot how massively thick those guitar tones are! Kinda the opposite of most modern prog metal tones!
