Win a set of Tosin's signature Fishman Fluence pickups: bit.ly/WinFishmanFluence
Since our 2013 episode with AAL, guitarist Tosin Abasi has gone back in time (or technology) to use traditional tube heads and pedals, while fellow 8-stringer Javier Reyes continues down the digital rabbit hole with the powerful Fractal Axe-Fx II. Watch as they break down (and demo their) setups with PG’s Perry Bean for over 60 minutes.
Inspired by the recent spur of ergonomic guitar designs and custom builds he’s played, Tosin has been working with Ibanez on this all-original body for his latest signature that’s been in the prototype stage for over a year. Although it is an 8-string guitar, it has a major belly scoop to reduce heft and increase playability. It has a fanned-fret neck that allows the bass strings to have a longer scale length (27), while the treble strings are on a traditional scale (24.75). Tosin prefers the sound of bolt-on guitars (and acknowledges that this will reduce production cost) and it is loaded with his signature Fishman Fluence pickups. Tosin uses D’Addario NYXL custom 8-string sets (.0095-.074) and Dunlop .73 mm signature picks (similar to a Jazz III, but slightly larger).
Javier Reyes recently scored this custom-made ESP Vintage Plus 8-string that has a gold Floyd Rose trem and a features the same neck profile and inlays that are on his current ESP signature model. It is equipped with a custom set of DiMarzio single-coils. He uses D’Addario NYXL custom 8-string sets (.0095-.074) and Dunlop .73 mm signature picks (similar to a Jazz III, but slightly larger).

"I need it if I'm doing something simple like..." *Plays 800 chords*
... Wes Montgomery-style
HAHAHAHA mt thoughts exactly
LOL....you beat me to it! @ 24:28
Yeah I thought the same thing it was funny man these cats can play
He played the first chord of a contortionist’s song aha
Tosin seems like he would be a great college professor
He even said once that if he didnt do guitar as a career he would have moved to europe and become a philosophy professor.
He's such an interesting and unique dude I would listen to him. Maybe when he's 50 he will transition lol
Very articulate in his words. Sincere and genuine , down to earth . I’d love to play guitar with him and just have a convo with him
@@bryanmerritt1812 I find it quite sad that such a normal, down-to-earth conversation like that is becoming rarer these days.
Is that your professional opinion?Haha!
0:36 What a save.
what!!!! damn. Impressed.
I mean, its Tosin, he is not human bro. Legendary as always
I wonder if Tosin likes to drink Robitusin?
I got laid doing that once!
I like this dude. I want him to get excited about my life... like “WOW what is that? Is that toast? Oh hey we got a little bit of what looks like jelly on that. Super cool. Right on.”
"So looks like you've got butter AND jelly on there. That is CRAZY! Cuz like a lot of guys would only have one or the other, but you've got like both. Wow man!"
Fred Bidwell hahahaha! Exactly!
wow! Man you even cut the crust! That’s awesome dude. Are you kinda one of those guys who likes to burn their toast a little? I’m just curious cause people do that sometimes.
Ron Padgett breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Wtf you guys are great😂
I love how genuine this feels, the interviewers nervousness feels relatable, feels like he’s actually meeting the people he listens to and looks up to.
The SMILE on that guy when Tosin plays...
and I'm like THE FUTURE IS NOW what a trip, good times, buy an ormsby.
el-usnk @28:09 ya mean? This was such a killer rundown wasn’t it? 🙌🙌
For such a technical guitarist tosin is very emotional in his approach. He’s one of the greatest of our generation and all time. He needs to be more celebrated. The things he’s done with the instrument is just staggering.
Tyler Jacobson but even tosin says that javier reyes is the better guitarist of the band.
Abraham Garcia What, do you expect him to say he’s the best? Hendrix thought he wasn’t the best and yet he’s regarded as the best.
@@darthhull85 all opinion but yeah i get yas
@@darthhull85 Hendrix def was not the best, hes up there but Mcglaughlin and countless other jazz guitarists were far better and he knew. Jimi was wildman with a fuzz box and loads of heart.
@@thekitsunewavefunctionband7168 ahh, but mass effect on listeners isn't always about just technical skill; flare and emotion play a big part too, not that i prescribe to "bests."
Just realized that Javier plays some of my absolute favorite parts from AAL, crazy.
Eddie Raccioppi tosin said a lot of his favorite parts of AAL songs have been javiers. his favorite song on The Joy of Motion is para mexer, which javier came up with.
Love that Tosin and Javier, along with being incredible players, are also really nice down-to-earth guys. Perry knows his stuff and I enjoyed seeing his amazement them both play. Watching this was a pleasure.
I'm not worthy ×10
That 8 string strat will haunt my dreams forever, so cool!
8 string Vintage Plus*
Those 8 string strandbergs are relatively affordable, runs about £1.5k tops
Joshua, for the Korean version probably.. The Sweden made are way above that..
Yeah, obviously, the Swedish strandberg stuff is beautiful but the stuff of dreams
Fucken Ormbsy mate get one. I done got an Sx-7 6 months ago and its the best bloody guitar I've ever played its literally ridiculous. I'm wet just thinking about it everyone buy one just do it trust me for real like 100%
Woah, Tosin that type of guy who starts randomly talking about naturally aspirated V12's on fast cars while in the middle of a conversation about amps!
He's obsessed with Porsche I think.
Eric he said he loves german cars
DAVID BAKER good one
Fun fact, Tosin Abasi has an Audi r8
0:37 even his greeting is double-handed :D
Tosin Absai is a national treasure
These "Rig Rundown" interviews are so damn awkward. But, for some reason, I still can't stop watching them.
And I wouldn’t have it any other way
28:02 the camera guy finally cant contain the fact that he cant believe what hes seeing/hearing lol!
This is Perry Bean's best interview in 2017 😊 so chill and makes you forget this is one hour interview
I mean, it's chill for Perry. He does do his usual 'twitchy' thing a few times, but he is mostly calm this rundown. The "that's a pretty dank pick you got there" had me rolling.
First interview of his that I've seen and thought it was great! Although the imaginary football kicking/shaking out a fart thing he does is pretty distracting
His body language makes me uncomfortable like when someone terrified of public speaking presents in class
I forgot that I watched this for an hour until I scrolled down and read your comment.
Yeah, but... an hour worth of rebecca dirks wouldn't be that bad.
I don't listen to Animals as Leaders, but this guy is something else.
Also just realized this video is an hour long. It was a quick hour and I'm sad it ended.
Just when I thought I was done building my pedal board, Tosin has to go and screw it all up!
That's awesome! Definitely going to have to be my next buy. I got a chance to hear it at NAMM on his board and it sounds massive.
@Jack Nicholson right on. As soon as I heard how nasty that tone got, my immediate reaction was "I need this pedal"
Got to meet tosin and nick johnston during a guitar center tour; both insane players, we are all fortunate to be living during this guitar renaissance!
I was just thinking this to myself. We are lucky to be alive with the amount of guitar tech there is nowadays. You can do pretty much everything.
my fave part of the video is where Tosin plays like 700 riffs each from different songs over the last 10 years of the band like AYOOOO I rememba that one
Been following this band for some time now and I just realized this is this first I've heard Javier speak hahaha
"It's cool to see what the country guys are doing..."
As a bluegrass musician, this was the LAST thing I expected Tosin Abasi to say.
a conversation with two men with no side hair
The 'Gay Nazi' look. VERY trendy right now.
Technically three men with no side hair.
mano a mano I'd say it's a modern thing. Not for everyone
@@CryThunderdarealone It's a hairstyle that's been around since like the late 1800's/early 1900's. Before the Nazi party was even formed.
Andy Warski's super chat shekels Yes, but I'm speaking in a context of modern fashion and whatnot. Heck, even I chopped my long hair for an undercut
Tosin is pure alien but Javier's warm lines has me melting
It took a whole hour to go through all of the gear of a three-piece. That's impressive.
Yeah it’s so impressive to own a lot of shit. This band is cringe af
@@NoName-fo7mz ur cringe asf
These guys are badass for explaining everything, fantastic artists. Thanks to premier guitar as well.
Javier “Why do we right it so hard” Reyes
Tosin has to be one of the greatest guitarists I’ve seen... His right hand, that thumb... plays it like a damn pick. He literally can sweep pick with his damn fingers at the speed of light, and his chord intricacies are bonkers, so delicate. Oh yeah, he plays like he does it in his sleep, no struggle whatsoever. Freaky...
1:00:17 The look on Javier's face when the interviewer says that the newer songs sound more "musical" than the old stuff.
Really cool to see an artist get into something different and really take it somewhere and make it their own. There are a billion of us playing essentially the same guitars and playing essentially the same music with those guitars. Whether you appreciate or like Tosin's music or not you have to admire the man's quest for his unique strain of music.
Tosin is absolutely brilliant, evident in musical complexity, innovation and the way he articulates everything! Fantastic! 🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿💯✨✨✨
Yk what’s so funny, is that I’ve seen these videos in my recommended for years, but now as I get into more music I see the same videos I’ve seen forever but I get excited like they just dropped 😂😂
Tosin is such a creative guy and it really shows in everything he does. Love his style and we needed a great guitar god for kids to look up to these days.
"Good tone lurks everywhere" - sage advice
jeddak Very much so. I’m gonna try some Celestion open back 2x12 IR’s. I’ve been only getting closed thus far. I’m curious.
I have that concept with my profession as a cocktail, bartender
I met Tosin in 2014 and he was just as nice and chill as he seems here. He stood and talked to me and a friend for 10-15 minutes like it wasn’t a problem for him and he just finished his show. Great dude and great player.
It’s amazing to see these guitar parts you know and love outside of the music. The True Tone from the guitar to pedals to amp is just amazing...
Sad we didn't get to see Garstka's drums but other than that, wonderful rundown. Fingers crossed you got an updated Periphery one as well.
Next. Week.
B_Ontic I would honestly love if these kind of videos focused also on drums and whatever lies behind their show (backing tracks, lighting rig, ecc..), but coming from a channel called "Premier guitar" I can't really blame them, I guess :-D
B_Ontic Check the Premier Drum channel.
About time you include Drums on your Rig Rundowns!
Premier Guitar seriously? 😍
Glad I stuck till the end, lots of interesting tones, I think I'm most enamored with the Submachine Fuzz Octave pedal Javier was rocking, such a warm thick fun sound, must investigate.
Tosin is super generous. Excellent rundown, thanks!
Great episode. Loving the actual tone demos, more of this in the future!
We try every time ... sometimes the universe is just against us! Thanks for watching.
Premier Guitar I'd glad it worked out this time. Thank you, PG!
I almost feel like an hour isn't enough time to listen to Tosin talk about his rig and input on gear. The guy is a musical genius and the most innovated musician by far in music today. I feel like his craft is continuing to grow and hasn't hit that skill wall yet. I will forever be a fan of this guy. He's one of them artist, you can not wait to see what's next for him.
I just imagined myself restringing and setting up Tosin's signature guitar and started getting cold sweats.
I once had a dream I made Tosin an 16-string guitar (8x2 with octave strings like a 12-string) and as soon as he got his hands on it one of the octave strings broke ;-;
So much respect for Tosin Abasi. Such a monster musician, at the same time such a huge guitar nerd, and just seems to happy to be talking about his passion. What a legend.
I love that he couldn't help but ask about the thump technique. Its such an alien sound.
Kind of interesting seeing him essentially ditch the AxeFX and Fractal for a tube amp. Not seeing many people going that way. More in the heavier genres seem to be going digital and not back to analog.
Agreed. Saw them with Periphery in Grand Rapids. I had heard the guys in Periphery say they still used amps on stage for the people in the front so I had assumed AAL did the same and that's why I was seeing amps on stage, but I had no idea that they were using them to this degree.
I think digital modeling amps are appealing for their consistency and ease to transport. Imo any guitarist would take real tube amp and big cab rigs if they could afford it. If anything, it's a sign that he's becoming big enough that he can bring what he wants.
Spot on Dom!
Ben Adams the modeling thing is a huge money saver for touring musicians that pay a fortune in shipping. .that's the main draw in using Kemper and fractal. But for studio or when you want to get the better tone, there's no substitute for cranking a valve amp..
Are they actually using them 100% tho? Looks like they're using them as super expensive power amps.
Not crazy about what he plays, but i love how he is taking his style somewhere. We need that for guitar. My problem is i saw Stanley Jordan in 82-83? in a jazz bar in milwaukee when i was a sophomore. So the technique has been around . But he has commitment to his style. And i like how equipment is being developed alongside what he is doing.
Great stuff
Fantastic rundown. Informative on so many levels.
Wow! These guys are fantastic musicians! Nice interviews too. Thanks.
Javier is so talented and amazing as a player and yet really humble
i really dig his mestis project
"I call it like whale sex sounds or somethin"
"Yeah, yeah. Sure"
there are many noises that can be made in music that i would refer to as whale sex. That deep, mysterious, mind bending whale sex.
I just learned about Tosin today. Wow! He is one articulate and nice guy. He speaks as well as he plays! God bless him.
Although I'm more of a blues player, this is so inspirational! The guitars, the amp setup. LIKE IT VERY MUCH! I also use a Morgan 20 watt amp for totally different types of music, so cool to see and hear that this amp just takes every style really well.
you know you are pretty much God when Paul Reed Smith sends you a pedal...
He built him a guitar as gift as well
@@summeronio9751 he has the semi hollow 8 string that's not one of the guitars he sold too.
Most players send their tech out for these interviews. These guys seem like nice people and great players.
I did not expect his amp setup to be that simplified. Awesome.
Outstanding video, thank you for creating and posting it, much appreciated my brother : )
Best episode in a good while. PROPER interesting in the hows and whys. There's always some gems on rig rundown but most of the time my rig would make for a far more interesting vid when it's more unoriginal simple pairings of vintage things (tasty as they look and sound regardless!). This has plenty of unexpected, interesting, along with good sound examples. :D
Rig Rundown kind of died when Rebecca Dirks left. She legitimately asked the right questions.
this guys clearly pretty talented. awesome + generous how he does the rig rundown himself rather than his tech, plus demo-ing every pedal. thats really cool.
Honestly, Perry's my favorite because he asks the questions that I'd ask, keep it up
Tremendous episode. Thanks guys!
I think Tosin is not only my favorite musician now, but He might be my hero.
"You wanna hear how well it's working?" LMAO
That was great!
The best Rig Rundowns are when the artist play the rig! Thank you premier guitar.
These guys are just incredible players and very humble. Love their music. Drummer is incredible to. The new kings of Prog.
I can't wait for those Abasi signature guitars to come out. Instantly ordering.
If Ormsby GTR models were out id instantly... oh wait they are and I did.

One of the best guitarists of our time should be a household name. What a sick rig I want it! Top Rig Rundowns for sure
Interesting to see Tosin and Misha abandoning Axe FX II for traditional tube amps when they were the main ambassadors for Fractal for many years.
Way to copy the comment before yours.
you new to consider the money that comes by being sponsor to..
I heard in an interview that the fractal was used out of necessity when starting out and now that they have the luxury of a full setup, they're taking advantage of it.
This really makes sense. I own EVH 5150 and a 4x12 but I switched to Helix LT because everytime I go to play a gig I'm the one carrying the gear. If I had crew carrying my stuff I'd use amps and pedals.
Misha is still using Axe fx on tour. Everyone in Periphery is
Unbelievable guitarist!! Perrys face when he starts running round the neck!! There are some amazing players out there but these guys are up there with the greatest ever for sure!!
DOPE! Bringing it back

Honestly, (though I'm a fellow tap-style guitarist) Animals As Leaders aren't really my style-but I totally bought a Bonger Harlow after watching this rig rundown. My favorite rig rundown-dude.
Not even a big fan of the band, just love hearing about Tosin's gear. So interesting and also he seems such a nice guy.
Also the playing is pretty great
Stephen Owen yeah I don’t have a lot of patience for the band itself but this guy is clearly a wizard
Jason Litherland I am mixed. I find it a bit oppressive to listen to but the clean stuff Tosin does is just too good to be true.
I just discovered these guys literally two days ago! Sick stuff
I love how different all his drives sound. Combined with his technique, you’d think he’s switching guitars. Almost sounded like a strat when he went into the carl martin for example. Really smart set up
