There's a great book on buffalo preservation history around the time of RDO by Michael Punke, titled 'Last Stand: George Bird Grinnell, the Battle to Save the Buffalo, and the Birth of the New West.' A touch I liked in RDR1 was that the number of buffalo was finite. If you killed them all, that's it. No more in the game. It nicely communicated their near extinction.

I try not to hunt them since I knew of the history and how rare they were back in 1898/99. Back in middle school I did a lot of reading about the Bison trade, and so I feel bad shooting them in RDR2. Whitetails though, I hunt them all lol

Rockstar should add to the game a bounty on anyone seen shooting the buffalo.
It would make the hunt more interesting i think, and if the player gets shot and killed by the deputies, he loses the pelt.
Perhaps the pelts could only be sold in dodgy places like thieves landing or Van horn.

Maybe also have it in the game where you have to judge the fence for the illegal pelts, just like say Ivory today which can fetch a small fortune on the black market; many dealers get busted in stings and some get robbed.
That could be for illegal pelts and animal products, but there would also be laws to set quotas, seasons etc for animals that are legal to hunt. Maybe they could have it that you can sell your legal quota to officials outlets and the ones you poached to a fence. Sometimes the price is higher, sometimes it's lower and they know your more desperate to off load them like that story mode mission when you steal the horses.

Just to point out the Henry fired a rim fire .44cal round which was basically a weak .44 Special. So I'm not surprised that neither cartridge had very little effect on the frontal portion of a bison skull which would be the thickest part of the skull since bison do butt heads and lock horns to establish dominance. However if you put the round back by the ear with say a .45-70, Spencer .56-56 or .56-50 or a .50cal Sharps pretty sure the outcome would be different. Also shooting into soft tissue with any round also causes hydraulic damage to the surrounding areas thus causing far more damage than just an area the diameter of the round. Shooting a bison through the heart and lungs would shred the tissue of the organs.

Historically speaking sharps were uncommon and most buffalo hunters used the Remington rolling block chambered in 45/70, repeating rifles with a higher caliber or leftover rifles from the civil war, the reason for this is that sharps rifles were expensive and didn't come along until sometime in the 1870s which was around the time that bison in the southern states were rare and in northern states were getting increasingly harder to find

A herd of a dozen or so Bison on the Great Plains may not be historically accurate for 1898, but they are a great way to quickly fill your hunting wagon. If you sell a 3* pelt plus the horn that's nearly as good as a 3* whitetail, and much quicker. You also get beef steaks you can sell to the butcher or cook up for yourself.
Knowing it's just digital and you can ride off and find the same herd the next day is of course a great salve to my conscience.

Speaking of Buffalo in Red Dead Online, yesterday I got a pretty sick kill on some. Basically I was hunting in great plains to get materials for my trader, and I found some Bison. So I accidentally lined up a perfect shot and killed 2 with one rifle bullet, and I'm happy I was able to record it when it happened. Such a fun game, I'm able to kill endangered animals in droves without negative irl repercussions.
I think my Red Dead Online character is singlehandedly responsible for all of our modern day hunting restrictions lmfao

Contrary to the song “Home on the Range,” buffalo do not roam in the American West. Instead, they are indigenous to South Asia (water buffalo) and Africa (Cape buffalo), while [bison](www.britannica.com/story/whats-the-difference-between-buffalo-and-bison) are found in North America and parts of Europe.

I hunt them the most easiest way to hunt them like they did in Dances With Wolves you simply get on your horse run at them and shoot them with your arrows until they're dead it sounds barbaric but it's easy and fun that's the easy part actually locating where they are that's hard

Red dead is fairly unrealistic in general in terms of hunting, as you would typically aim at the heart of lungs for most animals, but it seems that in red dead, a head shot is always the most effective way to kill an animal. As a hunter in real life, (not experienced yet, I got my license last fall), I can say that a headshot would not be the desired method to kill an animal, especially if you want it taxidermied.
