This isn’t a spoiler because it’s never clearly stated in the manga, but was revealed in an SBS that Sengoku has the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Daibutsu (Human Human Fruit, Model: Buddha). It’s a mythical type zoan and is a sub-class to Chopper’s Devil Fruit. Chopper just has the standard Hito Hito Fruit.

@@ratiuvictor9533 there's a theory that chopper actually has the caveman or sasquatch fruit. His full human form does NOT look like a normal human. Despite every other zoan having their transformation look exactly like a normal member of their animal type. Lucci turns into a normal Jaguar. Kaku turns into a normal Giraffe. Chopper, on the other hand turns into a big, furry man-beast-thing. Whatever that is, it isn't a regular human. And that's his real fruit's name. Whatever Oda decides to call that. My opinion is that it's the Hito-Hito Nomi Model: Neanderthal. But, of course, that's just a theory and Chopper could just have the normal human fruit.
@@thomasdahlberg5920 i'm pretty sure Oda confirmed in a Sbs that Choppers heavy-point turns him into a full Human, his casual, small form is his hybrid form and his running-point is his normal form, how he would look like without a fruit.

@@Kuhlinn yeah, but he doesn't look human. There are people who are hairy. His heavy point has FUR. Oda uses the SBS to explain things, but not for spoilers. If he intends to do what the theory says, of course he wouldn't say "Oh. Choppers fruit actually is the ancient human fruit" in an SBS. He would continue with the running narrative. I'm just saying that it's possible, if not probable that Chopper doesn't have the normal human fruit.
Tekking knew what he was doing when he said "Nobody dies in One Piece" last episode
An important detail is that Ace didn't get executed, he got killed. Garp wouldn't have jumped in if Ace were to be executed on the podium, as it would have been a respectful way for a pirate to die. However, Ace got absolutely disrespectfully killed by Akainu which is why Garp was so angry about it and would have killed Akainu if it wasn't for Sengoku.
Also, Sengoku's original plan was to move the execution ahead to get it quickly over with and not deal with Whitebeard, but it would've damaged their public image. That's why he wanted them to cut all the transponder snails. But then Buggy happened lol

I'm so glad you guys mentioned Luffy's screaming, that is such a underrated moment in the anime. Mayumi Tanaka gave her all there and you can absolutely tell. I have yet to hear any other voice actor in anime deliver the same amount of pure dread and pain as Tanaka's
Luffy received his scar from Akainu, when Jimbe was attacked when carrying Luffy. You would see steam rising from his chest.

37:15 gotta vehemently disagree here, what you guys are talking about is Spandam and Lucci's thing. They use 'Justice' as an excuse to kill and get what they want. From what we see, Akainu *_genuinely_* believes what he's doing is for the greater good for the marines' reputation and the world, even if it means lying and genocide.
Eh, I think their read is still valid. You really don't get a ton from Akainu in terms of motives so I can understand why they read him that way.
If Akainu just wanted to kill someone, he could have killed tonnes of men in the war. Yet he tenaciously went for Luffy
Which is honestly more terrifying! It's one thing to have people who use justice as a front for their own personal power trips. It's another to have someone who _genuinely and vehemently believes_ in the kind of justice Akainu does, because that belief gives them the drive to _really_ see it through to all the worst possible ends.
You can possibly reason, bribe or intimidate someone like Spandam out of what he's doing, but Akainu _will not_ let up, because what he's doing is for the greater good in his mind.
Marco can regenerate BECAUSE he is a phoenix . Also x-drake Dino fruit is an ancient zoan not to be mixed with mythical ( legendary animals/humans) that give properties of an animal and a bonus ability (like sengoku with the buhda shock waves)
marco can regenerate because of his flame type. not because he's a phoenix. the difference between mythical and ancient is very simple, mythical are fictional beings, ancient are old animals which did exist. nothing to do with what they can do with their abilities

I binged your guys podcast all week and now I’m all caught up and just gotta say can’t wait to see more. You guys have me exactly what I wanted when I searched for a one piece podcast. To see you guys go through this story with fresh eyes has hyped me up and gave me the feelings I’ve felt when I first watched one piece and your hilarious . I fell in love with it when it first was dubbed by 4kids and was crushed that it got canceled enough for me to suck it up and watch anime subbed for the first time ever and one piece made me respect and love subbed because even though I did love the whacky edits of the 4kids version it did not do the anime justice and I believe that’s where a lot of initial hate comes from for one piece. Anyways keep it up can’t wait till your all caught up

Let’s not forget that Garp also spent decades fighting along side Sengoku where they saved each other multiple times. It’s like choosing between one family and another. His men in the Marine are his family just as much as Luffy is. Sengoku and Garps relationship, I imagine would be similar to Luffy and Zoro’s. Garp had the hardest choice to make in the series.
Garp sitting there for so long added so much more tension.
I love that whitebeard allows squard to stab him, and Garp allows Luffy to beat him down. Such great displays of love and emotional turmoil
you misread about people being able to have 2 powers. the two people talking were not marines, the were whitebeard pirates. pretty sure one of them was Marco. Marco is the one who answers the question with something like "it shouldn't be possible, but you're part of the WB pirates, you know what a weird body he has" referring to Blackbeard. Make of that what you will :)
I just checked the manga chapter to make sure i wasn't spoiling something, but I'm right. the exact quote from Marco is "That's true for normal humans... but as you know, Teech isnt normal. His body is... odd. Maybe that explains it." Nothing about the strongest being able to do it is said.
If you pay attention to pre war preparation, there was a talk about kaido joining the war. It was Shanks who stopped Kaido from joining the war (don't know how, even without a scratch on his crew) and still show up at the Marine Ford from the New World and managed to stop the war.
It was a day before Marineford and when Shanks showed up at Marineford, the marines mentioned how is he already here.
Yup on the latest anime episode, that beast said he got some free time due to shanks interceptions. That oni truly loved chaos huh 😂
30:20 funny you mention that, Buggy's comedic bits getting stretched out to the point they stopped being funny in Impel Down and Marineford was my personal breaking point with the anime. I've switched to the manga since and never regretted it.
Not sure if you guys caught this because it wasn’t mentioned, but Akainu was also the vice-admiral who blew up the ship carrying Ohara’s citizens. I didn’t catch it my first time through.
Garp's one of my favorite characters in OP, and his conflict in Marineford is such an important part of this arc.
Also, Croc really said "yeah I'm an early villain? so what? I will clash with top fighters here and still act arrogant as ever, fuck you guys"

@@mediumchicago_pizza Well One Piece was originally only meant to be 5 years long, but then it kept getting longer and longer and Oda realized he brought in Crocodile too early, thus the prison buff spawned into existence.
@@numberhunter62 oh i dont mind the prison buff, it’s just oda’s usually pretty good at powerscaling and crocodile’s power up makes little sense from an in-story perspective lol. aside from that one piece my fave manga, just wish kaido and his crew got a devil fruit awakening
Great job identifying the role of the media in One Piece. It’s going to get a bigger role in the future, but until now the ‘power levels’ in One Piece (bounties) were basically just empty numbers made as a public communication as well. Buggy’s position in this arc is also a good example of how public perception can be warped.

Been years since I watched Ace get murdered in the anime while catching up to OP. I wasn't apart of the anime community then or knew what it was. This arc tore me up inside being a younger brother my self to many older siblings. Just thinking of losing a sibling like this in front of me brings tears to my eyes. Needless to say I spent many minutes in my bed holding my pillow crying over Ace's death. Still hurts to think of to this day. Kudos to Goda for being able to connect you to fictional characters in ways many couldn't even imagine.
I'm glad you guys had so much focus on Garp. people always talk about Whitebeard and Ace in marineford but I feel for Garp, man. he just loves both navy and his family, and to put him in a situation in between that.. man. Oda is good
The mention with having a second devil fruit was Marco saying "yeah that's normally the case but Teach's body is a little different" or something along those lines.
So it's not a question of being "super powerful" or anything. Blackbeard's just _different_ in some way. We still don't know what kind of a screwed up secret there may be to his body, but it's something unique to him.
Marco, by the way, is the head of the ship doctors of the Whitebeard pirates. So he if anyone would know of someone among them having a weird body.

The regeneration part of Marco's mythical fruit (bird bird model Phoenix) has nothing to do with the zoan part or awakening it, but specifically the mythical bird part. Its the flames of regeneration of the Phoenix that make him regenerate thise wounds so easy.

You saw how Luffy got the scar when he was carried by Jimbei Akainu punched Jimbei from the back and that punch pass through Jimbei's body and hit Luffy too.

I think before Ace was freed, Garp was very torn on what he should do, being the hero of the Marines, he can't just outright save Ace.
After Ace was freed, he was probably super relieved to see him escaping, he certainly wasn't going to step in to stop him from escaping.
But when Ace gets punched through, for Garp, it's like going from a super stressful situation, to finally relief, and then sudden grief and rage, it was the straw that broke the camel's back and his emotions finally took over.

For the most part you guys did a great job on covering a crazy, info dump arc, couple of quick points.
Re: Blackbeard having 2 devil fruits - the quote from Marco commenting on this has a lot of interpretations/causes plenty of debates but the jist is that he's basically saying that there's something special/strange about Blackbeard/his body that enables him to do this, it's definitely not a case where strong people can just eat/have multiple powers. Theres a lot of theories about why he's able to 'steal' WB's power & we still don't know much about devil fruits honestly, even 1000+ chapters in, but definitely don't be under the impression that characters with multiple fruits will start popping up.
Re: Sabo speculation, you'll find answers to most of your questions in the next section of the story however (& I know it's almost unavoidable for you guys as content creators & it's been brought up a bunch already) but it is disappointing that you've found a lot of spoilers about future events & characters through the course of venturing into the series, even searching pictures of characters & seeing their designs etc can ruin some pretty substantial plot points.
No hate at all, just wish you were able to experience the raw reactions to moments the same as many long term readers, however I guess you'll just have to catch up quicker 😉
the best part of the shanks showing up imo is actually the moment between ben beckman and kizaru. kizaru wanted all the smoke with marco the phoenix but the second beckman pointed his gun at kizaru he was like nah bro im good

Just to clear up any misunderstanding, Zoan devil fruit awakening doesn’t have anything to do with self regeneration, that’s specific to Marco’s fruit. Chopper can’t regenerate like Marco, but I will say a lot of the fandom considers Choppers Monster point to be his awakening.
Zoan awakenings and regeneration was explained in impel down.

@@al3xIa2 Faster recovery is regeneration. Regeneration can be divided into a spectrum from low to high. Zoan recovery can be attributed to low regeneration.
This really is a masterpiece of an arc and you two nailed the discussion on it!
Marineford more than any other arc gives me confidence in Oda’s ability to pay things off.
Only warning is be careful with the anime, pretty soon here I think the pacing gets bad enough to be considered unwatchable for some. I know some of my favorite arcs are hated by the anime community because they start adapting less than 1 chapter per episode and the pacing slows down to a crawl.
If you binge watch the anime and lower ur expectations it’s pretty good sometimes as the music is still top notch even after 20+ years for good scenes
I think their approach has been good so far, read the manga first & foremost & then watch clips of important scenes/moments - this is how I recommend people to consume OP, especially post-timeskip
WB-Ace dialogue put in perspective the WB-Shanks meeting, when Shanks told him to order Ace to stop hunting BB. Now we see that WB knew from the beginning how dangerous BB is and he even ordered Ace not to go after him but Ace just broke his order.
After watching your episode with Tekking, I couldn’t help but subscribe. I love the interactions between the two of you, its very genuine and entertaining. I would love to see Tekking become a guest speaker in future episode. Maybe also try to get Ohara, JoyGirl, and other OP youtubers as guest speakers. That would be awesome. Keep up the great work ya’ll. :)
I only experienced Marineford in the anime. When Ace died I wanted to jump through the screen and give Luffy a hug and cry with him. I was devastated the Straw Hats weren't there to comfort him.
As for one of the best father figures in all of manga and anime, Whitebeard. When he declared with his final breath "The One Piece Does Exist!!" it sent chills down my spine and through to my soul. He died an absolute legend!
I'm pretty sure its stated in one of the name cards either in the manga but definitely in the anime that Sengoku has the mythical zoan type devil fruit human-human model: Buddha. Its like a super amped "god" version of Chopper's fruit.
It's the human-human fruit model: Daibutsu. Which is a statue of a buddha, just to make it a little wierd, i assume lol.
Note that every zoan user we meet has a model type. Makes me wonder if chopper does too “cough cough” “giant” “cough”
@@MatrunksI think oda said in an SBS once that Chopper's doesn't have a model and that's just how some zoans work. They're just the main version.

it's another thing entirely to watch them be killed unceremoniously by someone who basically spat in the face of their beliefs as they did it.
garp was upset that ace was killed. but he was furious that akainu disrespected ace's beliefs as he did so and then turning to kill luffy in the exact same fashion. it's a wonder that garp even had the sense to tell sengoku to keep him pinned down
I love that you specifically pointed out Crocodile eventually fighting more selflessly during this war, you should look up the Croco-Mom theory to find out why that is so noteworthy
I've been loving so much your series of discussions about One Piece and I always look forward for every new videos of yours. I only wanted to say one thing about your comments concerning the Marineford arc and that is that you have misread about what it was said about Blackbeard being able to obtain two Devil Fruits. It wasn't said that only very powerful people can have two Devil Fruits, what it really was said is that Blackbeard unlike everybody else in the world has a kind of a different body structure, "an irregular body" as it is translated in one of the One Piece Anime subs and that particular characteristic of his body is what allows him to have 2 Devil Fruits and that it is impossible for anyone else in the world to have more than one Devil Fruit. What's so different about his body compared to everyone else's is still a mystery to this day (well at least in the Anime, I don't know whether it was already revealed in the manga). I thought to tell you that because it is a very important plot point for the overall One Piece's story and for it's future events. Keep up the good work guys, you really are awesome!!!
Damn you guys are so tough jeezus coming from the "War of the Best!" and continue to do a podcast major props. Also some of my favorite moments from such a massive war arc are Luffy throwing Buggy into Mihawk as a shield lol Doffy making his speech within the middle of everything, Whitebeard forgiving Squard and continue to love all his sons and Blackbeard coming in wylin now owning two DFs plus Luffy completely breaking down was too sad.

There are ALOT of different catagories for the Zoan type besides the ones that aren't in the additional subclasses. Carnivorous Zoans turn you into predator animals with sharp claws and teeth, like Lucci's Cat Cat Leopard. Then, we saw Ancient Zoans which turn you into dinosaurs and other mostly extinct creatures, like Drake's fruit. And the mythicals are even more powerful, many with mystical properties, like Marco's fruit. Btw, Sengoku's fruit is a mythical Human Human of the Daibutsu variety. Yeah, Chopper's Human fruit is the ordinary, dollar store variety human while Sengoku gets his zen on.

At this point crocodile has helped luffy directly or indirectly more than he has harmed him. Marineford aside most of his past comrades are now strawhat allies. His right hand woman is now a straw hat. Mr 2 is luffy's best friend. There is mr 3 too who has become kinda on the same team

Discovered this channel a little while ago and I'd like to say that I really appreciate how much effort yall put into this, from the set to the costumes. I hope you achieve the success you deserve, and if not then I hope you have fun.
We still know absolutely nothing about it but I'm a firm believer that Kuma's backstory will be one of the saddest and most tragic in the entire story. He was probably aware of what would happen to him and actively chose to continue on whatever mission he had, knowing his downfall was imminent. I like to think his Bible is a sign of his strong faith in certain people to do good and carry on his peoples will.
To clarify the Zoan thing there are 3 different versions of zoan fruits.
Regular Zoan which is just a normal transformation. Examples are Chopper, Lucci, and Kaku.
Ancient Zoan are transformations to ancient creatures such as dinosaurs. Example would be Drake.
Mythical Zoan are transformations to mythical creatures or beings. Examples being Marco and Sengoku
There will obviously be more in the future but for now those are the Examples you should have for each type at this point in the series.

Volume One Algorithm Gang! Oh boi, always love seeing how mangas handle 'war' arcs and One Piece really nailed it in the coffin! Still on the binge, but cant wait to hear about the gigachad Whitebeared himself.
The reason I love this Arc is because it has some of the best action in the series, and some of the highest emotional moments in the series. When I was reading this in highschool I caught up in Amazon lilly and reading this chapter by chapter, week by week was mind blowing.

You guys mentioned speculation that Kuma might be somewhat aligned with the Revolutionaries in this video, so I just wanted to remind you guys in case you forgot, that Kuma actually mentioned Dragon's name at the end of Thriller Bark. Something like "His crew is very loyal. To be expected of your son, Dragon" or something along those lines
Great video. Minor Correction: Drake's t-rex devil fruit is an Ancient Zoan, not a Mythical. Ancient Zoans are rare, but Mythicals are the most rare of all devil fruits. Even rarer than Logias.
I wanna say now, you guys should watch Episode 0 now. Idk if other newcomers know about it but i feel its a neglected recommendation whenever they reach this point. It's a cool watch, think you guys should check it out. Just more insight on the history of things and characters up to where you read and it is canon of course.

Yes, Sengoku's fruit is a Mythical Zoan. It's the Human Human fruit model: Daibutsu.
Specifically a daibutsu is a giant statue of Buddha, so the fruit is of a statue, not actually a Buddha fruit.
Based on WB’s quote to BB about him not being the one Roger was waiting for and the conversation WB had with Shanks on his ship, Ace was to WB as Luffy was to Shanks. So WB was betting on Ace like Shanks was betting on Luffy to succeed Roger as King of the pirates. Also since WB was sick it’s subtlety implied he was going to Marineford to die. This all explains why WB was so desperate to save Ace, why WB took so much damage, why after seeing who the person Luffy was told his crew to help Luffy save Ace and finally why his last order to his crew was to at all costs protect Luffy after Ace died.

I could do an entire dissertation on why whitebeard forgiving squard is one of the best character moments of all time. If you guys haven't yet, I highly recommend watching the anime clip of that scene. They elongate it slightly and it really makes the moments impact that much more powerful.

The conversation between Ace and Garp in Impel Down was done masterfully and makes the reveal of Ace's father such a shock.
And then it is followed up by Luffy's nonchalant reveal of the news to the escapees which is so Luffy.
2:15:48 it does feel like Shanks was like "oh so we want to act like monsters, fine. Let's go!"
Almost like he would rather not bc he doesn't like fighting/killing but also has like a monstrous side.
I remember this week to week thinking the Straw Hats Pirates was going to show up resume Luffy and his brother but no and that hurt me more than Aces death. Also Whitebeard is my favorite one piece character right now. My favorite memory of this arc is narrator talking about Whitebeard and Kudo speech about the foolish Navy soldiers dieing for nothing I know that boy is future Fleet Commend of the Navy mark My words LOL. The Hito Hito no Mi or Human-Human, Model: Daibutsu is a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit that allows its user to transform into a Daibutsu (a giant gold Buddha) at will. It was eaten by Sengoku, the former fleet admiral of the Marines.
It has the same type of DF as Chopper, Human-Human but a different model (btw we don't know what model Chopper DF is).
I'm happy you didn't get Ace's death spoiled. When I started the series I already knew about it, so I enjoyed Marineford a little less since I was just waiting for it to happen. It's still a fantastic arc though like easily top 5.
I honestly don't think Akainu is inhuman, i think he has really strong beliefs that pirates are scum, probabily something fked up happened in his past related to pirates. He doesnt abuse power just to show himself or because he thinks he is above others, he just imposes his sense of justice in a brutal way. If he hadnt his position of power he would still hunt pirates in a diferent way because that's whats he believes is rigth.
He was probably pushed like crazy by his father as a child and he had to put off his own interests and morality for his father's ideals. Honestly... Luffy could've ended up like that if Garp raised him more directly. Pushing all of that unused passion into one outlet because you're not allowed any others and you eventually forget what you lost. I'm pretty sure that's how people become so authoritarian like that.
