I totally agree with all you guys that Hody Jones being a representation of generational racism works THEMATICALLY. But for the main villain of the arc to not have personal emotional stakes in his philosophy ended up feeling lackluster. I feel like Oda could've used someone other than the main villain to represent this theme

My theory on the Fishman Island 'hate' is that this is the point where a lot of people started becoming weekly readers so their experience drastically changed. This problem continues to plague the community for most new world arcs - where a lot of problems people have with arcs - are not/less problematic on a binge vs week to week.

I think the point if the steroid was: Borrowed hatred, borrowed power. The fact that will power is where you get strength in One Piece, i feel like its important that Hody wasn't actually strong and had to get steroids to compensate.

Also it's the very first arc after the timeskip. The protagonists should not be struggling immediately after training for 2 years. You got to build up to that stuff again, otherwise it won't have any meaning.

It's also an interesting dichotomy between overdosing on drugs only to help yourself which leads to your own destruction, and Luffy doping through Gear 2 to help others which leads to him winning even though it shaves years off his life.

People who spoil would be hated by Luffy, because he hates when people spoil others fun and take away the mystery of the adventure. Still, don't let it get to you, it will be fun regardless. I got spoiled of Aces death when I was just new to facebook and it was the most recent news or aniversary of his death. I hadn't even started the series at that point, but the whole feed was full of rip Ace or something similar. The feels still got to me at that part of the story.

Well now she's getting excited to reach Arabasta soon and I'm constantly feeling guilt for my play-by-play of Marineford; I not only spoiled Ace's death but the fakeout escape and Akainu's baiting tactics being the final nail in his coffin. Tom built it for Roger & he was the one who had the blueprints for Pluton before he passed it on to Iceberg (who would then pass it on to Franky). It would also be an understandable reason why the World Government wanted Tom to be executed for building the Oro Jackson.

If hody Jones was actually strong he would be a terrifying villain. The drugs he takes shows us that not only will he sacrifice his own men to achieve his goal but he will quite literally sacrifice the health of his own body. Truly one of the best depictions of a concentrated type of hatred that runs so deep it becomes cancerous to the person holding onto it.
That's why they say sometimes forgiveness is for yourself, not the person being forgiven.

Love seeing Merphy on again with you guys! Great discussion.
The energy steroids (and the arc in general) undoubtedly land better with the Japanese audience, as they pay homage to one of the most famous stories in Japanese folklore: Urashima Taro. Urashima Taro is a young fisherman who saves a turtle and as a reward is taken to an undersea palace. Urashima Taro spends three days there frolicking with the princess of the palace, Otohime, and when he returns to the surface he is given a box and instructed to never open it. But once he reaches the surface, he finds out that during his time under the sea, 300 years had passed on the surface. Wishing to find some way to return to the palace, he opens the box and turns into a decrepit old man: the box had contained all the years he would have aged.

I'm being holding back to defend Sanji, I feel character needs to be Explain in dept, ESPECIALLY Return to Sabody and Fishman Island arc.
Sanji wasnt always a simp. He was a gentlemen on his introduction in Baratie who loves to serve and entertain Beautiful Women like how a Host entertains in a Host cafe/Bar in Japan., And beside his All Blue Dream, he did Explain 98.3% of staying in the ship was becoz theres the pretty Nami on Merry ship back in Along park. However, as He travels with the crew from East Blue to Grandline, the more pretty Women he meets, the more simp he gets. This is probarly due to his entire teenage years spent in a Small Sea Restaurant called Baratie in East Blue. Grandline is huge, and he met a Beautiful Princess Name Vivi, and a Beautiful archaeologist Assasin join the crew. Serving 2 Beautiful women on Board, and appreciatinh Happiness saving them through his actions. Sanji's had a Full Life Fufill. Or so he thinks, till Nothing Happen. And Sabody. I dont know if you guys had a friend back in Highschool, where he just loves to hang out with pretty girls daily and serve them, like a love slave, like a gentlemen daily. One day he had a bad rumor spreading around him, and all rhe girls he loves to hangout suddenly ignore him for months. He was so depress, ot took him months to recover ans transfer another school. Thats a Sanji I saw in him lol. So Imagine Sanji's 2 years absent of a Beautiful Lady or Just ANY Lady for that Matter. He was having the love style of his life before Sabody, to serve prettt women like Robin/Nami. Then all was taken away in a second, and we got A Sanji with a worsen condition of his prior simp before more then ever. Yes Oda draw his joke panels a lot, even as a plot Amor. But does anyone understand what hes been through in 2 years his 2nd best dream taken away from him? You wont see any other strawhats having thier dreams as close to Sanji taken away, Maybe Luffy. But for me, having seen a classmate exp the same just in months not 2 years, I can understand where Sanji is coming from. Especially if a Man like his wish to spend his entire life dedicated to serving Beautiful Women. Nothing wrong in that.

As I've always understood it, the energy steroid werent for the arc and the theme, the steroids were for showing off the strawhats, for how much they have grown.
Even with overdosing on those pills they really weren't a match for the strawhats (Hody got some cheap shots in couse it was under water), so it just shows how strong they became over the 2 years without showing all the high end moves they have learned. (the standard trope of most shonen, train for move X.. Use move X to finish the next villain. Train for move Y.. Use move Y to finish the next villain. Etc etc etc.

Hello, finally caught up to this video! Listening to you guys has been a blast. I really enjoyed it. Fortunately, you enjoyed fishman island because it gets some unnecessary hate.
Also, I wish to correct you guys on one thing. Luffy recognizes strength but the trait he recognizes most is the heart - the strength of one's heart. You could be hella strong but Luffy won't care about you. He needs to connect with the person first. With Jinbei - it was through his values (when he wanted to stop Marineford from happening, with WB (it was with Ace, with Shushu, Laboon, Sherry and Toto (it was because of their loyalty).
Luffy is someone who cares the most about a person's heart. If the person shows weakness or shows lack of self-esteem, he'll hate them (like his first meeting with Coby and with Shirahoshi) because they devalue and demean themselves to the point where they can't stand up for what they believe. That's why when Coby stopd up against Alvida and when he said that he was gonna be okay despite a being threatened with a gun by Helmeppo, Luffy recognized his strength. The same way with Shirahoshi when he learned how much she sacrificed, how much she suffered and how far she will go for the people of Fishman Island, he told her "Sorry for calling you weak".
Luffy recognizes strength but he likes and respects the strength of ones heart most

I don't really understand how people think he has less diversity in his character than other strawhats.. I find that most reviewers who dislike the jokes end up just not talking about his scenes at all. I guess it would make sense that when you don't like a character, you tend to pay less attention to them.

Hody, fisher tiger and otohime shows three different ways to see people under oppression react. And usually when these types of things are tackled it's more otohimes or something similar to fisher tiger that is handled. To put that pure hatered in the center is a very cool way to tackle it. I found it really interesting

Post-timeskip One Piece is a very different kind of story in comparison to pre-timeskip One Piece. And by that I mean that the structure of the New World narrative changes to longer arcs that intertwine in a way that's even more intense than anything we saw back in Paradise.
But seeing as you are more so thematic than hype readers, you should be in for a ride! I'm happy to see you're enjoying the story so far, it's so clear how much this world has come to mean to you. Josh's passion for this is particularly so moving to me because it reminds me of how I felt when I first fell for One Piece, it was life changing.
Everything is connected and things starts coming together from this point onwards, so try to remember details that stand out to you. Chances are there's more to it than meets the eye at first sight! Oda is known for throwing curve balls at us lol.

As a non-manga guy who loves One Piece I have noticed about anime/manga fans is that how awesome or bad@$$ a character is weighs very heavily into how they perceive the quality. Like, awesome is confused with good. So I think a lot of Fishman hate is just because the villain isn't a cool bad@$$ character, which he is not, but the arc is great

I feel like Caribou’s whole purpose was just to show that Logia Devil Fruits aren’t shit now that everyone in the new world knows how to use Haki, just another way Oda hyped up the crews new strength. Feels like he’s spelling it out for the casual viewers. They introduce him as this scary/brutal Logia user who’s used to being invincible and then they flip it on it’s head and the straw hats are so far above him in power that he becomes a gag character. I especially love the scene with Pekoms later in the arc where he basically tells him straight up, welcome to the new world buddy, your fruit doesn’t mean shit out here! “Foolish Logia users who think themselves invincible don’t last long in the new world” something like that.

Fishman Island deals with racism and it's long lasting effects better than any piece of fiction I've ever read. The contrast between Otohime and Fisher Tiger was masterfully done.
This arc made me sympathize with Arlong. The panel of Arlong and his friends staring longingly at Sabaody Park from the water knowing even as kids that they weren't allowed to go was so damn powerful.
This is also the arc in which we get the second legendary weapon and more importantly the Joy Boy reveal. We also get to see the Straw Hats' upgraded power levels. And we get introduced to Big Mom who is another underrated villain.
Hody Jones was a fantastic villain. He was much more realistic in his motivations. Not every villain has to be a genius mastermind with fantastic powers. Some villains are just roided up sociopaths who crave violence.
The final scene with Jimbei giving his blood to Luffy in my opinion is one of the highlights in all of One Piece.

We know for a fact that Pluton isn't a person since both Alabasta and Water 7/Enies Lobby constantly referred to it as a battle ship, plus the fact that there was actual blueprints of how to build it. But Poseidon being a living person was a wild reveal, making it super damn hard to guess what Uranus might be!

  • @faustox77
    @faustox77 2 роки тому +1

The issue with Hody is that he is meant to be a "bad" villain. He is the result of what the queen was trying to prevent. He is just pure hatred. He was not a real threat to the strawhats, Luffy did not end him instantly because they were underwater. But he is meant to not have a real purpose other than what emerges of a cocoon of hatred and enhancing drugs to remain at the top with his crew over the people he ruled over. Had nothing to overcome other than the queens attempt to take away what had become the reason for his existance: hatred. And even that, he executed poorly and cowardly doing what he did and blaming someone else to prove more hatred. More than a villain he was a symbol of something that had to be taken care of with the most discriminated race in all one piece.
He is forgettable, but he is not meant to be remembered. Only what he represents.

41:20 1:12:40 I said this back when Merph reviewed Fishman Island herself, but I will say it here, too. Hody saying, after forcing the people to prove their loyalty to him, that he was going to kill them regardless if their names were on the papers, that's how a dictatorship blacklist works. You once said publicly that you were in favor of (insert thing future dictator opposes), there's a record somewhere, and when the dictatorship comes they go through those records, and you die or disappear in thin air because you are potentially dangerous to their regime. The closest the US has had to something like this was McCarthy, so I understand the reaction. But I'm South American, we've lived through that tens of times. And while I was born one year after the latest de facto government in my country (Argentina) ended, the ghost of it will never be fully lifted. I'm 38 now, but in my most political phase during highschool and college, around 20 years later and already in the XXI century, we used to prune or cover our faces if we saw the media around, because we feared we would end in a blacklist somewhere.
Now the strategy changed, instead of imposing a dictator by force to remove a leader they don't like, they use the media and propaganda, corrupted DAs and judges, and unless you know something they deem you shouldn't, it seems your life is not at risk, at least just for supporting a cause, or fighting against an injustice. But when I say "it seems" it's not for drama sake, it's because that's the feeling left in those my age and a bit older. Hopefully it's not how those younger than me feel, but I myself cannot be certain. And again, I was born one year after, so imagine how it is for those who had to live through it, throwing themselves to the floor if a car backfired thinking they were about to get shot, or having someone dear suddenly disappear and never hearing from them ever again. That's what Hody's words meant. That was his threat. A lifetime of fear of him finding out that they once said something he wouldn't approve, or what's even worse, of a neighbour who dislikes you because your dog once pooped on their frontyard calling him and lying about you being part of a movement against them

I am also one of the people who likes this arc a lot for what it is and is not bothered so much about it's villains being too weak and about the whole deal of Hody not having any reason to hate humans and any fishman who would try to be friendly with them. Although when I first watched it, I was kind of disappointed about Hody and his people being so weak because it was always mentioned back from Arlong Park Arc that fishmen in general were supposed to be 10 times stronger than the average human so I was really excited to see how strong they were going to be in the Fishman Island Arc, especially since the arc happened so late into the story and after Marineford but now after so many years, I am way past that. Since you've said almost everything that could be said about the arc's strenghts, I will only add that Fishman's Island Arc may have some of the best flashbacks backstories in the whole series and that those flashbacks were even better than anything that was happening during the arc in the present time

So when someone spoils I think they're trying to artificially create that. It's not a good thing to do and the outcome isn't what they are actually going to get, but maybe that's the mindset.

I've had that conversation about whether Hody or Vander Decken was a better antagonist. While I personally fall on Hody's side, the argument made for Vander Decken was pretty interesting. Basically some people felt like the stakes surrounding Vander Decken were much higher than with Hody. They understand that the culture/public opinion of the fishman and the outside world was at stake if hody managed to have his way...but fishman island itself was going to be destroyed if they didn't address Vander Decken.
I think it ultimately boils down to what parts of this arc people ending up preferring or finding more important.

Definitely most of the haters come from the anime watchers who are still adjusting to the change of pacing. It was pretty late for me, like I was already in Punk Hazard when I realized that the episodes are purposely dragged out. I liked everything so much more when I started reading the manga. That's when you realize how terrible the fillers they put in the episodes. One Piece in general don't deserve the hate for how TOEI handle its anime adaptation. I really enjoyed this and Merphy's review of this arc, ya'll proof that OP is much more enjoyable in the manga.

RE: Fish Steroids and the Tamate Box.
In isolation, I totally get the lackluster appeal of Hodie getting roided up to cause havoc. However, on rereads of the series I have noticed that several times have that this kind of thing has appeared several times in the story. Creepy Catfish dude wanted to use them to age up Shirahoshi, the drugs seem to concentrate life force in shorter installments at the cost of physical health (borrowing from your future vitality, metaphorically speaking). We saw this in Alabasta when the guards took their version of the Ancient Super Fighting potion, which ultimately killed the guards. Several other devil fruits we have seen (or will see, depending on where you are) kinda seem to fit together with these life-altering substances. It makes me wonder if a secret to immortality or super vitality is wrapped up in the Void Century and the Ancient Kingdom.
