Sentomaru being long winded is actually part of his character gag. When we first meet him he says something like "I'm Sentomaru, the most tight lipped man in the world, I won't tell you anything, not even my name!" That and he's also reporting back to base so it's not necessarily for the audience's benefit but for all the dumb marines who seem to underestimate the Straw Hats EVERY SINGLE TIME haha.
I think as a black One Piece fan Oda really did a great job of encompassing both sides of a really long and hatefilled struggle for equality. I love it. I personally have had family members unalived by law enforcement so that is something I am staunchly against. With that being said someone reading this might be law enforcement or be married to or friends with them. We are all still human regardless of how we choose to support or fight for certain issues. I think One Piece goes out of it’s way to show grace to both sides that can be difficult to do in real life. Oda is a master of his craft. 10/10 🏴☠️

Hody is one of the best antagonists, not in fighting strenght etc. but in the message he represents
Hody is the embodiment of conditioned hatred, wich is still very prevalent in this world (especially in America), where children are tought by previous generations to hate someone just becouse they are or look different.
I love Fishman Island for the message it brings and that Oda isn't afraid to put real world problems in his 'goofy' story.

Luffy dissing Shirahoshi is reminiscent of how he treated Coby at the very beginning - he straight up called him clumsy, dumb, gutless and "worthless".
Zoro getting on the wrong ship to go fishing reminds me of how Koby accidentally got on Alvida's ship because he wanted to go fishing. The beginning of Romance Dawn VS. The beginning of The New World!!!

Fish man island is great. There's always a vocal minority saying X arc is bad. 9/10 times they're complaining about the anime. Of course Oda wants to show the Straw Hats powered up after the time skip, but the plot remains top tier.
Edit: Mehgan totally called Luffy being immune to poison in Impel Down. He's not completely immune though but his resistance to poison had increased dramatically.
In particular for me I find it to be one the most thematically rich arcs. With the exploration of discrimination being one of the most nuanced that I've read in manga.
Or they are complaining about the pacing in the manga cos of weekly reader syndrome.
Fishman was a great arc. I just didn't like the fishman repeating "They can't even breathe underwater They don't deserve to live" one too many times in the arc. my only nitpick
My only issue with Fishman Island is the main antagonist being kinda one note and pretty much everything involving Sanji. Other than that, this arc is one of the best explorations of prejudice, bigotry, and racism I've seen in manga.

I actually found Fishman Island Arc to be one of my top faves, it’s hits close to home for me in terms of what they themes they were talking about are. I think the amount of people complaining about it were really the ones not looking for substance just “cool fights” which arguably One Piece isn’t technically about. It’s very theme heavy and world building on its story telling. There are cool fights of course, but when it comes down to it themes are the most important. To me this one just spoke on topics that usually I don’t hear spoken on a lot about, especially at that time period when it came out. People tend to brush a subject as tough as this as some sort of “political issue” or try to ignore it, when it’s really a human issue. Racism seen in this arc really showcased it a lot on how awful it is, and how it can continue to live on. You both got it right when you said it’s for sure taught and that an effort needs to be made to stop it. That’s why I continue to appreciate Otohime for her efforts. And why I like Jinbei and Fisher Tiger so much too.
It was great to get to the time skip and see how strong everyone had gotten. It was great seeing Zoro vs Hody. In terms of being a threat to the strawhats Hody is underwhelming but thematically he is a great antagonist because he shows what generational hatred looks like.
Dont worry about the outfits. They change a lot! even in the same arcs

It's never specifically stated where Arlong currently is but it's assumed he is in prison. There was the cover serial where Hachi escaped from the marines prison ship but he was the only one. So it's assumed that all the rest of the Arlong pirates were taken away on that ship and taken to prison.
My personal theory is that he was taken as a slave by the celestial dragons since they like fishman slaves because they are physically strong, and eventually Arlong will be rescued/freed by a character we meet later in the Dressrosa arc because it would be extremely poetic. Ill go into that more when you guys eventually get to that point.
As for Fishman island in general, I like it. I would give it a high B low A rank. The major thing that detracts from it( at the point you guys are at) is mostly the Sanji stuff, Later on in the 2nd part there are some issues I have with the Villains and there are some pacing issues with the fights which keep it from being one of the truly best arcs, but I'll get into that next week when you guys finish the arc. The anime definitely did portions of this arc a disserve so its understandable why so many think its not great.
But there is one more thing I think also might be a factor, I think people had SUPER HIGH expectations for this arc, after Water 7 we were told the next destination was fishman island... but that clearly didn't happen, we expected the florian triangle to be some quick shenanigans at sea which turned into the excursion that was Thriller bark and we thought Sabaody was going to be a quick pitstop to get the ship coated but instead evolved into a chain of the most epic story arcs ever told in any fantasy series ever... So years later when we got to fishman island and it turned out to be a "really fucking good" arc instead of "VHUYVGFBN IBASFIUASND ASDU OMZGERB BEST ARC EVER" arc people negatively over reacted. But who knows, that's just my opinion.

I absolutely love Return to Sabaody, it’s one of those arcs I can watch/read and never get tired of. I also love what the anime did with swapping around the Strawhat VAs for the imposters(sus). But you hit it right on the head Josh. Although the villains are pretty lackluster, what Oda does with world building and lore drops in this arc are amazing, and the second half just gets deeper. Almost to 64,000 leagues deep.
A little correction: Arlong does actually care about his people. He stands up for fishmen, but in an agressive and opressive way towards other races. Hody on the other hand does not stand up for fishmen, he's all about revenge and even kills his own people for that. In a way, Arlong is the extreme and Hody the radical evolution of their ideals
Thematically, this might be Odas best arc yet. Fishman island, skypeia and thriller bark are the underrated trio of one piece arcs.
In the English dub, Rayleigh said “Before then, I never believed much in fate, but maybe, nothing really happens by accident, we’re too blind too see all the signs; anyway, that hat found the right man, so long as it sails, I’ll stay here waiting, because I want to see a new king before I die.”

I’ve been missing these so muchhhh, I’ve been listening my to these as podcasts while at work but I’m off for a week so I finally get to watch it :)))
One of my favorite theories from that era about what happened to Arlong is that he’s in Marie Jois as a slave. That’s why we didn’t see him in Impel Down even though Hachi mentions that Arlong didn’t escape in the original Saobody. Surely if someone as small fry as Buggy (at the time) was in Impel Down then Arlong would have been considered a big enough threat to place him there. You could say he was executed, but I mean, come on, this is Oda we’re talking about. He rarely kills characters, never mind off-screening one of his best villains. It would also be a huge punch in the gut narratively speaking, knowing how much Arlong hates humans because of what happened with Fisher Tiger.
Hell yeah!! I first started watching these as background filler but slowly as I started listening over time these have become so entertaining and I genuinely look forward to these! I love these and can tell how much you guys are putting into this and I just wanted to share my appreciation! Respect your opinion, but up to this point (up to Fishman Island) I feel that Sanji has been one of the Strawhats with the most dimensions and versatility with how Oda uses him. I feel like a lot of reviewers do not see this because they've come to dislike his jokes, therefore don't pay as much attention to his panel time or moments.

Sanji is a character of extremes. He is probably the smartest together with Robin, but also the most restricted by his shortcomings. He is always on the edge between greatness and absolute stupidity. To some people it is just too much. I love Sanji, but sometimes I just want him to be the cool guy, not the heart-eyed hurricane even when enemies are present. Usopp and Nami often overcome their fear when in need, Sanji kind of always falls prey to women the same way. But he does have awesome moments.
@@rhuanv I agree that he is a character of extremes (extremely kind, extremely goofy, extremely cool) and he also makes extreme decisions (not using his hands to fight, not kicking a woman, feeding even the worst people) but there are also a ton of subtleties hidden behind the pervy or chivalrous sides of him. I also really enjoy that Oda made Sanji have the extremely goofy/ridiculous side to him because if he was just a cool white knight character I think he would be too predictable. Him twirling around and having a nose bleed is genuinely always funny to me because I treat it as a three stooges type of ridiculous gag that is funny coming from a character that can be so cool and collected. Idk, I just wouldn’t like him as much without his extreme jokes because they make it so when he has a serious moment after them, it hits even harder. I also feel that his lust acts like an actual uncontrollable urge within him that he genuinely tries to control in serious situations (khalifa, black maria, wci). But this is all just my opinion, if you don’t like the humor or are offended by it, thats fine.
It’s a failure of the story if a joke with a character prevents readers from enjoying that character’s cool moments.

The last we see of Arlong he was knocked unconscious in the rubble of Arlong Park. We don't see him again. In Sabaody, Hachi tells us that Arlong and everyone else was captured by the Marines, (presumably by Captain Nezumi) and that only Hachi managed to escape.
Volume One Algorithm gang! Seeing the StrawHats after the 2 timeskip always puts a proud smile on my face, a feeling of "look how far you have come from your start".
In my head canon. I think nami never had a chance to branch out and explore her style before joining the strawhats because she was always masquerading as ruffian when infiltrating pirate groups she would steal from so now that it's 2 years later she's had the time and freedom to finally be more girly and be a bit sexy :P

Arlong, Chu, Kuroobi, Hachi and the other fishman were rounded up by Nezumi (shitty mouse marine) after being defeated at Arlong Park. Hachi escaped the prison ship alone, which led to his cover story. Presumably they were just put in a marine prison (not Impel down)
Which is pretty odd considering Arlong was placed in Impel Down after Kizaru captured him the first time, right? What happened that made Arlong be not even considered for Impel Down this time?

Arlong got taken by the marines and put in a prision in the east blue iirc, thats why u dont see him in impel down, hachi "told us " that he got taken along with his buddys, hachhi was able to escape, and dip to fishman island, the cover story cover lol that part.
How can ppl say Fishman island is a Bad Arc when Oda Drew this the First New world Island with the Awsome visonary of the underwater Island since Ennies Lobby/SkyPiea and the Most Fulflling Backstory of not 1, but 2 Awsome Backstories from the New world. You cannot separate Fishman island Arc with the Backstories. The Backstories, Hody, past and present as a whole is the entire of Fishman Island Arc.

It's so satisfying to get the crew back together again. I think Usopp has the biggest glow-up in the re design, but Zoro also looks dope AF, and I do prefer Luffy with sleeves for some reason. I agree with Meghan that the journey down to Fish-Man Island was very reminiscent of the journey to Skypeia. Love an adventure! Great ep, guys!

The marine guy with the long hair is Vice Admiral Strawberry. He was first seen in Enies Lobby, he was one of the 5 Vice Admirals that were summoned with the buster Call. He later had a minor appearance during Marineford. You probably don't remember him because he now has a long hat to go with his long hair. Also if I remember correctly Oda said that it's not his hair that is long it's his head.

Just like Skypea this arc is not one of my favorites but I like it. It's a buildup arc with a lot of lore and pieces of information.
Luffy's outfit after the timeskip is Boa Hancock's redesigned robe. (From the scene when she got love fever.) The same color in the anime. Same sleeve design and yellow belt.Also, in her return to Sabaody, she gives him her coat... the one she wore when she took Luffy to the Marine ship to get him into Impeldown (the one he was hiding under.)
Fishman Island is great because it's about fighting ideology more than fighting an intimidating big bad. Some people think it's one of the weaker sagas, but I don't think many would deny that even the weakest parts of One Piece are great

Like caring and willing to sacrifice himself for any other Strawhat even if it is Zoro, making plans to help and you also mistaking the not hitting a woman as a part of pervert characterizations , looking for the worst thing in his character and saying that's Sanji is wrong, Sanji is also that guy who is searching for what's good in people around him and believes in them and you do him the other way around
Right, but his pervert part was was way in the forefront for this first part of post time-skip. It kinda soiled his character for me until WCI
I think it's easy to miss that Chopper doesn't wear literally two hats, but just an additional blue part on top of the old one. The pink parts, like the cross in the front and the cap are part of the old hat!
When I was reading all the Fishman Merman breeding stuff I just took it like; Oda is explaining this because he wants to continue drawing whatever he feels like. Also funny that there were so many animal people early on in One Piece and then later he came up with the idea of Zoan-types. Pretty sure it was similar with the Fishmen, he just added a bunch of stuff on later so he could draw whatever he wanted.
Their analysis of the flashback makes me excited for them to get to Reverie

I want to give a LOT of praise to Nami. From what we know of her backstory with Arlong and the rest of his fishman crew, we NEED to applaud her for not holding a grudge against the whole fishman race. She is Oda’s example of ending the cycle. We see that with Arlong and Hordy that because of what a human has done to them, they want to take revenge in their own hands by making humans suffer. Nami and Otohime want to break the cycle of that division between the races and we have to applaud their maturity and hopefulness.
Not sure if you caught that Boa Hancock and her sisters were among the slaves freed by Fisher Tiger. He was also mentioned in Amazon Lily. I love Otohime and Fisher Tiger's flashbacks in the anime! :)
Loved how y'all brought up that Arlong's history with the sun pirates and fisher tiger doesn't push us to think that Arlong is right. It just provides amazing context for arlong as a character and the role of Fishman in society. Wild how Oda makes us appreciate characters we haven't seen or heard of in years.
Once Robin finds the key to the 100 year void, she must find the door to the 100 year void.

What the hell? There are people downplaying Fishman island arc for real??? This arc had me tight in its grip especially with the flashback and I can't wait to read more like that was such intense thoughtful nuanced amazing shit that I was tearing up and shook. Haven't felt this high in a while as I've been reading one piece and this arc had me hooked back in again! I honestly wasn't that enthusiastic starting up again but if post-time skip is already this good then I can't wait to see what else is in store. Scared that this will be a high that can't be reached but I'm anticipating reading the rest now. Really agree with so much of your feelings!

I love Fishman island personally, lots of set up for later things. Think most people dont enjoy it because it can be kind of slow in places but i always thought it was one of the deeper arcs thematically (pun fully intended) in regards to the issue of racism, it being passed down through generations and how complex of an issue it can be. Gonna go back and re-read it after watching this, you talk about a couple things i had forgotton which could be interesitng for theory crafting. Glad to see Done Piece is back!
