We’ve heard of the three types back in drum island. Choppers doctor dad told chopper pirates “ have body’s like stone, eyes like eagles, and voices to color the heavens”.
That line was an anime-only addition iirc (but it's still really cool!)

1:16:20 In Enies Lobby after Spandam’s speech and before telling Sogeking to shoot the flag Luffy says “I understand Robin’s enemies very well” in reference to the world government. I’ve always imagined he was remembering what Dadan said and what happened to Sabo.
It's kinda odd how Ace gets more posthumous development than he did while he was alive, but it actually works really well imo. it puts the focus and emotional weight of the Marineford saga for a first-time reader entirely on Luffy and his struggle to save his brother.
Then when you reread it with a better understanding of Ace as a character, it just _hits different_
Ace was captain of Spade Pirates before he joined WB. You should read Ace backstory/sidestory.

Might be worthwhile to wait until after like.. chapter 1007ish given some of the things that are spoiled by that backstory.
@@kevinb5417 yes there are some minor spoilers but nothing important, in my opinion, the story can be read without worries (and without context, they will only find out some things about the yonkous but nothing big).

It always amazes me how one piece take 500+ chapters to get to its main characters backstory. And it still fits with everything we learned about the character up to this point.
There's this one funny comment I saw somewhere about Kuma sending Perona to Mihawk's island. Along the lines of
"Oh girl you're working for the far inferior vampire-themed warlord" and then just shoots her over to Mihawk's island like a work email.
And another one that was
"Kuma hears Perona's vacation ideal and thinks 'Oh Mihawk's gonna find this so freaking funny.'"

58:30 yeah Ace got his DF after setting sail on his journey. Remember Luffy was surprised he got one when they met at Alabasta and commented how he could never beat him when Ace WAS fruitless. Also, the Ace light novels about before he joined WB and was rocking with his own crew the Spade Pirates showcases exactly how he found and ate it.
Don't the light novels have some spoilers that should be avoided for a good while?

E.g, isn't Advanced Conqueror's Haki shown? That's a pretty huge deal. We don't see that definitively explained until well into Wano.

I found you guys through the Tekking episode and I'm in love. I love watching & Rexpirecnceing OP through new readers . I love the enegery you guys have and the Puns/Jokes. You guys do it right, I look fwd watching all your OP videos and even other videos now because of yalls personality.
Only about 9 months have passed between Luffy leaving his island and the start of the time skip. It's a crazy short amount of time considering how much the crew has been through and how they will be apart for 2 years!
“I’m not that smart, so I don’t know who or what killed Sabo. But whatever it was, it was definitely the opposite of freedom. Sabo died without being able to grasp freedom.”
I think about this quote a lot with One Piece. I think Ace’s speech really impacted Luffy’s idea of freedom.
I’ve always thought getting the X on your left arm from the end of the Alabasta arc that means you’re a part of the crew would be a cool low key One Piece tattoo.

This episode gave me crazy nostalgia for back when I was reading week-to-week at this point in the series, genuinely not knowing where the story would go.
Fun fact after the 3D2Y chapter which ends on Luffy putting the strawhat on the rock & announcing 'strawhat Luffy is going on vacation'.
Oda himself went on vacation with his family to Hawaii & the series was on break for 4 weeks.
This made the passage of time feel so real cause the entire fandom was waiting in anticipation & it really helped bring the 2 year timeskip to life - that first chapter after with all the new designs was crazy.

Another amazing episode! When I read through this arc, when Luffy says he still has his crew, that hit me in the FEELS so hard!
Also re: anime/manga scene comparisons, one of my fav underrated scenes in both (but especially the anime) is when Luffy sets out to sail & encounters the Lord of the coast who took shanks' arm & says 'let me show you the punch I've been practicing for 10 years'. After everything shown in both flashbacks this scene just hits me hard for some reason
Ya'll posted this on Luffy's birthday, May 5th, which is also Children's Day in Japan, and where you dived in to Luffy's childhood. Your timing is impeccable.
Something that i just love is the fact that HAKI can be translated as "Will" or "ambition". And logia types are called "power of the elements", meaning tha You can defet the elements with your Will, and that your ambition is the power to defet the Nature in self.
a break from reviews for a discussion/recap episode sounds perfect! I would honestly really prefer for you guys to do that before jumping into post timeskip and reviewing again.
Please take however long of a break you need. The consistency and quality of these has been so great that I'd be more than happy to wait.
You guys at the beginning of these episodes are all of us talking about One Piece. We can plan and lay out these discussions all we want, but in the end reminiscing about one moment causes a tangent to another moment in an endless chain reaction, and the plan is thrown out the window. We're high on One Piece!

About Ace's tattoo: When I was reading along with you guys, I believe we saw that Ace misspelled his name as Ase when he was a kid. I guess when he got his tattoo he started it as Ase and then the tattoo artist was like, "Oh, but Ace is spelled A.C.E." so he he just Xed out the S?
I'm almost positive the crossed-out S was intentional as an homage to Sabo, because in the "what if" cover page with ASL grown up together his tattoo just says "ACE"
@@isopodshuffle If Oda has said that somewhere, sure. I took it as a joke that Ace spelled his name wrong. Also, we first saw Ace and his tattoo at the end of Alabasta, I don't really think Oda had even invented Sabo at that point. That's just my opinion, though.

The crossed out S was also how sabo signed the letter he gave to Ace and Luffy, not hating on your idea but it does seem to be because of Sabo
One piece chapter 596 Cover shows sabo alive and the “$” gone from “A$CE”. This might confirm that’s the “$” is to match Sabo’s flag. Also just as an example 3D2Y was crossed out and it wasn’t a mistake.
I can't say if it was planned but Luffy's line in Enies Lobby about knowing very well who Robin's enemy was gets even better for me after this flashback with Sabo and Dadan's talk.
Congrats on 10K and reaching the halfway point of OP! You guys should react/discuss the anime openings (up to opening 14). Not only are they straight bangers but it can be an emotional ride to see how far the series has come
I don't really know how to describe it, but oh man I feel so strongly connected to the straw hats it's actually insane. Like how you mentioned at the beginning Josh, Luffy till now has been helping his crewmates and has been savings their hearts throughout the story. And now with Luffy at his lowest point, his heart needs to be saved and I so so so much love that his crew is now willing to put everything to the side (Zoro his pride, Usopp his fear, Sanji his current problems on the island etc etc) just to help Luffy out.
It's like a " Thank You" from his crew, cause he helped them all out and now It's their turn to help him out and make Luffy King of the Pirates!

The X'd out S is Sabos Pirate flag
Only Oda would do it in this order. To give you the backstory after so long of knowing Luffy. It makes you mourn the loss of Ace twice and in different ways. The confidence in Oda's writing to wait so long for so many payoffs in this story.
Edit: Case in point they literally just called back to that scene where Luffy said what he wants but they didn't show it you just see Sabo and Ace's reaction on the last episode 1015 which I'm sure you've heard by now some consider to be the best episode of One Piece ever. Some say in all of anime.
Yeah, during the flashback, Luffy had his fruit (he ate it before he got the hat), but Ace did not (Alabasta was the first time Luffy saw him with a fruit, he specifically mentioned as such).
When Ace got it is explained in One Piece Novel A, a novel covering some of his own early adventures before joining the Whitebeard Pirates.
The theory with the cutaway is that Luffy shouted his true dream. Notice every time he says "I'm going to become king of the pirates" not "my dream is to become king of the pirates". It's theorized that being kotp is just a means to an end and his true dream is still a mystery.
This isn't even a theory at this point in the story so much as it's an abject fact. Ace tells Luffy during his death that he laments the he won't be able to see "the goal at the end" of Luffy's dream. Luffy intends to be the Pirate King, so it goes without saying that the goal at the end of that dream is something else. People have been talking about this since Marineford was being published weekly.
I haven’t seen the episode completely yet but Ace’s tattoo *A.S.C.E* the crossed out S is supposed to represent Sabo. You can see it in Sabo’s letter’s corners
The thing with Ace tattoo of Asce, the S is not crossed out cause of a weird way of paying respect, but rather Sabo Flag which was an S with a cross bone X
Honestly even if it was intended to pay respects I don't think it's that weird. It's acknowledging that Sabo was a part of him but now he's gone idk, I kinda liked that interpretation and never thought it was all that strange?

Not gonna lie the best part was Luffy realizing that despite being separated from his crew and the death of Ace, what he had left was his crew.

Another reason for the S being crossed out is that the crossed out S was what Sabo used as a jolly roger, he also signed the letter he sent with the crossed out S, so it's possible that Oda never even intended for it to represent that he died, even though pretty much everyone interprets it that way
I'm glad you all are taking a week off. It is a good thing to reflect on the end of an epic era, and on what the next era will become. Oda took 4 weeks off releasing chapters at this point, and it was a wild time for fans to not know even through teasers. All we had were theories in that month of reverence.
And speaking of weekly theories, every silhouette in the post-time-skip manga was automatically Sabo to the fans for way too long!

It was a one-off prequel Oda did for the Strong World film, but unlike the movie that chapter is actually canon (also SW is really good and totally worth watching)

A little fun fact, the settings that Oda drawn are based on actual places. the Gray Terminal Of Dawn Island is the Smokey Mountains of the Philippines, Alabasta is Egypt, Water 7 is Venice in Italy, etc.. I like that Oda specifically mimic our world and create his own take and add his own interpretation of the place to create one piece. its like when we read one piece, you're actually going places around the world lol

This arc was really well done, I’m glad you guys got up to this point. Jimbei is such an amazing character, it makes me wonder how well thought out he was going to be when Oda first mentioned him back in East Blue before they went to Arlong Park.
Interesting things to check out for this, I would watch the anime opening for this arc, it’s really well done and such a good song. Also if you listen to Sabo’s voice in the anime, you’ll notice that it’s actually Naruto’s voice actress.
The S cross was the symbol of Sabo, in the letter that Sabo send to Ace (that arrive after he “die” ) has his Symbol it’s super small but it’s there. That’s why he tattoo that way.
Hey guys, great reaction and review as always. It’s nice to see Mehgan come around to Luffy’s character, except her original opinion of Luffy was quite odd. A normal person who hasn’t seen many shonen wouldn’t understand why Luffy is the main character of such a grand story whereas the side characters who literally represent relatability and hardship and realism are much more interesting to her than Luffy based solely because she understands them
Even after Luffy is explained she still doesn’t understand him. Luffy is similar to many popular shonen protagonist, they’re joyful and dumb like you’re watching a one dimensional cartoon character who always causes immature problems. The world and other characters in One piece serve to be the foil to the MC as the goofy protagonist constantly battle their ideas and logic with childhood innocence. Luffy’s character is hard to understand unless you’ve watched many shonen protagonist similar to him. But that’s not all…
Even with this logic, Luffy wouldn’t be an interesting protagonist as a trope copy. What People love about Luffy is that he isn’t a copy since chapter 1. At times he acts like a goofy child as you’d expect from the trope, but sometimes he’s rough and blunt with people, children, woman, and speaks as if he’s as mature as a wise man in his 40’s in a way you’d never expect
His goofy character and copy of the trope always keeps you on your toes because he flips a switch, he gets super serious and speaks FACTS, which shrouds his beliefs and where he learned them in mystery. The play on the goofy goody kid trope and super maturity, and yet free spirit with grounded thoughts who saves anyone at any cost is what makes Luffy a great character. The traits on Luffy is usually only seen on goofy kid characters after many many experiences, but here you see it from the start.
Don’t need to read this part:
(What I’m basically saying is that Luffy is similar to Isekai, you like fantasy Isekai but it’s always a carbon copy from a previous Isekai, you watch so many that you get bored and the plot becomes outrageous and predictable but the story built around that trope is always fun. But one day someone flips those expectations on your head, and makes a deep, dark, serious and unexpected story out of a predictable boring but fun trope. That’s Luffy, he’s half: the old goofy kid shonen trope many enjoy. And he’s half: the modern shonen trope where everything is different, serious, deep, and mature. If the trope is fresh to you then the appeal may not be there)
To the Star Wars part: just imagine midichlorians like mitochondrias. Every living thing (very generelized) has them, and the more powerhouses of the cell... eh I mean force you have, the more powerfull a jedi/sith/whatevs you can become. So yes the force is in all of us, just not equaly spread
After this Arc ended Oda took a one month break too mimic the time skip, and it was the longest month of my life.

Don't feel like you have to fit 80+ chapter arcs into one podcast episode when working your way through them.

I'm so conflicted... because while im extremely interested in chill episodes talking about things like favorite characters, arcs etc. i really just want you guys to continue the story and catch up asap XD
if you remember the scene of Zoro vs Mr. 1 in the ability to sense presence in things, and also his ability to tell apart the cursed blade without being told, is pretty sure the predecessor concepts to Mantra or Haki, which then he honed it in sort of from Skypeia and then much later introducing Haki in its entirety.
When I was younger and I first read this Arc week to week I was so disappointed because I didn't appreciate the story and I just wanted action. Growing up I've learned to appreciate this story, not only does this show you Luffy's history but it also hints to his future.
I was week to week as of Sabaody and I specifically remember people complaining about this arc. Everyone expected Shonen tropes because of Bleach and Naruto. Not much has changed oddly enough.
Suggestion on what to do for a video before you come back from the time skip is to go through some of the foreshadowing that has been paid off and where the seed was planted. Also good time to theorize if you've noticed anything that you expect to be foreshadowing and keep a checklist to see if it ever does come back up.

The thing about Black Beard is that he’s what a pirate is supposed to be. He’s evil, sneaky and doesn’t play by the established rules. Luffy and Whitebeard, etc are the outliers. Most people in the One Piece world deal with Black Beards regularly.

I just wanted to point out that Kuma mentions Dragon after the nothing happens scene on Thriller Bark. He says something to the effect of “he’s got loyal crew mates, I’d expect nothing less from your son, Dragon.” I also like to point out how broken of a combo Iva and Kuma together would be. You could get injections from Iva to keep fighting while Kuma periodically expels the strain and pain it would put on your body. Talk about OP, I can’t wait to really learn about Dragon and what he’s about.

I like to believe that the crossed S on Ace's tattoo is more of a direct reference to the flag Sabo rises when he departs to sea rather than a way of saying "he ded now :/".
Aside from that, Post-Marineford has always been one of my go to arcs when feeling down or needing some perspective; it's brimming with emotion and nostalgia yet also with hope for the future. It truly is a perfect epilogue to the first half of the series in my opinion.

So friggin HYPE for you guys to finally be in the New World with us!! Banger moments and can think of at least 10 great cosplays for both of you. Really exciting.
Agree w the others who would like a retrospective eppy. Between where you are and the latest chapter theres no other time that would make sense to do it except now. Esp if it could mean updated Done-Piece art ☠️. I was thinkin itd be cool seeing the V1 Jolly Rancher on either side of the V1 sign? Would be centered w the new camera angles and could help move merch.
Did you guys notice on the close up of the straw hat, there are three visible slashes on the top part? It's the same damage Buggy did way back in Orange Town. It doesn't matter at all to the plot but it's still baffling to see Oda's attention to detail like that.
Also, those 3 marks appear on Luffy figures as well. Not on every Luffy figure but I appreciate the ones that do have it.

I like to think that the crossed out S on Ace's tattoo is Sabo's Jolly Roger.
Also, something to note here, when Marco and Vista attacked Akainu with haki to defend Luffy, the attacks seem to go thorugh Akainu and he just seemed annoyed. A similar thing occured when Whitebeard stabbed Aokiji. Just something to think about.
The next arc, Return to Sabaody, it’s my favorite arc. For me the comedy is top tier for One Piece and the hype for the reunion is through the roof. I also implore you guys to watch the anime episodes for this arc. Because there are some imposter and some VAs get swapped around and I think it would be interesting for you guys to guess who is voicing who and reveal your guesses during the next review and confirm them.
You can also read the Ace novel if you're interested. It has been illustrated by Boichi (author of Dr. Stone)
Just an idea, you guys can talk about sagas on a reread video, we would love two or three videos as a reread. It is normal to reach the time skip and go back and read again. This era is an era of smiles.

One of my favorite things about this arc is we finally find out why Luffy hates cowards and cry babies.... its because Ace told him that he hates people like that and he changed himself to be the opposite of those things.
PS: Croco mom theory fits a little too well to be ignored. Its possible Crocodile was just extremely frustrated and taking it out on the Navy... but he REALLY had no reason to save Luffy and Jimbei and then to say "you need to protect those you want to protect".
Please tell me you realize that it's a joke theory.

Also Oda said that Luffy's mom didn't appear in the story yet and he is not even sure if she ever will or is even alive.

I think Kuma is still considered a Warlord
as one piece fans, a longer video is really not a problem for us lol. i mean, we read/watch one piece ffs hahaha 😂 i'm also getting a couple one piece tattoos soon, like the famous "X" on my forearm and a more recent iconic scene! i feel like i say this every time but this is also one of my favorite arcs, i really love luffy so much and learning more about him really made me love and appreciate him more and more.

I tend to be not that emotional. Pretty stoic. But whenever I see those emotional moments in one piece I start shedding tears.
