@How to Train Your Gavin no it was great lol. I am currently in drum island with my mom, and I show her some of your reactions to convince her that it gets really really good later. That line was one of them 😂
In the wise words of one Doctor Hiriluk, "A man only dies when he's forgotten." Ace and Pops' time in the series was short, but by no means are they dead in our hearts.
Hey guys, it's me! Buggy the legend! Coming at you live from Marineford! Smash that like button and shoutout to my crew the Buggy Pirates! Wish you were here!
There's a twisted part of my brain like the evil Kermit meme that's telling me to pretend he's still alive, and the urge to believe him is strong, cause maybe it WAS a metaphor
What I find so funny about this too is, a metaphor for what? It doesn't even make any sense lmfao T_T I think I remember reading the part of Marine Ford after Ace's death in a daze. It's just so fitting that Luffy is unable to do anything during that part of the arc
When you kept saying "he is not dead, we saved him", I wanted to tell you that I think we DID save him. he lived unsure of his worth, and he was reassured in the end. his soul was saved
@@GavinReadsItAll There's such a difference between dying chained up and dying on your feet, by your own choices, and for something you love. They did save him. They gave him his freedom back.
"Thank you for loving me" is one of the most soul destroying, gut wrenching, tear inducing lines that I've heard. Just thinking about it makes me cry like a baby. Ace is/was my favourite character too 😭
It's always important to mention that the Marines are Garp's found-family. This wasn't a decision between job and family for Garp, it was a decision between family and family. He was raised, trained, and has lived around marines, he is the instructor of most of the current marines in this fight and Fleet Admiral Sengoku is basically Garp's found-brother, you could even imagine that Garp has been present in many marine weddings of his brothers in arms and has also been at many funerals and met the family of many of his students who died at the hands of pirates. Since we only have Luffy's partial perspective in the series, and we as readers don't tend to care about marines lives in the story, it is very difficult to view things from a different angle. RIP Gol D. Ace, we will never forget you.
Garp's conflict is so interesting, he has resigned himself to the fact he can't save Ace, and he tries to be strong, to be the symbol, the hero the marines need in the fight, but the moment he is face to face with his grandson, he cannot bare to raise his hand. Garp taking that punch, taking that fall was his way of contributing to Ace's rescue as best he could. Ace is freed, everyone has the hope of his survival rekindled, Garp especially. And then Sakazuki snuffs it out... to have him be executed in what he sees as an impossible situation was one thing, but to have him not just be killed after finally being freed, but be killed right in front of Luffy... had Sengoku not held back Garp I'm not sure there would be a Marineford left
Also, Sakazuki (Akainu's name) means the same sake oath that luffy and ace took as a sign of brotherhood. So his oath to luffy killed him- he could not watch him die. I just find that to be a beautiful piece of word play
is it absurd though? I mean, it's really only funny because we know how we ourselves were at that point, so I would rather call it cathartic. (and I get teary eyed thnking about emotional One Piece scenes, and instantly tear up if I just see a 5s clip of the anime of the moments, and will bawl when I completely reread or rewatch them)
Man, everytime you thirsted for Ace a part of me was hurt because I knew this was eventually coming. 😥 But man, this arc is soooo good, man. Whitebeard went like a fucking boss and is still remembered by the fandom as the boss he was.
Wow you really edited in your past reactions for *extra* emotional damage. I respect it. In all seriousness, this and Impel Down were the arcs that made me rank OP as one of my favorite stories of all time, but it definitely came at the cost of all the tears I carried in my eye sockets. I'm really glad you could experience it un-spoiled, and I'm sending all of the virtual hugs possible.
Fun fact! Oda was expecting his first child while writing this arc so a lot of the themes of Fatherhood in Marineford were him voicing his own concerns and anxieties
Trust me when I say this most of us have been absolutely looking forward to watching your reaction to this since you met Ace, and for me personally this has been the most difficult review of Marineford arc I've seen. Yes us One Piece fans are masochists and sadists
I can imagine I will watch future new one piece fans get to this arc and also bask in some kind of satisfaction knowing this is coming while they’re totally oblivious. It’s probably a rite of passage in the OP community 😂
@@GavinReadsItAll you'll have that "gotcha" moments.. And yours is one of my favourites.. like, when you cried during Ennies Lobby and how you adore Ace's character, i knew that once again, I'll smile while others are crying.. but not in a bad way.. I'd smile because I'm seeing how attached people are in the story.. and that's the right way to go through it..!
"We didn't go through all of that to lose him now!" 😭😭😭 Awww, Gavin!! I was waiting for this one!! You had my heart breaking all over again! Thank you for sharing your raw emotions about this devastatingly, beautiful arc! 🥲It's an extremely tough arc to accept, but you'll get through it! ❤
Marineford is such a good arc, it's brutal and heartbreaking, but such a good story. We've been building up to this climax for a long time and Oda delivered. Everytime I read or watch reviews of it I cry again.
I'm so happy you made it to this point without getting spoiled. Most people have this arc spoiled for them. Although, the booktubers that I've seen pick this series up have mostly avoided spoilers, so maybe you guys just have better communities.
I think what helps us booktubers is that we have a joined etiquette of no spoilers for anything, and I've been so blessed that no one from the OP community who discovered my channel spoiled it (though I did get a lot of Ace jokes that I now get)
Ace's fate really feels so... profoundly unfair. He was hounded by the government before he was even born, and then all this mess happens and we get that absolutely brutal hope spot that gets snatched away like immediately. But we can't deny it's a really good story and a very effective finale to this first part. So far Oda only killed characters in flashbacks, except for Merry, so what happened was all the more brutal for it. You're not alone, everyone was devastated by this arc.
I agree, so unfair! He was primarily being executed because of his bloodline, unfairly condemned, and it wasn't his fault Gol D Roger turned out to be his dad. But I am SO glad he met Whitebeard, that he had Luffy for a brother, and died with his family there. Ugh, breaks my heart still, he had so much more to live for.
@@GavinReadsItAll I think it’s possible the sadistic joy of seeing people emotionally wrecked by this arc overpowers the sadistic appeal of spoiling such an important plot point 😂
@@hobbitall only the one piece fandom would bully I MEAN convince someone to read the story and try their absolute hardest to prevent someone from being spoiled so they can read and enjoy blind.
You don’t have to feel stupid We all thought Ace was getting out of there, especially with those awesome panels of Luffy and Ace fighting together. I still cry about it and for me it’s been years 😭😭 I’ll never recover
It's actually crazy how Whitebeard - who had barely appeared in the series at all until Marineford - became an incredibly beloved and popular character in just one (comparatively) short arc.
i've been following your one piece reviews since the beginning. everytime you talk about how much you love ace, my heart swells because your love for him is so adorable and precious, and at the same time my heart breaks because of what's to come. and i teared up seeing you react to his death. biggest hugs from all of us, gavin! if you feel you need to take a break before the next arc, that's totally okay and we can wait. and don't feel like a fool for having hope. oda didn't kill characters (outside of flashbacks) for 500+ chapters and that lulled us into this feeling of "everything will be okay, ace will be fine." i was in complete shock when i read it years ago because i never would have imagined ace would actually die. and till now it still hurts :( i'm glad you weren't spoiled for this because ace's death and him being gold roger's son were two huge spoilers that are so hard to avoid. so i'm letting out a big sigh of relief here ahaha aaa take your time and stay strong, gavin! :') more big hugs from the one piece community
also yaay really happy to hear you say one piece is the best story you've ever read ! :) water 7 & enies lobby cemented one piece as my #1 favorite manga ever, then continuing and reading more and more arcs made it my #1 favorite story ever. (also it's gonna be hard to not cry again when reading one piece, but good luck!)
Yeah, Gavin not being spoiled of Ace's death is a miracle. It's the manga worlds version of Aerith's death. Even those who doesn't read/watch One Piece knows about it.
"This is the last time that Oda makes me cry..." Oh boy. Can't wait for you to read the next arcs!! "Fun" Facts: In an interview, Oda said that right after he introduced Ace, he already planned on killing him off. Although, he did keep on delaying it because Ace was so popular. Also, Oda deemed it necessary to kill him off so that Luffy could experience an intense hardship in pursuit of his dreams. While Oda plans his story points way in advance, he did not plan on: a) Ace being Roger's son; or b) Shanks joining the Marineford War.
Random storytime- I was 12/13 when I read this arc immediately after it was released. I was not prepared and was affected very similarly to Gav. But the next arc gave me hope. I hope it does rhe same for Gav
I really love how this arc builds Ace through the flashbacks. I mean we don't really have any major flashbacks for Ace by himself, but his character is built by showing how he interacts with others
If it makes you feel any better, think about it this way: Ace didn't die chained up, used as a political tool for the government to show off their power and threat towards all pirates, his only purpose being that of "Roger's son," a man Ace loathes his relation with and wants nothing to do with He died in a way he chose, free, under no shackles, saving the most important person to him, and in that person's arms, surrounded by all the people who loved him as their family, feeling nothing but love and pride, and as "Luffy's brother" and "Whitebeard's son"
As impactful as it is in the manga, I feel like the anime did a fantastic job at depicting the scene of Ace in Luffy’s arms. The whole war was chaotic and overwhelming but then suddenly goes quiet and feels like time stops. It is definitely one of the most powerful moments in the story for me and a lot of people I’m sure. Sorry u had to go through this pain for our entertainment but thanks for sharing it 😅❤ Goodluck holding in ur tears in future arcs
I do really appreciate that this is the one major event within the community that everyone aggressively prevents spoilers from in every way possible. I definitely wish I could read it for the first time again. Thank you for sharing your genuine reactions. I can't wait to read along with you in the new world ❤
That million pieces line is more brilliant than any joke I can ever come up with, and you managed to pull it off whilst in such a mentally clouded state. Also don't worry about the crying Gavin, we're not bothered so much about the crying. It's actually quite rare for people to power through past the Ace scene. I'm glad you liked the arc even with all the pain. We'd understand if you need to take a break after this arc or something, most people take a break around this part of the story.
This video is the reason I got a membership and no regrets! Thank you for posting it 24:12 Very important! It’s also connected to what Sengoku said in the Impel Down arc. I think it’s better when I theorize it in the next arc. 27:27 ; 29:15 ; 31:00 ; 33:15 ; 1:07:00 I love when siblings are portrayed to have a good relationship with another! 30:30 definitely 10/10 39:09 this is a nice delusion ngl 54:13 I was also so furious with Garp, but also impressed by how easily he managed Marco 1:04:40 who knew that anyone could start liking Mr. 3. 1:10:06 -1:24:29 This is one of Oda’s cruelest jokes to make his fans feel the highs after Ace is freed only to end in such a low… Please don’t feel stupid for having so much hope because we all had the hope until Oda decided otherwise. 1:26:45 it’s failure after failure since Sabaody. Luffy would’ve lost to Boa too if he fought her in Amazon Lily, no doubts. Luffy had been outclassed since arguably Thriller Bark. 1:27:50 Believe me Marineford will be lingering in your mind for a while. 1:30:07 we all missed the Strawhats so much 1:39:24 This is either the truth or a jinx. Good luck! 1:39:55 we can be really good at hiding spoilers, but there are some people who spoil One Piece. Even though you’ve avoided the BIGGEST spoiler, please be still a bit cautious about the fandom. I'm looking forward to the livestream and to the next video!
Watching you go through that chapter by chapter is quite the wild ride. Seeing your love for Ace (if only Roger had named him PAce then the will of P may have protected him) while knowing what was coming was like watching a train wreck that you know is going to end in tears. Like the Merry it is one of those moments in the One Piece journey that we all dread, but can't help going through. Side note: Roger's sword was named Ace, one of the 12 supreme grade swords. Books and Tropes has taken to calling Akainu, Magma Bastard, which feels appropriate.
Oda made us all cry over a boat. As the backstories clearly show, the characters are never as important as the character development their deaths have on their fellows. How Oda can give us backstories like these and still surprise us when he follows through on his worldbuilding is genuinely amazing writing. All that being said, your distress is completely understandable and I'm sorry for your loss.
There is a good reason why this is the climax for the first half of the history, for how important this war is for everything that will come in the future, yet You need to focus in the present. This saga is not done yet. The post war is next for you and, as it was for us before, you need to be strong as there is still a little brother left who needs you there.
@@GavinReadsItAll I don't want to spoil you but Oda already foreshadowing future death in one of his interview...but no major death happened since this arc and current one...i hope it will never happen and Oda change his mind about killing our favorite character...
this arc is so hectic and crazy the first time you read it , it definitely warrants a re-read. A couple things i particularly love -doflamingos speech at the end of chapter 556 - garps reaction to aces death and telling sengoku to hold him down or he will kill akainu -the fact that whitebeard straight up tells blackbeard your not going to be that guy. - Whitebeard's last words being "the one piece is real" which is heard all over the world inspiring a new wave of pirates once again. Also the reason shanks couldnt come earlier is because it was mentioned before he was fighting kaido in the new world and so had to finish that first. Im so glad you loved this arc ( and hated it) as much as the rest of us , this was the first arc i went from absolutely loving it to straight up going this is the greatest piece of fiction ive ever read.
I wish I mentioned more about Whitebeard and the way he was like “was I a good father” to his sons, I really wish I did, so a re-read and maybe a coherent review where I’m not emotional and crying is on the cards
Especially when so many "deaths" in the past turned out to be fake (still can't believe Pell survived an atomic blast for instance, yet Ace dies after getting a fist through his torso, I demand my money back)
@@GavinReadsItAll I mean, the fist did more visible, undeniable damage then the blast, somehow. Left a literal hole where half his heart and lungs were, crazy that he could still speak.(Can you tell I'm being the Um, Actually person so I can focus on technicalities and not my remnants of grief and crushing sadness about Ace dying? God, those two last words are hard to even type for irrational reasons, like it's not as true if I don't say it, you know?..) But I get it, emotionally speaking. It's so devastating where Pell's "death" was just sad.
little flashbacks in the edit sprinkled throughout your reaction...!!! That is so on-brand for one piece and I'm so happy to see you doing it in your edit. True fan, through-and-through!! Yeah, you might've seen elsewhere in comments that Akainu is Ah-kah-EE-noo, Aka meaning red and inu meaning dog, but because of the way the vowels in the middle blend together with Japanese pronunciations, it often sounds like "Ah-KYE-noo" with KYE being like the sounds from the word "kite". He's often also referred to as Sakazuki. Ironically, the word Sakazuki is the Japanese term for a ceremony of sharing drinks to form a bond, the same ceremony that made Luffy and Ace brothers. One sakazuki brought them together, another tears them apart... Looking forward to the much-needed cool down of the post-war arc next time!!
You know you're a true One Piece fan when you input flashbacks in your reactions. This sounds sadistic (probably is) but I enjoyed your reaction :) It's great to see people invested in one of your favorite series. Don't worry, we were all stupid in thinking Ace was going to live. Oda defied his own conventions on death this arc.
Watching this video up to the big moment was like watching a deaf baby duck happily playing on a train track while hearing a rumble in the distance. Glad you didn't get spoiled though. It's amazing to me how Oda can pull emotions like that out of me when most other stories I've read struggle to.
this hurt to watch😭😭 when i finished this arc i immediately started reading fanfictions that had ace survive marineford instead to help heal my heart before i was able to continue reading one piece again( i don’t recommend this tho as fanfics have a ton of spoilers) one thing that always amazes me about both this and the impel down arc is how oda was still able to write an amazing storyline that contained none of the strawhat members and still get all of us be wholeheartedly invested in what was going on
1:06:28 watching you giggle at Ace fighting with Luffy… Oh man… I remember when I went through the same emotional roller coaster. I had the biggest crush on Ace for years before this arc came out. Took me a while to forgive Oda for this one.
If I ever need a good cry I just watch that scene in the anime. Ace and Luffy's voice actors really add an extra ounce of emotion to that scene. You should 100% record your reaction to it when you get there in the anime!
10 years later chapter 574 still breaks my heart every single time incredible review you did gavin I know I am late but I enjoyed the genuine feelings you had towards the arc
Hey Gavin, just started watching, but feeling with you. Even after reading and re-reading Marineford a dozen times I still get teary-eyed towards the end. All I can say is that reading Post-War definitely helps with the healing (I think Amber was half-considering stopping One Piece from the trauma of this arc until she read Post-War :D ). Obviously no pressure since I know your video plate is full/you have your schedule, but just something to keep in mind. :)
Thanks for the Reaction and Review Gav, one of those times in books where reading it out loud makes you feel even more but you can’t help it. Straight up Akainu became the most hated character just over Blackbeard in that momen 1:23:59 t. “So Whitebeards gone too now huh” sorry bt fk after all that yea it’s like i don’t even know anymore.
Whitebeard tells Moby Dick "sorry" when she sinks. I'm like 98% sure Moby Dick was like Merry, and Whitebeard knew it. "If it wasn't for Kuma we would have had Luffy and all of his Strawhats fighting here by now." ...Are you sure about that? I think you may be forgetting a few obstacles in the way. And are you sure you would want that? Granny Nyon back on Amazon Lily was correct about Luffy going being like an ant throwing itself into a storm. Luffy barely made it out alive, literally carried out of there. What would have happened to the rest of them? Also a thing with Garp. Just like the Whitebeard Pirates are Ace's "found family" and the Strawhats are Luffy's. The Navy is Garp's. He's not just between family and title or family and duty. But family and family. No wonder he's so conflicted.
1:38 THIS WAS ME BACK IN CHAPTER 100 When Luffy smiled in the face of death, the contrast of his innocent, goofy, and childish smile with the sword about to swing through his neck made me had a premonition that this "manga" will be far more than what I will ever read! Another amazing review How to D your Gavin! Like an OP arc it made me laugh, smile, cry and made me can't wait for the next one!
I'm glad you enjoyed (tho "enjoyment" might not be the proper word to use here) this arc so much 😊 However, I gotta say that I was sad that you didn't mention what is, imo at least, the best speech I have ever read in a story by far - Doflamingo's speech about justice is such a masterpiece. I loved how he bluntly put everyone who participated in the war in their place and showcased so simply the futility of all of it. It instantly made him one of my favorite OP characters 🦩🕶 Also, I loved your reaction to Law's appearance 😁 But then again, I am a total Law fangirl 😄
I definitely need to re-review Marineford without being so emotional, it really clouded my review, like I didn’t even mention Whitebeard shouting “the one piece is real” too - another incredible moment! 😅
During your supercut of your past reactions to Ace was just... I had to take a break and walk around the room, then come back 3 weeks later. I remember watching it live and just... I couldn't. It felt impossible. Watching your videos is like reliving my entire childhood experience of reading/ watching One Piece. All the excitement, the highs, the lows and the absolute denial of what was happening. I'm really glad I stumbled upon your videos. Even though it made me relive those moments 😭
Man, this video gave me secondhand tears once again, you have some of the best OP reaction videos on UA-cam, it feels like one of my close friends started reading the manga and is keeping me updated on where they’re at. Also, Akainu’s name is pronounced Ocka-Eenu; it means “Red Dog” in Japanese. All of the admiral’s names actually share this same pattern and it’s just a code name of sorts. For example, Aokiji means Blue Pheasant and Kizaru means Yellow Monkey. Also, if you didn’t hate him enough already… the first time you were introduced to Akainu was in Robin’s flashback, he was the Vice Admiral that blew up the refugee ship with all of the innocents, he was just referred to by his real name which is actually Sakazuki.
@@Monkey-fk7zo Aka means red, Inu means dog, so it’s definitely separated there between the two words in Japanese pronunciation. That would be like saying “I drive a greenissan” instead of “green nissan” 😂 The English dub says it like that though so I guess either way is acceptable, I gotta admit it does sound cooler
@@GehrmansWheelchair that's how I teach English speaking people to read that name, I spelt it to them slowly like that and aokiji too, Ao-ki-ji . with Asian pronunciation
Just finished watching Impel Down review and now I'm here to show support! Isnt cute that Garp and Roger actually respect each other even though they are on the other side of the fight for the most of their lives? Now I can imagine Luffy having the same relationship with Coby and Smoker after a decade or so. Let's also stop for a while to think that the Marines needed all of their elite forces on their own home base (Fleet Admiral, Admirals and Vice admirals) + 5 of the warlords just to counter a fleet of 1Yonkou/emperor's? And there are still other 3 emperors out there. No wonder Sengoku agreed backing down when Shanks shown up. The strawhat pirates need a major powerup if they really want to be a player in the new world. Regarding Garp, I can understand how he feels. He dedicated his whole life a marine and even told the boys to follow him so they won't end up in this predicament, but they just want to live free and became a pirate. Imagine if the role is reversed and the readers want Luffy to abandon his life as a pirate and his dream like the way they want Garp to betray his friends and possibly, found family in the marines as well. It felt like Whitebeard intended to die in this war in the first place knowing he is very old and sick already. He just wants to save his son and give a way for them in the new world. Too bad, he just wasnt able to accomplish it fully. Many people said Shanks arrived too late and could have helped a lot but let's not forget, Shanks blocked Kaido from attacking Whitebeard on his way to Marineford. Let's give Shanks a break. Crocodile, Mr 3 and Buggy redeemed themselves in this arc. Crocodile felt like he reverted back to his old aspiring pirate from the scheming villain that we know back in Alabasta.
The part that makes me weep is when Whitebeard hugs Squard while he’s still inflicting the wound and assured him that all of this? He would do it for ANY of his sons. Being stabbed didn’t phase him but learning Squard didn’t have faith in him hurt Whitebeard more than anything else in the arc. RIP Ed Blaylock, one of my favorite actors, he played Fleet Admiral Sengoku to the end of this arc before passing away in 2017.
I've been there Gavin, I've been there 🔥🥀 My uncle was the one who introduced me to One Piece, he was a college student at the time and he would take me to the bookstore whenever a new One Piece volume was out. I remember 11 year old me bawling my eyes out and my uncle was like what are you doing and I showed him the panel where Ace turned into a donut and he said "oh" and left me alone 😂 I'm 23 now and that scene still hurts 💔 One Piece will only make you cry a couple times, but when it does, it hits you like a truck
24:28 it’s the struggle to give his grandkids freedoms vs the desire to protect them from the evils of the world. Because Garp knows how shitty the world can get. He knows how awful the Celestial Dragons are, and he’s fought more than his share of horrible pirates. If Ace and Luffy were marines, at the very least Garp could guide them and be there to help them. But he’s a D, hell he’s a Monkey. Freedom is extremely important to him. Garp very easily could’ve raised the boys at a Marine base, but he didn’t. He taught them to be strong, to be independent, and ultimately left them the ability to go out and live the lives they wanted to. So now that his grandkid is facing the consequences of the life he chose to live, the best thing Garp feels he can do is at least be there with him. It arguably wasn’t the right thing to do, and it arguably was.
These consequences were not entirely on Ace, though. Ace as a normal pirate would have been imprisoned. Execution happened because of Roger. Ace didn't die because of his own actions. And Garp could have been better at raising his grandchildren, like someone else who raised another boy who had advanced haki at 17.
1:30:30 and that's exactly what jinbei told luffy. we may have lost a lot in this war, but we still have those that we love and cherish-reasons to live for
Gavin's emotions were sucked inwards for him to process and protect himself from the realization of Ace's death that he lost the ability to process any emotions after that, he barely felt Shirohige's death 😭 When I first read I kinda knew Ace was done for when they revealed he was Roger's son but wasn't prepared to lose Shirohige as well :( Oda gut punching and tearing ours heart's out even if we prepared for some pain already.
One thing that I absolutely find beautiful about this arc is the fact that both the death of white beard and of ace we're so similar yet so different. Whitebeard's death meant a lot for the world, but aces death meant the world to Luffy. If Ace would have been saved, I feel like it would have cheapened the story, especially since this whole arc. This whole saga had been about how Luffy isn't exactly good enough at this point and he needs to get better or else everyone that he cares about will not make it. While whitebeard's dream was to have a family, ace wanted to escape his. While ace's death was tragic to Luffy, whitebeard's was probably a sigh of relief to those fed government propaganda who don't question it. I'm not dismissing your sadness but just trying to say if this story wasn't so layered and gripping, you wouldn't feel this way. Also you may want to read the Ace light novels after you get through wano as it does spoil some of that arc.
I cried for hours and got a big headache. I’ve been crying for 10 years The pain never goes away He was my favorite character as soon as I met him. I love cool older brother characters. The pain I feel like gets worse. Specially with the next small arc.
Since the video has gone up now I can finally tell this story. This is going to sound so dramatic, but it's 100% true; I remember exactly where I was when Ace died. It was midnight of the night that chapter got released in Japan, my best friend at the time called me and woke me up and sent me the (not legal) scans of the chapter. Cause what would happen is that people wanted these chapters so bad that someone in Japan would scan and then fans would rush to translate them into other languages so everyone could know what was happening at the same time, (and the app wasn't even invented yet). I cried myself to sleep, and woke up to the translations in msn messenger (yes, I'm old). AND I HAD TO GO TO SCHOOL THE NEXT DAY. I asked my mom for extra lunch money and bought my friends some ice cream so we could cheers to Ace, our big brother. Also I've had a theory, and it'll make you hate Blackbeard more, and I don't know if Oda confirmed it. Garp made damn sure that no one knew Ace was Roger's kid. And no one knew but Ace and Luffy, and a few others. So how did the Marines find out? Well, if Ace told the Whitebeard pirates...I think you can fill in the blanks. Blackbeard ratted him out to the navy, the bastard.
Oh yes that Blackbeard theory! That makes me hate him more. And I LOVE hearing your story about how you first read Ace’s death - I love that you got to experience all that, getting the scans, going to school. Those memories are so special, I’m so glad you have them and wish I could have had a similar experience. Thanks for sharing! And I used to love MSN Messenger haha I used it every single day after school to talk to all the friends I just spent all day with at school 😂 good times
@@GavinReadsItAll Anytime Gav, always happy to share One Piece stories~ Or One Piece video game recs if you want them! Right?? Msn was the shit back then, I did the same with my friends 😆
19:10 if Sabondy Archipelago hadn’t awakened a reader to this fact, then this arc is the brutal slap to the face to make sure you know the Straw Hats are small fish in a big sea.
True but imo it was thriller bark when it became clear because this was the first time the whole crew was needed to beat one enemy even with outside help which isn't normal for the straw hats.
Marineford is one of the arcs where I feel like the anime does it better. From the massive scale of the war to the emotional goodbyes, it hits differently with the animation, voice acting and especially the music. 12/10 would cry again.
Somehow it never occurred to me before, but Kaido is partly to blame for the tragedies of Marineford. If he hadn't slowed down Shanks we might not have lost Ace!
Dude I was laying in bed last night thinking, "Tomorrow is the day." that this video came out. I knew that was going to hit hard and it did! I appreciate the raw emotion you bring to all of these.
When the chapter where Ace's death first happened so many people thought it had to be a fakeout death or something. Oda spent all this time building this event up only to just deliver one of the biggest gut punches in all of shonen manga.
I still remember a lot of people are refusing to accept the death even when the panel showed the burning of paper into nothingness. As they are waiting for the next week esp, they are saying that phoneix has the reborn or revival ability so marco technically can save ace. It is really an emotional ride.
I've been waiting for you to reach this arc from the beginning of your journey. It was like watching a train wreck in motion, when you first latched onto Ace like that in Alabasta. I remember thinking to myself, oh well, he's doomed like the rest of us. I know it's been a very tough and heartbreaking arc, but thank you, this review came just in time since I got really sick and watching made it easier to go through.
Im late to the party. This arc was THE hardest for me to watch/resd. I laughed, i felt hope, i cried, i cared so much, and i felt the absolute defeat and sting. My emotions, my feelings, i had to take a break from one piece after this so i could recover, i took a 2 month break. I feel for you Gavin, i felt like you. But you made it and kept going. Good on you
people complain a lot about fake out deaths in one piece and i definitely am not the biggest fan but the fact that oda basically conditions you to expect that no one’s ever going to die outside of a flashback really increases the impact of the end of marineford imo
I think that’s why I had such a hard time accepting it and I kept making excuses til the very end, even after seeing the chapter title, 90% of me couldn’t believe it
When I first went through the roller coaster of a ride that is Marineford, I was also as excited and as psyched as you. And once I got to the part where we all get the rug pulled out from under us…well, that’s the only fictional scene that’s ever made me cry for literally 3 days straight. 🥺
Akainu is prononced Aka-Inu, and in japanese aka mean red and inu mean dog, so akainu is red dog. Kizaru (the admiral that'S made of light) mean yellow monkey, and aokiji mean blue pheasant.
I remember one of the first videos of yours I ever saw was the alabasta review. The second I saw your reaction to meeting ace I hit subscribe and thought "I have GOT to see how he handles marineford"
I both love and hate how sadistic that was haha but now I can't wait for new OP readers to discover the story, fall in love with Ace, and then lose him too. Does that make me a bad person?
I am sorry Gavin, but don't call your self idiot or stupid because that will make me stupid cuz i cried a lot as well in this arc 🤣🤣 when I was reading this back in the days, I was a mess as well, I was overjoyed when Ace was saved then destroyed the following chapters saying out loud don't stop ace no no, 😭😭 This was a 100/10 review for a 1000/10 Arc
This arc and that moment will stay with me forever, and every time I think about it, it brings both joy and sadness. Starting from Impel Down to the end of the war, it's such an emotional, exciting, nail-biting page-turner.
Gavin shouted to Grap: That is your grandson! Me at the other side of the screen shouting back at him: BUT THIS IS HIS DUTY!!! I am glad that Grap does not abandon his duty at this moment just because the criminals are his grandsons, as a descendent of two military grandpas I am very proud of Grap.
I’m ashamed to admit I laughed even though I sympathize with the pain to the “Why is it called One Piece when I’m in a million pieces” line
Honestly rewatching it myself I’m like omg some things should have been deleted and that’s one of them haha 😂

Legend says he's still whispering "it's a metaphor" to himself to this day... And I can't blame him 😭
There's a twisted part of my brain like the evil Kermit meme that's telling me to pretend he's still alive, and the urge to believe him is strong, cause maybe it WAS a metaphor
@@GavinReadsItAll I am still in denial that he's dead. Like maybe he's just lost his memories and being nursed by some random good-doer.
@@GavinReadsItAll I just see it this way, he's still alive before Marineford, and that's the part of the story I live in 🫢
What I find so funny about this too is, a metaphor for what? It doesn't even make any sense lmfao T_T
I think I remember reading the part of Marine Ford after Ace's death in a daze. It's just so fitting that Luffy is unable to do anything during that part of the arc
Law was everyone’s rebound after ace I swear
Once I’m over my mourning period I’m sure he’ll be mine too 😂

When you kept saying "he is not dead, we saved him", I wanted to tell you that I think we DID save him. he lived unsure of his worth, and he was reassured in the end. his soul was saved
I needed to hear that

Oh the way you described that really did put more of Garp’s mental state into perspective - oof, that hits harder
@@GavinReadsItAll definitely doesn't make it easier re-reading it
given garp's stregnth, he didn't really put that much effort to be a true obstacle , i feel like he purposefully held back
@@potatorisa absolutely agreed!
You were correct the first time! Inazuma is always carrying a glass of wine, because they're a badass.
They have grown a lot in my estimation now 🍷
Also, Sakazuki (Akainu's name) means the same sake oath that luffy and ace took as a sign of brotherhood. So his oath to luffy killed him- he could not watch him die. I just find that to be a beautiful piece of word play
Oda is a wordsmith, and also sadistic

That upbeat intro music with the sunshine visuals after Gavin just weeping inconsolably was kind of absurdly funny.
Monster 😂
😂yep
😂😂
Right!? It made laugh then I felt bad for laughing 😅
is it absurd though? I mean, it's really only funny because we know how we ourselves were at that point, so I would rather call it cathartic. (and I get teary eyed thnking about emotional One Piece scenes, and instantly tear up if I just see a 5s clip of the anime of the moments, and will bawl when I completely reread or rewatch them)
Oda's way of making us so happy first before destroying us is just so mean but amazing.
Yeah like just kill him if you’re gonna do it but why did he have to give us false hope for the most fleeting of moments 😭
Man, everytime you thirsted for Ace a part of me was hurt because I knew this was eventually coming. 😥
But man, this arc is soooo good, man. Whitebeard went like a fucking boss and is still remembered by the fandom as the boss he was.
I have read a lot of books but Whitebeard's death is the most badass death I've ever seen/read. Just incredible!
I had to think like Oda when reacting to Ace, just for maximum damage 😅
This is the Way
He's in that anime flashback life now.
Fun fact! Oda was expecting his first child while writing this arc so a lot of the themes of Fatherhood in Marineford were him voicing his own concerns and anxieties
Oh wow! That just adds a whole new layer to this and Whitebeard asking if he was a good father, just brilliant!
Beautiful
Trust me when I say this most of us have been absolutely looking forward to watching your reaction to this since you met Ace, and for me personally this has been the most difficult review of Marineford arc I've seen. Yes us One Piece fans are masochists and sadists
I can imagine I will watch future new one piece fans get to this arc and also bask in some kind of satisfaction knowing this is coming while they’re totally oblivious. It’s probably a rite of passage in the OP community 😂
@@GavinReadsItAlland all of this because oda is such an master storyteller, an emotion-smith of the highest caliber.

Marineford really is something special, and now just the word alone makes me shiver
every time the tears and sadness hits even more i swear
I am so glad that you got to experience it without being spoiled!
I knew it would happen, was still an incredible arc though
I’m genuinely surprised no one spoiled it for me sooner, I can imagine many people were tempted

The Ace jokes run deep in the fandom. Lol. All the "donuts" and the good ol' "Akainu had an Ace up his sleeve" and whatnot. 😅
It's actually crazy how Whitebeard - who had barely appeared in the series at all until Marineford - became an incredibly beloved and popular character in just one (comparatively) short arc.
i've been following your one piece reviews since the beginning. everytime you talk about how much you love ace, my heart swells because your love for him is so adorable and precious, and at the same time my heart breaks because of what's to come. and i teared up seeing you react to his death.
biggest hugs from all of us, gavin! if you feel you need to take a break before the next arc, that's totally okay and we can wait.
and don't feel like a fool for having hope. oda didn't kill characters (outside of flashbacks) for 500+ chapters and that lulled us into this feeling of "everything will be okay, ace will be fine." i was in complete shock when i read it years ago because i never would have imagined ace would actually die. and till now it still hurts :(
i'm glad you weren't spoiled for this because ace's death and him being gold roger's son were two huge spoilers that are so hard to avoid. so i'm letting out a big sigh of relief here ahaha
aaa take your time and stay strong, gavin! :') more big hugs from the one piece community

For me, Ennies Lobby is an S tier arc but Marine ford is a tier above that and the name of that tier is "depression"
That checks 😭
Reached such highs that it brought us low.
"This is the last time that Oda makes me cry..." Oh boy. Can't wait for you to read the next arcs!!
"Fun" Facts:
In an interview, Oda said that right after he introduced Ace, he already planned on killing him off.
I totally understand why Oda did it for Luffy to grow as a character, but like, WWWHHHYYYY 😭
At least some of the future cries will be happy tears?
That's a common trope in shonen
Random storytime- I was 12/13 when I read this arc immediately after it was released. I was not prepared and was affected very similarly to Gav. But the next arc gave me hope. I hope it does rhe same for Gav
So young to be exposed to this heartbreak
Oof I was around 14, and it truly was heartbreaking
Watching people react to this arc hurts my heart every time, I'm so sorry we all set you up for this ❤
Thank you 💔
I really love how this arc builds Ace through the flashbacks.
I mean we don't really have any major flashbacks for Ace by himself, but his character is built by showing how he interacts with others
If it makes you feel any better, think about it this way:
Ace didn't die chained up, used as a political tool for the government to show off their power and threat towards all pirates, his only purpose being that of "Roger's son," a man Ace loathes his relation with and wants nothing to do with
He died in a way he chose, free, under no shackles, saving the most important person to him, and in that person's arms, surrounded by all the people who loved him as their family, feeling nothing but love and pride, and as "Luffy's brother" and "Whitebeard's son"
Gah you’re setting me off again 😭 but you’re so right, that is comforting
“Why is it called one piece when I’m in a million of them” LITERALLY 😭😭sending virtual hugs bc we all need them💛💛💛
I truly meant every word but I also recognise it's a bit of a dramatic statement to make haha

That million pieces line is more brilliant than any joke I can ever come up with, and you managed to pull it off whilst in such a mentally clouded state. Also don't worry about the crying Gavin, we're not bothered so much about the crying. It's actually quite rare for people to power through past the Ace scene.
Reminder that Akainu's name is Sakazuki. During the Ohara incident, he was the one who blew up the evacuation ship.
So that’s why so many people told me to remember him!! I hate him sooooooooooooo much
Oda made us all cry over a boat.
There is a good reason why this is the climax for the first half of the history, for how important this war is for everything that will come in the future, yet

That cut from total excitement from Ace being freed to the next chapter was brutal lol great video
this arc is so hectic and crazy the first time you read it , it definitely warrants a re-read. A couple things i particularly love
-doflamingos speech at the end of chapter 556
- garps reaction to aces death and telling sengoku to hold him down or he will kill akainu
-the fact that whitebeard straight up tells blackbeard your not going to be that guy.
The fact that oda actually decided to actually kill ace and whitebeard knowing how much emotional weight they both have made it 1000x sadder
Left a literal hole where half his heart and lungs were, crazy that he could still speak.(Can you tell I'm being the Um, Actually person so I can focus on technicalities and not my remnants of grief and crushing sadness about Ace dying? little flashbacks in the edit sprinkled throughout your reaction...!!!
I don’t know why my sick mind went there with the flashbacks but I was thinking like Oda 😂
1:34:18 Remember in Skypiea? The little girl, Aisa, said something very similar to Koby
I had to think like Oda when editing this video and the reaction I’m sure everyone was waiting for since I first declared my love for Ace 😂
Watching this video up to the big moment was like watching a deaf baby duck happily playing on a train track while hearing a rumble in the distance.
Glad you didn't get spoiled though. It's amazing to me how Oda can pull emotions like that out of me when most other stories I've read struggle to.
this hurt to watch😭😭 when i finished this arc i immediately started reading fanfictions that had ace survive marineford instead to help heal my heart before i was able to continue reading one piece again( i don’t recommend this tho as fanfics have a ton of spoilers)
one thing that always amazes me about both this and the impel down arc is how oda was still able to write an amazing storyline that contained none of the strawhat members and still get all of us be wholeheartedly invested in what was going on
Oh yeah, without the straw hats the arcs shouldn’t have been as good, but they were pretty incredible
1:06:28 watching you giggle at Ace fighting with Luffy… Oh man… I remember when I went through the same emotional roller coaster. I had the biggest crush on Ace for years before this arc came out. Took me a while to forgive Oda for this one.
Yeah it’s gonna take me a while to forgive him too 😂
If I ever need a good cry I just watch that scene in the anime. Ace and Luffy's voice actors really add an extra ounce of emotion to that scene. You should 100% record your reaction to it when you get there in the anime!
I will absolutely be reacting to that moment, it's going to destroy me!
I may be able to do Post-War a touch bit earlier than I was expecting around my haunted York trip, plus I’ll do anything to feel joy again tbh
well, you'll be happy to know that in Universal Studio park, in japan, has the Whitebeard and Ace graves... it's beatiful.
1:05:31 the joy you had at this moment broke my heart 😢I really started crying all over again. Oda really need a disclaimer for this arc 😭😭😭
"If it wasn't for Kuma we would have had Luffy and all of his Strawhats fighting here by now."
...Are you sure about that? I think you may be forgetting a few obstacles in the way.
And are you sure you would want that? Granny Nyon back on Amazon Lily was correct about Luffy going being like an ant throwing itself into a storm.
Luffy barely made it out alive, literally carried out of there. What would have happened to the rest of them?
Also a thing with Garp. Just like the Whitebeard Pirates are Ace's "found family" and the Strawhats are Luffy's.
The Navy is Garp's. He's not just between family and title or family and duty. But family and family. No wonder he's so conflicted.
1:38 THIS WAS ME BACK IN CHAPTER 100
When Luffy smiled in the face of death, the contrast of his innocent, goofy, and childish smile with the sword about to swing through his neck made me had a premonition that this "manga" will be far more than what I will ever read!

I'm glad you enjoyed (tho "enjoyment" might not be the proper word to use here) this arc so much 😊
However, I gotta say that I was sad that you didn't mention what is, imo at least, the best speech I have ever read in a story by far - Doflamingo's speech about justice is such a masterpiece. I loved how he bluntly put everyone who participated in the war in their place and showcased so simply the futility of all of it. It instantly made him one of my favorite OP characters 🦩🕶
Also, I loved your reaction to Law's appearance 😁 But then again, I am a total Law fangirl 😄
"Last time oda will make me cry"🥺
Lets see how true this statement is in the future
I've already read and filmed my Post-War arc review, and spoiler alert, I already proved myself wrong 😂
The moment you said in a previous arc Ace was your favorite…as someone with him in my top 5…I FELT YOUR PAIN😭
Also, if you didn’t hate him enough already… the first time you were introduced to Akainu was in Robin’s flashback, he was the Vice Admiral that blew up the refugee ship with all of the innocents, he was just referred to by his real name which is actually Sakazuki.
is A-kai-nu
@@Monkey-fk7zo Aka means red, Inu means dog, so it’s definitely separated there between the two words in Japanese pronunciation. That would be like saying “I drive a greenissan” instead of “green nissan” 😂 The English dub says it like that though so I guess either way is acceptable, I gotta admit it does sound cooler
@@GehrmansWheelchair that's how I teach English speaking people to read that name, I spelt it to them slowly like that and aokiji too, Ao-ki-ji . with Asian pronunciation
10/10 editing on chapter 574 👏
We all knew this was coming and your love for Ace didn't make it any easier. I was so worried for you ever since your Alabasta video ^^'
No one warned me, I'm both grateful and mad at everyone 😂
Oh man the flashbacks to your old videos talking about how much you love Ace 😭. That hit me almost like a real One Piece flashback.
Hopefully made Oda proud with that editing
I've been there Gavin, I've been there 🔥🥀
My uncle was the one who introduced me to One Piece, he was a college student at the time and he would take me to the bookstore whenever a new One Piece volume was out. I remember 11 year old me bawling my eyes out and my uncle was like what are you doing and I showed him the panel where Ace turned into a donut and he said "oh" and left me alone 😂
I'm 23 now and that scene still hurts 💔
One Piece will only make you cry a couple times, but when it does, it hits you like a truck
I love that you and your uncle got to have those memories together, I wish I had someone who took me to the bookstore to get new volumes!
Not the donut xD 🍩
1:30:30 and that's exactly what jinbei told luffy.
we may have lost a lot in this war, but we still have those that we love and cherish-reasons to live for
Gavin's emotions were sucked inwards for him to process and protect himself from the realization of Ace's death that he lost the ability to process any emotions after that, he barely felt Shirohige's death 😭
When I first read I kinda knew Ace was done for when they revealed he was Roger's son but wasn't prepared to lose Shirohige as well :(
Oda gut punching and tearing ours heart's out even if we prepared for some pain already.
OMG you made me tear up even though i knew very well what was going to happen. Such a genuine reaction.
I’ve been crying for 10 years
The pain never goes away
He was my favorite character as soon as I met him.
While I agree that would be a great turn of events the WG knew of his parentage when they offered for Ace to join the Seven Warlords.
Crocodile was the unexpected mvp this arc
Watching you so hopeful and happy at the start over your very wrong conclusion of Ace being saved KILLS me 😂
This was either the best video I could have posted, or the worst 😂
@@GavinReadsItAll It's the best knowing what's to come.
This is now my fav video on the platform
19:10 if Sabondy Archipelago hadn’t awakened a reader to this fact, then this arc is the brutal slap to the face to make sure you know the Straw Hats are small fish in a big sea.
Luffy's first big loss in Sabaody definitely sobered me up somewhat, but this arc really demonstrated it to me in full force
True but imo it was thriller bark when it became clear because this was the first time the whole crew was needed to beat one enemy even with outside help which isn't normal for the straw hats.
You finding a ray of hope and light in the possible reunion of the straw hats was so beautiful considering what jimbe says to luffy later.
"this is the last time that oda make me cry" - Gavin, 9 mars 2023.
Yeah right XD
I’ve lost all feeling and meaning after this arc, I’m just a shell
@@GavinReadsItAll It certainly would be easier to continue reading One Piece that way. ;)
This was such a ride, loved watching this chapter to chapter.
Gavin at the start of the video/ arc: “I have hope in my heart, I have faith Ace will be alright”
Gavin at the end of the arc/ video: In Denial
Still in denial
Dude I was laying in bed last night thinking, "Tomorrow is the day." that this video came out. I knew that was going to hit hard and it did! I appreciate the raw emotion you bring to all of these.
Thank you! 😊
When the chapter where Ace's death first happened so many people thought it had to be a fakeout death or something. Oda spent all this time building this event up only to just deliver one of the biggest gut punches in all of shonen manga.
Glad he didn't just fool me! Seems like those fake-out deaths were a bit more purposeful
Hope you get well soon, and thanks so much for joining me on my journey to pain
"Ever heard of ace in a hole? Now get ready for Ace with a hole."
-Admiral Akainu probably
TOOO SOOOONNNNN
It destroyes me to see you so positiv and hopeful at the beginning, only to know you are running straight into a disaster
Editing this was a nightmare also watching in real time as I head towards the iceberg
1:26:15 “Anyone else you want to take? Hmmm?!😒☹️” somehow cracked me up? 😅 How can someone look and sound sooo done😂
Akainu is prononced Aka-Inu, and in japanese aka mean red and inu mean dog, so akainu is red dog. Kizaru (the admiral that'S made of light) mean yellow monkey, and aokiji mean blue pheasant.
I love those meanings!
Thank you 😭
This arc and that moment will stay with me forever, and every time I think about it, it brings both joy and sadness.
