- There are A LOT of rumors about Mormons. "Mormons have little green men that work in the temple." "Mormons have horns." "Mormons can't eat chicken on Tuesdays." The rumors just don't seem to end!
In this episode, Kwaku and Justin react as David reads a few of the crazy rumors. Some of the rumors are pretty awesome. Some of the rumors are downright hilarious. Either way, we love laughing about the rumors and myths. What crazy things have you heard about Mormons? Let us know in the comments below!

Someone told my Mom on her mission that their priest told them that if they even looked at a Mormon they would catch on fire. The funniest part for me is that they were looking my Mom in the eye when they said this to her.

My seminary teacher taught me that folding our arms when praying is just to show respect and not being busy with our hands, and bowing our head is to show humility and unworthiness before the lord, and closing our eyes is just to make sure we are not distracted and are focusing on praying
I wouldn't exactly say we're showing "unworthiness." As literal children of our Heavenly Father we are of infinite worth. Everything else though, I completely agree with as a good description of why we pray by folding our arms, closing our eyes and bowing our heads.
Debbie Bunny: the thing is, you aren’t worthy. That’s one of the fundamental principles of Christianity. Otherwise, you don’t need Jesus.
I would say the most logical reason is that it keeps the little kids from punching each other during the prayer. But that doesn't mean they won't use their elbows.

Once when the Sisters & I were teaching someone, they said “how do you deal not going to the bathroom?” And we were like “what?” And he’s like “I heard you can’t go to the bathroom because your body is a temple?” 😂😂😂

I don't live in an area where LDS is common, in fact I've never met anyone Mormon and it's never been mentioned in school or whilst growing up, but am a Christian and have been binge watching your videos, really interesting!
Sophie Mel Hey! I was in the same boat as you, then found our there was a mormon chapel only a 10 minute walk away from where I live. If you ever have a chance I really recommend visiting as it’s a great chance to learn more. Even if you don’t want to convert, everyone I met was incredibly friendly.

Please do your research, go into their history, Joseph Smith is not who they portray him to be, or either is their doctrine, it is contrary to the bible. Do not be deceived, this is a false prophet!
Until this video, I believed the apparent myth about not going to heaven without having children, and that the more children you have, the better your chances in the afterlife. Thanks for debunking this stuff in a lighthearted way!
Abi Pereira Haha don't worry, there are lots of things that seem true based on the things we believe (like the importance of having children) but that aren't true (like needing to have children to get into heaven). Some of the rumors are definitely more believable than others!
.... but its fact that women cannot be glorified to the top level of the Celestial Kingdom unless they are sealed to a Priesthood holder.

I think I may know where the carrot one came from...a man in one of my wards said when he served his mission in Japan the word for "personage" was similar to the word "carrot". Some new missionaries had a hard time when reciting the first vision and said it as,"two carrots descended out of heaven and one carrot pointed to the other..." But I wonder how a lot of English speaking peoples heard this.
"Personage/figure" would probably translate as "person-shape" (ninjin), which in Japanese is homophonous with "carrot".

"ningen" is person, "ninjin" is carrot. However, "jin" on the end of the names of countries indicates a person from that country, like amerikajin, furansujin, roshiajin, nihonjin, etc., so it's understandable that a person just learning the language would accidentally use "ninjin" instead of "ningen" to say "person."

I served my mission in France, and we heard a lot that they thought Mormons where like the Amish with no electricity, modern technology etc.
I leave for my mission in France in a month!! Excited to inform people that that isn’t the case lol

This isn’t quite a misconception, but apparently names are hard to say. In history class we learned about the Mormon Trail, and we were asked who settled Utah. One girl raised her hand and said “Birg-hand Young.” I also have an Angel Moroni necklace, and my friend asked who it was, so I said who. She goes “What the heck kind of name is ‘Mor-meen-ee?!’”

I've literally had people ask to feel my head to see if I had horns after finding out I'm a Mormon. A very old, insane rumor; that we become...er...intimate...with each other on altars in the temple. The Marriott rumor though, there may be some truth to that. Marriott himself, the founder of the hotel chain was a Mormon. I was told years ago by several other members that couples who were getting married in the temple could stay one night in a Marriott hotel for free. Most people who lived in the Midwest and East used to have to travel very far in those days to get to a temple. I also heard that the Marriott hotel has both the Book of Mormon and the Holy Bible in each room. I hope that one is true!
I hadn't heard about the discounts, but it definitely is true that they have a Book of Mormon and a Bible in each room, at least in the ones I have stayed in. It's really nice!
When I was on my mission, we had a lady that kept telling us that our church had a Mormon mafia and we would whack anyone who left the church. LOL! I tried to explain that was absurd and not true but she wouldn't hear it. My companion made a T-shirt to work out in that he wrote on it saying: "Official Baptizer for the Mormon Mafia." Ha ha ha! I cry.

While the Danite group was technically a group of LDS members, it was never a sanctioned LDS group. Joseph Smith even rejected the connection many created between the church and the group made up of church members, calling the group a violent and evil "secret combination, and ultimately excommunicating any and all devoted members of the Danite group from the LDS church.
historically speaking the group began as a vigilante fraternity, created with the design of keeping watch and providing protection against the heinous an continuous persecutions against the members of the church. but the fraternity quickly grew into a group hell-bent on enacting revenge against those doing the persecuting. the Danite group never whacked members who left the church, that part is wholly wrong. but quite oppositely sought to protect the members against antagonists and violent mobs trying to hurt the members of the church.
Historians generally agree that while initially Smith approved of the formation of the group, he likely was not privy to their plans or actions, and once he became aware quickly denounced the group and took actions against those in the group.
Ultimately to believe that the Danites were an LDS organization is not correct, nor is a belief that that organization was a "mafia-like" group which "whacked" dissenters.
I once heard that Joseph Smith used the same stone he claimed could find buried Native American gold to translate the buried Native American golden plates he claimed to have found.

That's actually true.
That is true and seer stones as they were called were also used in the Bible by some prophets to translate, see beyond the veil or for other religious purposes. Whether or not it actually was a spiritual object and had crazy cool properties, who knows. Moses had a staff that could turn to a snake and break a rock on dry land and water comes out or split the red sea in half. Its not the power of the object but by they worthiness of who uses it and if God the father bestows his power upon the children of men (people)

Hiya! I was baptised on 1st September this year, I just had my first visit to the temple on general conference weekend, it was such a good weekend! I'm really glad I found this church but I'm struggling with the anxiety of being called to do my first talk.. any tips?

Hey, thanks for reaching out! And congrats on your baptism, we're so happy for you! As far as your first talk... it can be scary to give a talk in front of so many people, especially as a recent convert. You might feel like you don't know enough doctrine or whatever else. But I can promise you something: Long-time members of the Church LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the testimony and faith of recent converts. Just keep in mind that you really don't need to say the doctrine perfectly, just with sincerity. Pray that the spirit will guide your words. You'll do fabulously!

I’m LDS, an someone heard a conversation I was having with another member, and asked us why our Faith in God only lasted until we were 12. Clearly, she thought we were literally speaking, instead of talking about the progress on our reward.
Never heard of these, but owning half the world's buffalo population was believable. Definitely.
And when I first heard of baptisms for the dead, I thought it meant baptizing the deceased before they're buried
When I was young we had some Missionaries at our house and they were telling us a story from some other missionaries they knew. One Missionary was visiting a man they had given a Book of Mormon to and were asking him if he had read any of it. The man said Yeah!, Oh yeah I read it. They ask him some questions and he would just nod yes at everything. Finally to test him one Missionary said: How did you like the part about Joseph Smith riding the Buffalo across the prairie? The guy said: Oh, that was the best part! LOL!

Also some have said people ask them if they can feel their horns. Oh, and our prehensile tails, too.
I have gotten that our garments give us magic powers. I have always gotten we baptized dead bodies. The rumors crack me up cause they make us sound cooler than we are

when my brother was on his mission (he was in a poor place in argentina and they are going through kinda like our great depression) one missionary in his area got shoot there was blood every where on his suit but nothing was on the garments it was not ripped up any where it was just white like it’s supposed to be but under that you could see the gun shot wound so maybe people who think garments are bullet proff might heard stories like this one and miss understood

Garments are our form of religious clothing. Ive heard stories of people getting burned but not anywhere their garments were touching. We make promises with God he will love and bless us not sure the garments are anthing more than symbolic but its the promises we make with God that matter. I would love superpowers though. Of that I have a few.
I was always told the Church owns a vast percentage of the Coka Cola Company. I've never been able to find that one out for sure. I guess it's possible?

The temple recommend and Marriott hotel “myth” is partially true. About 20 years ago, my family would stay over a the Marriott by the DC temple and we would get a discount (not free) for staying. So yes, that was a thing!

My great-great grandmother, when she was preparing to leave Switzerland for America to join the Church, was told that if she joined the Mormons, they would chop all of her long, thick, and curly hair. She joined the Church and kept her hair.
Two days ago I met with missionaries and they asked me to pray with them and I agreed ( never done that before). And the one folded his arms and I did, too. The other folded his fingers. Was a very ... interesting experience.

What are your thoughts about all the shootings/killings that are happening all around the world?
It's terrible! Absolutely terrible. My heart goes out to everyone affected. Florida, Syria, and everywhere else. I served an lds mission in a very dangerous area of the world where gun violence was a daily issue. Gun control is a big topic of discussion nowadays (and maybe reform can help, maybe it can't, I don't know) but, in my personal opinion, I think the long-term solution has to be to strengthen the family unit. I don't know exactly how we do that from a governmental point of view, because you can't exactly legislate morality, but I think that as the number of stable, loving families increases worldwide the number of maniacs we see will decrease. What are your thoughts?
David Snell , it is such a heart breaking disaster...I just scared for all the innocent people and mostly our missionaries.
My heart goes out as well. But I do not think gun control will help. People that want to hurt will find a way always. There is the black market, parents who have them regardless of gun control, and even knives. They could use anything. It just saddens me that satan can influence people to do such terrible things...
I've heard an alternative rendition of the "praying to carrots" rumor, but it was actually metaphorical, rather than literal. They said that "Mormons worship carrots", and the 'carrots' concept comes from a quote about religion in general being designed around, "dangling carrots in front, while threatening the whip from behind".
The idea was that carrots are rewards and the whip was punishments, and that Mormons worship the idea of gaining rewards. It was in a way a slam on Mormons as being greedy and only doing things out of the potential for reward, rather than out of a love for God. the "praying to carrots" rumor may have been a corrupted or telephone game result of that kind of original sentiment.
obviously it is not true, but because of he fact that the Mormon church views the degrees of glory as stages of inheritance and reward from God granted according to the deeds done in the flesh (Romans 2:6, 2 Corinthians 5:10, 1 Corinthians 4:5, 1 Peter 1:17, Revelation 20:12, Psalms 62:12, Proverbs 24:12, Colossians 3:25, Proverbs 11:31, 1 Corinthians 3:8, etc.), I can see how some may have thought that. especially since LDS scripture expounds on those of the Bible on this topic, even proclaiming that all blessings are gained through obedience (D&C 130:20-21), therefore, any obedience offered is supposedly done to gain the blessing which that law is associated with. Thus, they assume, the obedience was for the reward and not out of love.

My understanding about the mafia bit is that, supposedly, about 20-40 years ago in Moscow missionaries converted the son of a man who, at the time, was the kingpin of a major gang, so he declared that all LDS missionaries in Moscow would be under his agents' protection.
50 years in Mormonism + a 2yr mission, I NEVER heard the "little green men" rumor. I think that was a Mormon making up a cute story with the intent of muddying the water of REAL weird Mormon ideas....like the "Salamander" story.

Well, there are similarities to our doctrine and Harry Potter. After the Resurrection, we will get put into 4 kingdoms like the 4 houses in Harry Potter. The Celestial Kingdom can be Hogwarts because you learn stuff with God just like in Harry Potter you learn by Dumbledore. So you can say that the Celestial Kingdom is sort of like Hogwarts.

As a missionary in England (1968) we were told by some non-members that their priest told them that the reason we were there was to steal women and take them from England to the United States for our wives through an undersea tunnel. My jaw still drops in disbelief that someone would believe that ! I also had a non-member friend ask if it's true that we dig up bodies in graveyards to baptize them.
My cousin got asked why mormons don't use vending machines
Okay, for the garments are bulletproof one, they aren't that far off. I have met this one guy and he was the Sunday school teacher in my cousin's ward. He told us a story about a time when he was cutting down trees with a chainsaw. I don't know all the technicalities of it but the chainsaw came back and hit him in the leg. He was expecting his leg to be cut off at the worst. He looked down and it had cut open his jeans and his garments but there wasn't a scratch on his leg. Not one. Some may say that maybe it didn't fire back hard enough but think in your head. Chainsaw cutting through jeans and garments and not even touching the skin. Even when you have control over the chainsaw it's hard to do that.

I think the folded arms thing is an appeal to early Christianity. Up until about 1100AD all Christians prayed with crossed arms.
Somewhat unrelated, but it's why pretzels are twisted. Records from about 610AD show that monks in Bavaria used to give them to children as a reward for saying their daily prayers, and that the twisted ends were said to resemble the crossed arms of a praying child.
I took carrots out of the fridge when you talked about them, but I didn't pray to them.
In the Japanese language there are two words... Ninjin and Ningen. One means two people the other two carrots. Heard that some missionaries have mixed those words up, and in telling the Joseph Smith story of the First Vision - said that two carrots descended from heaven. I never mixed those words up as a missionary in Japan - but can see where that false myth could have started.
8:30 I don't fold my arms, I actually keep my arms in close to me, but I cross my wrists in front of me so that my hands can't reach my arms in any way, because I have anxiety, and if I'm not careful I will compulsively scratch at my skin.

My grandmother used to believe that Mormons grew little devil horns after baptism.. so when we were all baptized, she would try to feel under our hair for the horns.. needless to say she never found one.

You forgot "Mormons have horns growing on the heads" my dad got the question asked during his mission.
I do know a friend who on their mission befriended two local gangs, and always had a pair of bodyguards while tracting through their turf. Crossing the border between their territories was always tense though.

In the Philippines there are myths that the missionaries always have watches because these have trackers for gold and thats why they prefer walking everyday.. Then if they found area with a lot of it the church will buy the land and dig to get the golds. Then after that built a church to cover-up the mining activities..

So the church may not be paying the mafia to protect missionaries, but I had a companion from Baltimore, Maryland on my mission and some gangs would protect "the Jesus boys" on their turf because their moms taught them about Jesus when they were kids.
None of these are of any consequence. I can't help but feel like some very real issues are being avoided.
Funny story…my wife shot me in the shoulder with a 9mm during Target practice. It ripped my shirt but the garment stopped it. It was a ricochet but it was going fast enough to leave a bruise! True story!
The dead bodies myth probably comes from the fact that Mormons baptize the dead. I know that Mormons don't take a dead body and baptize it. They take a living person to act as the... body(?) to be baptized. They themselves aren't the ones being baptized, but are used as conduits to the dead. But you can see where that myth comes from at least.

In the Japanese language there are two words... Ninjin and Ningen. One means carrots, the other human. Some missionaries have made that mistake in telling the Sacred Grove event - and accidentally say that in answer to Joseph Smith's prayer 2 carrots descended from heaven. Can you guess which one is which? Ninjin = carrot and Ningen (g as in good) = humans (or beings). So I can understand why that misunderstanding might be.
Personally I never had this particular problem - but there were two words that I mixed up, so never ever asked a woman a certain question. Shufu = housewife, and Shofu (long o) = prostitute. So never asked a woman if she was a housewife, for fear that I would use the wrong word - and did not want that to happen.

I think you should make a joke about Bullet Proof. Get a Nerf Gun, fire a Nerf bullet and prove the Bullet Proof theory. You can make a huge Joke about it. Get a HIGH power Rifle with a Scope, or a Combat Rifle with a Scope. Show an image of a Marxman with HIgh power Rifle on rest. Pull Trigger and make Big Bang and lots of smoke. Then pan over to LDS, fully dressed standing, then fire a Nerf bullet and watch it bounce off. Theory proven. With the correct click bait title, Watch Bullet Proof Mormon in "Mormon Garments" be shot and see if bullet proof.

Um, hay when I first joined the church back in 1992 the discount for motel rooms was offered here in the east for temple trips. For both individuals and groups because the temple was to far away depending on which area you are in . If you lived in central Ohio at that time most members went to the D.C. temple for their endowments but after that they could choose any temple for other ordinances and still it was far until they built the Columbus temple.
