It's worth mentioning that the Namco Collections are apparently not currently compatible with the Evercade Vs as they were specifically licensed only for handheld use.
That makes no sense. Are you sure?
Both Namco collections, 1 and 2 will give you an incompatible with Evercade VS message on screen. That's with the very latest 2.0.2 update.

...That is so weird. It's like releasing a game for the Switch Lite, and not the regular Switch.
The little things, such as the fact that Joe screams out the name of a game just because it has an exclamation point at the end of it, are what make Game Sack so special to me. Only Joe has that type of sense of humor.

I love that there's easter eggs based on what carts are plugged in at the same time. Even hidden games that unlock that way
Wow, for the Bitmap Brothers games they should really have used the Amiga versions..
I'm guessing that they had to go with alternate versions because the Amiga kickstart roms are still protected and they'd have to work out some extra arrangements and fees to get the games working.

Yeah, the console ports left a bit to be desired. The Chaos Engine port on the SNES is pretty good and the Speedball 2 port for the Mega Drive was serviceable (though based on the Atari ST version), but the Mega Drive version of Xenon II was awful. It would have been nice iof it were possible to have the Amiga versions of the Sensi Soft games, too (especially Mega Lo Mania).

There is an Amiga cartridge collection on the way. Not sure how many games.

Top Gear 2 is one of my all time favorite retro games. Horizon Chase Turbo was a great modern day retake at those games.
I feel like @gamesack is really the only channel out there that is fully candid when doing reviews. Most other reviewers really gush about their review consoles and are hesitant to say anything remotely negative. Makes the @gamesack review much more valuable to me. If I'm on the fence about hardware, this is really the only channel that I totally trust to get me to the correct side of the fence. Appreciate your work!
If they haven't fixed the controls for some of these cartridges at this point, then I can't help but wonder if they ever will. They should at the very least provide the option to change the controls per game, since the option to remap the controls for the system is a start to say the least.
Anyway, thanks for making a part 3 on the Evercade now that the VS is finally released! Hopefully we will see a part 4 later down the line once we have enough new cartridges and future updates to warrant it.

When the Evercade first came out I was really hoping we'd get a few good games before it inevitably crashed, but Blaze has really made something special out of it.
The collections have been great. It introduced me to so many Euro and Indy games that I would never have played otherwise. I honestly think the Evercade may be my favorite system of this generation.

The problem I have with these is that: the config seems to be horribly done and the version of games they go with isn't the best either (awful at times).
I think the idea was more interesting than the execution of it.
Seems like another half assed product trying to get in on the retrogaming nostalgia craze.
Speaking of config, are there any ways to change the arcade game options, like difficulty, number of lives, etc.? It bugs me so much that half the arcade compilations out there simply overlook the fact that arcade games have options too.

Chain Reaction is actually the first Magical Drop game. The 2nd one has a versus mode which is a lot more fun but kinda unresponsive/choppy and the 3rd one is a masterpiece. It basically feels like the game they were trying to make with the other two. (it's also one of the few Neo Geo MVS games I own on cartridge... and Saturn disc... and digitally on Switch and Windows. I like Magical Drop III.)

Puzzle Link is a similar but different enough puzzle game. No connection to Magical Drop.

@@JazGalaxy I first started playing it when I joined a Facebook arcade high score competition group. The game has tons of hidden secrets to boost your score, really well thought out imaginative game, and challenging but fun.
Man, it's like it's a realization of what the Retro VGS should had been.

Combatribes holds a special place in my heart. It’s the real double dragon 3 as far as I’m concerned. Kishimoto was working on this which is why we got that god awful abomination instead.
I can kinda see the appeal for stuff like this. Even though you can set up a Raspberry Pi with tons of systems and thousands of games emulated almost perfectly, an out of the box solution is going to be far simpler that the many hours it requires to set up Retropie.

As a British person, it's so weird that they keep using a variety of console ports for things like Codemasters and Bitmap Brothers. A lot of them were ported from the home micros where they looked, played, and sounded best (or at least, that's where they were designed). It's not like a device like this couldn't do accurate emulation of the ST or Amiga.
Nobody wants to play awful Euro-microcomputer ports. You Brits can keep that.

@@orderofmagnitude-TPATP Why would anyone want inferior versions of already-crappy Euro games? Does anyone want to really play Dizzy games with ZX Spectrum or Atari ST graphics? With one action button and pressing up to jump? Nope.

A year late, but i do have a VS and play it every day. Find the right carts, and it'll treat you so well
I want to impulse-buy this. It's neat, and not super expensive... But the available games library seem so weak. Xeno Crisis is great, but I already own it on Dreamcast.
I've been hoping they sort out with Namco so that the Namco Collection 1 & 2 work on the VS. But since they announced they're going to stop making the Namco cartridges, it looks like they never manage to sort out whatever license issues they had.
Top Racer 2 , or Top Gear 2, has a very interesting customization mechanics for the car. I really like that series.

The map controller feature is for mapping buttons on 3rd party controllers. Playing the arcade games with a stick is where it's at! Great review!
Seeing World Rally, Racing Fever and Super Skidmarks reminds me how much I love top down and isometric racing games. Too bad my favorites (Micro Machines and Rock'n Roll Racing) aren't on Evercade VS.
Seeing super skidmarks while doing the laundry reminds your mother why she hates you.
They included the best game ever made (Frog Bog) so clearly this unit is worth picking up.

Joe you can actually use any controller on the Vs, so you could plug an arcade stick in it if you like. Maybe that will help with any controller woes you have.
What I love the most and makes me trust game sack above all other reviewers is that Joe never steered me wrong and he and I have very similar taste. Thanks for another glaring review!
Originally, Codemaster published "budget" (cheap) games, but I see some titles from other vanished publishers too ^^
And about Xenon 2 Megablast, the Amiga version is one of the most impressive game at the time, still one of my top 3 game on Amiga ^^
Codemasters seemed to have picked up the Sensible Software games at some point and they stick out like a sore thumb (because they're actually good). The Amiga and ST versions of Xenon 2 were a lot better than that abomination that was the Mega Drive port. That said, I revisited the original fairly recently and it hasn't aged very well, though it was cool as hell back in 1990.
I pre-ordered this console, I can't wait to get it, I held out on the portable console but the TV console looks like a lot of fun, I got the 130 dollar one

@@orderofmagnitude-TPATP - Well if you have it imported from the UK you have to pay international shipping, but if you order from Amazon or Best Buy you don't have to pay for shipping...as for the two bundles, the $100 comes with one game and one controller and the $130 one comes with 2 games and 2 controllers.
Hopefully some 3rd party people will make controllers for this, like a tracking ball one for the games you mentioned.
It has USB. Just Google what controller you need.

I always remembered Sensible Soccer as that one soccer game that all the British magazines praised to high heaven, while the US magazines just couldn't understand. Magazines like UK publication PC Home would say it was perfect while PC Gamer would give it a 60 or so.
I tried to like Sensible Soccer so many times because as you said it was one of the most praised games in Europe at the time but I'm not sure what they were talking about. To me all Sensible Soccer games are borderline unplayable, the same goes for the equally hyped Kick-Off games. I don't know, there must be something I do wrong. My favourite euro-soccer game is the old Microprose Soccer which is far more playable (and ironically, despite being published by an American company, was also developed by Sensible Software)
@@amerigocosta7452 Hard disagree: For me Sensible Soccer was by far the best football game I played until International Superstar Soccer was released. Kick Off was good when it was originally released, though it quickly became dated.

I like the choices Blaze made with most of the cartridges I picked up. I’m looking forward to the next collections. I really hope they get more from the ps1 generation. The handheld is cool but I think I’ll enjoy the console more.

Yeah, I kind of agree. Part of me thinks it's a really cool console, but fact is, this thing's simply redundant.
Jeff Bezos' going to the moon and his 450 million dollar yacht is that for me. If this has rom loader capabilities, I think it's pretty harmless. The scrolling kinda stinks but the video output appears to be excellent in pixel perfect mode.

Before watching this, I honestly thought it was going to be Joe vs. The evercade. I didn't know how or why, buti knew I wanted to watch. Turns out it's just part of the console name, still a great episode. Love the end skit as always! And yes, I yelled that.
I think the issues with the button layout is that growing up, most games here (UK) had jump on the right button. (C on the Mega Drive)
Most of the controller's that I have tried have been recognised and work immediately. Including the PlayStation classic controller and the Hori Xbox Series fighting stick. What doesn't work is the the Halo 20th anniversary Duke controller.
I prefer JUMP on C for Mega Drive as well. But for the diamond configuration layout, I prefer the bottom button be jump and the left button be the most-used action. Like Mario World or ActRaiser or Contra etc etc. The reason is that the thumb rests easier on those two buttons than the bottom button and the right button.
@@GameSack I never really liked the SNES, so apart from Street Fighter or Mario Kart I didn't get a lot of time with that diamond configuration.
But I do recall for some bizarre reason during the mid 2000's the the top button (Y or triangle) was used for jump with the bottom button (A or cross) being used for either attack or context sensitive button, depending on the game.
That was awkward.

I have it and XenoCrisis is RAD. Tanzer on the Mega Cat collection one is also great.
I'm still hyped for this thing and can't wait for my preorder to arrive at the end of the month! The controls issue certainly is concerning and if they haven't fixed it yet you wonder if they ever will. None the less I really hope this thing does do well. I'd love to see more and more developers/publishers license out older titles from the likes of Capcom and Konami to this thing. I'd also love to see more indie developers port their titles to it. We'll see. I love this show and I do appreciate the negative take on this console. Up until now just about everyone else I've watched just gushes over this thing.
Thank you for warning me about the button mappings a long time ago. I was seriously considering picking up the portable Evercade until I found this out.
It's such a simple thing to implement and fix too. It proves that they don't care and are just trying to cash in on nostalgia. If they don't care, why should I? This thing won't last past next year. You can buy a cheap Android device for less than half the money with infinite games.

mania challenge was the sequel to mat mania. mat mania was great in the arcade at the time. it actually had a ton of moves...pro-wrestling on the nes was very similar and felt like a stripped down version of this. patman qc has a great review of mat mania

Apparently the developers of the system mentioned if you put certain combinations of two cartridges into the system you will access extra/secret games, no idea what they are though.
I've found two so far. Putting in Atari Collection 1&2 unlocks Dark Chambers for the 7800. Putting in PIKO 1&2 unlocks Pyramids of Ra.
Oh, and entering seijiwashere at the secret menu brings up Kubo 1&2.

@@tribemaster101 I'm sitting here next to a 10 TB hard drive full of ROMs. Even still, I've got a VS. Try to explain to your mom how to setup Retroarch. This is much easier.

@@tribemaster101 Then maintain it for them. Then support them when something goes wrong. Then deal with their frustration when windows wants to update randomly. Doing this stuff on a PC isn't simple for everyone. Best to understand that not everyone wants or needs a PC. Even EmuELEC boxes can end up being too complicated when stuff goes wrong. When you have to do tech support for the entirety of your family, you realize that keeping things dead simple for some of them is the right way to go. Hence, stuff like the VS or mini systems work out great for that.
See the button thing kills it for me Joe.. it makes the entire thing not even an option, and why I decided against the handheld with premium bundle. This is so crucial and I don't understand how it's even a problem still, years after Evercade was formed. I think they might not be all there mentally if they just don't get it. Too many games affected for me to ever bother with this.

Just got the Evercade VS today. It's pretty cool. I like Tumblepop, Wizard Fire, The Combatribes, Sly Spy, but my favorite one by far is Chain Reaction. That game is dangerously addicting.

To this day Worms 2 is one of my favorite games in the series series and I still can't figure out why it seems to never be included in any of the Worms collections out there.
I think that's because it is a Windows PC only entry, very challenging a legally tricky to be emulated and included in a compilation aimed at console gamers. One of the reasons these collections only go for console versions of the included games is that there is no need to license bios/firmware/OS and whatnot.
