I honestly wasn't sold on the handheld because i wasn't impressed by the screen size, screen aspect ratio, screen quality, and initial software selection, but it seems like this console and the current software selection might just have convinced me to pull the trigger.

Real games? Not really. Dumping roms from a cartridge to play them on emulators is not like the Real console hw experience. Just a waste of resources. Its funny that mjr makes a shitty Video about the amazing MiSTer but praises this crap.

That's about the same as shouting "RASPBERRY PI" when the Nintendo Classic Edition consoles were released. MJR laid out the appeal of the Evercade in this video and the emulation isn't bad at all.
They hit the nail on the head with the collectable side. For me, when you buy a cartridge, you actually play it rather than downloading full roms set with 1000's of games and then never play them. Got the Founders Edition and can't wait for the Bitmap collection.
The cartridge idea is what drew me to the original handheld. I own every cartridge they have and on preorder. I ordered the founder’s edition VS console and am very excited to receive it. I will continue buying their cartridges to keep my collection complete. Evercade hit a home run IMO.
Yeah that would be cool. WB apparently likes to sit on those properties however. Other than the Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection and Midway Arcade Origins, I don't believe they have really messed with that.
That "in the interest of full disclosure" opener sounded a little bit like Lon Seidman, and I love it! His transparency is something everyone should aspire to, and I know he mentions your channel pretty often too when talking about retro gaming. I love to see the overlap!

If you have the handheld and have the carts, this is an obvious buy. Starting with it home only is great for people getting started in this stuff. In my case I have over 400 retro games, and had pre-ordered a Polymega...yeah, it's a heck of a lot more expensive, but with the fact that I am getting it already, this isn't a console I see a need for myself for. If that didn't exist - I would be all over this.

Yes agreed. Would be awesome if that was built on the console, but you can a HDMI to s-video converter. I use that with my TurboGrafx 16 mini on my Sony CRT and it looks and plays great as if it was an original TG16 console

Just picked one up today. Very impressed so far, love the dual cartridge feature. Unlocking 7 free games is pretty neat too. Just wish I could play Capcom on here with my Astro City Arcade stick (yes it actually works with a bit of effort!).
I am a big Evercade fan, even though at first I was sceptical too. It's the combination of indie/homebrew and rarer retro titles that make it appealing. The collector in me does love seeing all those carts. I pre-ordered a Founders VS System (in black) to match my black limited edition handheld. One thing you didn't mention in the video - the Evercade handheld can be used as a controller too, using a link cable (there is one in the Founders box, and also available separately). And according to Evercade's social media accounts, putting in certain combinations of two cartridges will unlock something extra - much like the old Konami carts for the MSX where you could unlock stuff, or the Sonic & Knuckles lock-on tech. Can't wait to try that out...
I came a little late to the game with the handheld but now have all the carts and have ordered the VS Founder Edition. I think MJR's review highlights what really impresses me about this project - the little things. While it looks like you are just paying to play licensed copies of games you can emulate anywhere, you get so many smart out-of-the-box features like scanlines, aspect ratio selection, bezels, quick access to save states, carry saves between devices, ability to use different controllers, re-mapping controllers. Very well-thought out product and at $100 it's almost an impulse buy...for collector-types anyway.
I found out about the original Evercade last year at PAX. I got one from my Reddit Secret Santa, and I love it. I've collected all the cartridges, and I'm using the system as part of my nightly game streams. I'm drumming up support for the Extra Life 24-hour gaming marathon for children's hospitals by playing an hour of retro games a night!
We have been told hidden games etc. We also get bonus games but putting certain carts in together. And supposedly they will be adding more secrets with console patch updates in the future.
I wasn't keen on the handheld, but I bought the Premium bundle last week and found I liked it so much, I ran out and bought a couple more cartridges. Sure I guess if you put in a lot of time and effort you could achieve much the same with a Retro-pie, but I like the convenience of this. It really is put together in a slick, smoothly-operating manner.
This looks awesome. I already have a RPi, but the look of this system, the cartridges you can collect, the nice game boxes. Id love to buy one of these.
I had ordered the Founders Edition and I'm very excited to do my own unboxing! Although I do hope they get the Namco cartridges sorted out. I get that they don't wanna pay extra to license those cartridges on the VS. But since it was included in the UK handheld package, and especially since it doesn't display an error message when inserted. I think the confusion about it may well be pretty bad. With that said, they've got alot of great cartridges out (twenty plus) and more on the way to play!
We thought this was a great point from MJR and we are implementing this right now for day 1 patch :) also fwiw we are still in process of trying to sort it out. Look forward to seeing your video!
This console seems underrated. It would be cool if this console got more support, would be great to play Sega, Capcom and/or Neo Geo games on this device.
I really like the Evercade project, but the labels are all over the place 2:58 some left some right most of them not centered. I really hate that so much... Cannot be that hard to make a unified box, can it?
That would be great but I would think the licence would be a problem. Either expired or to expensive. Would love turtles tournament fighters and turtles in time
I gifted myself for Christmas the console pack with the Data East and Technos cartridges for $130. And I'm very satisfied. Much so that I just ordered the Irem cartridge through Best Buy. The cartridges at $19.99 to $29.99 aren't expensive and are very compact plus they benefit from the double slot on the console. Originally I wanted to buy one of those emulator consoles with 1k+ games but I became very wary due to complaints about things like delivery and some of the emulation software not working properly. This is a fine middle ground between free emulation software on PCs and retro consoles such as the TurboGrafx 16 mini that come packed with games but unless they are able to be upgraded that's all you're getting. Edit: as of this writing Blaze is going to release an indie game cartridge this month plus about 10 more cartridges but I have no idea what games are they going to have. I'm looking forward to them.
As someone who was feeling left out by the handheld due to a disability. I am very interested in this. Since I think I will be able to manage that controller with my one hand.
I'm very happy with my Evercade handheld and am eager to get the VS. Blaze has done everything right and they seem to truly be proud of what they have created. You can also tell they are retro game lovers themselves.
I'm mildly intrested in the evercade but i have not jumped in yet. Mostly becouse i use my switch away from home and PC at home. would get the handheld and a couple games i am intrested in, not collect em all.
Was kinda against this then i picked it up on an amazon sale and i was wrong. I love the handheld but the system is just so cool. Unlockable games, secret gamea when pairing certain carts, game of the month, multiplayer, just so much fun.
You don't happen to have the new Atari VCS Classic Controller do you, Metal Jesus? If so, any chance it works on the Evercade VS? Watching you play Warlords and seeing Pong in their list makes me think compatibility with the Atari VCS Classic would be a huge win. (and don't think I'm not eyeing Night Driver on that Evercade cartridge with enthusiasm)

I wonder why nintendo didn't make a console-style switch, as they made an "only portable" version of it, it could make sense that they would make an "only tv" version that would benifit from not having to worry about the battery over charging

I follow all these retro systems mainly for the train crashes they usually are (coleco chameleon anyone?). This peeks my interest, a genuine system pried very fairly and it just works. Great review Jason, TY.
Supposedly they are in talks with other arcade publishers that made 4 player games (Konami comes to mind) to bring their titles to the EC. Would be cool to play x-men, tmnt, simpsons in 4 player mode. As for scanlines, I dont know why every device that simulates scanlines has to make the image darker. If it can insert the scanlines while maintaining the same brightness... that would be sweet. I hate having to up the brightness of my set to play using them. I love my evercade and cant wait to get the founder edition. It would be cool to get a colecovision cart

Are all of the Evercade carts still available or are some of them hard to find already? I don't want to start collecting them and find that I'm paying inflated prices on the secondary market.
anyone really has to ask the question why buy this over an emulator, will never understand why we would want it. It's simple. Retro enthusiast's. Physical cartridges. Having a manual and looking through all the pages, and smelling the book for the first time. Popping in a game, and displaying the cases on a shelf. Physically preserving history. It gives us old people an overdose of dopamine, and makes us feel like we are five years old again for a few hours.
I received a handheld for my birthday a year ago. Honestly, as a collector, it is kind of awesome. I may have to pickup the console when I get the chance. My main hope is that we might get to see some old PAL exclusives.
Still no Amiga collection cart though :( I've been waiting for them to release a cart with some of the best Amiga games from the Amiga500/1200/CD32, also this console version would have been 1000x better with an analogue output in the form of RGB Scart/VGA.
New to retro gaming. I still have my old N64, game gear and GB colour. I don't play any modern consoles so not very good with hardware etc. Will this machine work in the UK?
Looks interesting. Was considering getting one of these for the living room for something my nieces could play when they come over. Seems like a good thing to have in a living room outside of the main game room for recreational fun or if you have family or non-gamers over.

The custom controller feature, aside your gamepads is 100% there for people with arcade sticks. Most PS3 sticks show up as generic controllers over USB as maybe PS4 ones and such.
The secret code menu made me raise my eyebrow for sure. They could let you do so some fun things like a boss rush or bonus challenges. It has some potential there
Somehow there is already an EverSD cart to play back ups, add roms and emulators and most importantly, patch the Namco carts to allow them to be played on the VS
I habe the Evercade with the first 20 cartridges. Also have the Vs premium pack paid for and pre ordered. Alot of people dont understand this device but i think its awesome. Buzzing fornthe VS to get released.
Nice to see that this ended up as such a nice little system. While I could easily emulate most of these on one of my current machines, this seems to be such a nice, compact and easy to use 'under the TV' style solution that it seems like a very tempting proposition. Sure, it's no PS5 - but then it costs less than half the price of a PS5 (or less than 1/4 when allowing for scalping).

I really like the handheld. Some of these older games (particularly the Lynx games) just don't good blown up on a big HDTV

I think this would be a great console for younger kids. These retro games are much easier to play and $130 is much cheaper entry point for parents.

A DAC’s (digital to analog converter) not so expensive nowadays. I have one, i can play my PS4 on CRT.

It would be kind of neat if it continued the "Vs" theme by allowing two games to be played at once side by side (on a widescreen TV).

The Secret thing is if you have 2 carts in, you can unlock an extra game with certain combos I believe

I'm very happy with my Evercade handheld and am eager to get the VS. Blaze has done everything right and they seem to truly be proud of what they have created. You can also tell they are retro game lovers themselves.

I'm mildly intrested in the evercade but i have not jumped in yet. Mostly becouse i use my switch away from home and PC at home. would get the handheld and a couple games i am intrested in, not collect em all.

Was kinda against this then i picked it up on an amazon sale and i was wrong. I love the handheld but the system is just so cool. Unlockable games, secret gamea when pairing certain carts, game of the month, multiplayer, just so much fun.
You don't happen to have the new Atari VCS Classic Controller do you, Metal Jesus? If so, any chance it works on the Evercade VS? Watching you play Warlords and seeing Pong in their list makes me think compatibility with the Atari VCS Classic would be a huge win.
(and don't think I'm not eyeing Night Driver on that Evercade cartridge with enthusiasm)

@@sakku911 I live in Germany and my Amazon pre-order ist still set for December 16th. And even if this should get delayed too, that´s not the end of world and I wait for it.
I just wish those select screens would be more retro (chunky pixel fonts etc.) to keep the illusion it's the original thing.
It would be cool to see a dreamcast or GameCube mini at this point. Maybe they arent old enough yet but id be interested

I wonder why nintendo didn't make a console-style switch, as they made an "only portable" version of it, it could make sense that they would make an "only tv" version that would benifit from not having to worry about the battery over charging

I follow all these retro systems mainly for the train crashes they usually are (coleco chameleon anyone?). This peeks my interest, a genuine system pried very fairly and it just works. Great review Jason, TY.

Supposedly they are in talks with other arcade publishers that made 4 player games (Konami comes to mind) to bring their titles to the EC. Would be cool to play x-men, tmnt, simpsons in 4 player mode. As for scanlines, I dont know why every device that simulates scanlines has to make the image darker. If it can insert the scanlines while maintaining the same brightness... that would be sweet. I hate having to up the brightness of my set to play using them. I love my evercade and cant wait to get the founder edition. It would be cool to get a colecovision cart
If they bring in the TMNT arcade games, that is a Day One Buy for me.

Are all of the Evercade carts still available or are some of them hard to find already? I don't want to start collecting them and find that I'm paying inflated prices on the secondary market.
anyone really has to ask the question why buy this over an emulator, will never understand why we would want it. It's simple. Retro enthusiast's. Physical cartridges. Having a manual and looking through all the pages, and smelling the book for the first time. Popping in a game, and displaying the cases on a shelf. Physically preserving history. It gives us old people an overdose of dopamine, and makes us feel like we are five years old again for a few hours.

What's the difference between the arcade versions and the... other versions?

I received a handheld for my birthday a year ago. Honestly, as a collector, it is kind of awesome. I may have to pickup the console when I get the chance. My main hope is that we might get to see some old PAL exclusives.

Still no Amiga collection cart though :( I've been waiting for them to release a cart with some of the best Amiga games from the Amiga500/1200/CD32, also this console version would have been 1000x better with an analogue output in the form of RGB Scart/VGA.

New to retro gaming. I still have my old N64, game gear and GB colour. I don't play any modern consoles so not very good with hardware etc. Will this machine work in the UK?
Looks interesting. Was considering getting one of these for the living room for something my nieces could play when they come over. Seems like a good thing to have in a living room outside of the main game room for recreational fun or if you have family or non-gamers over.

I'd jump on this if online multiplayer was added in a firmware update. While it's 100 bucks in the US it's a bit more expensive in the UK.

I love the evercade idea, I'm just worried about the carts lifespan, they look so cheap. Hope I'm wrong.
The custom controller feature, aside your gamepads is 100% there for people with arcade sticks. Most PS3 sticks show up as generic controllers over USB as maybe PS4 ones and such.

The secret code menu made me raise my eyebrow for sure. They could let you do so some fun things like a boss rush or bonus challenges. It has some potential there

Somehow there is already an EverSD cart to play back ups, add roms and emulators and most importantly, patch the Namco carts to allow them to be played on the VS

It ran the PS1 game Speed Ball 2100 just fine, and that's full 3D, so I think it would do up to the PlayStation generation just fine.
Nice to see that this ended up as such a nice little system. While I could easily emulate most of these on one of my current machines, this seems to be such a nice, compact and easy to use 'under the TV' style solution that it seems like a very tempting proposition. Sure, it's no PS5 - but then it costs less than half the price of a PS5 (or less than 1/4 when allowing for scalping).
I love the handheld and definitely getting this console too! It's just awesome!
