Driver Parallel Lines. It’s a really good game that fixed most of the issues of Driver 3. But, the fact it’s open world with half of the game is set in the 70’s and the other half in present day (in 2006) with all the building and vehicle changes (and this was the PS2 generation) is quite impressive

Midnight Resistance has one of the most pumping FM tunes on the Genesis. Fittingly called "Flood of Power".

Shadow of the Ninja rocks! I rented that so many times back in the day. I love how there's unique enemies in every stage.
I would reccomend cyber-shadow if you like these types of games.

Shadow of the Ninja was a game I actually grew up with. I played it for 3 years before I realized you could sacrifice some of your life to summon a lightning strike by pressing and holding B for a few seconds. In case you didn’t know Joe since I don’t think it’s in the instruction book. Definitely helps with the bosses.
The thing about Shadow of the Ninja is we always knew of its existence from magazines, but it seems every game store and rental place in town refused to carry it. Probably due to a mixture of both the fact that it wasn't that common a title and just bad luck. Didn't get to play it until we picked up a used copy in I think 1998 or 1999. My brother and I had a blast for a few solid days learning the game together and finishing it. Felt like the classic 2-player NES game that we should have grown up with.

Data East and Opera House worked the same magic with Captain America and the Avengers when they ported it to the Genesis. It has some of the best tunes you'll hear on the system.
I love Rage Racer, and the words "Gentlemen, start your engines and let's get it on." in that seductive anouncer voice will forever be engrained in my memory. XD
My favorite part of the week is enjoying some gamesack while adding to the list of games I want to play on the mister :) I love the part where the music turns up when you adjust the knob on the genesis! So much effort into the editing.
Oh my god, I can't even begin to imagine how long that stop motion skit took, brilliant stuff. :')
(Speaking of criminally overlooked, 'Transparent Obstacle' from Gauntlet IV is absolutely one of the best tunes on the Genesis/Mega Drive)
Is there a reason why gauntlet iv was rejected in the skit? It’s not a great game? It’s so good it’s like it’s on the super powerful turbografx?

Love seeing another big Ridge Racer fan. I've been a huge fan of the series since the PS1 first launched & bought every single Ridge Racer game on it's launch day ever since. It's always been my favorite racing series by far & I really wish it would make a comeback!
Been using Gamesack for almost a decade. In a lame mood or just need a nostalgia hit. Gamesack. Perfect for a Sunday binge. I remember most of the 8 and 16 bit games. Where I was and what year the games came out. Super nostalgia for me. My fav UA-cam channel.

Wasn't Spike McFang a vampire? Hence the magic, the cape, the bats, and so many enemies being bunches of garlic. He drank tomato sauce instead of blood, which is why your life bar/health potions are tomatoes.

I’m guessing Joe was joking about Spike McFang’s occupation. He is indeed a vampire and the game is a sequel to Makai Prince Dorabocchan for PC Engine, which is a pretty cool side-scrolling action game.

I loved Rage Racer, that was my first racing game on the PlayStation and still to this day my favourite. It has these strange darker tones alongside the Namco magic of that era

Criminally under rated... I played it more than all the other ridge racer games. Had so much more depth to it!
I wanna play it, my only experience is it's bangin' ass music. Disco ball is a fav in later ridge racers for me

@@TiNRiB really? R4 was the best racing game of that era by leaps and bounds, to me. I feel like r4 did things that no other racer has topped.
Interestingly Midnight Resistance was quite popular in Europe thanks to the ports for practically every micro computer available in 1989. Some are very impressive given the capability of the systems, especially the one for the ZX Spectrum.
I played the hell out of it on the Amiga 500 back in the day.

These subtitles on the rage racer had me laughing by myself and my wife giving me a weird look. Love it.
I gotta say...Aside from everything else that's obviously great about Gamesack, one thing I love and appreciate, is the dry humor - the the jokes that are randomly thrown into the commentary. "Everyone loves a good three way!" Then Joe just continues on like nothing happend.
This is one of the best episodes in a while. Rage Racer is one of my all time favorites, and you can even play the OST in your own car! It's also the only game I've ever known to play a wind rush sound when you get close to the walls at high speeds.
Yeah Joe did a great job on this one in particular!

Its also using the in-game music which titled "Sortie", which quite fitting name for the skit theme.
I watch this as I am 8 beers deep . I will forget all about these games in the morning , but I love them for now .

Midnight Resistance is pretty well known in Europe. It was even a pack-in game for the C64 at one point. On that topic, the C64 port has a really good version of the soundtrack, which is worth a listen.
It was also highly rated on Spectrum in Europe.
And Rage Racer was the first game I ever played on the PlayStation 1. Although it was on a demo disc. "Racers. Start your engines and let's get it on!"

The music playing at 10:17 sure sounds like U2 City of Blinding Lights intro! The music is from 2004, so maybe U2 got some inspiration from it.
Space Harrier
Great games Joe and great episode thanks. Midnight Resistance was pretty well known in the UK thanks to some stellar home computer ports - Amiga, C64 even Spectrum. It was one of the first Genesis games I sought out due to this when I started a Genesis collection in 2019.
I loved the speccy version. Great port
Rage Racer is one of my all time favorite retro racers! such a great game that I played for HOURS!
Great video and good game recommendations but one thing: Spike McFang is a vampire, now a magician. That's why enemies have cloves of garlic for life and the main character had tomatoes (because tomato juice instead of blood).
Well, since the end skit involved a Gauntlet game, I'll say Gauntlet: Dark Legacy, that game is simply massive and tons of fun even if you play solo. The Gamecube port is the definitive version so I recommend that being the one to look for. Barring that, the OG Xbox port also works fine, the PS2 version is inferior to both.

One exception to the soundtrack on Shadow of the Ninja, there is one part of the ending music is an ear worm that will be stuck in your head for days if not weeks.

I actually really like the flame spell sound. It's very much a product of it's time and I love it. One of my favorite things in mystic defender.

Great video, Joe! There’s a spreadshot-type ability in the Nintendo DS game Monster Tale called “Resistance of Midnight,” and I always wondered if it was a reference to Midnight Resistance’s, er, three-way.
Dude! In shadow of the ninja, it gets MUCH easier if you only pick up ONE type of weapon. You mentioned a slightly longer katana, but you can level ALL main weapons 3 times. Makes the game a lot easier with the extra range.
4d boxing was hilarious and quite good fun, especially if you want to get an over powered boxer against a weedy opponent.
Indy 500 was also good from that era, although mainly when you turn you car around and race head on into traffic causing huge crashes.
EnviroBear 2000 was another funny game to play with a friend, especially if you'd had a beer or two.
Really Glad Rage Racer and Spike Mcfang got some love,. All your Gijoe references were well appreciated thanks for that.
4:20 - Just wanna point out that Spike here is actually a demon prince of the vampire variety - albeit one who loves tomatoes instead of blood. In fact, this game is actually a SEQUEL to a Japan-only PC-Engine game called "Makai Prince Dorabocchan," which is a 2D platformer with a goofy sense of humor.
But yeah, I'm glad you covered this game, Joe! I had a lot of fun with Spike McFang years ago, and it somehow continues to be this hidden gem on the SNES to this very day.

Wirehead. 100% overlooked since nobody talks about it ever, but it's one of the most enjoyable fmv games. I had a great time playing this one with a friend of mine. Everyone should try it. The humor in that game is really something.

Mystic Defender’s soundtrack has some of the best Genesis tunes ever imo. The early sound driver just hits so different from how later games would progress.

Mystic Defender was highly advertised when the Mega Drive launched around these parts, along with Truxton, Last Battle, Ghouls & Ghosts and Rambo 3.

Glad to see Shadow of the Ninja/Blue Shadow get some recognition. It's a nice game, and I absolutely love the ending tune.
I guess one game I rarely see anyone mention is Firepower 2000/Super SWIV. It's not revolutionary, but it's a good shoot'em up with a great intro tune and good sound design.

Shadow of the Ninja was also known as Blue Shadow, Blue Shadow was my favourite game for the NES. I still go back to it sometimes today.
I don't even want to know how much time it took for you to do your stop motion post video scenes, but thanks for putting the effort to doing it. They're always fun to watch
