In the 90's through early 00's Japanese games released in South Korea (especially in the arcade) were heavily censored on Japanese language content and imagery. Best example I can give is Street Fighter Alpha 3. Load up the ASIA region arcade version and you'll start to notice things right away. There's also the fact that Japanese companies couldn't even release their own games and systems in Korea without going through another company like Samsung (Mega Drive and Saturn for example).
Yeah, I remember visiting my cousins in South Korea in 1987 and being comforted that they have an NES too! Later in life when I discovered the Famicom, I started to wonder "wait, wouldn't they release the Famicom in Korea versus the NES?", and that let me down a huge rabbit hole about how Japanese merchandise was banned in South Korea until like 2000 (and as late as 2006) and therefore Korean companies would skirt around those laws by importing AMERICAN versions. Samsung/Hyundai: _"Yeah is says 'Nintendo' on it, but we're importing it from 'Nintendo of America', which is an American company, not a Japanese one, and therefore it doesn't count against the ban!"_ ROK Gov't: _"Sounds legit."_
Oh, yeah, like SoulCalibur replacing Mitsurugi with Arthur (who started as little more than a texture replacement, but later ended up becoming his own character with a unique backstory, IIRC).
I don’t know if anyone has said this in the last year or two… But thank you Joe! Thank you for continuing to do this show at the same level of quality, consistency and format that you guy(s) have done for years - even if UA-cam sucks now and it’s resulted in slow growth, etc. There are tens of thousands of us out there that have watched since the early days, after the departure of Dave (though it’s awesome seeing him every now and again when he does do a show!) and amidst UA-cams blatant disregard for genuinely talented creators. Keep doing what you do man. And we’ll always keep watching and supporting!
ESWAT is yet another example of a game that could be a lot better with some very minor tweaks. This is what the hacking community was made for! Someone go into the code & slow the jetpack down!
@@Boss-Bot Ah very true! I wonder if it could be slowed down via Game Genie code. It can do a lot of things but not everything unfortunately. Now if we had unlimited code lines in the Game Genie...
Pandemonium on the Saturn is another one where the Japanese version is very different. It's called Magical Hoppers and features different characters that even have slightly different attacks. It also has a traditional anime intro instead of the 3d polygon rendered intro of the US version.
The Playstation also got Magical Hoppers instead of Pandemonium, I own both versions. The Saturn version has brighter colors but worse textures and more slowdown. Supposedly, both versions have less slowdown than Pandemonium, but I'm only going off what I heard there, since I only own the Japanese version of both.
@@ShadoMoosess SOR3's music was good. It just wasn't pop music. It sounded more like the modern era Synthwave & EBSM, than the New Jack Swing pop that SOR1 & 2 had.

CPS1 Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition. Name changes were not the only thing adjusted. USA came out first and then Japan released it later with a few balance changes. Boxer: Dash Straight can hit crouching opponents, has a smoother crouch animation and his Turn Around Punch gains more power for longer charge. Claw: Rolling Crystal Flash MP and HP were adjusted. Sagat; Tiger Uppercut MP and HP versions can knock down grounded oppobents. Dictator: Psycho Crusher hits less against blocking opponents (less chip dmg). Ken: Rear side of Tatsu pushes opponents away and not sucked in (so less dmg). Zangief: Spinning Piledriver dishes out more damage for a 3 hit KO instead of a 4 hit KO. Lastly the 99 second timer clocks down to 00 faster in the Japanese release.
Shinobi on the arcade has a very satisfying _feel_ to it: the running, the jumping, and *especially* when enemies are hit by shurikens. There's something to the graphics plus audio that make everything about it feel punchy and weighty. I've never seen another game rival its "texture," but seeing E-SWAT for the first time: it came 95% close.

The US version of Metal Storm doesn't have the intro because it actually came out first - the JP release came out a year later and the changes were made on top of the prior release. The recent retrobit re-release allows you to swap the direction you have to hold to flip gravity and includes all the additions, complete with english translation. It's pretty cool and worth picking up if you can find it.
I think that was one of my favourite Gamesack outros ever 😂 Regional differences: The Xbox version of Outrun 2's got graphically superior and more arcade accurate versions of the Daytona USA 2 and Scud Race bonus tracks in Japan than in the west. Also, the JPN version was tougher, because it got rid of the code input system you use to cheat and unlock stuff in the west.

This is easily my favorite channel. Like.. hands down nothing comes close. Thank you so much for the years of great content. Time Killers, NARC, Weapon Lord (such a fucking AWESOME game with online SNES multiplayer!), Mortal Kombat, Splatterhouse, Battletoads Arcade, etc.
The discussion of difficulty just reminds me how we have been taught by modern video games that there's always an "easy mode." And with the success of Elden Ring maybe we are moving back towards that experience of difficulty being a core concept of the game that is to be embraced rather than avoided.
When Joe mentioned how long ago it was since the first regional differences I was a bit shocked. I've been watching for that long. I guess since Joe continues to make a good show, you don't notice. Good job Joe!
