Riot is sampled from a song by Earl's uncle Hugh who also passed away this year, he alludes to him on Peanut. Think it was meant as a cathartic release and homage

BlacKyd I’m sure he’s not comparing lmao the album isn’t the greatest only the hardcore earl fans think this album is very good it’s bad to be honest it’s like an abstract painting that you have to be in the same mind space of the artist to understand it and find the beauty in it. The album doesn’t appeal to the mainstream nor should it, there are albums that do that like KOD, TABOO, and DiCaprio 2 all do this well but Earl took some very out there beats and put some personal lyrics in it and released it.
@@keithwhitson6597 Damn didn't know most people thought this was one of Earls worst albums. I fucking love pretty much every song on it. "Some rap songs" feels more like an abstract art piece experience showing the steady decline of Earl's mental health and battle with depression through music more than it is an album. Sonically, the glitchy, minimalistic production feels like it's a representation of his sporadic thoughts, sounding as distorted and turbulent as his deteriorating mental state; and as the album progresses, the more muddy and chaotic the instrumentals become -- mirroring his mental downward spiral. I feel like this album will spit Earls fanbase in half. The people who were expecting old Earl from 3 1/2 years ago are most likely going to be disappointed and those who were watching him grow and change will be ok and or love it. Also the best selection are definitely an acquired taste, this type of experimental beats aren't for everyone. In all honesty I love these type of beats. That plus Earl rapping over them just makes the album all so much better for me. But definitely and acquired taste for this one.
I agree with you there.for me I don’t like like the off beat tones of this but I think think the lyrics and what earls saying is great though. I also think it can be a bit hard to listen to and understand just because sometimes the music is overpowering his voice
Artistically, as in just a form of expression. This album is beautiful. Earl’s lyricism, flow and cold delivery over these very dirty, raw and glitchy beats. Like everything in this album is a pure sonic representation of his mental state. Like he’s very depressed, just out of touch with everything in his life including himself to the point of him of just being in the border of insanity. This album works as a form of art and that alone.... NOW if you’re looking as an album to be entertained or hear Earl just Spit Crazy bars than this is album is not for you. As a matter fact this album is not looking to please ANYBODY and Earl is clearly aware of it. This is an album worth looking at as not only an important point in Earl’s life of where he is physically and mentally. It’s also an important album when it comes to talking about Mental Health in Hip Hop.
Your forcing yourself to like this album it seems . That long explanation explains it. Yeah depressing is real but that dont excuse the off beatness of his lyrics and the beats being all over the place. They sound like Rza throwaway unfinished production from 93
I think people are too used to trap music nowadays that this album just comes off as jarring because it sounds more raw, like hip hop used to be... The aesthetic and structure of these songs are some of the most unique I’ve ever heard in rap. If this came out 10 years ago this album would be praised as a classic.
random whitekid Except it didn’t come out 10 years ago. We’re in 2018 I don’t want to hear such shitty quality that takes so much from the songs sonically.
I don’t have time to respond to all of ya’ll since the internet is so wild I’d be at that forever. 1). I’m fully aware this album is getting praised regardless, it’s just that I believe its being a tad bit under-appreciated right now. 2). Just because it’s 2018 don’t mean a goddamn thing, music has no boundaries and just because the tone of a song is odd or not normally produced don’t mean it’s bad... 3). This a UA-cam comment section about a fucking artist and his latest release. I’m not defending earl to death or nothing, I’m just a fan speculating his opinions, so shut the fuck up, either join the discussion or don’t.
It's not supposed to be hype or excited this is pure artistry and poetry each track his tone everything about on this album fits his mood this isn't something you bump to to get hyped
Yeah earl has always worn his MF DOOM inspiration on his sleeve but now it's more obvious than ever. Still great though, he takes doom's style in a much more experimental way
Had this shit on repeat since it came out last night and God damn it's incredible. The production to me is incredible. Grainy and dusty samples that have been manipulated to perfectly to convey the emotions that Earl spits in his bars. While the flows aren't anything crazy or technical he spits what the tracks need to create this hazy, dark, yet bright and beautiful mood. There isn't a single bad track in my eyes and even Red Water which is just a looped old 8 bars says a lot to me artistically and highlights some of the important topics of this record. The lyrics are a huge step up from what came before (most likely since Earl is older now and has more to talk about, along with the events that have happened in his life) and there isn't a bad or corny bar in here. It's short and direct to the point but there's so fucking much that with every listen it just gets better. Ngl it's gonna be one of the best of the year along with KSG in my eyes. 9.5/10
I was kinda weirded out by the album at first but it grows heavily on me. To everyone saying its trash give it a few more honest shots. The thing is only 25 minutes long and I bet you dont have anything better to do so put this on repeat and you might get some enjoyment too.
This album hit me hard... This project has made me feel a way that I haven't felt since Faces. I want to live in this album forever. It is an encasing of emotion and hardships and takes me somewhere else for 24 minutes. Project of the year, *hands down*
The more I listen to this album the more I like the album. I just wanted some of the songs he did live on the album so hopefully he puts those on his next one. Earl will always have his fans wanting more but having as content at the same time. This album def going be on repeat for the rest of the year
Shawn please understand, I don’t think this album is meant to possess replay value and Earl knows that. With Earl’s father passing away his depression, drug use, loneliness and suicidal thoughts - this is album gives us a feeling what it is to experience all and still be existing. The album sonically feels all over that place because that’s the whole point - it represents his state of mind over the last 3 years. The use of old soul and jazz samples (with distorted mixing) adds beautifully to Earl’s attempt to find his roots and his place in the world. It’s a culmination of abstract ideas and feelings. Just like all of us.
The reason Shawn brings up the replay value of an album is because that plays into how you receive it. Can you really say you loved an album if you only listen to it once ever? Personally, I don't think so. A truly great album has you revisiting it due to its enjoyment factor.
Zuri Fair enough, I completely get your point. But this is a different kind of artistic expression. Just because an album does not have replay value doesn’t mean it’s not a great piece of music. I mean I can’t even look at this album cover for too long otherwise I start getting a headache. It’s meant to be repulsive and abstract.
@@Zuri_SM Yea but there are different forms of enjoyment. I don't like SRS cuz it's pleasant, i do because it's potent. Enjoyment isn't some one dimensional reaction man. I love this album cause it's powerful, raw, rough, and personal. I gave it 3 listens, and it's killed my mood for the rest of the day basically. I probably won't revisit it for a few days, but that doesn't mean I appreciate it any less.
@@dlboss77 I never said an album has to be listened to nonstop to be enjoyable/have replay value. You will revisit it in a few days even after listening to it 3 times already. To me, that is a solid amount of replay value. Clearly the project has stuff for you to come back and delve into.
@@Zuri_SM I never said you said that an album needs to be listened to nonstop to have replay value. I was saying that an album doesn't need replay value to be enjoyed or great. Music is art, and the best art has context. The context of this album is depressing, cold, and claustrophobic. No shit it's not gonna have replay value. It's not trying to be catchy, it's amazing for what it is.
This album is great. SRS has this dark but content feeling to it. The sampling is masterful, the beats are smooth but dirty, and the lyrics are powerful. If you dig alchemist, Marciano, Muggs, Westside Gunn than this will be right up your alley. I can see why people won’t like this as it’s different from the rest of his albums but it’s beautiful to see Earl grow and attack the demons he’s been facing.
This shit is pure artistic madness... Earl fixed everything that he was lacking on the last projects... for the first time, Earl's music is filled and not even 1 sec is boring... This production mixed with Earls dark vibes is so golden.. As an person who had a lot issues with Earls music and who thinks that his previous work was good when he had features on it... i can say that this album is on god level... sorry Astroworld but SRS is just crazy.. aoty
Personally the album was great to me. The way the tracks ran into each other made it seem like one long ass song without taking away from the individuality of each track. I can see how it’s not for everybody as well.
im feeling a strong to decent 10 on this thing TRANS.....SITION, have you given this album a listen? did you love it did you hate it? what would you rate it? was it the best of the best? what should I review next? LMAO
It got 10x better for me the more I kept playing it , his word play is so dope and entertaining I love it, the instrumentals are dope because they remind me of adult swim with distortion. No other rapper could really pull off these instrumentals
You gotta treat this album like TPAB; the songs work way better when you listen to the full album rather than listen to them individually because these songs work so much better in full context of the album
Tony Wyav honestly facts it’s crazy what it does when your alone laying down with your eyes closed just imaging the words it’s crazy man hearing this album was a crazy experience
Mazinga Paddon ta13oo, dicaprio 2, Ye, Daytona, KSG even Oxnard (if you want to consider it a rap album) and others than I’m forgetting right now in my opinion are all better than this but this is still good
It kind of feels like the hip hop head's hip hop album of the year. Each instrumental uses such a simple loop that grows more complex with each listen. Each verse is deeply contemplated, and the structure is circular. I wouldn't blame someone for bouncing on it after the first listen but it's definitely an album designed for replayability. Personally I love letting the whole album wash over me and I get fully invested with each listen.
I don't think this was a big step sonicaly for Earl, we've been seeing him going more and more experimental and emotional. he's wanted to become more underground and abstract. I'm happy he's taken this direction becuase you can tell that he's making this album for him and for art not for 'relpay value' which should be alot less relvent anyway
After like my 50th listen of the song Playing Possum, after months of its release, while it was playing in the background, as i was cleaning my room and for a split second my mind went completily into the ideea of the song, like his parents being kind of honored and given praise to, i randomly began crying like full on, but with my mind also into the chores that i was doing. I was still crying when i actually realized i was crying. It was a weird and beautiful moment for my own personal reasons and i think it was the first song from the album that i cried on. That's why i love Earl. I feel like talking or just listening to some deep buried part of me that always wants to get out and live and experience shit, but stays most of the time down there because of its fear of failure/hard work without quick results or hard work without the expected result and just overall hopefull state of my mind. Shit has been good lately, even tho i feel like i'm standing in the exact same spot everyday and not evolving in any way, a lot of the times. I kinda went on a tangent here, but that's why i like Earl, he shares his stories taken outside of his own box and i feel like that's also how he deals with the shit in his life.
Might be on par with Ta13oo, my favorite of the year. And I'm not even an Earl fan like that. Just the authenticity and boldness of the production and delivery really did something for me that no project has done in a while.
Alec Engelstad that's what makes me so nervous lmao like I'm so happy that Earl is hopefully happy with this cause I value his happiness more than mine lol but it may be an even longer drought now for new shit 🙃
Earl is by far the most genuine and unique. This whole album is not supposed to make your head bob, it’s a bunch of long as complex verses over truly stunning beats that have loads of detail. Every aspect is “unique” tho the lyrics, FLOW, beat, all experimental. Fantastic I think
Said the whole time listening to the album “I can’t get into it” “no replay value” “I’m not hearing anything new as Mf Doom has done this before” “beats doesn’t work well for Earl” “I probably won’t listen to it again and I wanted replay value” and at the end you rate the album 7/10. Your rating is just as confusing as the sonics of this album
Bryan He hangs on replay value to much, not in the context of the album but on tracks. When this video came out I had a problem with his criticisms of it. He tries to review this album based on how many tracks are good rather than what it meant, how the songs make the album. He is reviewing the album not the songs. It just seems lazy or at least not how an honest reviewing would go about criticizing it. You made a great point.
I haven't replayed an album so much in years. Came out in November and I'm still repeating it in February, peeling back new layers each time. This one definitely rewards repeated listens in a big way. Earl's best album so far. Azucar is something else; I don't even know what to say about it but I just have to single it out.
For me this album is a 10. It hits really deep, it reminds me of something i was just able to overcome, my addiction. At the beginning of the album earl lost himself, the beats in the first 3 songs all have these crazy hypnotic vocal loops, it was really scary for me thinking abt it how it reminded me of the intrusive thoughts that come with addiction, they become distracting of how you’re able to present yourself and organize any thought in your head, for the first 4-6 songs on this album it’s like the beats are controlling his vocal performance. On December 24th he talks abt mead acid ruining his mental, thus reminded me of the spiritual interaction i had that helped me go cold turkey, being able to identify that by letting yourself be addicted to things you let them control how you adapt to environments, it fucks with how you’re able to interpret any sense completely. The mint is almost like a fresh breath of air for earl, he literally says he’s in control now of the substance in hand. Azucar is the sweet moment for earl, it seems like this is where he’s able to get back into his groove again, and eclipse is where he’s finally one with his self again, and it’s the best feeling ever bc once you’re able to find yourself you can understand other people’s feelings and how you can help them. It seems like the track Riot! is actually the opposite of a riot in that the instrumental is like what you’d hear when you’re reaching the white light at the end of a tunnel, it’s as if he’s finally able to settle down the riot in his head and sleep well. I feel like earl specifically doesn’t give a fuck what he titles this work bc he doesn’t care what anyone else thinks abt this album bc it’s a really deep moment for him, this album seems like it’s more for him and his health rather than for his fans.
As someone that both didn't really see alot of his father growing up and ending up in a terminal relationship with their father to the point of spiraling into a depression and anxiety, I think he captured the feeling of that perfectly in his music. This isn't meant to get hype to. It's art, that's why you're struggling with a comparison for it, though MF DOOM was a perfect attempt as many of us felt the same way just from the singles. You have to just let it happen and piece it together bit by bit. I appreciate the discomfort of having to dig through the sounds which are so pronounced to try and hear his voice which is so retreated on some of these. To me it's how it feels to try to dig through life which can be loud and in favor of others, while for you it may be harder and you have to struggle to find the meaning. I think you nailed it on the head when you said of the one song it's something he felt, not something I felt. Thats exactly the point. It's as pure of a musical expression as I've ever heard and having it be about the pain and suffering of going through what many of us have gone through, it speaks volumes where as others wont understand it at all. I would honestly recommend sitting down, have nothing else going on, nothing to pull you away such as commitments, strap on the headphones, and give the whole thing another whirl. This time not to critique every portion of it, but digest it in it's entirety.
4:58 Shawn! You need to listen to Madlib, Kanckick, Jay Dee (J Dilla), Knxwledge, Flying Lotus, Jneiro Jarre etc... To not be surprised by this kind of beats
This album is hypnotizing. I’ve listened to this album all the way through countless times and still can’t decide if I enjoy this or not. There’s just something about it’s atmosphere that keeps me coming back.
I don't think it's purpose was to grab a huge audience(hence the title), I just believe he really did go through all that trauma of realization that he was mentally dismembered. The ending track represents him coming to a sort of coping mechanism which is why that track is so melodic and more pleasing to the ears compared to the rest of the album. I do get why you wouldn't necessarily return to a lot of these tracks, I think it was just an honest representation of his literal coming out of the burrow he was in and finding a kinda peace IN MY OPINION
Bruh on GOD I just literally stopped listening to this album and clicked on your reaction. The Production is experimental AF. His parents is on it. S H A W N 👀 C E E
The way I see it, the title embodies that slumped and hollow attitude of a depressed person and the kind of vocabulary they use. The dis-jointed and scattered production takes you on a journey of depression kind of like the stages of it through out life as you grow. The ending track solidifies this for me because it is a bittersweet celebratory track to close out the depressive experience as you learn that it'll forever be with you but you just learned how to handle it better with stuff being better in life but still no fulfillment. An interpretation of a depressed person
While this album isn’t my top earl project. As an earl fan this is the album we needed. Especially with the last song I felt a kind of peace and can only imagine what’s to come from earl.
Do a recap...I wonder if your thoughts have changed...I felt the same way when the album first dropped but I listened to it 2 years later and everything just made sense...now I can't go a day without listening to Azucar
When extreme stress overlaps, people want to change their mental and soul even forcibly. Going out doesn't solve the problem and may haunt Earl forever, but embraces and expresses his negative world while accepting and expressing himself. Expressing the primitive sense of exaltation of an animal cannot be realized without the pain of tearing, even if it is a genius.
Ajay idk man, personally i didnt know about the fact that its his uncle song but i just think that after this 25 minutes dense raw experience, this is such a beautiful poetic moment in its instrumentation. Idk just finishes the album in a beautiful but bittersweet place if that makes sense
His uncle was a famous jazz musician who died, his dad also died. The final track is one of his uncle's songs. When it fades out it's him coming to grips with them being gone
for me this album feels more like an album for earl sweatshirt himself, as if hes just trying to get his life out for the past 3 years on some tracks. it uses heavy distortion and lofi elements on a new level that isnt common in this generation of music, i believe that the distortion represents earl sweatshirts disconnection from the rest of the world. as if hes been so focused on his life that he forgot to connect with everyone else outside. I also did notice as you pointed out the phrase "why aint nobody tell me i was bleeding" i believe this represents him leaving behind his old friends because they didnt tell him that he was dying on the inside. anyways thats my thoughts on earl sweatshirts album, also im aware that this is a late comment, but i just never watched the full vid here so ehh
This album was the first I had listened to earl and me fall in love with his music. The album had the ability to make me lie in bed and just listen to the album with no distractions. It became a no skip album for me and a classic. It has the ability to change my mood and attitude in the moment and I’m okay with that. An album that holds a special part in my heart and made me an earl fan
I appreciate the honesty in this video. It’s important to keep a constructive, critical eye open even when it’s in reference to a beloved artist. Keep up the great work. Have a blessed day.✌️
Trevor Rightor not at all, not everyone will grasp how much of an artistic masterpiece this album is but it really is a masterpiece and one of if not the best album I’ve ever listened to
I’m so glad you did this review. There is a ridiculous amount of material to unpack with his few words that he gives into the music. It’s like trying to read a couple words off every page of a book and trying to put the story together. So many contexts and hidden meanings.
If u know earl u knew this was coming. He's been on record saying shit like "I dont do long albums" I dont count doris as a earl album since it had a huge odd future vibe (I'm not dumb I know it's his album and he was part of of) but doris just feels different to me the IDLS or SRS
Love what u said about earl rapping over an atmosphere over rapping over a song. Almost feels at times as if he is sort of reciting a poem over background sounds/ambience/music more than connecting with it in a way that makes musical sense as far as key and beat and rhythm
19:56, I always thought of Riot! being the light at the end of the tunnel. Like after all the unorganized and depressing songs Riot! is supposed to be the feeling of hope knowing that you’ll get out of the things your going to get through it. The tunnel being a depressive/sad state and the light being hope/happiness.
Red Water is my favorite track so far, but this is definitely a project where in one year I'm going to hate my 2018 self for not feeling a track I can't stand right now
I’ve listened a few times already and I love it. The beats are raw and honest, and his mixing adds a layer to the dynamic of the track and the mood he’s in. I’ve honestly just listened to the album in full multiple times because every song provides such progression to the next, with some gaining more replay value as I listen. I enjoy it 👍🏽

He gave it a DAMN./10
I don't think this was a big step sonicaly for Earl, we've been seeing him going more and more experimental and emotional. he's wanted to become more underground and abstract. I'm happy he's taken this direction becuase you can tell that he's making this album for him and for art not for 'relpay value' which should be alot less relvent anyway
We’ll replay value is EVERYTHING. If I only play your album once, no matter how great it is, it only stays with me... & that’s IMO

I think this will be Earl’s last album for a while if not ever

Your rating is just as confusing as the sonics of this album
honestly it should be 8.8 at least. I hope he does a final thoughts video on this one

I feel like earl specifically doesn’t give a fuck what he titles this work bc he doesn’t care what anyone else thinks abt this album bc it’s a really deep moment for him, this album seems like it’s more for him and his health rather than for his fans.
whatever you rate this album you have to give it +2 cuz of that cover

I do get why you wouldn't necessarily return to a lot of these tracks, I think it was just an honest representation of his literal coming out of the burrow he was in and finding a kinda peace IN MY OPINION
this album is next level.

This album not trash, just not for everyone.. or most people at that
While this album isn’t my top earl project.
This album is amazing from a production stand point, very inspiring
This is his experimental album, his Cherry Bomb, his Endless, his Divine feminine....cant wait to see how this ages
I wish he added a little verse on that outro instrumental
that would completely ruin the songs meaning its sampled from his uncle's song who past away not to long ago its a tribute

Ajay idk man, personally i didnt know about the fact that its his uncle song but i just think that after this 25 minutes dense raw experience, this is such a beautiful poetic moment in its instrumentation. Idk just finishes the album in a beautiful but bittersweet place if that makes sense
Nope, it's such a bold way to finish the album
That instrumental is almost like a small light of hope at the end of the tunnel
