I do think the mixing makes the album better; if these tracks were cleanly mixed they wouldn’t have the same hazy, disoriented, confused and sometimes claustrophobic feel to counterpoint the lyrics. A cleaner mix would make it easier to listen to, but not necessarily better from an artistic standpoint.
That very fact that it’s “harder” to listen to makes it more enjoyable for me. More of a challenge to your mind, you discover something new on each listen
There's a profound emotionality to this album that is really hard for me to put into words. It honestly makes me tear up every time I listen. I have been diagnosed with depression for a long time now and have felt a lot of the same hopelessness that Earl seems to have felt. I love music, but I have never really vibed with the idea of listening to sad music while depressed, because it often makes me feel worse. This album was instantly different. It was almost like an emotional cleansing. It took everything I was feeling, manifested it into music and sounds, and helped me to get it all out, and still leave on a positive, optimistic note (with Riot! At the end). No other album has EVER made me feel the way this album has, and so its impossible for me to objectively say it is anything other than a 10/10. I totally understand people having a different opinion, but this album was unlike anything I've ever experienced, and I'm so glad I was able to hear it. Thank you Earl.
This album felt like an extension of Solace and for me that's a good thing as I think that short EP was some of Earl's most heartfelt and best work. The production, while being mixed poorly I know, I thought was perfect for Earl's rapping style and subject matter. I really feel like he found his pocket on this album and in my opinion this is his best work both in terms of the atmosphere it creates while you listen to it and in terms of his lyrics. Great release from one of my favourite rappers
honestly feels like your listening to old records that earls showing you while he talks about his dad and the last few years, definitely a similar vibe to solace
@@unitedleagueofgamers3633 Oh wow I didn't know that. That's pretty cool since Red Water was one of the songs that immediately reminded me of Solace when I first listened to it now I know why lol
I like to think of the album itself as like a live poetry show,it’s aesthetics, content, and sound makes each song sound like a live performance as if he’s spitting the verses from a mic in front of me.
This album isn’t unfinished or just an idea. It’s what abstract expressionism looks like in music. If you look at a Willem de Kooning or Jackson Pollock, it is easy to disregard it as lazy, but in reality these kinds of paintings focus more on conveying a feeling and provoking thought. There is no concern in following traditional artistic methods and styles. It is a more raw form of human expression.
But at the end of the day the music just doesn't sound good. The lyricism is masterful on the project but I just can't get down with it because of the mixing and how Earl never lets the instrumentals breathe, or just lets them swallow him.
Adam Shoshani I agree, there are only a few songs with little replay value, but I also wouldn’t make a shirt out of a Jackson pollock you get what I’m sayin? I don’t think earl made this album with the intention of it being played on the radio or even with your friends in a car. I think his intention was to teach and inspire through his own experience and introspection. And at the end of the day, that’s what a great artist should seek to do. And for me at least, that makes this his best project to date
@@CoachAlex99 As a piece of art I can appreciate it, but at the end of the day this is music and he released an album. As MUSIC, it has failed in that it is not sonically pleasing or even that interesting. The art aspect holds up, but it has failed me as an album. Look at Kendrick's TPAB, the messages and sequencing of that album are masterful, but the music is also gorgeous.
Adam Shoshani Adam Shoshani you’re creating a limited definition of what music should be, I encourage more albums like this that challenge the mainstream. Music and art in general is created for an audience, you are right in that. But what you take away from it is dependent on the beholder. TPAB is a masterpiece, but just because it appeals to a wider audience doesn’t give it more credibility as art. I’m just trying to say that assigning definition to any art is a subjective task. 3:01 “If you don’t like the mix, you don’t like the mix, no amount of reasoning is gonna make you like it more”

My first listen was just about getting adjusted to the sonic quality. I might not have been able to fully digest it, but I could tell there was something special about it. I've replayed it many times since and keep finding more about it that I like and I think it's an incredibly personal and raw album that does a great job of being expressive without forcing an idea or image in a tight 25 minute span. Playing it from start to finish without break seems critical because I think project needs to be experienced as a whole and I respect Earl for giving us something that isn't derivative of what is most popular.
good review but i don't like the wording of "poor mixing" we need to lose the mindset of correct/professional mixing. it's not a 1% to 100% road. the mixing is very particular and feels purposeful. it is very raw, for sure, but its very hard to do and takes a lot of skill and knowledge if the mixing was more "mainstream" or "professional" or "easy listening" , as people call it, it would lose a lot of emotion, color and personality the mixing on the album very much adds to the project
