My opinion of what a street car is.
Platform is a factory chassis with factory or very close to factory wheelbase, no stretched chassis or relocated wheel wells.
    Registration and insurance.
    All working lights
Has doors that work like stock and are practical for something you could drive daily.
Has factory safety equipment still unless upgraded. (Aka 5pt replacing 3pt belts. Etc) the car is identifiable as an OEM body style and still has OEM sheetmetal. (No all glass bodies. Glass hood, trunk and possibly doors would pass as acceptable.)
Is able to be driven over speed bumps and other normal roadway obstacles without excessive scraping, damage or getting high centered. Has a working trunk that can be used as a trunk. Cars that have been rear halfed and have rear firewalls and /or have the trunk filled with fuel cell I wouldn't consider to be a "street car" unless it was factory like that.. (original AC Cobra or some GT350 mustangs for example)
I'd also say that the dashboard would have to be functional. (Original dash pads, HVAC, controls, glove box etc. Cars that have a sheetmetal dash are not really "street cars" because driving in the winter windows fog up with no equipment that came stock to defog or manage any other functionality like wipers, heat etc. ). A good street car to me is basically a factory chassis that has tasteful suspension upgrades, drivetrain and power train upgrades, but the car retains drivability and most factory features and accessories. And MILD exhaust. Something you can start at 5am and hear but not so bad that you wake everyone in the neighborhood.
For example. A buddy of mine has a C6 Corvette. 416 LS stroker, huge turbo and tires/wheels, clutch setup with a stand alone PCM. Carbon brake upgrade and coilovers that were corner balanced. The car makes 1300 wheel through mostly stock drivetrain. AC got deleted but heater is still connected. This is 100% a street car. It's drivable, mild mannered, and not obnoxiously loud.

I daily drove my bridgeported Rx4 for 12 yrs. 1st motor did 120,000km. 2nd did about 50k before I sold it. Loved every minute of it…except fuel economy. At one stage I was regularly driving it between Canberra and the Gold Coast. Could only do about 300km on a 65l tank with a 5 speed and 4.1 diff. Biggest negative was hearing loss - my ears used to ring after a 30 plus minute drive. At the time I loved every second….especially the REAL pops and bangs a 48 IDA Webber and 3 inch exhaust provided 😂

I’m pretty much in the same boat as you, if it has rego and you can actually drive a decent distance then it’s a “streetcar” is it a street legal car, probably not. But I don’t care either, I love to see tuff cars being used, nothing better then seeing a fast “racecar” being used on the street💪🏿 should be more of it.

Street car modifications but completely legal as in engineering compliance
As for most of the drag challenge cars I would think that 3/4 of them would be big yellow sticker if pulled over by the hwy patrol maybe someone will run an event that all cars must be completely street legal and rwc that would be a bit different in the et times and drivability tests included let’s see whether it ever happens

After losing count of the amount of defects I received in the 90's here in Oz I put it down to 2 categories in 2022,,1 is a Street "Driven" car(till its not) and the other is a Street "legal" car due to having gone through the proper process and not being shit scared everytime you see a cop car and then being fined and ending up on the back tow truck and a few thousand out of pocket in fines ,,we can argue to the moon and back, but what's best for the wallet wins hands down but being the latter is a no brainer for me and those who have done the same have said the same....Sorry just my 2 cents

If the EPA gets their way in America the term 'street car' will refer to an unmodified factory released vehicle! Then eventually Australia will follow suit. The days of 8/7/6 second street cars will be one of those 'good old days' memories our parents always talk about! Interesting times

If the tyrant's in Washington get their way you won't be able to buy anything but a EV that you can't modify at all beyond gutting it and cosmetics. Why I call anyone that is all excited about how quick acceleration a EV has and calls themselves a car person f'n phony... Any jackass can buy a 1 trick pony plaid and get similar results to everyone else with one.. That's when racing will truly become he who has the latest and greatest will win because it will totally negate any building, tuning and driving skill.. There is already enough morons that think they can buy wins and get butt hurt and lose their f'n mind when someone knows what they are doing and actually have skill hands them their azz with far less..

Australia is already FAR more restrictive than the USA with regards to the road legality of vehicles. I've seen car channels like Roadkill driving cars in supposed "nanny states" like California that would get you arrested in Western Australia. Not just pulled over and fined, but actually arrested on the spot for public endangerment and reckless driving.

    @ChristopherHallett Рік тому +1

For a car to be a street car, it must be registered and road-legal. If you get pulled over by the filth and yellow-stickered, it's not a street car. So, mods must be legal or engineer certified. I personally also believe the car must be comfortable enough to use as a daily, but some folks are happy driving mobile torture devices around so that's a subjective quality, not objective.

Yeah I'm with you on that one 👍 If it's registered and u can drive it more than 200 miles without any problems, working headlights, seat belts, tail lights etc. then it's a street car 👍👌
Problem I'm having is I'd love to register my vn with it's turbo v6 setup is I've been quoted 4500$ to go through engineering to register it, it's bs tbh ,literally just turboed the stock v6 and 4500$ ,1200ish for the engineer the rest to the government for brake test (Will be doing the vt brakes cause the stock single pots are pretty useless) and emissions testing (1500 a shot even if u fail, so 1500 per attempt) but yeah the cost is rediculas, last car I had engineered in nsw was only 800 total, here in Vic 4500 absolutely disgusting especially for a car that's barely modified with not even 15k in it.
It's a budget build cause it's all I can afford, if it was a 100k build then yeah 4500 is nothing.
It's extortion all because the Victorian government doesn't want people modifying their cars. So they make it so prohibitively expensive to deter us but all it achieves is people just do a dodgy and go on h plates like what I'm going to be doing 🤷‍♂️🤣

Hi there as a mechanic and car modification nut I understand why you think it’s costly to engineer a car but it’s more to the point that it’s trying to make safer cars rather than the idiots I see all the time and spend $10000-$20000 grand making them go fast and never think about the handling and braking capabilities of that 2 tonne weapon that won’t stop like it used to and so on its great that you’re going to increase the stopping power of your car but don’t think that just putting a better set of callipers on it will work also look at the master cylinder sizing and also the brake lines std rubber doesn’t work as well as a braided line that doesn’t flex anywhere as much and one more the brake booster and master cylinder bracket upgrade it to stop flex in that std 1mm thick sheet metal factory shit and it does make a huge difference in that car stopping good luck

As for the eternal argument of a real 'street car' is one that will most likely be forever devoid of any answer due to the multitude of variables and ones own opinions. Examples of the expired arguments in this field are...
"HAS TO HAVE STEEL PANELS" so Corvette's out then, so too AC Cobras, and anything made from crp composites like 'the exotics' so thats BS
"HAS TO BE MADE BY A VEHICLE MANUFACTURER" so anything homebuilt, coachbuilt or specialized fails qualification, again BS.
"HAS TO HAVE FULL INTERIOR AND AC" so how about all that interior in the Willys MB/Ford GPW ? callin BS on the interior requirements.
"HAS TO BE ABLE TO GO THROUGH A DRIVE THRU" I guess a super stretch limousine cant be a streetcar then, guess it must be a potato.
"I DRIVE IT ON THE STREET THEREFORE STREETCAR" really? What street? Sesame Street? Ive driven my car on a footpath ... Doesn't make it a footpath car
Even discretionary judgment by enforcement officers vary the street argument, one may be accepting of a mod, another may not.
" Street car " is so loosely compartmentalized I doubt a solid definition will ever be reached.
My hollow dont mean chit opinion...
Have to carry supply of special (ie 'race') main fuel. FAIL
Has to be towed/trailered to a street (not race) meet. FAIL
Fowls plugs when driven at low speeds. FAIL
    Overheats in stationary traffic. FAIL
Cant pass a local vehicle inspection or local regulations. FAIL
Doesn't have registration 'tags' or plates for it's locality. FAIL
Have to change over major components from street to race. FAIL
Cant drive in all average weather conditions. FAIL
Needs starting assist or convoluted pre start procedures. FAIL
STREET CAR is like saying mushroom pole, scotch mist or refrigerator orbit. With many variables world-wide I would hazzard to say there is actually no such thing as a street-car..
ROADCAR maybe.... So what makes a 'road-csr'....?

If you can fill it with bowser fuel, and take it on a decent drive without having to stop every 20kms... it's a street car. Screw VSB 14, Screw ADRs. Alot of the cars that get pinged are realistically far safer than half of the daily drivers we share the highway with on a daily basis...

Street car: has to be driven to the drag strip and driven home. Whether or not your modplates r legit or exist doesn't bother me

I don't see how using one of the baddest azz well known street cars as being click bait... Mullet is a prime example of many people's argument of what a street car is.. Not a huge fan of Cleeter but no denying Mullet is a badass street car. It's way more street car than many people's trailer queens that cant touch it..
In my opinion. If the car is tagged, has working lights and can be driven down the highway at least 100 miles and won't burn down sitting in traffic it's a street car. I don't care if it has 5hp or 50,000hp. Anything that cant do that is a race car
