Is it Possible to Upload an Impossible Level in Super Mario Maker?
Вставка

- For years, I've been trying to upload an impossible level in Super Mario Maker. But no matter what I tried, uploading an impossible level, was seemingly impossible in Super Mario Maker. Until recently, because recently I learned about a couple of really interesting glitches and tricks in Super Mario Maker, that could be useful when trying to do the impossible. In this video we are going to recreate my journey to create a completely impossible Super Mario Maker level. We will take a look at a couple of different things, I and other people tried over the years to trick nintendo's system, and in the end we will finally find out, if it is possible to upload a stage in Super Mario Maker that is truly impossible to beat.

Thanks so much for the kind words Ceave! Sorry, saw this late, lol. (Psycrow)
Users, note it requires the disc version, but other 1.0 things like vine clips can make it impossible too. Can also use for things like impossible troll levels that make the player think it's their fault, or give yourself a true dev-only route for uploading just a hard level.
Vine Clips actually cannot create impossible levels. They're globally patched, but Nintendo only made them frame-perfect inputs now.
Incredibly annoying, yes, but possible.
What are vine clips
@@filmsbuildsngaming307 in SMB1, you can clip into a wall by trying to climb onto a vine that is directly behind a wall. Prior to version 1.30 you could simply press right to get the clip, but now it's a frame-perfect input to do the same. Not impossible, but not easy either
Here's a video showing it.
ua-cam.com/video/UIWqkHx2aiI/v-deo.html
Well, on a list Jeffie gave me (not used in this video) was "Vine Clip (old method)" and other things like the height of vines that come from invisible blocks. There may be more than one vine clip method, if that's right. Or it could just be a bad example lol
@@JoCr2 yeah, I know that, lol. It was my list he gave you. The old method only differs from the new in the fact that it's now frame-perfect.
So vine clips were globally patched, but every level with a vine clip is technically possible. Just stupid, haha.
i like how he takes down his impossible level while simultaniously opening the floodgates for thousands of viewers to upload impossible levels

Welp. Like he said, they shouldn't exist. He proved they were possible sure, but that doesn't mean he told people to do it. If people do it, it's their actions
OH DEAR GOD. WE ALL SHOULD HAVE SEEN THIS COMING. CURIOSITY HAS KILLED US ALL! NOW... PEOPLE WILL GET WII U, UPON WII U, JUST TO TROLL THOSE NON-SKIP DUDES.... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooOOOoooooOOooooOoooooooooOoOOOOOOooooooøøøøø.........

“These levels should be taken down for the sake of no skip 100 Mario challenges”.
Well, you kind of just gave us the keys to the mansion before telling us to keep it locked.
Most No-skip challengers will break that rule (skipping a level) for glitched levels. Whether they're phantom jumps or unbeatable levels.
@@cody3247 Yeah, but they might not realize it until after losing some lives if the "impossible" element is hidden deeper in the level for some reason. And, thanks to human nature, most of the people that use these glitches will probably think diabolically like that.
Or gave us atom bomb plans before telling us not to use them.

hi ars
7:45 It's possible that the nature of the Mario Maker RNG makes this genuinely impossible. The full cyclic sequence of the RNG may simply not contain a long enough stretch of consecutive normal mushrooms.
You might be correct, but this requires many researches from an emulator.
@@J05TI That would make no difference. Regardless of when the code generates the next pseudorandom number, the entire sequence is predetermined.
@@J05TI I'm not saying that the game generates the same exact random numbers each time a level is played or that it's iterating through a hardcoded list of numbers. I'm saying that pseudorandom number generators by their very nature emit numbers from a mathematically predetermined cyclic sequence. The seed just determines where in that sequence they start emitting numbers.
@@J05TI When I say the sequence is predetermined, I mean that in an abstract mathematical sense. As an example, suppose we have a very simple PRNG that generates the next number like this:
x = (x + 7) mod 10
And suppose we let it be seeded with any number from 0 to 9. It's a mathematical fact that this PRNG will follow this sequence:
0, 7, 4, 1, 8, 5, 2, 9, 6, 3, 0...
It doesn't matter when a computer evaluates the rule, the sequence is already predetermined as a consequence of the math involved. The seed will only change where we begin in the sequence.
Obviously production-grade PRNGs have _MUCH_ longer sequences and generally produce higher quality random numbers but the basic concept remains the same.
@@J05TI Here's the problem with that: How do you tell a computer to pick a random number from 1-10? The solution is to use mathematical functions that produce sequences which look random but actually aren't, such as the example I gave. So in your example, it's possible that the PRNG being used is emitting numbers from a sequence that simply doesn't contain a long enough stretch of numbers without a 1 and it's genuinely impossible for someone to play through the level without getting a weird mushroom.
I love how thorough you are. You didn’t just stop at almost impossible. You made it impossible.
@PlayIngoHD But it was uploaded in 1.47 and it was not uploaded in 1.0. Do you have proof?
Nice 😎
1) Discover a glitch move
2) Create a level where that glitch move is necessary in order to beat it
3) Inform Nintendo about it
4) Wait until they patch it
Congratulations, you have an impossible level!
clever
Or create a dev exit that includes several weird mushroom randomizers that pump infinite mushrooms
5) Get all your stars taken away because Nintendo doesn't like people experimenting with things that weren't intended
Genius
How
There are a ridiculous amount of 100% impossible levels online. Because someone at Nintendo thought it'd be a great idea to retroactively patch a bunch of glitches and tech...
Thing is, they should've only patched the glitches in new levels and kept them in old ones.
That's a nightmare from a software development point of view. You have to have multiple ruleset in your game you need to dynamically switch between. And you have to decide if a bug fix is means a new ruleset or not (and whether to fix it in old rulesets)
What's more annoying, is that not everything they globally patched was even a glitch. They also globally patched how vines worked which created impossible levels.
It's also really annoying playing a level and not knowing about how something is going to work because you don't know which physics version you're playing on.
Hopefully they improve this on Mario Maker 2.
Another popular now impossible was the phantom jump trick,
Nintendo patch it up so phantom jump are no longer possible to perform, making levels which use the trick that previously perfectly beatable became impossible to finish.
That sucks. Why do so many people wanted an absolutely impossible level so badly? That just sucks for those playing the 100 Mario Challenge, like me.
There is one way to make a truly impossible level.
Make a level where the only way to get through is with a glitch. Then report that glitch so players can no longer use it.
Then the stage is deleted and you get banned

8:07 Because of the way RNG works in this game it's guaranteed that, in the time it takes for mario to eat all of the yum-yum mushrooms, a weird one spawns in. The details are actually surprisingly simple, the numbers update every frame with a preset order, and by the time mario eats everything the numbers loop back around

Don't they use some sort of method like relying on data that is not dependent on the system, like the number of Mario Maker level's uploaded within the last second, or the time in milliseconds since the year 3141? Even something as simple as the player input can make the number of iterations before it repeats significantly higher.

Nintendo: We will make a perfect system that won't allow you to upload levels unless you beat them.
Also Nintendo: We should allow for client side validation for completion of levels.
Don't worry, Nintendo. My lawyers and I combed through the server and sent you all of the games we believed to be beatable.
hhaahah
You're aware it's literally impossible (or atleast extremely impractical) to do that on the server side?
There's no efficient or good way to validate it on the server. The client is the only good way, it's not like people are going to MITM their console (which probably wouldn't work) The only issue here is they forgot to make the player clear it before uploading an offline saved level. That is a mistake that happens to tons of games.
Nonsense, it's perfectly possible to do it on the server side.
Simply have the client send you its game seed and sequence of inputs, and run it through a serverside emulator running in a sandbox.
That would also easily let you re-validate stages on patches.
@@FeepingCreature What sequence of inputs? The client doesn't have any sequence of inputs until after they verify it on the client. If you did the thing in the video, there'd be no sequences and depending on how nintend handles that it may cause an error on the serverside (bad, bad, bad) or reject it (good, but the same solution would be even better if you just run the test on the client) And once the client actually verifies it, there's no point in verifying it in the server. This is a simple matter of Nintendo forgot to force you to pass the level before uploading offline levels. There zero purpose of verifying on the server once they already verified on the client.

The pseudo random number generator in Mario Maker is deterministic and repeats. Therefore a "lanky shroom" level with sufficiently many shrooms would call the rng function more times than the longest gap between the two values of the function that would output a lanky shroom. So given an arbitrarily large number of shrooms, at least one of them will always be lanky, and it is no longer a statistical phenomenon. Thus, lanky shroom levels can actually be impossible, given enough mushrooms. 🍄
Ooh, do we have an upper bound on the number of mushrooms we would need?
The pRng on literally any computer is deterministic.
Not sure if a mersenne twister would repeat before you have reached the memory cap / before the wii/nintendo breaks though.

Good god, this has opened many doors for the purpose of making dev-only areas or impossible levels.
Pretty freakin late but hey this was actually very enjoyable thanks for this video!
There is an impossible level where you have a cube with a key into it and a red coin above it. You have to tap the cube to get this coin. In this level you need ONE key to go on the first locked door but, because of the red coin, you have a second key. Because of this second key you can't go up with a creeper, so you have to go in the door and die. So how could he upload it ? Actually, there was a pipe to create a second area to put there a second red coin. Then, when he play the level to upload it, I don't know why, he had only one key because the level counts the second coin but after, when you play the level, the level believe there is only one red coin, so you have the TWO Keys. So this is a level impossible.

On the topic of old glitches, the shadow jump glitch was a common exploit used to make extremely difficult speed running levels but Nintendo fixed the glitch making it so previously do-able levels became impossible. The glitch allowed people to do a second triple jump directly after a triple jump with one less jump.
So first triple jump took the normal three jumps to activate, but there was a way so if there was a second one right after you could do the jump with 2 jumps instead of 3.
In early Mario maker history there was an invincibility glitch, that involved doors, I made a level that in order to beat it you have to use the glitch. Later, Nintendo patched the glitch, I now have an impossible level.
What about a level that requires a phantom jump?
What's a phantom jump?

when there was the invincibility glitch i uploaded a level that needed to use that glitch. and it still hasnt been deleted for some reason, since nowadays you cant beat it anymore
I told you we haven't got past from Mars because all the rocket scientists are studying Mario.
Hi Ceave, I really enjoy this video, and I was thinking of a way to know if level are still beatable in any version of the game. ( With that, player will know if a level is still possible to beat after an update ).
Here is the idea, normally, if we press exactly the same inputs of the creator of the level when he share it, we need to be able to clear the level in any version. If we can't beat it, it mean a mechanic/glitch was patched we don't know if the level is beatable anymore ( maybe yes, maybe no ).
All Nintendo need to do ( but they need to do it at the very beginning of SMM, it's better, it is to save 2 things when you clear a level for share it :
1) Save the input of the player
2) Save the "random seed".
I guess the random of SMM is based on a seed ( I'm not sure, but it is common in a lot of games ).
And that it, with that you can know if a level is still beatable, or if the level can't be cleared by using the same inputs & random than the level creator. (Note : we don't dont if the level is still beatable if the inputs doesn't work).
- One of your French follower. (me)
Or when you update the game you nead to clear all levels that ar about to be uploaded again.
Why not. Or put the level in a "unknow if possible to clear" state, and the level can't be used in 100 mario challenge ( and switching the color of the window level to red/orange ). Someone need to clear it and the level will be consider like an normal level again.
That would require them to run full simulations of every level, which is likely too computationally expensive.
Another option could have been recording the win percentage of each level before and after an update and detecting if the percentage decreases drastically, although that would unfortunately require players to lose a lot first.
I'm actually not convinced that they *don't* do this, since impossible levels used to exist every time they originally fixed those exploits, but don't exist anymore.
Great idea. They can also add a button "Try if the level is possible" ( or something like that ) in the pause menu, and when you press it, you exit the level and your console test if the level is possible ( it will took few mins, expect if it is a very long level that took hours and hours... ). That would be great in the 100 Mario, and if the level is unpossible to beat, you recover each 1up you lose in the level.
The only problem with needing to re-clear it after an update is that there are tons of really, really hard kaizo levels out there where people have put maybe 10+ hours in just to upload it once, and they probably don't want to do it again. I think it would be a cool idea though to maybe save a copy of the inputs on the level creator's device and give them the option to try and reupload it with the exact same inputs
why not just rename the channel to Psycrow & Ceave gaming
Because Psycrow IS Ceave.
*Ali-A theme starts playing*
Because that's a really offencive thing for you to suggest. Ceave has done everything for the channel and psycho answered some questions for him, questions he came up with himself. Why doesn't he just name the channel after you since you watch all the videos? Doesn't that make you a major part of it?
did you actually take this serious?
and now it is
The intro song is called Adventure Meme, just found out after 3 years

1: They were not insulting him in any way
2:When YOU want to actually insult somebody about their English fluency, perhaps it would be better if you could speak/type it out properly.
I was thinking of this question yesterday! What a wild coincidence
Trimming the Herbs: Hold my scissors
Great video!
Hi Ceave, I love your videos!
There are fairly a large abundance of levels that are particularly impossible due to Nintendo patching glitches that could be used to exploit through a course.
I don’t think they care about this game anymore to fix any flaws.
Well the Wii U is officially fucking dead. So why should they? Nintendo also doesn't patch ultra shortcuts in Mario Kart Wii, or game breaking bugs on the N64 version of Ocarina of Time.
Ceave: everyone's favorite dinosaur
Grandpoobear: am I a joke to you
I know how to make an impossible level. Put Mario in an inescapable day
This video. But every time Ceave says the word impossible, it gets 2 times faster!
😂
I would go in the settings and make times 2 speed at the start
Nintendo: You cannot upload an impossible level! We have put months of hard work from the best employees into making sure that you cannot! You cannot beat us whatsoever!
Ceave: Yes I can.
Morals: But I mean, well, look, you kinda maybe probably shouldn’t? Your choice though, can’t really force you...
Ceave: Ok.

11:03 hahaha I remember that, I used it in my levels, probably now they are impossible hahaha
I always rewatch this video when it gets recommended to me
What they should have done is made sure the game was deterministic with anything random using the inputs of the player as a seed, or at least use some seed they can check to make sure it works, and then made it so when you upload a stage, it also uploads the exact inputs you used to beat it and they'd check it locally. Then even if you hack your Wii-U you can't submit impossible levels. Though that still allows levels where you're extremely unlikely to win.
If they just rerun the inputs locally, there would be no difference in the ghost block levels. The glitch would work just the same since locally the versions are the same, allowing for the same exploits to take place.
If they're using the modern version of the game, you won't be able to sneak past something that only worked because of a patch. The only way they could get unbeatable levels is if something already submitted becomes impossible. And they could flag any level where the original sequence of instructions doesn't beat it anymore and not have those levels on the 100 Mario challenge until someone beats them.
A simpler and less software-intensive fix would involve the "beatable" status of levels being made. The problem with the outdated system exploit is that you can complete a level while offline marking it possible, then upload it when connected to the internet when it could be impossible. This could by solved by checking to see if the Wii U is connected to the internet before the level can be tested for uploading.
Or just by retesting it after patching. Still, that would only fix this particular exploit. If you can hack your Wii-U you could make it claim any level was beaten.
all they would have to do is determine which version of the game you beat the level on. if it doesn't match, you can't upload it and have to beat it again.
how do you use a particle accelerator to make led ions travel at the speed of light to cause a microscopic sonic boom and microscopic fireballs of 10 trillion degrees fahrenheit?
*its actually surprisingly simple*
please don't use fahrenheit ty.
it okay to use fahrenheit
no it isn't
yes it's
Get a grip, seriously.

Loved that reference
Ahh a man of quality. There is another who watches summoning salt as well!
Thx now we are going to not only get almost near impossible kaizo enemy spam levels but now this ... Well I don't play mario maker so im safe
Well, all of the trolls would have to wipe their Wii U's
Do you play super mario flash 2 ver.c?

*Gets it on the 1st block/doesn't get weird mush*
"Luck as sided with yoshikage kira"
So true
you can change a normal mush into a weird mush in game, and put it in a box. Which is why there's an exclamation mark
That name!)
HOLY MOTHERFUCKING SHIT IS THAT A REFERENCE TO THE POPULAR JAPANESE CARTOON JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURE?!
I think that the likely hood of someone beating the mushroom level is same as the possibility that someone beats Stone Crush tower for ten times in a row while jumping on to Kamek's ugly head with exactly 1 second left .
I love these videos and really miss them :(
Less than an hour later: *Ceave Gaming uploaded a new video*
