The Dawn Of Survival Games - A Stranded II Retrospective

- Released in 2007, I present to you: One of the very first survival games ever made. It's not perfect, but it was one of the first. And that's what matters the most here!
It's got plenty of issues, problematic design and dated elements, but I still had a wonderful time. In this video we do a deep dive on the game, and give it's entire story mode a playthrough to completion. It was... lovely :) Check it out here:

Just a bunch of old school runescape tracks lmao.
Thanks for watching! Let me know if you wanna see more in the future!
The functioning jankiness, the chunky models, the accessible map editor, the easter eggs, the random gameplay-shifting missions, that one game mode from another genre that comes out of nowhere: now this is the pure essence of someone just fucking around in a game engine for fun that I live for. It's one aspect of early games that I miss, graphics and uhhhhh "biases of the time" aside
A pleasantly scuffed experience I wouldn't have otherwise :)

*Slowly crumbles to dust* 💀
😆
Steve's got nothing on this guy, he washes up on an island and just starts smashing solid stone with his bare hands
What the... I... Remember this game! I played it before. Its like something my brain completely erased
Glad (?) I was able to rekindle that memory for you :)
Acid trip? No, we're going on an acid adventure!
one of my first interactions with survival games was mfing sims 2 castaway way back then, i remember nothing about the game but i know i struggled in the early game as a kid and it's a widely unknown game, good times tho
I was never able to dabble any sims expansions that weren't dogs until 3. I should make up for lost time
Survival games are so cool especially when you can build up to the point of self reliance or auto work. It just gives you a rush and sense of accomplishment
Absolutely :)
Everybody wants to rule the world
Thank you very much for that video! Really enjoyed watching it :) (and btw: you pronounced my name perfectly!)
I used to love this game when I was younger.
I remember watching a modded playthrough of this where someone shot down a bird and cooked it over a grill, such fond memories without ever playing it
Wow, memory unlocked. Thank you so much! In fact, I even played the obscure original German game "Schiffbruch". As a kid I was all over freeware game pages. I never imagined I'd see that again, lol
Ah i remember being a wee lad watching gameplay of this game, fun times, more innocent times.
Same here :) Watching some of my old favourite UA-camrs dabble with this was a treat
9:52 that poor snail 😭
"predates most of my audience"
me who was already gainfully employed by the time the first one came out; *pika pi???*
Heh, according to my UA-cam analytics :) I appreciate you all the same
We're back!
God, i remember when I was still super young on UA-cam watching people play this game and they never even found the pick lock (at least I don’t remember them doing so) so it was really weird seeing the length of this vid and wondering what was the point of it being so long! Never knew this game had such a wack plot lol, but honestly it made the game even more charming to me. I’d never imagine this game had whole island hopping and wizards much less a plot at all, really felt like the person who made this really went the extra mile! One thing I don’t like about this game though is the title, as I remember trying to find this game plenty of times on UA-cam before and I just couldn’t cause so many stuff just has the word “stranded” in it sadly. Ended finding it again on a vid on this guys CS fangame. Though, thanks again on covering this game 🎉! Stranded 3 looks really promising from what I’ve seen, so I hope it’s good cause I’m playing it!
Damn the nostalgia
I was drowning it in!
I remember playing this game
right as i was searching it up on steam to buy it u said it was free
Deus was out before stranded and schiffbruch, back in 1996, and even robinson's requiem that was out even earlier
they are extremely deep and complex survival games for that time
what a gem. my story is the same as yours. played it as a child. replayed it at 2023. finished it.
I also trained a monkey. and got my crop eaten by some bugs over and over again.
awesome video. please get a better mic.
Thank you!
He said part two was coming and ice been waiting so long please make it
Congrats, I am pmayin it again aftdr several years of not being able to remember its name
Ah yes good old german games. This is a certified Deutscher Entwickler moment
I remember, when i was 12 was when i first touched this game, getting yelled at by my mother to never play this devil's game again when she spotted over my shoulder that it had hemp in it
Good times
That was one of my core memories too. Seeing stuff like that in a videogame at the time blew my mind
People seem to forget hemp was the main source of industrial fiber before cotton cultivation came around with the discovery of the americas.
Funny thing there is one game I remeber as quite survival game and it's "Tajemnicza wyspa" made in 2004 I guess orginal Stranded is 2003 also Robinson's Requiem is a facinating study algonside Unreal world
yay
2:02 Schiffbruch stream confirmed?!?
this is just like UNDERTALE!
No way, the hit indie game by Toby Fox?!??!!!
