- Vocal Coach Reacts To Richard Marx | Hold On To The Nights | Live | Ken Tamplin
Richard Marx has always had a knack for chart topping singles.
Richard himself has the distinction of being the first solo artist to have his first 7 singles hit the top 5 on Billboard.
He's also an incredibly talented songwriter too and has written 14 number one singles for both himself and other artists.
Marx began writing songs as a teenager and at 17, he was connected to Lionel Richie, to whom Marx gave a copy of recorded songs he had written.
A year later Marx moved to Los Angeles and met with Richie and got his start singing background vocals for various artists.
Richard has gone on to sell more than 30 million albums and his second album was certified quadruple platinum. Billboard has ranked him of the "Greatest of all-time Hot 100 artists".
I'll be reacting to a performance of his hit "Hold On To The Nights". If you are not familiar with us other music, I highly encourage you to look him up.
I hope you enjoy the video and let me know what you thought!
Also be sure to check out this tune by the band Giant which I referenced in the reaction. They have a break in this song very similar to the one Richard Marx used.

Richard is a story teller
Richard Marx is an amazing singer and songwriter, but quite underrated.
Anjelica M 👍
I love his raspy voice.
I concur
RM is one of the top best songwriters and vocalist in the world
When I think of 1980s love songs
Richard Marx is part of that era!
He is definitely an accomplished musician-songwriter!
Cool video Subd 👍
Singers without autotune, y'all. Richard Marx is awesome. He is truly an awesome singer/songwriter and performer.
He have unique voice , when you listen you say , this is Richard Marx
Always loved Richard Marx! 🥰
This man's voice. DAY YUM!
Saw him about 2 years ago in Ft. Lauderdale in a theater. It was literally just him and an acoustic guitar. He killed it. I thought I was going to be disappointed because of the lack of band but he was unbelievable. Plus with the intimate setting he spoke a lot about the motivation for writing a lot of the songs of his we love. That dud still sounds exactly the same. Vocals are spot on and clean as can be
Oh yessss! Born in '73 you've taken me back to my teens!!
Awesome!
Me too !! Love it
Hey Ken thanks for doing Richard Marx I love him he's a great singer he had several songs that I love right here waiting hold on to the nights endless summer nights hazard he s got a lot I like I have his hits on CD i think he's great live he sings just as good live as he does on his recordings to me he sounds a little bit like bryan adams sort of that rasp he has in his voice kind of like bryan adams but Yes he's a great singer he's awesome Ken right here waiting and hold on to the nights are my favorites he s one of my favorite 80s singers this is a beautiful song love it great performance you picked a good one Ken he's wonderful👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍total awesomeness
He is such a talented musician and songwriter. Really talented!!
Yes he is hes very talented Ken thanks for reacting on him one of my favorites
i love the review sir
Just saw him perform last month in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He was on an acoustic tour with Rick Springfield. His range and pitch are still spot-on. Age 60 must be the new 40! Such a great singer/songwriter... Great assessment, Ken! Very enjoyable!
Richard Marx maintained his voice and youth. Amazing!
His song 'Right Here Waiting' inspired my love for music. I first heard the piano version of it at a wedding when I was 4 -- it's the thrilling moment/sensation that I can't erase.
He's a super talented artist.
One of the greatest singer/songwriters I know. I sing some of his songs when I'm sombre, thoughtful, or inspired!
One of a kind voice. Incredible talented. Love listening to him.
Gotta love Richard. Saw him a few years ago in Ft Lauderdale Florida in a theater. It reminded me of VH1 Storytellers. It was just him and an acoustic guitar. The voice held up after all this time. The guy is a giant of a songwriter and he’s a lot of fun. Really cool to watch and listen to him
Rock on!
Oh I love Richard Marx!! He was very popular when I was about 21 and 22 and about the time I was pregnant and had my first child. Thank you!! At the time he was one of my favorite solo male vocalists. Richard Marx is always on pitch!!
He is awesome, Monterey Harris!
Thanks for doing this review on Richard Marx. He's one of my favorite singer/songwriters. I agree with what you said about his singing. I laughed when you mentioned his mullet back in the '80's. I have an interview with him where he says it took him 45 minutes to whip it into submission. LOL. He's written a lot of songs for himself and others and has produced other peoples albums. He's great live. I've seen him a couple times and he's funny and serious and a great storyteller. We could use more songwriters like him these days. Songs that have a message and not a lot of bad language in them. Thank you again for covering Richard.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Maria Day!
I love Richard Marx. I have listened to him since I was 16 I'm now 52. And btw u have an amazing voice as well
Another great, soulful voice still going strong. Always liked him.
Richard still is making new music and just released a new album about a week or two ago. I think a single off of this new album even charted. Regardless of charts or any of that kind of stuff, I’ve always enjoyed Richard’s music.
holydado 👍
This song is genius. He's a great singer and songwriter, quite underrated in my opinion. what I love about this song is how it starts off one-way and then the bridge totally switches it up in another key and then it has you yearning for the chorus back once again so by the time you get to the end it really draws you into it!
..... and after I wrote this and listened to the rest I noticed you said the same thing which makes me very happy lol 😊
You're still the master, Ken. Thanks for making that video
Hi Ken and Bob! The mullet is still a very popular hairstyle and I think it's time that we all jump on the band wagon. While visiting Pennsylvania I noticed a lot of both men and women rocking mullets in a local Walmart store and I realized that they must still be training hairdressers in that particular haircut at beauty schools all across Pennsylvania. Each mullet was more fabulous than the next. Richard Marx and his band were not only extremely talented singers, song writers and performers but also pioneers in popularizing what can be considered one of the sweetest and most confusing hairstyles of all time...the mullet. Thank you Ken for not only bringing attention to Richard Marx's awesome singing and song writing talent but also to his and the band's beautiful hair cut. For those about to rock (the mullet)...we salute you!
ASSMAN 🤣
That was great Ken!
I will be Right Here
Waiting for you! 💜
For the next time
you do another
Awesome Review! 👍
Awesome Ken! Love R.Marx.
Richard Marx is in my opinion the best writer, performer, and has just the best way with melody.
Thanks for the visit. Merry Christmas! 🎅⛄🎄🤶🏻
One of my favorites of all time!
Rock on!
Best version, yaaaassss
Richard is a Legend in his own time! Richard is still relative to today, he is not a has been Ken
I wonder how todays " singers " would sound in the 80s without all the autotune. Cough cough pop stars
They would get laughed right off the stage lol
What’s an autotune (honest question)?
Another beatiful voice. Love this song. All this songs are so meny good memories with them. Thank you Ken.
Love Richard Marx! Great singer, songwriter. His melodies are killer!
I agree, Deborah!
I was thinking Chicago as well... Also, noticed someone make a connection similar to a Bryan Adams feel. Both should be giant compliments, but this guy... standing tall on his own merit. Nice review, Ken.
Highland Park, IL on the north shore.
Smooth and another trendsetter for solo artist to come. Shame we live in a society now where so many simply unable to appreciate music of heart felt magic
Another Chicagoan Singer... Richard Marx nailing it... and Dan Huff is the best... one of my all time favorite bands.. great hearing you talk about them!
I'm glad you liked it, Dave!
Richard is one of the greatest singers of his generation... and he can still pull it off in his 60's.
Thanks Ken. Marx is a great singer.
Dogmeat 👍
Richard Marx cantor maravilhoso, sensacional, inesquecível, fenomenal, incrível, completo, amo de paixão 💎❤🎼🎶🎵🇧🇷
I just slayed this song to perfection scared myself 😉
I have always loved Richard's song, "Hazard." A haunting "story" song. So good.
I really like that one too.
LOVELOVELOVE RICHARD MARX
Love Richard Marx ....
He has a great voice and this song has a very beautiful melody.
Really nice to see the amazing works of Richard Marx still being acknowledged. This live concert was obviously recorded decades ago when he was still topping the charts performing his original songs. While his biggest hits have been sung by other artists in the last couple decades, most of his best original albums have been released since the 2000s.
While he does now transpose many original keys down in concerts, he is one of the few singers I can think of who sounds better live than in the studio. He has worked with countless other greats and always sounds the way so many wish they could. His vocal abilities, songwriting, instrumental skills, and polished producing are a combination that make him one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time. I hope he will keep at it as long as possible and that more audiences continue to be introduced to his undeniably spectacular artistry.
You are one of the best vocal coaches out there. Great video and thank you for bringing back to the spotlight these excellent singers and records. Awesome stuff!
"Hazard" is also an amazing vocal work. I never knew he wrote his own stuff. Good for him. The writing is where the real $$$ is made.
Richard is a really talented artist!
Awesome as always Ken, thanks for always being a source of sunlight in my life!
Did you just call us kids in da begining 😆A mullet would suit you Ken, come on you can do it , will grow out .Richard has a cool grit in his voice - a legend he is. Good reaction Uncle Ken
You pick so many of the greats Ken, it's a shame that there's so few in modern music who can match up. Cheers
I agree. So few today can really sing. Kelly Clarkson is my favorite singer in all genres.
Richard marx is the best singer and songwriter in the eighties and 90s I heard this song on the radio before and his mullet of hair in the eighties
Rock on!
Ken I just LOVE, Your Voice! Thanks Bro!
Remember this from one of the first 7" vinyl single's I bought back in the day. Was the b side of Right Here Waiting release here in the UK
Great song
👍🏻❤️
I saw RM at QE Theatre in Vancouver back in the late 80s to early 90s and he was flawless. Super talented.
one of the best ever
I love Richard Marx, been listening to him as a kid. :P My favourite song is Right Here Waiting. Great singer.
Thankyou so much ken..your videos have really changed how i sing and with alot more confidence...i can contribute alot more to the band..
great coach reacts, Ken!! Awesome song and songwriter singer, a really really big musician, R Marx..
Обожаю Ричарда Маркса! От его голоса хочется рыдать и смеяться ... 🤪😍 Thanks a lot, Ken, for the Richard 👍😘
Ken Tamplin is awesome. Explains basically every note of the song... whilst also singing it. In perfect renditon. Fantastic work and more than anything, THANK YOU!
You are spot on with your Chicago/Cetera comment. I laughed because I was immediately thinking of Glory of Love and some 80s Chicago songs during the bridge. Thanks for all your videos!
He is very talented insane songwriter performer and singer. Love his voice
Rob Winfield 👍👍👍
I love watching a true expert breakdown and point out all the nuance of singing I would simply overlook. Great video!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I never realized Richard Marx was so great until now! Awesome Vocals! Billy Ocean Caribbean Queen please ;)
Thanks for the suggestion, Beer Hound's Beer Reviews!
We are sharing the same dream
Wouldn't let you love me is another great tune by Richard Marx
I'm so glad that you reacted to Richard Marx. He still sounds amazing. He's an incredible song writer. My favorite song by him is Hazard but I love this one too.

LINDA CANCION DE MI IDOLO LO AMO .MI NIÑITO HERMOSO.DESDE CHILE.TU FANS.CON ESA HERMOSA CANCION.BRAVO.
Lali Morales ❤️
Had a huge crush on Richard Marx in the day lol tied with Jon Bon Jovi and Billy Idol..only saw Billy Idol in concert tho. My favorite of his was Hazard. Love his voice..gets you in the feels for sure.
I like Hazard, too. 👍
Richard Marx is awesome! No doubt a crooner of the 80s-today.
When Kenny Marks came along, when wearing his band tshirts especially with autographs , I often got asked, is he related to Richard Marx? ;) (I honestly knew Kenny's music before Richard's lol) It was fun talking about how nice Kenny Marks was (RIP Kenny Marks).
As for Richard's hair, I remember Mtv clips way back showing him teasing his hair and flipping it back! lol ...80s, had to be there!
Great singer and songwriter.
Indeed!
Big fan of Richard Marx. Not sure when I first heard him, but the second I heard him I liked him. Great Songwriter / Singer / Performer. The Mullet was never declared an endangered species, both Richard Marx and Billy Ray Cyrus traded theirs in for new hairdos. Richard Marx's music is still relevant today. Great Lyrics and Great Compositions never go out of style. 20 years from now, people will still be listening to Richard Marx.
Ken thanks for sharing this. You described Richard's singing style with his throat pinched down, it explains his unique 'sound'. I have always admired his voice. I don't sing that way, but I can appreciate Richard's style that much more now. He also has great vocal range, breathing, and dynamic physical delivery style that engages the audience. You can have best voice in the world, but if you can't deliver it effectively, you will loose your audience.
Oh nice, I love this song!
This song dropped back in 1988-89 when I was a senior in high school. Repeat Offender is the album, I think. I've been a fan of Richard's since 1987 when his debut dropped with Don't Mean Nothing, etc, etc. I'm 51 now and was hoping that Kayla Reeves would come back into the studio to do those two songs (Don't Mean Nothing & Hold On To The Nights). BTW Ken, that woman in the front row of that show singing along with Richard and the band in this video still gets me all choked up, then and now.
Excelent reacción beutifour song very very good 👏👏👏👍
Thanks for listening! 😊
Ken, you're the world champion of epic shirts. 👌🏽👌🏽
Ken, long time no see (My Fault). You are AWESOME!. You are a master coach and performer. You practice what you "preach". You are awesome. (OK, how many times did I say awesome. I meant every one!)
Great to learn with ya this Saturday. I hope your having a great weekend and listening to great music. I've always got music with me so it's great to share the fun with others such as yourself.
I love Richard Marx! Thanks for doing this review.
I'm sure you know this already, but I was shocked when I found out that he wrote "This I Promise You" by NSYNC. There is a video of him singing it on UA-cam. That's how I figured it out lol
Kevin Reis yes and he has JC Chasez from *NSYNC sing with him. JC was SO underrated, I prefer his voice over Justin Timberlake
Yes, he sings it with N’Sync live and he rocks it :)
Thanks Ken!
You're welcome!
These are some of the most poignant lyrics I’ve ever heard. I recorded this song for my now wife when we were dating when we were in the exact same situation. Very powerful.
those high notes! pitch perfect. great singer from the years where singing abilities where a must for.. singers 😅
Richard Marx is my guy! Ken please try and evaluate his newer stuff where his voice has matured more with time he’s awesome
Richard was my absolute favorite singer/musician for about 25 years of my life, from when I was around 12 until just a few years ago (and even today he's still near the top of my list). Honestly, singing along with his songs is how I learned to sing, and he's also one of the biggest reasons I started writing my own songs, too. Thanks for such an awesome reaction!
For anyone who's interested, Richard actually just released a new single called "Another One Down": ua-cam.com/video/n5tzHOYdhoo/v-deo.html (The video even includes all three of his sons in various roles :- ) )
Great song, and this live version is much better than the album version. Richard kills it here.
Nice Ken I surely remember him. Hahaha and Daisy. Awesome artist. Good analysis ken 😃👍
This song is killing me, i'll cry a whole month after this. Thank you so much for this video!
Silverdesert ❤️

Thanks, Nguyen!
Richard Marx if fantastic. I love your videos. You are a great singer and know your stuff. Thanks for your channel. God bless you.
Great song, great artist! Thanks again! This one also takes me back. Would love to hear more pieces like this from artists today. What a song.
Good live performance..
Marx great voice and awesome songwriter
One of the best end chorus build ups of all time. Give me that shirt!
Right here waiting ❤️❤️❤️
Heidi Stutsman 👍
You are such a pleasure to watch so upbeat and energetic ! Great hair to ! Enjoy all that you share and teach us all ! I look at music in a whole new light !
Haha I've been singing these 80s ballads recently. Very fun to see if you can hit all the highs ...Chicago. Marx. Survivor. Etc
I love seeing you do these singers that I was enamored with in the 80's and 90's. It really takes me back to happier days. Thank you.
yeah, I was an 80's Marx fan, too.. Good songs. Going to listen to his songs now.. :) Hazard is my favorite
